IBook deleted Mail settings, Safari settings and iPhotos

I woke up this morning, without a blue moon in my eyes, to find that my computer has reset itself to its factory state. This may have been self-perpetuated as I decided to clear my hard drive of music last night but, as far as I am aware, I deleted only music and .zip files I had downloaded from the internet.
As I am sure you are all aware, this is a collossal disappointment and a poor way to begin a Friday. My question is, not surprisingly, can anyone help me? I have recently transferred from Windows and would be delighted to learn of an OSX system restore. I haven't come across it in my time with Mac so some assistance would be greatly appreciated. I will be forever grateful to the person that provides help.

If you switch on your mac and all your preferences have been reset to default this would suggest that you may have renamed your home folder. Then when your mac starts up it cant find your home folder to recreates a new one with default settings.
How to restore your home folder.

I suddenly cannot delete mail from my inbox and get a message saying " (msg) could not be moved to the mailbox trash-POP account".  It does not matter if I am trying to delete a single message or mulitiple messages.  Can anyone help?

If you're running Leopard, as your profile says, then you need to post your question in that forum, not the Snow Leopard forums. So if you're really running Snow Leopard, you need to update your profile to show that, as well as give more details about what kind of mail accounts you have, and who your email provider is.

  • Is there a way to recover deleted mail from my iPad and recover deleted messages from my onw iPhone?

Is there a way to recover deleted mails sent from iPad and/or recover deleted messages from my iPhone?
A software or even open it? It is very important for me get back the messages sent on December. I did not have a back up at that time, at least that I know, but I change my iPhone and had as I got a micro chip, I could take my contacts from iTunes.
Does it means a back up was done at the Note book I used that time or the messages are lost?
And my mails? From my server, I can recover only from 5 last days!
    Thank you for any help!!

Thanks for replying - no, I had not done a backup since the shots were taken and then attemped to put them in an album as I did not want to change the enviornment of the phone from when I had inadvertently delted them.   Unfortunatlely, when asked "Do you want to delete these photos from all locations," I hit yes and they were also deleted from my Photostream.

  • About Safari cache and iPhoto library fragmentation...

Some days back, with the help of iDefrag I found out that my entire HD was badly fragmented inspite of having 95GBs free space. So I decided to do what an average mac user does to fix this... I backed up everything my my TM drive and restore the entire from there. Then I ran iDefrag and things were neat. A lot of my speed related issues are not solved.
However, I do notice that Safari cache and iPhoto library are always reported as fragmented portions on the HD by iDefrag. Infact, I often see the colored ball - wait indicator when switching tabs in safari or when I work with photos in iPhoto. I dont mind clearing the cache of safari. i'm somewhat worried about my iPhoto library. I have all my personal and family pics in one library as thats easier to maintain.
I just want to know what is the ideal thing for a mac user to do here...
PS: noticed that even linux virtual disk of vmware is completely fragmented, which i made after i restored with TM.

Watch your CPU usage via the +Activity Monitor+ app (in your Applications/Utilities folder).
When it starts, select either +All Processes+ or +Active Processes+ in the toolbar, and sort the list by the +% CPU+ column, so the highest numbers are on top, and select the CPU tab towards the bottom.
For this purpose, also select +View > Update Frequency > Less Often+ from the Menubar.
Various processes will "spike" up and down normally as they do things, then are idle, so you need to watch it for a while and get a feel for the processes that are using the most CPU, and the +% Idle+ at the bottom.
When the slowdown occurs, see if something changes significantly, especially if the +% idle+ goes to near zero. If that happens, see what process(es) are using the most CPU.
If the process(es) involved aren't familiar to you, post their names here (and or check this out: http://triviaware.com/macprocess/all)
You may also want to select the +System Memory+ tab towards the bottom. Keep an eye on the total of Free and Inactive memory (if they're near zero, you may need more), and the +Page outs+ (if that's high, it's another indication you may need more memory).
And see this Apple Support article: Mac OS X: Reading system memory usage in Activity Monitor

I had somebody  work on my OS 10.9.2 to speed it up. He failed and now  Preview, Textedit, App Store, Mail (crashes) and Contacts  do not work anymore. I can still use Safari, Firefox, Word, Photoshop and iPhoto etc. How do I get the Apple programs fixed again?

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).

  • TS3276 Is it possible to delete mail from your iPhone and it be deleted from all your Apple devices?

I would like to delete mail from all my Apple devices in one go rather than having to access each individually and then read/delete on each, is this possible? I have a Mac Book Pro an iPad mini and an iPhone 5.
Any help would be gratefully received.
    Regards,
    Andy

It depends on the email you use, if you have a provider that only allows POP then it is not possible. If your provider supports Imap or Exchange then it is.
    Who is your email provider?

  • Can't delete mail (re-appears immediately) and Calendar/Call screens slow!

