IBook Freeze Up Memory(?) Problem

I have a 14” 800 MHz G3. It has 128 MB permananent RAM and came with another 128MB in the additional slot. Shortly after buying the iBook in 2003, I bought a 512MB memory module to bring the total RAM up to the maximum of 640MB.
Everything went quite swell for a number of years. Then, earlier this summer, our computer started doing some quirky freezing up which got progressively worse until we could not turn it on for more than a minute or so before everything would freeze and we would get the gray screen of death.
I ran the Hardware Test disc that came with the machine and it identified the problem as coming from the auxilliary memory slot. Lo and behold, when I took out the additional memory module, the computer functioned normally again (although, of course, very slowly with only 128MB total RAM). So I thought I had identified the memory module as the culprit, which seemed to be confirmed by the fact that the iBook also operated correctly (and marginally faster) when I reinstalled the additional 128MB module that had come with the machine.
I returned the purchased module to the retailer (lifetime warranty) for a warranty replacement and they sent me a new module. When I installed that one, the computer acted funky for a few times, then began to work normally. But this only lasted a couple of days and soon it was freezing up in a matter of minutes again. And again, the Hardware Test indicated the 512MB module as causing an error and removing it and putting in the original 128MB cured the problem.
I contacted the retailer and they informed me (1) that the module they sent me had been tested before shipping; (2) that they tested the module I had returned to them and found no problems with it; and (3) that the iBook memory slot is known to go bad and cause problems. Also, when I was searching for information on the web, I came across some references to the upgrade to version 10.3.9 creating issues.
Does anyone have any ideas about this?
Thanks.

You hadn't mentioned the multi-language message. What you are seeing are _kernel panics_, and bad memory is one of the most common causes.
Have you tried running the Apple Hardware Test CD with the 128 MB module installed? That would be a sure check on whether it is the memory module or the slot.
I think your RAM vendor is not being truthful with you. If the slot checks out, call and tell them that the 128 MB RAM module you have works perfectly fine in your computer, but their 512 MB module does not. This contradicts their contention that the fault lies with the computer. It can't possibly be so.
I wouldn't accuse them of lying. I would suggest that perhaps this module was damaged in shipping (and ignore their assertion that the one shipped back tested out okay). Tell them you want a replacement until you get one that works or you want your money back so you can buy one elsewhere.
Good luck.

    Hello everyone

So you can see that my free mem decreases dramaticly until it's 0 then .. FREEZE (about 8 s ) and after that 150Mb ~ free mem.
My memory grows when I do things like scrolling in firefox, watching video ..
And with my others distros I never saw something like that in the same configuration.
    Maybe someone can help me

I've got similar problem. After 5-10 minutes of system uptime almost all my 900Mb of memory are used. Regardles of what DE I use (be it KDEmod3, KDEmod4, Gnome, XFCE, E17) - after 10 minutes of system works I have only 10-20 Mb free.
P.S. I do not use 3D graphical desktops.

  • Computer freeze / Memory problem?

    Hi,
I assembled my new PC approx. 1 month ago (full spec attached at the bottom of the message).
Since then I'm having a lot of freezes (freeze, not BSOD). I tried using several OS versions with no luck, so I though it's a memory problem.
Testing the memory, each dimm by itself, with memtest86+ succeeded. I even tried to check each of the memory banks and the test still succeeded.
When testing with more than one dimm (both with single-channel and dual-channel configuration) I'm getting freezes during the check.
    What could be the problem?
    Thanks!
    The full spec:
    Case: Thermaltake Armor+ ESA VH6001BWS
    PSU: Thermaltake ESA 850W
CPU: Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9650
CPU Cooler: Thermaltake BigWater 780e ESA
Motherboard: MSI P7N2 Diamond (Bios version is 1.1, this also occurs at 1.0)
    Memory: 4 x OCZ DDR3 PC3-12800 Platinum 2GB (OCZ3P16004GK), 8GB Total
Sound card: MSI X-Fi Xtreme Audio (the one that is bundled with the P7N2)
GPU: MSI GeForce 280 GTX OC
OS: Windows Vista Ultimate with SP1 - x64 edition
The system is not overclocked at all, All the bios settings are set to default.

