IBook Display Reversed

On my iBook Dual USB I recently (and successfully) changed the display inverter but since doing that my screen has, for lack of a better term, inverted. When the lid is open the screen is off but when the lid is closed the screen is on. I can't for the life of me figure out what changed on the computer other than piece I replaced. Just for kicks I obtained a second inverter board and it too exhibits the same problem, off when open and on when closed. Since both connections on the inverter board are keyed to only fit one way I'm certain it's installed correctly. A friend thinks this is a software fix but I'm not so sure. I do consider myself pretty tech savvy, having upgraded the memory, changed the hard drive, and twice changing the inverter board. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

The reed switch is the part of the iBook that tells it whether it's asleep or awake. It's located in the right edge of the display bezel (about halfway down) and is triggered by a magnet at the right side of the keyboard (underneath). It's possible that you dislodged the magnet in your journey in replacing the inverter board, but it's puzzling that it would reverse the function. I could understand it simply not working, but this is a new one on me, which is why I thought maybe the PMU reset would do it.
Read about the function of the reed switch and how to disable it _Small Dog Electronics_. If you prefer to replace it, it's going to take more work than you've done before, since it involves disassembly of the display. If you disable it, you'll have to remember to put it to sleep manually before closing it. Apple says not to let it run while closed.

You may want to try to locate the magnet and make sure it's in the correct position before ordering the part and attempting this complicated repair. I don't see how a misplaced magnet could cause this reverse behavior, though.

Actually, I'd like to use fixed layout so I use com.apple.ibooks.display-options.xml.
This ePub file looks good because I can open it with my iPad - iBooks, however iTunes publisher always rejects this.
Any solutions ?

I was getting that error when I used OSX's default compress feature. I found a little utility called ePub Zip and used it to compress (zip) my ePubs and that did the trick. They then passed the validation. I got it here:

Can ibook display a single page on the screen?

To my understanding, ibook displays two pages at a time on the display on an iPad. Does it have the ability to display just a single page on the screen with nothing fancy (just a flat sheet) ? I was thinking of ePub powerpoint slides and I should like to display them just as a single slide or page.

Yes, you can view a single page in iBooks on your iPad screen. Put the iPad in Portrait, not landscape and voila, you'll have a single page view.

An iBook has reversed the way it loads and scrolls i.e. instead of turning the page right to left to go to the next page I need to swipe left to right. But my other book are fine. Can anyone help?

I have, but if I don't have that particular external hard drive connected when my time machine backup hard drive is connected, then I don't think it is all backed up together. It is getting too complicated to get out all this equipment every time I want to buy some music.

Flickering iBook display

I've seen a number of posts regarding iBook displays but I haven't seen one that addresses my specific symptom.
My iBook display flickers almost constantly. It has done it a little bit for years now but it is getting a lot worse in the last month or so. It has never gone black (yet) but it is pretty annoying. It happens whether the display is fully illuminated or dimmed a bit and no matter what angle the screen is at.
The solutions I've read about are the inverter cable and the logic board. The fact that moving the screen has no effect would seem to rule out the inverter cable. My iBook falls under the logic board replacement program but a flickering display is not listed as one of the logic board symptoms on the faq page. Has anyone had a similar problem? Should I just take it to the genius bar and let them take a look at it?

My iBook display flickered a bit before the logic board died - not nearly as bad as yours though, from the sound of it. And it wasn't for a long period - a matter of days rather than years. Definitely take it to the Genius Bar, they're extremely helpful.

Why does my G4 ibook display only work when it's partially open?

The display on my iBook G4 shows no video until I nearly close the lid. I can then see the display working but it is at an extreme angle. I'm thinking that it must be a contact problem, but cannot find any forum or troubleshooting support that address this issue. Does anyone know of a procedure to check and repair this?