This only started a few days ago, been running 4.2.1 since it came out with no problems.
Deleting email from a POP account appears to work, but the total message counter e.g. "Inbox (4)" at the top of the screen never gets to zero and the messages themselves re-appear in a few seconds.
Also entering Mail randomly switches to this POP account's Inbox - I can be reading another box's Inbox (I don't use unified Inbox) and it will just switch to the other Inbox. Same happens occasionally when first entering Mail - while receiving mail for each account it will randomly switch into the Inbox of that same POP box.
Have rebooted, done a system restore and restore from backup, no change.
Also just prior to all this starting I had an unresponsive screen when in a call - couldn't click to hang up the call, no touch response. Same in Calendar - just a static screen which wouldn't scroll, took about 30-60 seconds to become responsive but was quite slow. Neither are still happening as bad as they were, but occasionally the screen is not responsive for 5-10 seconds. Then totally fine.
Not sure what to do at this stage other than put up with it until the next release?

you have tried all the basics to attempt to fix this issue your next step is to take it to a apple store and speak with a genius

  • I deleted Mail in a fury and now it is not reinstalling

Mail application would close down as soon as I opened it, so after trying a number of unsuccessful things I saved a copy to my desktop and eventually deleted the application hoping I could reinstall it. I have reinstalled all the software (7 disks) and OS X (3 disks) but it doesnt seem to have reinstalled Mail. When I try and open the Mail folder I coped it tells me there is no application to read it with and I am told the Application doesnt exist or has been disabled (this is when I try and open Mail from help).
    Any ideas?

I don’t fully understand what you say, but you can use Pacifist to extract Mail from the Mac OS X installation disks and install it in /Applications/.
If the version of the system software on your installation disks is earlier than what you're using now (and only in that case), then you must also reinstall the Combo Update for the type of computer and the version of Mac OS X you're using, to bring Mail back in sync with the rest of the system:

  • Deleting mail from one app and not the other

    Hi,
I'm using Outlook 2011 on my Mac Pro and Apple Mail on my laptop. Outlook has a feature where you can "Delete copies from the server (After Deleting From This Computer)".
I've looked everywhere but Mail doesn't have this feature. How can I tell Mail to do the same as Outlook?
    Thanks!

You are mixing two things -- server vs second computer. I have assumed this is a POP account because the option you mention is associated with POP accounts. Were it an IMAP account, then the Inbox resides on the server and if a message is deleted, no matter from what computer, it will be gone from the Inbox and server, and you would not have needed to ask the question.
So assuming it is a POP account, there is no email client -- Outlook included -- that will delete a message that has already been downloaded onto another computer from that second computer. What can be done, consistent with your original question, is that instructions can be given to remove the message from the POP3 server upon certain actions on any computer that has downloaded the message.
Where you see the option to remove from the server after one week, there is also the option to remove from the server when moved from the Inbox. Deleting is but one action that will remove a message from the Inbox, but this option if selected will then remove the message from the server.
    Is this clear now?

  • Very slow applets on Safari 5 and 1.6.20 - works fine in Firefox

    Hello,
Has anyone else noticed very slow applets in safari 5? I'm running 1.6.0_20 and trying run any of the applets at http://openprocessing.org results in VERY slow applet performance.
If i load the same applets in Firefox things run smoothly.
For example, load this one in both and see the difference:
    http://openprocessing.org/visuals/?visualID=9151
The motion in Safari 5 is jerky and not fluid at all. But in firefox it runs nice and smooth. Even in Chrome it's jerky just like Safari.
I've tried both the 32/64 bit version settings and still the same result in Safari.
    Thanks..

    HI,
Open Java Preferences (Applications/Utilities) Select the Network tab
    Click: Delete files
    Relaunch Safari.
And empty the Safari cache from the Safari menu.
Could be the site itself. An HTML validator came up with errors.

  • Deleted Mail Reappears

Using Mail 4.5 on my iMac.
I have thousands on emails showing on  ON MY MAC.  When I delete them, they are back moments later.  These are messages that I deleted from the MAILBOXES.  Some of the accounts are POP and some are IMAP.
I also use Mail on my MacBook and I do not have this issue.  There it is Not continually reloading all my deleted mail.
I have my Preferences for the POP account set to "Remove copy from Server after retrieving a message."
On the IMAP & POP account I have checked  "Move deleted messages to Trash Mailbox" and I have Unchecked "Store deleted messages on the Server" on the IMAP account.
How do I stop all this mail from returning?
Also, when using one of my POP accounts to Send mail, it often gets sent from a different POP account - even if it is a Reply email, it doesn't get sent from the email address it was sent to.  THat creates confusion for the person I am trying to communicate with.  The two email accounts do use the same server.
Am I better off making all my accounts either POP or IMAP. THe 3 servers I use can work either way.
    Thanks

so what you are saying is that if you delete mail from iphone trash, and it is still on server, it will be redownloaded?
This is not what is supposed to happen with a POP account. When downloading new messages with an email client for a POP account, there is an option to remove messages from the server when downloaded With the iPhone's Mail client, the options are Never, after Seven Days - after a message has been downloaded, and when removed from Inbox.
With an email client used on your computer for accessing a POP account, there is an option to remove messages from the server when downloaded which is not available with the iPhone's Mail client.
Although a new message downloaded with the iPhone's Mail client cannot be removed from the server when downloaded especially when Never is selected for remove messages from the server when downloaded for the account's settings with the iPhone's Mail client, even though a downloaded message is marked for deletion which moves the message from the account's Inbox mailbox to the account's Trash mailbox, the message should not be downloaded again by the iPhone's Mail client when the account is checked for new messages again. If this is occurring, something is wrong, which deleting and recreating the account with the iPhone's Mail client should resolve.

  • I can no longer mass delete mail because the pop-up "delete" at the bottom of the screen has disappeared. How do I get that functionality back?

I somehow lost the ability to mass delete mail using the "edit" and check off function. The "delete" option no longer pops up at the bottom of the screen. Has Apple done away with this option in the latest software update or what?

look here how to back up:

  • Disable "delete mail" double clicking

I want to disable the "delete mail" function....not the "real" one, but the double clicking I have to do to delete an email. I click once to delete, then "delete mail" notice comes on and I have to click again to actually delete the message. This is not a "feature"
