Ibook crashes when idle

Hi,
I bought an ibook about a month ago and I have never had any problems with it. But a couple of days ago it started crashing, when I stopped using it. Even if I just boot mac os x (i.e. without starting any application) and then leave it idle for a couple of minutes.
I still can move around with the mouse pointer, but can't click on anything. Any keyboard short cuts don't work either except for the restart shortcut. However it never crashes during the startup or when busy.
In addition I sometimes get an Airport related kernel panic error, which forces me to reboot it.
My ibook doesn't have any additional RAM or anything else added after I bought it. It has the standard specs (40GB, 512RAM)
Would be nice if anybody can help.
Thanks,
Naomi

Hi Adrian,
I repaired the permissions using the Disk Utility - everything looked fine and nothing had to be fixed.
Next thing I do will be the Combo Update.
Well, no, can't think of anything I changed... if I look back now, I think at first the ibook crashed maybe once a day. Furthermore I didn't use it daily because I was sick. But now it's heavily used so it crashes much more often, but unfortunately I can't reproduce it - as I said, it doesn't always happen if it's idle. E.g. while I charged it I used it, then it was idle and it crashed. After reboot it was idle again, but it didn't crash... - everything was fine until it was fully charged so that I removed the power cable, but then it crashed again immediately.
Back to things which could have changed: the ibook isn't connected to any printer, no new applications were installed.
I checked "System Preferences>Accounts>Log in Items" which is empty.
I checked the panic.log - as I mentioned earlier, sometimes it crashes differently by showing a reboot message. The panic log contains something like this:

So it contains Airport... - however I rarely have this problem. The idle freeze happens much more often.
@Jonesy: Thanks for your advice. Even if the Airport card is accessible I wouldn't be keen on disassembling my ibook. I guess I could try to deactivate it for a while though... - I will test it next Monday, when I can use a LAN.
(Yes, my ibook is pretty new. I bought it in May, just before the macbooks came out. I wanted a notebook as small as possible and I'm quite happy with it except for this crash-issue)
Well, I will post again next week when I work without the WLAN, i.e. Airport disabled. I'm pretty curious if my ibook crashes again...
Thanks again for your help. Will keep you up to date!
Cheers,
Naomi

  • My iBook crashes when previewed or after exporting it and sync

    Hello,
I designed a photography iBook, and added 2 gallery widgets of 20 pics each. My iBook crashes when previewed on my iPad 3 or after exporting it and syncing it to the iPad. It happens after viewing the book and interacting with it.
I have seen that the gallery widgets behave a bit sloppily when you swipe to the next pic, also the second row of thumbails (pics 11 to 20) don't show properly, some thumbails just don't appear.
What can I do? delete the widgets and start again? Is the iBook crashing because of them?  Any user having this problem in the past months?
    Thank you!

I did it, removed both, started from 0 again. Same problem, thumbails dont show for items 11 to 20. The widget in general works a bit sloppily always, no matter amount of items.
i tried to make images smaller in resolution, same problem.
only solution: never have more than 10 items per gallery, and split 20 photos in 2 different galleries in 2 pages.

  • IBook crashing when moved, scr saver etc

For some reason, our iBook G4/1.33ghz/512Mb/OS X 10.4.4 suddenly started to crash/kernel panic crash, 5-6 times per day, often at following occasions:
    1) when battery saver screen saver (screen dimmed by power mgmt, not screen savers like Flurry) leads to a state where iBook cannot be waked, it's not only the screen that's dimmed - ie it's dead. No resets except hard reset will have any effect.
    2) restarting (only 5 sec powerbutton reset will work) after such crash usually leads to a kernel panic. After restarting after the panic crash, it will often crash again.
    3) kernel panic also happens in most cases when computer is moved, even if it's gently. Presumably after sudden motion sensor kicks in.
    Furthermore:
    - Apple Hardware test shows no errors (both several short and long tests).
    - RAMs are Apple native and does not seem to be defective.
    - PRAM and NVRAM have been resetted several times over.
    - preference files relating to power management have been put in trash.

