IBook fan not turning on anymore

Hi!
I'm using my iBook G4 (1.33 GHz) for about 9 months now and most of that time i played some game every now and then (hardware intense games like Halo or World of Warcraft). Normally, the fan started working for a few minutes and everything was fine. But in the last days (it's really hot here in Vienna...), the fan never turned on. Even when I'm playing WoW and the temperature reaches 72 degrees C, the fan doesn't turn on (normally it starts at about 65 C). I'm really wondering if this has got something to do with the 10.4.7 update because I didn't play for a few weeks and now this problem arised.
Are there any known problems with this update? Or is there some software that allows me to turn on the fan manually?
Thanks in advance,
Marco
iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I have had my iBook g4 1.42ghz for almost a year now. I have not once heard the CPU fan turn on, not even when playing Doom 3.
Then again, my CPU rarely passes the 55 degree mark.
It should be the case that if the CPU gets too hot, the iBook will shut itself down.
Does anyone know the max temp for the CPU before failure?
My main concern is not for every single instance you would expect the fan to come on, so much as accumulated damage to the mainboard from maintaining such high temps. Maybe you should run a hardware test? Heck, with everything you have already tried, you may as well boot to the install disk and run disk repair and repair permissions. I can't imagine what could be wrong with the filesystem\permission that would cause this, but sometimes a little nonsensical voodoo magic cures problems that should not be related to these things.
Good luck, and keep an external fan blowing on your machine until this is resolved.

from the information you provided i can't tell if it is a hardware problem or a software problem. I do have an idea though, try to press your home button and lock button at the same time.

  • Backlight does not turn on anymore Satellite M70-147

    Hello outhere,
The backlight of my M-series M70-147 does not turn on anymore.
I first noticed this when awakening the laptop from standby or hibernation mode.
At first I thought the screen was not working anymore, but when I looked closely I could still make out the icons on the desktop vaguely. So at first I rebooted the laptop and then most of the times the backlight would turn on and stay on.
But now it does not do that anymore, not even when I close the screen (to force standby mode) and then open it again, the backlight won't turn on.
I also looked at other forums and topics what the cause might be, a broken backlight or a faulty power inverter.
So can anybody with the symptons described tell me what the cause might be?
I'm pretty sure nothing is wrong with the graphics card because when I hooked on my laptop to my dads LCD monitor it just displayed the desktop of my laptop on the LCD monitor. Also the first time I did this after pressing Fn-F5 a few times the screen of my laptop would come on some times. But now it does not do that anymore.
So can anybody with the symptons described tell me what the cause might be?
    Many thanks.

    > So can anybody with the symptons described tell me what the cause might be?
For me it looks like a faulty FL inverter.
The FL inverter is a small part behind the display frame and it controls the backlight.
Usually the external display should work properly because the FL inverter affects the internal display only...
However, the issue can be solved only by replacement of this part.
I recommend contacting the Toshiba ASP in your country to get this part replaced

My new AirPort Extreme will not turn on anymore, no lights when plugged in.  I just bought it a few days ago. It has been working fine. I left the house for most the day and when returning home it would turn back on. I have tried to plug it into other outlets...nothing, I've tried the reset button...Nothing.

That is reported here a few times.. just take it straight back to apple or place of purchase for immediate exchange.

Have you tried a reset ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds, after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot. Happened to me once, about 6 months ago, and a reset got it working again.

  • Macbook air's fan not turning off and it will not sleep when the lid is closed?

I downloaded OS X Mavericks yesterday. The fan will not turn off. It runs whenever i turn on the computer. The computer does  not turn off when i close the lid, and the fan still runs. There is also no battery icon anymore on my home screen. Is this just a bug with Mavericks? My computer is a mid 2012 edition.

  • Ibook will not turn on, please help. ASAP

I have an i book laptop but i am not sure what model it is. I just know that it is about 4 to 5 years old. I used to have some one that could fix it for me and tell me what is wrong. But i do not have them any more. My computer will not turn on. Even when i plug the power block into it. I have looked at the mac support things. but none of them have helped me. if some one out there could help me i would be sooooooo great full. Please some one try to help me solve this problem. i have tried the (PMU) restet, when you press shift, ctrl, option simultaneously. Then you are supposed to wait 5 seconds then turn it on. that did not work. For many months now i have been struggling with this problem. i really need some help, because the mac support on this website has not been helping me. So maybe by creating this account, and writing this letter. Some one will come to help me.
By the way i cant even find out what OS it is because i cant turn it on to find its information

Thanks - but I can't see anything, the screen is dead (which is why I put the disk in - I was following the troubleshooting instructions), all I hear is the fan, but there's no screen prompt. I've tried resetting the PMU and the PRAM without success -- I've been having this problem on and off for a few weeks but it usually started ok the second or third time. Now, however, it's not working at all.
    Hi,
You may be able to eject the CD by starting in open
    firmware.
Hold down the command-option-o-f keys as you start.
When you see some text on the screen release them. At
the prompt type "eject cd" (without the quotes) and
press return. It should eject after a few seconds.
Next try resetting the NVRAM. At the prompt type:
    reset-nvram <return>
    set-defaults <return>
    reset-all <return>
It should restart after the third command is
    entered.