I have repaired those inverter cables. The break is usually at the hinge point and often it's the red wire that breaks. If you open up the iBook (bottom case, top case (Be very careful with the power lead, it's easy to rip the socket off the logic board. I don't even attempt to unplug it, just free up the speaker cables and the power lead (blue and white) by pulling it free from the adhesive) and the top shield. (lots of patience required here to keep from bending the shield esp. near the top left). Often I'll just leave it connected and tape it to the display. You have to tease the inverter cable out and might have to remove the display to get full access. Note carefully how the cable is routed around the hinge. I tease the silver tape apart (often you can see the break - big black burned spot) so then I solder it back together, lots of tiny shrink tubing.
When I remove the top or bottom shield I'll tape the individual screws right to the shield near where they belong. 3M blue for this. That way reassembly is a no brainer. I used to measure the screw length w/ a metric rule and that took forever.
I also use a "black stick" that I made from a #3 black nylon propeller from the hobby shop. I cut it in half and tape the cut ends w/ self fusing electrical tape. The black stick is essential to releasing the tabs that hold the case together. Don't forget to release the one inside the battery compartment as I often find that one broken off in iBooks that come in for donation.

IBooks display differences between iOS7 and iOS8

I work for a music publisher where we build reflowable ePubs that mostly contain music and embedded audio/video files. It is critical that we deliver an eBook that keeps a/v controllers with the title, credits, music etc. and maintains proper spacing throughout. It's critical not only for the overall look but for the readability and usability of the musician. Clearly a user can increase the font size and destroy any well designed layout for ePub, but if the ePub is designed properly, targeting median font settings, our layouts are consistent from tablet to tablet.
The recent release of iOS 8 has brought changes to iBooks once again and how it displays content. I've noticed differences with A/V controllers displaying more margin, troubles controlling the alignment and overall width of player. I've also noticed additional margin at the top of each "page" in iBooks which wasn't there in iOS 7.
These changes may seem minor but they completely break our layouts. I have been trying to correct these issues using CSS, but haven't had any luck. What's even more frustrating is that iBooks for Mac on Mavericks doesn't have these issues. In fact, the audio controller has a completely different look and responds to CSS as it should. These small issues are causing major problems for us because we have thousands of ePubs with audio at Apple.
We've seen changes in the past with our ePubs when iOS 6 went to 7, so we were expecting things like this to happen. But because our CSS modifications don't seem to work on the iOS side, I'm beginning to think that this is a bug or that there are new issues to contend with when developing ePubs for iBooks. If there have been changes, it would be great to have specs from Apple that would help identify what is happening within iBooks. It would also be great to have development tools for iBooks like there are for all modern browsers today.
If anyone knows anything about these issues or has information as to where I can find the answers, I would be most grateful.

This has been my headache since day one and a complete swing and a miss by Apple. I haven't been able to get ANYTHING I have not explicitely purchased from iTunes to sync in iBooks across device.
For example: If I load an ePub or PDF into iTunes and "manually" add to a device, this works just fine.
However, if I open a PDF file on my iPhone into iBooks, it doesn't show up in any of my other devices, including the new iBooks on my iMac with Maverick. it doesn't matter which device it's added, nothing syncs if it's not purchased from iTunes.
Please, someone make me a liar and tell me I've completely missed something.
Apple: Why or why can't I add PDF files to iBooks on my iMac and have them automagically show up in the collection I created on all my devices? Because I didn't purchase them from you, you say? Stupid, stupid, stupid.
Then don't let me add it in the first place and stop advertising "my content anywhere on any device" because this has been broken from day one.

Strange ibook display problem

My wife has a 12" ibook g4 1.33 mhz. It has been exhibiting the following symptoms with increasing frequency:
1) the display will completely dim to the lowest setting or cycle between bright and dim, as if pressing f1 and/or f2 repeatedly
2) some of whatever she was typing or working on at the time will be deleted
3) a string of repeated characters (usually q1aq1aq1a) will appear in her typing
4) often the desktop is brought to the front as if pressing f11 in expose
5) other than the problems described, the computer continues to work normally
6) problems are almost always related to moving the hinge position, but sometimes happen randomly, with no movement at all
7) it will sometimes occur many times a day, then not at all for several days
8) it seems to happen more often when the computer is not on a hard surface, but this may just be my imagination or some random bad luck
I am at a loss as to what the problem may be. I was thinking it might be the display cable because of the link to hinge position, but that wouldn't account for the random typing. Then I thought it was the motherboard, but the computer seems to work ok other than this. I did realize the other day that most of the problems are things on the left hand edge of the keyboard (display brightness, the q1a pattern), but this doesn't account for the deleted typing and the mysterious f11 thing.
Does anybody have any thoughts? Am I looking at a display cable (hopefully this is it - I have no problems with disassembling/reassembling things)? Or is it the motherboard (probably means it would be more economical to get a new machine)? Or is it something else?

