IBook finished?

Hey
I have an iBook 800 Mhz, late 2003, I think.
Keeps crashing when I use Safari, especially on Youtube.
(Serious crash, 2-3 restarts required)
So:
#1 Repair permissions and OnyX-check
#2 Hardware test (extended)-check
#3 A clean install, Tiger, update to 10.4.11-check
The computer seems to be OK.
But problem still persists.
This iBook won´t install 10.5 and I suspect
that latest version of Safari is causing the trouble?
Any idea?
JanD

The 800 Mhz iBook does not meet the technical specs for Leopard, so you won't be able to install 10.5.
If you want to check out your hard drive, you might want to try running S.M.A.R.T. Utility:
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/32454
You can download the demo and run it several times for free. It will give you a good look at your hard drive that will help you to determine if it is on its way out. Also, it wouldn't hurt to verify the disk and repair if necessary.
I'm away from my iBook (same model), but I seem to remember that it has had some freezes with Safari 4.0. I left on a trip shortly after updating Safari, so I haven't had much time to monitor it. However, I seem to remember that you could see it hanging in Activity Monitor. I have a new 120 GB hard drive, so an aging drive is not the problem with mine. I am also running 10.4.11.
Hope this helps!

  • IBooks in ios6 does not open. I get a message saying, the operation could not be finished.(cocoa error 513). What do I do?

Since upgrading to iOS 6 I am getting this message when
I try to open iBooks. This operation could not be finished. ( Cocoa error 513)
I have deleted and re- installed iBooks several times. How do I get iBooks to work?

I was just on the phone with an Apple Engineer and we had to do a system restore.  Once this was done the ibooks were able to download successfully.  Apple did not know of the cocoa error 513.
all is working perfect after completely doing a backup and system restore.

  • PDF files in iBooks will not finish downloading

I have attempted to download several PDF files in iBooks but they won't finish downloading and I cannot delete them. What do I do?

Update on this problem, I just added a pdf to ibooks to see if a new one would open, all the old ones are gone now, bummer and not so good.  I am going to do a synch tomorrow and see if I can recreate the problem, have a feeling this is an issue with synching?

  • HT5071 I almost finished my iBook and layed out almost 100 pages. Now I wanted to edit chapters and Sections by moving them into certain areas of the 100 pages. It will not work, adn I have no clue where to go from there. Any advise?

I almost finished 100 pages on the iBook Author. Unfortunately, I just created one page after the other (with lots of graphics and pictures). Having done that, I wanted to edit the iBook by placing Chapters and Sections between these pages.
I used iBook Author Help and Publishing with iBook Author for advise, but I am unable to move Chapters and Sections between the already finished pages. I get the strange feeling I did the whole thing wrong and wasted many hours for nothing. Anyone out there who struggled with the same problem? I self published a book already and wanted to use iBook Author to update and upgrade my existing book. Any advise is very much appreciated, thank you. Wolf

You may also try starting a "fresh" copy from scratch and copying and pasting into it with the order you want. I have succeeded in this a few times.

  • My itouch will not finish downloading this iBook

A couple days ago I was able to download iBooks, but when I started this one it wont get off the downloading screen and the bar wont even budge. I can't figure out why after google searching and trying different answers, and no, rebooting doesnt work. Any ideas?

Ditto.  I bought a book.  It downloaded to my iPad.  It has been downloading on my iPhone for weeks.  Can't delete it, have reinstalled iBooks only to have book appear again and start downloading but never completes.
If I move to my PDF screen and back to the books screen, the blue bar goes back to 0% and it just sits there.  When I try to go download it from the store again, it says it has been downloaded.
I tried to sync with iTunes and install book from iTunes, but it will not install teh book and continues to try to download the book and never finishes.
Nothing has helped.  Restarted iPhone, deleted iBooks, tried to install from iTunes, tried to download a free book, book is still stuck on download and won't stop.  Major confusion on why this is such a problem, and not an uncommon one.

  • My ibooks are not syncing with my iPad. Many are simply stuck in a "downloading" status, but never finish.

MY iBooks are not properly synching with my iPad. Many of the books are stuck in a "downloading" status. But they never finish and are not added to my library. I have tried resetting the iPad and it is running the latest release of iOS.
    Thank you!

  • HT5067 When using a Keynote Widget with iBooks Author, do the transitions and builds between Keynote slides appear in the iPad preview version of the iBook, or only in the finished product?

I'm using the Keynote Widget in iBooks Author, and the Keynote presentation uses the Magic move transition between slides.  When I preview the iBook on a new iPad, the Magic move transitions don't show up (i.e. the transition from slide to slide is standard, not Magic move).  Any suggestions?