    OK, That's what I did:
Changed back the clock speed to auto (it was auto set back to 1333MHz), Changed the voltage of the memory and the NB back to "Auto".
Then I changed the memory to work as 9-9-9-24 and tested it with 2 dimms in a dual-channel configuration.
So far, It's looks like it's working and working well (2 passes completed successfully).
    Quote from: John_Doe on 18-January-09, 02:38:37
Assuming that the tests will go smooth, I would like to ask if this is a recommended configuration to stay with (1333MHz, voltages at "Auto", memory set to 9-9-9-24)?
Running those dimms not at overclocked & overvoltaged (and even in "lower speed" then it should) should prevent them from having short lifetime, Am I right?
Yes, because their DDR3 chips have been designed to work at 1333MHz with 9-9-9-24.
"Have been tested to work at 1600" is another fish in another (OCZ) ocean.
    good luck

  • Powerbook G4 freezes on me - memory problems..?

    Hi all,
I have just bought a new Powerbook G4 15inch as i read all sorts of varying articles on Macbook Pro's teething problems with Adobe etc so decided to go for the tried and trusted good old Powerbook.
So i got the retailer to boost it from 512mg to 2gb in the shop and after giving it a good workout (installing Illustrator, photoshop, microsoft etc) and playing with Itunes i find that it freezes on me every 15mins or so..! I'm told it could be a memory problem (maybe the 2 new 1gbs are not compatible). Or should i reinstall Tiger..?
    Any advice is welcome.. help..!
    G4 powerbook 15inch   Mac OS X (10.4.2)   1.67GHZ 2gigabytes 100GB

    Hello, Shane,
No, I've not had trouble with freezes on my powerbook. I did have a little trouble clicking in the RAM on the top slot properly, both on my PB and on a friend's, but in these cases, the PB beeped three times on startup (RAM "distress signal").
It has been my understanding that system freezes are often caused by faulty hardware--RAM, a peripheral device that is misbehaving, or a more serious problem such as logic board.
Running the hardware test in extended mode would help with this.
Some people have reported that they have solved system freezes when all the hardware checks out by doing an archive/installation of their operating system, or erasing the drive and re-installing from scratch.
    Good luck.

I also would be remiss in not pointing out that since your Powerbook is new, Apple is available to help you troubleshoot, and in case there is a serious hardware issue, making an early report is advisable.

  • OS 10.4.11 on iBook G4 mouse selection problem

I have a rebuilt iBook G4 (after hard disc crash) which I have 'wound  back' at least 5 years to encourage  compatibilities. (At the moment I can't afford to upgrade.)  So I'm sticking with Panther (10.4.11), Firefox 3.0.19, Eudora 6.2.4, iTunes 6, Office 2004.  It's fine except for a persistent problem with mouse key input freezes.  Mouse tracking is fine, keyboard input continues, but mouse input to all applications and OS becomes impossible and there is no way out but to restart.
I've tried changing back to an old ball-mouse (it's not the mouse drivers), switching off Firefox plugins (don't think it's them), Alt-Command-Esc force quitting Firefox and then other applications.  I've searched the back pages of the net for insights (lots of memory problems with Panther causing mouse failure, but not this particular problem.
    Any memories ?

    Hello Iain,
Open Console in Applications>Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

    /System/Library/StartupItems
    /System/Library/LaunchDaemons

TenFourFox is the most up to date browser for our PPCs, they even have G4 & G5 optimized versions, but the newest version doesn't support any plugins at all, so look for an older one...

SeaMonkey seems pretty fast also, with many options...

  • IBook freezes - any ideas?

    Hello,
I have some trouble with my iBook (G4, 14``inch, 1.33Ghz). I bought it in November 2004 and got additional memory (512MB) installed at the shop. It run fine until August 2004, when the ethernet port was no longer detected. As a case of guarantee the logic board was changed and everything seemed okay, but shortly after that the iBook started to freeze or crash now and then. After two total system crashes at the end of last year I took a closer look to the problem and found, that in the system profiler most times the built-in memory (256MB) was referred as "empty". Resetting of PRAM und PMU didn't change anything. Then I extracted the additional memory and surprisingly the iBook run fine again. I tried a new memory (again 512MB), but the iBook again started to freeze after a few minutes. My guess was that the memory slot was defect. A problem, which I can clearly live with. So I run the iBook for two days (only built-in memory) and everything was okay, but yesterday I made an intensive session (several installations and then some applications at the same time over 3-4h) and after a while the iBook slowed down and eventually froze. I wasn't able to restart until today (after about 6h, but of course I didn't try the whole night). Has anyboby an idea, what's could be wrong? Is it possible, that my iBook has a heating-problem? That's another possibility that occured to me yesterday.