There was definitely never any liquid spilled. I'm not totally convinced that the keyboard is at fault, mostly due to the problem being linked to the position or movement of the hinges. Could the keyboard be flexing when the lid is moved? But, I figured it couldn't hurt to try your idea out.
I didn't have an external keyboard handy, so I exchanged it with the one from my other ibook. I would have expected the problems to have followed the keyboard if that was the issue, but both computers are functioning normally so far. I have no way to tell if this means something, or if I'm just in one of those lucky streaks where it works for a while before the malfunctions pop up again.
Any other ideas?

Why does my ibook display only free book?

I noticed my ibook app only display free books. Could this be because my apple ID was registered under Malaysia?

Apple can only sell content in iBooks that the publishers have allowed them to - if they havn't been granted permission then they can only 'sell' free content. So if you are in one of those countries where there is only free content then you will need to buy and use a different ebook content provider (the terms of use of the stores say you can only purchase/download from your own country's stores). Do you have Kindle (Amazon), Nook, or other ebook retailers in your country ?

Wondering what is going on with my ibook. The display is going light, darker, light, darker, over and over. Computer has also been totally
shutting down on its own from time to time, but starts up ok without any prob. Help? Luckily I just backed it up.

Have you tried resetting the PMU?
The PMU (Power Management Unit) has control over the backlight function, so resetting it may help.

Ibook display went black

I have an ibook g3 800.
I am experiencing the display to be back when I turn on the ibook.
I had the logicboard replaced under the logicbord recall.
I am not sure what might have caused the display to go black. It was working a few a months ago and then it went black. I know the HD spins up, because I can hear. I tested the computer in target mode and know the HD mounts
I am able to get the computer to show me any display when connected into the apple VGA (RGB) Cable.
Is a key combination that I need to use to get the ibook to work off an external display?

Wrong ibook display size

I just purchased a second hand ibook. It came
with Tiger installed and no original system disks.
(The CPU is a 700 MHz PowerPCG3 and there is 640MB
of ram) Although I didn't do much with the machine
under Tiger, everything seemed to be working fine.
In particular, the whole ibook screen was used.
I got the original system disks from Apple and
proceeded with Software Restore. That erased Tiger
and replaced it with earlier system software.
I can boot into system 9 and system 10, BUT
the display (under both systems) is about the size
of the 1984 mac display (surrounded by a large black
border). Otherwise everything is working.
In system 9, the system profiler shows the
display card leading to display(2) which
has a screen size of 640 by 480. The monitor
panel in the control strip shows the
same thing along with "color LCD (1) 1024 by 768".
I don't know why two displays are shown.
In system 10, I can't find anything about the
display size, but it may be at the bottom
of a window I can't see (because of small screen).
Any help would be much appreciated.

Yes and yes. But I can't remember the last time I booted into OS 9, or started Classic.

Changing iBook display for external monitor

does anyone know how to change the screen resolution past 1024x768 on an iBook G4 12 inch? I'd like to set it at 1280x1064 on my 19 inch monitor, but its not an option in the displays preference page. Does anyone know a way around this?