Hyperlinks and magic move should work but don't. However I  found the following as a workaround for me. Use three slides instead of two to generate the magic move effect in Keynote presentations on Ibooks using hyperlinks only. As an example
Supose an object on  slide 1 was set as a hyperlink to go to a slide which then had a magic move effect to a third slide. For some reason it works on the mac, but not on ibooks. However you can create the magic move transition effect by simply adding a "dummy slide" as follows.  Suppose an object on slide 1 had an object which would hyperlink to slide 4. Duplicate Slide 4, and make the duplicate slide 5. Then set Slide 4  to automatically transition (with no effect) to the next slide (i.e. slide 5) after .5 seconds. Have Slide 5 set to transition to Slide 6 using magic move automatically after .5 seconds. By having the hyperlink point to slide 4 the magic move effect from Slide 5 to Slide 6 works fine (with a brief 1 sec delay). IF the hyperlink pointed directly to Slide 5, the magic move transition to slide 6 would not work.
For some reason having an extra slide makes magic move work even though it is not needed on the mac. I hpe this helps.

  • I have finished my iBook but want to change the size before ordering. Is it possible

Finished book.  Can the size be changed before placing order?

Sure - what version of iPhoto? Ad is OS X 10.4.8 as you state correct?
Assuming it is not and you have iPhoto '11 then you simple select the book and duplicate it (Command D), open the copy and click on "change theme" and select the same theme and the new size -
Before ordering your book preview it using this method - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1040 - and save the resulting PDF for reference - the delivered book will match it.
the preview is critical since with a new size text may reflow

  • HT201272 A book I downloaded using iBooks seems to have frozen and won't finish downloading. What can I do to get it to resume?

It says its downloading but there is no progress what so ever.

    Hi Bradyfromidaho,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
The article below should answer your question.
You can click on the link to see more details and screen shots.
I've highlighted the pertinent information for you below.
iTunes: How to resume interrupted iTunes Store downloads
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1725?viewlocale=it_it
If your download was interrupted on your computer
You will be prompted to resume your download the next time you quit and reopen iTunes. You can also manually restart the download with the following steps.
    Resuming downloads from a computer
    Open iTunes.
Choose Store > Check for Available Downloads.
Enter your account name and password.
    Click the "Check Downloads" button.
Click the Resume or Resume All button, or the resume arrow to resume the download.
If you believe that the item downloaded completely but it is not appearing in the Purchased playlist, click Library on the left side of iTunes to see if the item appears there.
If your download was interrupted on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
You can manually resume the download on your device with the following steps.
Resuming downloads from an iOS device
From the Home screen, tap the iTunes icon.
For iPhone/iPod touch, tap More > Downloads. For iPad, tap Downloads.
Enter your account name and password.
    Click the "OK" button.
Click the Resume, Resume All button to start the download.
If you cannot complete the download on your device, you can finish the download in iTunes on your computer and then sync it to your device. For instructions, see the following articles:
iTunes Store: Where can I download and sync my purchases?
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer
    Additional Information
If your purchase does not resume downloading after following the steps in this article, you can also try the following steps to troubleshoot the download issue.
    Restart your computer or device.
Check for updates for your Mac or PC and install any software updates. Also, check for and install updates for any security software you may have (anti-virus, anti-malware, firewall, and so on).
If using Wi-Fi for Internet access, try using a different Wi-Fi network when downloading. If you are connecting to a home network, try restarting your Wi-Fi router. Also, check for and install any firmware updates for your Wi-Fi router. (Refer the manufacturer's website for your router to get information on updating its firmware).
If you are on a computer, try using an ethernet cable for wired Internet access instead of using Wi-Fi. If the issue is still unresolved and you're using iTunes for Windows, follow steps in iTunes for Windows: Troubleshooting security software issues.
I hope this information helps ....
    Have a great day!

  • My original iBook Graphite falls asleep when just finished starting up.

OK, first, I was working on my ibook when my cat came up with spilling my coffe on my ibook, then I ran to the apple store and made them fix it at all cost, then they told me that the battery connector was ureparably broken, so I live with my mac always wired on, and changing the date and time every time I disconnect it, now, the real problem is this: I downloaded and installed the os 9.2.1 update for mi ibook, everything all right, then the message of restarting my computer appaered, it restarted all normal, then when it entered the multiple users window it just falls asleep, i can wake it up for about 4 seconds, then, asleep, there's no other symptom, the thingy flashes as normal, etc...
I have tried resseting the PMU several times, but nothing, I dont know what's happening!!!!!!!
HELP!!!!, I don't wanna throw my computer, I love it.
    Thanks
    P.S.
Sorry if I posted a question already posted, is just that there are like 2,002 questions and posts, so it would take a great time to look at them all.
ibook g3 original   Mac OS 9.2.x
ibook g3 original graphite   Mac OS 9.2.x

If you have another Mac, hook up your ibook harddrive to that and copy your files and data across and wipe the drive clean then do the updates respectively. Then you could transfer you data from the other mac back and it should work fine. I think it may be an extension conflict, it sounds as though it would originate from a power managment sort of thing. I haven't used OS 9 for more than a day when my ibook shipped until i upgraded to OS X so im sorry if the details are sketchy.
Also is there a repair or diagnostic feature on the OS 9 cd. Because if so, you could boot the cd and attempt a repair from there.