Ronda, we're talking past each other!  I wasn't trying to use a cloned drive (MBP or iBook) in any of this!
What I had learned from experience (and from advice here and on the net) was that if you wanted to use an external drive with both an iBook and a MacBook Pro, you needed to format the drive as an Apple Partition Map.  And that is true.
Clearly wrongly, I assumed that if I did a fresh install of Tiger using an Apple Partittion Map, it could boot an iBook.  Clearly, an Intel-Mac installs something in that scenario that makes the drive only bootable from an Intel-Mac.  I had mistakenly thought it was the partition scheme the determined which laptop it could be booted from and used with!
For my future reference--and for any one else who might be in this situation--here's the solution.
    1.  Format the external hard from the iBook.
    2.  Then connect it to your MBP or other more recent device, and drag your home folder and needed programs over to the drive.
    3.  Now, you can boot the external drive using your iBook.
    4.  Any changes to documents, mail (e.g., Eudora), etc. will register on that external drive.
I wish I had thought of that, or been advised to do that.  It would have made short work of reconstructing the MBP's home folder contents on its return--a simple drag and drop operation!

  • Memory Problems with Adobe PDF iFilter for 64-bit

In preparation to rebuild my Windows Search Index, I installed the Adobe PDF iFilter for 64-bit on my system (Vista Business 64).  When I finally rebuilt the index, I wasn't too surprised by what I saw happen, namely, the SearchFilter.exe process would kick in whenever I wasn't using the system and just eat RAM.  One time I turned it on and it had allocated over 4,000 MB (and my system only has 4,030 MB available) so of course it was forcing all the other processes to hard fault (ie. everything was moving like molasses--for example, it took 20 minutes to put the thing to sleep).  But I just let it do it's work, figuring that perhaps this was to be expected relative to the small library of PDF's that I've accumulated on my computer, ranging from LaTeX generated text files, to containers for hi-res scans.  So, after a day and a half of basically not using my laptop, everything finally calmed down and I enjoyed the benefits of searching the content of my library from the Windows Start menu--for a short while.
However, to my dismay I've encountered the problem that this freezing of my computer would now occur after everytime I download a new PDF (in this particular case they were Google Books scans) and then left the computer to idle.  Again, the SearchFilter.exe would allocate all of my RAM for itself and just push everything else onto the Virtual RAM, which means the SLOWEST possibly fetching you can get.  I had to uninstall as this was making my computer unusable for 15-30 minutes after each idle. Everything is back in working order without the iFilter, but I would like to know if anyone has reported such problems on x64 systems.  Obviously, I will also report the problem to Microsoft, since the search engine should certainly have the precaution to handle such memory problems.   However, it is a problem that is created by the Adobe PDF iFilter interacting with the Windows Search engine.

    Hello,
We believe we have figured this out.  It looks like it has to do with the length of the default folder location for the Adobe iFilter.
I was able to reproduce the issue and the following resolved it for me.  See if this resolves it for you all as well.
Here is how to get Adobe Version 11 PDF filter to work.
1 . If you haven’t already, run the following in SQL Server:
    Sp_fulltext_service ‘Load_os_resources’, 1
    Go
--you might also need to run:
sp_fulltext_service ‘Verify_signature’,0  --This is used to validate trusted iFilters. 0 disables it. So use with caution.
    --go
    2. Stop SQL Server.  (Make sure FDHost.exe stops)
    3.
Uninstall the Adobe ifilter (because it defaulted to having spaces or the folder name is too long).
    4.
Reinstall the Adobe iFilter and when it prompts for where to install it, change it to: C:\Program Files\Adobe\PDFiFilter
    5.  Once the installation finishes, go the computer’s Environment variables. Add the following to the PATH.
    C:\Program Files\Adobe\PDFiFilter\BIN
NOTE: it must include the BIN folder
NOTE: If you had the OLD location that included spaces, remove it from the path environment variable.
    6. Start SQL Server
    7.  IF you had an existing Full-text index on PDFs, drop the full-text index and recreate it.
    8. You should now get results when you run sys.dm_fts_index_keywords('db','tblname')  --Note: Change db to be the actual database name and tblname to be the actual table name.
Give this a try and see if this fixes yours.
    Sincerely,
    Rob Beene, MSFT