There are a few ways the display resolutions and/or settings can be
changed; you can use custom controls offered by some applications
and there also are unsupported "hacks" that can add features or
resolutions not originally intended by Apple for certain models.
So, since some choices (if failure results) may void your warranty,
some people are reluctant to use an unsupported feature hack.
That said, one of the better sites with a product that seems to be
well crafted (which I have not tried) is SwitchRes X
Another less polished and maybe more on the edge (?) is one that
adds the ability to expand the desktop between two displays and
not just mirror; such as the PowerBook supports. That may work,
or it may not. Some hacks may be bad on the video card.
Extended Desktop
With the second display attached to the iBook, you may be able
to use one of these utilities listed to add features and resolutions.

Hi,
F.05 can be used to post the Foreign Currency Valuation loss or gain at the end of the month or year. In the same T Code you can post the reversal document in the next period as it was only a provision entry.
In this case, if you have the original document reference, then you can go FB03 display, you can find the reversal doc. reference in header area.
If you do not have the document reference, then also use same T Code FB03 and go to document list, use document type and posting date to find the origial document / reversal document. You can also change the layout of the report to bring the user ID to shortern your search.

HELP - Missing Info For Dual USB iBook Display Repair

I've read and re-read most all of the discussions regarding the blank and/or dimmed display and pretty much determined that my problem is also due to a pinched wire in the hinge. The display is normal until I open it further than about 45 degrees, then goes blank. Sounds like the typical problem presented in this discussion.
I've got two questions that I can't seem to find answers to:
1) I bought the reed switch cable assembly from Small Dog as suggested in this forum (part no. 076-1073 (replaces part no. 922-5017) ). While trying to find some good instructions as to how to install this cable, I found that one supplier (powerbookmedic) says that there is a different part number for the 14.1" display (part no. 922-5451).
Can some one shed some light on this, since I haven't seen this discussed anywhere?
2) I've seen many references to the online take apart manuals such as that found at pbfixit or PowerBook Tech, but their guides don't go into the detail that I assume is necessary to actually replace just the cable. In other words, they take you to the point of removing the entire display only and leave you with the cables dangling.
If one wants to replace just the cable, where does one find instructions for that?
Right now, I've got my 18 month-old iBook feeding an old 17" monster Studio Display. Not exactly the notebook portability I thought I bought. I've spent a lot of time trying to find some answers to the questions above and I'm getting no where. Gawd help me, but having been through many, many Macs and one of the staunch Mac disciples since 1984, I'm actually finding myself hurtling toward the peecee world. Shame on Apple for making such a manufacturing boo boo in the first place, and then compounding their error by not fixing it!
Maybe I'll feel better if you can help me find the info I need to fix this thing.

This problem if far more widespread than I first thought. I can only think of all the folks who don't know about this Apple discussion group and have had this problem. Great PR Apple! In the past, I've sold many of my friends and cohorts on the virtues of Mac for many years, but am hesitant to do so from now on.
After finding that the 12" reed switch cable won't fit my 14" book, I decided what the heck, why not call Apple's SOS number before I get another cable and rip into this beast. The CS guy was trying to be helpful and suggested that I exercise my Disk Utility (I do that regularly), reset the PMU (I already did), and perform a Safe Boot (already did that too). I told him I was convinced that the wires passing through the right hinge were creamed and that I had demonstrated that by taking a small scribe and by moving the wires slightly, I could get the display to brighten momentarily at least until it was moved. My prime purpose for calling SOS was to find out if Apple had become so aware of this defect that they might be in the mood to correct the problem gratis. Also, since I live in the boonies, I'm at least 120 miles from the nearest approved Apple repair folks. (When I called them, they didn't know what a reed switch cable was and said they hadn't heard of any display problems. That left me with a totally cold feeling of distrust when it comes to letting them open my book up for surgery.) So, SOS said to try the aforementioned "tests" and assigned a case number. The guy apologized, but said from this point on any further discussion will cost me $49. That's pure bull!
I know I should just give in and get the stupid cable and perform the needed surgery. But, right now I'm pretty po'ed about this and think Apple should take some responsibility for creating this "feature". I'm feeling that I should just amputate the display at the hinges, hook it up to a big screen external LCD monitor, and buy a peecee book (that's hard to think about). At least then I could enjoy all those things and sites that won't play with Macs. YIKES!