  • IBook G4 won't finish starting

It's a 12.1" 1.33 I just got on eBay. Just as the seller described, it will bong, show the apple and sprocket, and then on the screen that says "starting os x" the progress bar fills and then just stays there. I tried to reset the PRAM but it wouldn't. When I get it home I will try it with my retail Tiger disk and if that doesn't work, try target disk mode, to see what's up with it. But for now, does this sound familiar to anybody, and what is it?

If the iBook G4 12" 1.33GHz model happens to be of the
last build series (Mid-2005) the original install-restore disc
set would be: Mac OS X 10.4.2 (8D37) and a later one of
the same build series, could be: Mac OS X 10.4.4 (8G32)
This would be consistent with the iBook G4 (Mid-2005)
July 2005 to May 2006 build series, including 12" 1.33GHz
and the 14" 1.42GHz models. Earlier than this, the 12" iBook
G4 had a 1.2GHz processor, & used different upgrade RAM.
So, you could use a serial number identity service and see if
you can get more precise information on the build model to
tell what it really is and then get a better match of Tiger 10.4
install discs; since you need either the correct disc, or one
that is a retail version that is newer than the as-shipped one.
    • Lookup Mac Specs by serial number:
    http://www.everymac.com/ultimate-mac-lookup/
Note the main ^ site also has many model specs and is a resource.
You could check the MacTracker database (download) to
see what match the correct part numbers for the original
install-restore 10.4.2 or 10.4.4 DVD are, to replace them.
    • Get MacTracker: http://mactracker.ca - & note specs, info.
Your computer probably is too old now to try & get an
    official copy of the correct iBook install-restore disc set;
that would have been possible through the Apple sales
phone number (using serial number as reference) to ask
if you could buy the disc, since it also had the correct
Apple Hardware Test version for the computer on it, too.
The phone number to ask, if you are curious, to see if
the disc is still available, was 1-800-MY-APPLE and you'd
ask a product specialist about getting replacement set of
original discs. These may have been discontinued by now.
Some had suggested to call the AppleCare support number
in some instances, to see if they could get the correct ones.
There would be a fee, but if available, the discs help a lot.
I've been careful to keep my original discs, and consider
them essential parts of the computer itself; to troubleshoot
the hardware; to include with the computer, & pass forward.
While the computer may be able to support Leopard 10.5
the status of the unit is unknown, and a retail full install disc
would be necessary to boot the computer. There is no test
for hardware on the retail Tiger or Leopard disc set; while
the original install-restore set has other software plus OS X.
If the computer is really not serviceable, hope it is returnable.
And there may be some other problems with the unit.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • IBook G4 won't finish booting up

I tried to start up my iBook G4 last night (with the power cord, the battery had run out) and when it tried to boot up, it told me that the date & time had been set before March 1, 2001. This is nothing new, I've had it before. When I tried to hit OK, the computer is still "thinking"...with the little swirly multi-colored spiral thing. I left it alone hoping it would correct itself and it never did. I tried rebooting and even removed the battery to start over but to no avail, it started up with the same problem. I also tried to hit alt-apple-escape but it wouldn't work either.
Pleeeeease tell me it's not fried. I can't handle losing everything on that computer.

I don't know of any way to recover from this kind of problem. If you have access to another computer and an external Hard Drive, you could try booting the iBook from an external Hard Drive (the other computer is for installing the OS on the external if it is not already there). After booting from the external, transfer any data that you want to save and reformat.
Other than that, I'm stumped. Good Luck.

Each time I make an attempt to download the free book Year in Focus 2013 I get a message that states cannot connect to iTunes even though I am connected and after several hours of downloading.  I have rebooted twice now and making another attempt but so far does not look promising. Hi Tintin01,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If you're being repeatedly prompted to install the 64-bit version of iTunes, I'd suggest first completely uninstalling iTunes and all its related components using the steps found here:
Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
Once you've uninstalled iTunes and its components, install the latest version of iTunes found here:
    iTunes 11.0.4 for Windows 64
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1615
    Best Regards,