  • IBook freeze

I have a problem with my ibook freezing that started a few days ago; it began by freezing at the blue screen (prior to the login window), and now will variously freeze at black screen, grey screen, apple logo, or on rare occasion make it to the desktop.
    The particulars:
    ibook G4 800 with 512 additional RAM, Airport, 60 G HD (new)
I have done fsck (no reported issues), Disk repair utility- repair permissions, repair disk, Hardware test (no reported issues, but I couldn't do the loop test due to freezing) Disk Warrior, I installed a new hard drive with a clean install of OSX (I installed 10.3), (no effect), and have tried starup with and without the removeable RAM and Airport installed (no difference).
I'm out of ideas, but am beginning to think that the problem may be with the fixed RAM; however I can't run the ibook long enough to get a good test without freeze up. One additional note: the problem seems to get progresively worse the longer the ibook has been on, i.e. it gets further into startup say, if it has rested overnight.
Anyone have thoughts on this? Also, if it is the fixed RAM, does that mean a new logic board?
    Thanks all!

I hate to add on to everyone else but the same thing has happened to me. It stalls on the opening grey screen with the swirling circle, then after about 15 mins or so it goes to an empty blue screen with mouse capabilities(meaning I see the mouse arrow, and can be moved). Im kind of runnin the same specs as the first poster. I really don't want to get have my wallet raped over getting this laptop fixed. Is there any help for us?

  • Memory problem please help Idmediently

Hey guys, Ive got an ipad 3 (16gb) and I had a look on my memory i have a few games and apps (GarageBand, keynote, imovie, pages, monoply, game of life and a few others) and it said 12.2 gb used and 1.2gb available i think that's counted wrong and I know approx 1000mb is 1gb it's impossible what do I do to get it accurate, even my brain holds more memory than that! Please help ASAP also I've tried restarting it
Here is a list of apps:
    GarageBand 696mb
    Imovie 531mb
    Ibooks 366mb
    Keynote 362mb
    Numbers 336mb
    Pages 311mb
And 52 apps are 150mb and under
I know that I had the same number of apps yesterday and the memory was 8.2gb I want it to be accurate.
    Reply ASAP.

Centipedee, No memory problem, you don't have enough room. It can take at least 2 times the required memory to load an app to the iPod. Once it loads it only requires 1.8GB of memory space but to get it there you'll need at least (maybe more) 3.6GB of space, I know it sounds screwy but it's how it works. Hope this helps, Good luck.

    * When powering up the phone stops at a white blank screen until * I press the power button again.
    * When starting the music player all buttons associated with the music player(both on phone and handsfree) becomes unresponsive and the only way to stop the music is to remove the battery to turn off the phone.
Another problem that occasionally occurs even if I have more free space on my memory card is:
    * When using the alarm clock there is a 33% chance that the phone will freeze when I turn it off. The only way to use the phone again is to remove the battery.
I haven't updated the phone yet because the update isn't available yet in sweden it seems.

This may be the issue, New content!:
Scanning for new content (slowness in UI)
    - This is somewhat improved in 11.018 but still:
    - If you've loaded many Pictures, Videos or Music, you may see the device appear to slow down or even become unresponsive. After new content has been added, it is being scanned by the device and being added to the media applications. Until that happens, the new content may not be visible in these applications (e.g. Photos and Video Center application) right away. The phone will need to find the files and create the thumbnails and other details. This information creation takes time and the processing may slow down the device. Your best option is to open Video Center and Photos and leave open in the background then check after a few minutes if the videos and pictures you loaded are already there before using your device.
The same applies if you insert a memory card with lots of content on it.
    - Do Not leave the Photos or video center in background during this time.

