IBook fell; not turning on

My daughter has an older iBook (it's dated 2001 on the bottom) and it was knocked off her couch; it fell approx 12" onto a carpeted floor. Now it will not turn on at all. I checked beneath the keyboard and nothing seems loose/ajar. The metal plug of the A/C adapter is slightly bent, but it still connects to the unit and lights up.
I'm not "Apple savvy" at all, so any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
You could try _resetting the PMU_, but it's likely that the iBook is a goner.
With the plug of the adapter bent, I would recommend that you don't use the adapter or you risk damaging the power input (DC-in) board (that is, if the fall itself didn't damage the DC-in board—such a fall often does).
The new MacBook has a MagSafe adapter which connects to the port magnetically, so if it should ever suffer such a fate, the adapter lets loose instead of damaging things.

  • Ibook will not turn on, please help. ASAP

I have an i book laptop but i am not sure what model it is. I just know that it is about 4 to 5 years old. I used to have some one that could fix it for me and tell me what is wrong. But i do not have them any more. My computer will not turn on. Even when i plug the power block into it. I have looked at the mac support things. but none of them have helped me. if some one out there could help me i would be sooooooo great full. Please some one try to help me solve this problem. i have tried the (PMU) restet, when you press shift, ctrl, option simultaneously. Then you are supposed to wait 5 seconds then turn it on. that did not work. For many months now i have been struggling with this problem. i really need some help, because the mac support on this website has not been helping me. So maybe by creating this account, and writing this letter. Some one will come to help me.
By the way i cant even find out what OS it is because i cant turn it on to find its information

Thanks - but I can't see anything, the screen is dead (which is why I put the disk in - I was following the troubleshooting instructions), all I hear is the fan, but there's no screen prompt. I've tried resetting the PMU and the PRAM without success -- I've been having this problem on and off for a few weeks but it usually started ok the second or third time. Now, however, it's not working at all.
    Hi,
You may be able to eject the CD by starting in open
    firmware.
Hold down the command-option-o-f keys as you start.
When you see some text on the screen release them. At
the prompt type "eject cd" (without the quotes) and
press return. It should eject after a few seconds.
Next try resetting the NVRAM. At the prompt type:
    reset-nvram <return>
    set-defaults <return>
    reset-all <return>
It should restart after the third command is
    entered.

  • IBook will not turn on at all

Hello everyone, this is my first post.
My problem: I have a late-2005 iBook G4 1.33MHZ superdrive etc. I believe this is the last iBook Apple made before the MacBooks came out.
About a month ago, with no warning signs whatsoever (so slowing down, no fan wheezing, nothing) the computer just turned off and will not turn back on.
The battery was fully charged and the unit was on AC power when it happened. The green AC light still comes on and the green battery buttons will glow when I push the button on the bottom, but otherwise the machine will not even power up.
Unfortunately I'm no longer under warranty. I'm assuming it's the logic board.
The only other information I can give is that something bumped the left side of the computer about 2 hours before it shut itself off, but not any harder than other bumps my poor little computer has sustained.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks,
    Chris

Well two things come to mind, actually 3 but 2 are related.
First is the power chip U28 described here:
    http://www.coreyarnold.org/ibook/
Diagnosable via pressure or shim as described.
The 2nd would be the GPU chip. It's an ATI Mobility Radeon 9550 4x AGP for the 12" and a 9200 on the 14". I have a 12" 1.33 board that has a dead 9550 chip and there are known failures on the 9200.
So on that same chip there are also BGA failures (the way the chip is soldered to the board) this can also be diagnosed by shim repair or by putting pressure on the chip from the top or the bottom. That chip is generally in the area on the top of the logic board under the option key.
Both problems can be fixed permanently by soldering in the first and reballing in the second case.

  • IBook fan not turning on anymore

    Hi!
I'm using my iBook G4 (1.33 GHz) for about 9 months now and most of that time i played some game every now and then (hardware intense games like Halo or World of Warcraft). Normally, the fan started working for a few minutes and everything was fine. But in the last days (it's really hot here in Vienna...), the fan never turned on. Even when I'm playing WoW and the temperature reaches 72 degrees C, the fan doesn't turn on (normally it starts at about 65 C). I'm really wondering if this has got something to do with the 10.4.7 update because I didn't play for a few weeks and now this problem arised.
Are there any known problems with this update? Or is there some software that allows me to turn on the fan manually?
    Thanks in advance,
    Marco
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I have had my iBook g4 1.42ghz for almost a year now. I have not once heard the CPU fan turn on, not even when playing Doom 3.
Then again, my CPU rarely passes the 55 degree mark.
It should be the case that if the CPU gets too hot, the iBook will shut itself down.
Does anyone know the max temp for the CPU before failure?
My main concern is not for every single instance you would expect the fan to come on, so much as accumulated damage to the mainboard from maintaining such high temps. Maybe you should run a hardware test? Heck, with everything you have already tried, you may as well boot to the install disk and run disk repair and repair permissions. I can't imagine what could be wrong with the filesystem\permission that would cause this, but sometimes a little nonsensical voodoo magic cures problems that should not be related to these things.
Good luck, and keep an external fan blowing on your machine until this is resolved.