    Hi Leemakiyama,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Have you tried performing an Archive and Install? You can find more information about the Archive and Install feature in Knowledge Base Document 107120.
You might have corrupted software or hardware that is failing (or failed). I suggest Logging your Kernel Panic so that if you need to show it to Apple, you can. If you don't know how to log a Kernel Panic, Knowledge Base Document 106228 can help out. I also suggest posting bits of the system log (found in console) or crash log (the specific application can also be found in console) and posting it here. That way we might be able to determine what might be going on. Do you have anything connected to your iBook when this happens? You said your iBook crashes when moved, how so? Does it crash if you move the display? You might want to bring your iBook to your local Apple Store/Reseller.
    I hope that helps,
    Jon

  • IBooks crashes when TOC items tapped

I have created several iBooks in iBooks Author and never had an issue with a TOC. The current title that I am working on works fine in iBooks for the Mac, but it crashes when some TOC items are tapped on the iPad. iBooks author, iBooks Mac, and iBooks for the iPad are all running at their current versions as well as the device operating systems. The TOC issues aren't predictable either . . . a TOC items may work at one point and crash at another point. Grrr.
    Any suggestions?

The issue appears to be an iBooks iPad issue (portrait view). I noticed that iBooks crashes when I tap on any TOC item that is listed 12 or more deep in a TOC subcategory. I completely stripped the document to just one chapter, used Lorem Ipsum dummy text, and removed all widgets and any hyperlinks and the issue remains. It has to be a bug in iBooks.
For this particular book I need a detailed TOC so this is a major issue. Very frustrating!

  • Anyone else have iBooks crash when changing to PDF library?

Since upgrading to iOS 7, iBooks consistently crashes when I try to view my PDF collection. Books all open fine. I have restarted my iPhone, reinstalled iBooks. Has anyone else had similar trouble and, more importantly, found a solution?

I called Apple Support and they helped me resolve the issue. What needed to be done was to reinstall iOS 7 and set it up as a new iPad, do not restore from previous back-up, and then re download the iBooks App from the App Store, then go to your iTunes on your Mac or PC and go to preferences / devices - and check the box that says prevent ipods, iphones, ipad from syncing automatically. Then plug in your iPad, and when your in iTunes go to your books and check the box that says to sync selected books, and check off your PDF's you want to sync with your iPad, and then sync. The iBooks App doesn't crash anymore!!!
According to the Tech there is a glitch with the iBooks App when upgrading to iOS7.
I hope this helps and I hope I made myself clear enough. I have never responded with answers before.

  • IBook crashing when moved

Our woes regards to our iBook G4/1.33ghz/512Mb/OS X 10.4.4 was first dealt with in following topic:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=356812
However, I have noticed that the iBook ALWAYS crashes when it's moved/lifted (which made me suspect there's a mechanical fault with the motion detector) but now we've figured out that it only happens if it's moved while holding/supporting the lower left corner (lefthand side of the trackpad).
Could anyone who ever opened a iBook tell me what's located under there?

    Hi Leemaklyama,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Right underneath the left hand corner of your iBook is the hard drive. What happens when it crashes? Does it just go black or does the whole computer turn off? Does it crash if you move the monitor?
I suggest suggest going to the Apple Menu () and selecting About This Mac. A window should appear, on the bottom of the window you should see a button that says More Info... (click it). This will open up System Profiler (also in Applications/Utilities/System Profiler). On the left hand side you should see three categories, one being Hardware. Under Hardware click ATA, that will have your optical and hard drive. Click on the second ATA Bus (Under ATA Device Tree), it should say something like Toshiba (a bunch of letters and numbers). Under it, information about the drive will show up, go down to S.M.A.R.T. status. What does it say next to it? Verified? Failing? This is important, it will tell you what shape your hard drive is in. You can also find your drives S.M.A.R.T via Disk Utilities (in the Utilities folder or on the Install Discs).
I suggest bringing your iBook to your local Apple Store/Reseller and have them check it out.
    I hope that helps,
    Jon

  • Ibook crashes when i open one book

I had an update on my Darth Plagues novel and now every time i open the book ibook crashes. This does not happen with the other books in my library. I tried to delete and re-upload the book to no avail.
    what do i do?
is the dark side sabotaging my attempts to read my Darth Plagueis book

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if Safari crashed, you would enter "Safari" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • Ibooks crashes when I do a search in the Logic pro 9

I downloaded logic user manual PDF and opened it in iBooks, but when I do a search it quits/ crashes. It's only when do a search in logic pro manual, all other pdf's is working fine, or iBooks works fine when I do a search on every other PDF, but not logic pro9. Anyone else experienced same problem? It's really annoying 'cause the PDF is over 1300 pages long.