In this code i m facing memory problem.
It is not refreshing the memory every time.
So plz give me proper solution.
    Its urgent.
    Thanks
    Ranveer

    Hi,
I suppose you are trying to store some particular value in memory in one program and then retieve it in another.
If so try using EXPORT data TO MEMORY ID 'ZC1'. and IMPORT data FROM MEMORY ID 'ZC1'.
To use SET PARAMETER/GET PARAMETER the specified parameter name should be in table TPARA. Which I don't think is there in your case.
    Sample Code :
Data declarations for the function codes to be transferred
    DATA : v_first  TYPE syucomm,
           v_second TYPE syucomm.
    CONSTANTS : c_memid TYPE char10 VALUE 'ZCCBPR1'.
Move the function codes to the program varaibles
      v_first  = gv_bdt_fcode.
      v_second = sy-ucomm.
Export the function codes to Memory ID
    EXPORT v_first
v_second TO MEMORY ID c_memid.        "ZCCBPR1  --- Here you are sending the values to memory
    Then retrieve it.
Retrieve the function codes from the Memory ID
      IMPORT v_first  TO v_fcode_1
             v_second TO v_fcode_2
      FROM MEMORY ID c_memid.                                   "ZCCBPR1
      FREE MEMORY ID c_memid.                                   "ZCCBPR1
After reading the values from memory ID free them your problem should be solved.
    Thanks

  • Memory problems with PreparedStatements

    Driver: 9.0.1 JDBC Thin
I am having memory problems using "PreparedStatement" via jdbc.
After profiling our application, we found that a large number oracle.jdbc.ttc7.TTCItem objects were being created, but not released, even though we were "closing" the ResultSets of a prepared statements.
Tracing through the application, it appears that most of these TTCItem objects are created when the statement is executed (not when prepared), therefore I would have assumed that they would be released when the ResultSet is close, but this does not seem to be the case.
We tend to have a large number of PreparedStatement objects in use (over 100, most with closed ResultSets) and find that our application is using huge amounts of memory when compared to using the same code, but closing the PreparedStatement at the same time as closing the ResultSet.
Has anyone else found similar problems? If so, does anyone have a work-around or know if this is something that Oracle is looking at fixing?
    Thanks

From your mail, it is not very clear:
    a) whether your session is an HTTPSession or an application defined
    session.
    b) What is meant by saying: JSP/Servlet is growing.
    However, some pointers:
    a) Are there any timeouts associated with session.
    b) Try to profile your code to see what is causing the memory leak.
    c) Are there references to stale data in your application code.

    hi,

    4.5.1 on Sun Solaris
In our Customer Projects we are working with EJB's. for each customer
transaction we create a session to the weblogic application server.
now there are some urgent problems with the java process on the server.
for each session there were allocated 200 - 500 kb memory, within a day
the JSP process on our server is growing for each session and don't
reallocate the reserved memory for the old session. as a work around we
now restart the server every night.
How can we solve this problem ?? Is it a problem with the operating
system or the application server or the EJB's ?? Do you have problems
    like this before ?

  • Dual Channel memory problems on Neo 875P

I am having considerable trouble getting the NEO 875P to work with dual channel DDR400 DIMMs. I have two Kingston KVR400X64C25 DDR400 256MB memory modules, each of which works correctly by itself. However, once I move one
of the modules to channel B, I cannot boot my operating system (currently Windows XP.) The problem also occurs in Windows 2000, which I also have on the system. I receive blue screen errors that indicate paging/memory problems. I have upgraded my BIOS to the latest version (1.3)* in the hope that it would solve my problems, but it has not. The POST screen detects that there is 512MB of memory working in Dual Channel mode, but even when it does get through the O/S booting process (rarely), it crashes within minutes. Putting just one of the chips in makes the system perfectly stable. If anyone has any information, please let me know!
    Thanks,

    * My board was dead after trying to flash the 1.3 BIOS, but after about 10 attempts of using CTRL+HOME method to recover the BIOS, it finally worked with version 1.0. I then re-flashed with 1.3, and it rebooted fine. Are there any updates about all of the problems with v1.3 ?

    >I can only answer based on what I've read on this forum
I figured as much, I was just wondering if you knew whether MSI themselves frequents the forums or answers emails sufficiently.
I've had an interesting development though. I stumbled upon Tom's Hardware Guide's article about 875P motherboards at http://www17.tomshardware.com/motherboard/20030519/i875p-01.html
They mentioned that they needed to increase the memory voltage from 2.5 to 2.6 in the BIOS to get some memory modules to work. I did this, and for the first time, I am running in Dual channel DDR mode. However, the article also mentions that "the system does not run completely stably", so I guess I'll have to wait and see if it crashes again. However, I'm far enough beyond the XP splash screen to post this message, so I guess we're getting somewhere!