  • IBook will not turn on.

    similar to previous posts
    1. now I sometimes get a whirling cog and the machine shuts off - if the machine even starts
    2. previously I got booted up with the wrong data (1969) then the machine shut off unexpectedly
I am considering donating it - only if I can get it working and wipe off the personal data.

The fact that it starts to power on and then shuts itself off sounds like there may be a short circuit inside the machine and the power supply circuit is trying to protect you from frying something. You should immediately get the machine serviced. It may be something as simple as one of the metal EMI shields getting bent in such a way that it contacts a power contact somewhere.
That said, you might try starting it up with no battery. If the problem goes away, it might be that the battery itself has an internal short. If that fixes the problem, try a second battery to make sure that this is really the problem.
You might also try without the power adapter hooked up, though I doubt that's the problem unless you tripped over the power cord.

  • Full battery but will not turn on

    Hi,
I can tell that my battery is completely charged, but my ibook will not turn on. It is completely unresponsive. I would appreciate any help, thanks.
    Katie

    Hi!
You may have to try and see if you can perform a "power management
unit reset" and some information on how to do that with your computer
should be on this page/link: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
With each portable model the instructions vary; and with desktop units,
they are different also. Some require you to remove the battery, while
others have keyboard combinations; and then there are means which
require the user to go into open firmware; but if it will not start first, the
open firmware options are not practical, of course!
Not sure if removing the battery and trying to run the computer
    from the AC power adapter alone could help in troublehshooting;
but this may involve a trip to a service center if it won't run at all.
    Good luck in this matter!

  • My ibook g4 will not turn on at all.

My ibook g4 will not turn on at all the story is: I had it on and with it plugged into the outlet but i had to charge my nano so i unplugged it the computer turn off and the battery was at "100%"  and it was inserted in the battery port so i had to take the battery out and left the power adapter on the ibook with it plugged in but it still will not turn and now i removed the adapter from the computer and i put the battery back in and pressed the power on button and it wouldn't still turn on please help!

  • IBook G3 800 GHz will work on battery power but will not turn on with AC pl

This iBook will function with a battery, but when the AC is plugged in it does nothing. It will not turn on. Is this a logic board problem or maybe a short or something not connected inside for the AC plug?

    It's a rather complicated repair:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/iBook-G3-12-Inch-DC-In-Board/134/1
    Apple doesn't consider it a do-it-yourself job.
Expect to pay $115-$145 for the repair (plus shipping if you have to send it away). The iBook may not be worth the repair, so some people are trying to do it themselves.

  • IBook won't turn on

So this is actually a question for my mom. Her iBook G4 has not been working correctly.
Sometimes (not all the time) her computer will not turn on after she turns it off. The only way we can get it to turn back on is:
    1. Take out the battery and unplug
    2. Hold down the power button (clear out the internal battery)
    3. We leave it sit for like 4-8 hours
    4. Plug it in and turn it on. It will then turn on.
This is a real problem, seeing as she can't do anything for an extended period of time. I would like to find out what the problem is exactly.
    Thanks,
    Andrew

The only possible explanation in my mind that would require a 4-8 hour between time is an overheat problem in which without active cooling, it would take an awful long time to discharge excess heat. Is the iBook getting very hot or are the fans running continuously whilst on? If its a Power Management Unit problem, you could always try and reset the PMU. unfortunately, without a model number, i will have to guess which procedure to give you to reset the PMU, so first verify that your mothers computer falls within this set of models included in the link below. Best of luck

  • Ibook g4 cant turn on with charger, but works fine with battery

i have a ibook g4 cant turn on with charger.
using battery, ibook works fine-----so not the battery problem
charger works fine on other ibook-----so not the charger problem
the DC-in board works fine on other ibook-----so not the DC-in problem
    reset the PMU----no work.
when the battery is on ibook, plug in the charger, light is green, but will not charge the battery. in OS X it shows running on battery. if run out off battery, will turn off.
if took off the battery, and plug the charger, cant turn on; and light is dark.
    any idea?
PMU chip is broken? how can i change the PMU?
    thanks a lot

    you are holding Shift-Control-Option-Power correct?
To replace the PMU requires a new / refurb logic board.