  • IBook will not turn on at all

Hello everyone, this is my first post.
My problem: I have a late-2005 iBook G4 1.33MHZ superdrive etc. I believe this is the last iBook Apple made before the MacBooks came out.
About a month ago, with no warning signs whatsoever (so slowing down, no fan wheezing, nothing) the computer just turned off and will not turn back on.
The battery was fully charged and the unit was on AC power when it happened. The green AC light still comes on and the green battery buttons will glow when I push the button on the bottom, but otherwise the machine will not even power up.
Unfortunately I'm no longer under warranty. I'm assuming it's the logic board.
The only other information I can give is that something bumped the left side of the computer about 2 hours before it shut itself off, but not any harder than other bumps my poor little computer has sustained.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks,
    Chris

Well two things come to mind, actually 3 but 2 are related.
First is the power chip U28 described here:
    http://www.coreyarnold.org/ibook/
Diagnosable via pressure or shim as described.
The 2nd would be the GPU chip. It's an ATI Mobility Radeon 9550 4x AGP for the 12" and a 9200 on the 14". I have a 12" 1.33 board that has a dead 9550 chip and there are known failures on the 9200.
So on that same chip there are also BGA failures (the way the chip is soldered to the board) this can also be diagnosed by shim repair or by putting pressure on the chip from the top or the bottom. That chip is generally in the area on the top of the logic board under the option key.
Both problems can be fixed permanently by soldering in the first and reballing in the second case.

  • Help!!! Macbook fan not turning on!

    Hello there!
I have a problem with my macbook fans. The fans do not turn on until the computer has been running at 80°C for 5 minutes and only then my macbook only runs at 3000 revolutions. The fans idle is 2000... I know this because I have an application from the mac app store called temp. guage and that tells me temperatures and fan speeds.
The fans to both of my brothers macbooks turn on once the computer is about 60-75°C and it turns onto 6000 revolutions and their idle is 2000 revolutions . Could it be that I have a macbook and not a macbook pro? Or could there be something wrong with my fans?
When I got the computer about 1 year ago the fans turned on a lot but I didn't have this app for various reasons but I could hear the fan turning on. I know that the fan back then was faster becaue i could heat it and when the fans now are at 3000 I can not hear it.
Could a connection be loose - I have never opened the back case but I carry the macbook a lot with my in school? Could there be so much dust on the fan that it tries to spin faster but it simply can't? Could it be the grease on the fan? can anyone help me narrow my decision? Do I need to replace my fan?
Today I was at the apple store and I did a diagnostic test. The only problem was with my speakers but I did not notice that. Point it the fans were all right in the diagnostic test but in reality the fans are not all right...
Someone please help! This is a desperate problem my computer keeps on shutting off because it gets too hot.

    Thanks in advance!

First thing I would try is resetting the machine SMC.

  • Fan not turning on...

Hey guys, hoping you can help me out.
My fan is not turning on and the case is hot to the touch. Noticed this a few days ago. Usually the fan turns on before it gets this hot.
I have run Cocktail maintenance and I have reset the PRAM, but still no go. I also have noticed that my machine chokes up doing simple things such as swithcing applications—like from Safari to Mail or Preview. Nothing overly CPU intensive.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

    BGreg,
Turns out, my HDD was going bad. I actually found out yesterday morning when my machine froze during boot-up (spinning pinwheel). I booted from my Tiger Disc and ran Disc Utility...Low and behold the "Failure" warning from the S.M.A.R.T.
To answer your question though, I actually did run Activity Monitor during those fwe days and the cpu load was low. I didn't have my Hardware Test Disc since I am on vacation. Also don't have a processor temp application. DO you have any suggestions?
Anyhow, I had to call Apple Care to make sure they can cover the repair of my Pbook while I am on vacation here in the Philippines-which they do since APP is global for portables
NOTE: If you don't have Apple Care with a Powerbook, I highly suggest it. It's worth the piece of mind. My PBook was just 3months out of the 1yr Hardware Warranty.

  • IBook fell; not turning on

My daughter has an older iBook (it's dated 2001 on the bottom) and it was knocked off her couch; it fell approx 12" onto a carpeted floor. Now it will not turn on at all. I checked beneath the keyboard and nothing seems loose/ajar. The metal plug of the A/C adapter is slightly bent, but it still connects to the unit and lights up.
I'm not "Apple savvy" at all, so any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
You could try _resetting the PMU_, but it's likely that the iBook is a goner.
With the plug of the adapter bent, I would recommend that you don't use the adapter or you risk damaging the power input (DC-in) board (that is, if the fall itself didn't damage the DC-in board—such a fall often does).
The new MacBook has a MagSafe adapter which connects to the port magnetically, so if it should ever suffer such a fate, the adapter lets loose instead of damaging things.

  • Msi gs 70 backlight on the keyboard not turning on anymore

i have had my gs70 for about a month now, and all is working fine (other than the windows 8.1 bs with the mouse pad) until i pressed the function key with the + and/or the - key(s) by the number pad on the right of the keyboard. the backlight of the keyboard now does not turn on. even when the computer starts back up it doesn't even turn on for that slight moment as the computer starts up.  so... anyone who has some sort of solution other than reseting the whole computer, experience with this bug/glitch/pain give me suggestions cheers

With the GS series of laptops, there is no removable battery.
Therefore you need to remove the AC adapter, and push a button with a pin/paperclip on the side of the laptop and hold it in for approximately 10 seconds I believe. Then apply AC and turn the laptop on. That should do it, hopefully.
If that didn't fix it, hmmm.....
The next thing I might suggest looking at is inside the BIOS. I'm not 100% sure with the GS70, but there might be a setting in there that enables/disables the backlight. Could you check in there?

  • My Ibooks will not open samples anymore

my Ibooks will not longer open samples.  before it was not a problem. just started recently .  when i click on "sample", it says "downloading" but then when that process ends, I am not able to open the sample. I have the latest version of Ibooks.  I have deleted the app and reinstalled it, but still have the same problem.
    thanks,
    john

If you can't open a particular ibook then try deleting it from the bookshelf via the Edit button at the top right of the bookshelf, and (assuming that it's still in your country's store) redownload it via the Purchased tab in the ibookstore in the app (or if you have a copy of it on your computer's iTunes library sync it back from there).