I have the same problem. I have tried re-downloading the PDF manual from Apple and it still breaks. It is only (so far) the Logic Pro 9 manual which causes this problem.
I include here my crash log.
Would hope that this is resolved since easy access to the Logic manual is one of the reasons I bought my ipad.
    Thanks

  • Ibook crashed when  watching yahoo video

    Hi anyone out there,
I have an ibook G4 made in the end of 2005. Running Tiger 1.4.11. Recently I was watching a news clip on Yahoo and it crashed Safari and then froze the cursor. When I went to repower I got a spinning wheel and the computer wouldn't reboot. . I then opened the drive with Allsoft Disc warrior and rebuilt the drive. It has been working fine for 4 days now and suddenly it did the same thing again today. This time when it crashed Safari I was given a box with error message that said to restart the computer. I did so and then the wheel just spun and I figured I will have to Disc warrior again. All I did was put the disc in while it was on the grey page w/ apple logo and it booted up Does anyone have a clue as to what's happening??

Does this iBook have the original hard drive in it? If so, it is getting to be 4-5 years old. The average useful life of a hard drive is 3-5 years, so if it's the original, it's likely getting pretty long in the tooth.
First thing to do--back up your data and keep it backed up.
Next, go to Disk Utility and see what the S.M.A.R.T. status of your drive is. For a detailed look, download S.M.A.R.T. Utility. You can download the demo and run it several times for free.

My guess is that your hard drive is going south and will need to be replaced.
    Good luck!

  • Ibook crashes when going online w/ safari???

Hey gang, first time posting here. My 1 1/2-year old ibook is crashing each time i go online using safari. The screen goes slightly gray, and a message shows up in english, german, chinese, and japanese telling me to shutdown/restart my laptop.Have I been hit with a virus/worm? What should I do?

Same thing is happening to my iMac intel. It only happens with Safari and it actually got worse. After awhile we only got the black screen after we restarted after the kernal panic. After many tries we had to erase the hard drive (with Apple support's approval) and reinstall the OS. It didn't work at first but we finally got it to load. But . . . the same thing is still happening. Computer runs great until I run Safari. Has happened a few times when Safari is running and I'm downloading. Any ideas? This is a serious one.

It looks like the book is corrupt. You could try deleting it and downloading it again, but I doubt that there will be any change. You would have to contact either the uploader or Apple customer service.

  • Firefox crashes when idle (viewing) on mjpeg streams at seemingly random intervals.

When viewing a page with multiple embedded mjpeg streams, firefox randomly crashes. Sometimes it can sit for hours on the page, other times it will crash much sooner. It hasn't made it 24 hours ever.

I am having the exact same problem. Identical symptoms. I have tried everything suggested. Clean install, reset, running without plugins, checked virus killer, checked firewall, checked for malware and viruses, nothing. This problem only started after upgrading to Firefox version 22. I am running Windows 7 64 bit. Please look into this problem. After searching the internet quite extensively I can tell you that it doesn't appear to be a new problem. The pages will stop loading or rather they are loading but nothing actually appears, at random intervals. Sometimes it can go hours before a problem sometimes minutes or seconds. The only way to get webpages to load again is to kill firefox (including in the task manager) and restart. The program hangs in the task manager as if it has crashed.

  • Since recent updates (37.0.2 now) crashes when idle

Firefox has been solid for a long time. Recently, it has started crashing while I'm off doing something else and a browser window is open. I can't recall it crashing while I'm active within FF. I'll be checking email or even just leaving the system idle, and suddenly the crash box pops up. I can upload recent crash reports (that are sent to Mozilla) but I'm not sure how to do that.
    Thanks
    Tom

Download the current full installers for your Norton programs and save them.
'''[https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/kb20080710133834EN_EndUserProfile_en_us Download and run the Norton Removal Tool to uninstall your Norton product]'''
After rebooting the computer, run a registry scanner. Then run the installers.
Norton showed where to exclude things from Autoprotect
Open '''Norton Administrative Settings.''' Under '''Performance Monitoring, '''
find '''Program Exclusions. ''' To its far right, press the '''Configure +''' link.
You will have to add each program one at a time from the '''Mozilla Firefox'''
    and '''Mozilla Maintenance Service'''<Windows> folders..
