IBook freezes - any ideas?

Hello,
I have some trouble with my iBook (G4, 14``inch, 1.33Ghz). I bought it in November 2004 and got additional memory (512MB) installed at the shop. It run fine until August 2004, when the ethernet port was no longer detected. As a case of guarantee the logic board was changed and everything seemed okay, but shortly after that the iBook started to freeze or crash now and then. After two total system crashes at the end of last year I took a closer look to the problem and found, that in the system profiler most times the built-in memory (256MB) was referred as "empty". Resetting of PRAM und PMU didn't change anything. Then I extracted the additional memory and surprisingly the iBook run fine again. I tried a new memory (again 512MB), but the iBook again started to freeze after a few minutes. My guess was that the memory slot was defect. A problem, which I can clearly live with. So I run the iBook for two days (only built-in memory) and everything was okay, but yesterday I made an intensive session (several installations and then some applications at the same time over 3-4h) and after a while the iBook slowed down and eventually froze. I wasn't able to restart until today (after about 6h, but of course I didn't try the whole night). Has anyboby an idea, what's could be wrong? Is it possible, that my iBook has a heating-problem? That's another possibility that occured to me yesterday.

Ronda, we're talking past each other!  I wasn't trying to use a cloned drive (MBP or iBook) in any of this!
What I had learned from experience (and from advice here and on the net) was that if you wanted to use an external drive with both an iBook and a MacBook Pro, you needed to format the drive as an Apple Partition Map.  And that is true.
Clearly wrongly, I assumed that if I did a fresh install of Tiger using an Apple Partittion Map, it could boot an iBook.  Clearly, an Intel-Mac installs something in that scenario that makes the drive only bootable from an Intel-Mac.  I had mistakenly thought it was the partition scheme the determined which laptop it could be booted from and used with!
For my future reference--and for any one else who might be in this situation--here's the solution.
1.  Format the external hard from the iBook.
2.  Then connect it to your MBP or other more recent device, and drag your home folder and needed programs over to the drive.
3.  Now, you can boot the external drive using your iBook.
4.  Any changes to documents, mail (e.g., Eudora), etc. will register on that external drive.
I wish I had thought of that, or been advised to do that.  It would have made short work of reconstructing the MBP's home folder contents on its return--a simple drag and drop operation!

My aspire 6920 crashes after booting correctly - screen zig zags and freezes - any ideas to help plse? This does not happen in safemode which I am working in now - I have seen a list of dowloadable drivers on the acer site but not at all sure if I should download any. If laptop is really on its way out I will have to let it go - but I would appreciate any advice to extent its life,  Thanks

Many thanks - relieved that it can be done but I am very unconfident that I can do this - is the display driver the display adapter in Vista? Not at all sure how to install new driver from Acer site - Could I use 'Drivers for free' download - I tried to set up an account with them after seeing their free download on CINET but not able to from 'safe mode' and laptop crashes when I try to do anything ( after about a minute ) in ordinary mode.  Any further advice welcome, thanks

  • HT1926 I've successfully updated itunes and quicktime on windows XP but itunes won't run properly, the video tutorial loses audio after about 1-2 minutes and when I plug in my iphone 4s to sync the whole thing freezes, any ideas?

    Hi everyone,
was prompted to upgrade itunes on my PC and also upgrade the software on my iphone 4s.Went through as usual but took 3 goes to get a successful upgrade of itunes on the PC. Then was prompted to update quick time, this was done successfully.
Thought I'd look at the tutorial video for itunes - the sound went off 11/2 minutes into it, then I couldn't stop it. I had a quick look around itunes and decided to sync my phone. The program recognised the phone then everything froze. Windows message for a non responding program came up and had to pull out of the program. So far after several hours I have not been able to get beyond stage 2 of 7 of syncing the phone; it keeps freezing up at different stages.
Any ideas?? I haven't had this kind of trouble before with any other version of itunes.
    Cheers

Still nothing? Wow... maybe the quality of this discussion board really has gone down. Dissappointed.

  • Bought snow leopard 10.6.3.( mac intel i3) having problems installing product. after 15mins computer freezes any ideas?, bought snow leopard 10.6.3.( mac intel i3) having problems installing product. after 15mins computer freezes any ideas?

Hi recently bought snow leopard 10.6.3. Having problems installing. My i Mac has intel i3 and system 10.6.8 . After about 15mins the computer restarts but freezes with apple logo. Any ideas? thanks alan

Yes, 10.6.8 update was specifically to ease the Lion installation (apart from some security updates).
Juat log onto the App Store (Icon would be in the Dock by default) and find the download. If you're not already registered with App Store, you'll need credit card info to hand, and your Apple ID (the one you use to log in here or the iTunes Store if you use it).
You would only need the retail SL disc if you were running 10.5.8 (Leopard) or earlier.

  • IMac randomly freezing - any ideas?

My computer started freezing out of the blue a couple days ago. Yesterday it happened 4-5 times in the morning and then didn't happen again until just now it froze once. I checked the system log and see this error ::
    Sep 15 13:36:45 localhost kernel[0]: AppleSMU -- shutdown cause = 3
Any idea what that means?? I tried unplugging all my stuff, removing third-party ram....but I have no idea what that error means.
    Thanks.

I just started getting lots of kernel panics in the last week. Took it to the Apple Store and they are replacing the logic board due to blown capacitors. I've had it for 2 years and it just went nutty on me. Take the back off your computer and look at the capacitors. If they are bulging or leaking, then take your iMac to have it repaired. There is a repair extension program for Rev A G5 iMacs....

  • My iPhone 5 camera keeps freezing if and when I take a photo I get either a pink screen or pink lines or lens freezes any ideas please

Has anyone else had an issue with their iPhone 5. Camera?
The problem is intermittent and presents as either a total freeze or partial or full pink screen
Is this a known fault and should I take the phone to an apple store for a replacement as it is only 4 months old

First thing to try is to reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously ignoring the red slider should one appear until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem.
If that didn't help, Make an appointment at an Apple Store to have your device examined by a technician. Or contact Apple Support.

  • My Mac is freezing-any ideas?

From time to time, my Mac will freeze without warning, I can still move the mouse and use Expose with the keyboard but none of the applications respond. This usually resolves itself after a minute or so but it's very annoying especially when it forces me to restart. I'm no expert, so I ran the disk utility from the installer cd, and did the disk repair. I got these messages:
    -Incorrect number of thread counts
    -Volume Bitmap needs minor repair
    -Invalid volume free block count
-The volume Macintosh HD could not be repaired.
Should I try using DiskWarrior (i don't have it) or just reinstalling Tiger?
    Thanks !

    Thanks !
Just one more question, if I decide to reformat, can I just copy my applications (stuff like Word that has limited installs from the CD) to my Ipod and copy it back afterwards? And to reformat, should I just install and erase?
    Thanks!

  • Whenever I try searching library everything freezes ~ any ideas would be welcome

When I imput a term into the library search box everthing stalls and I have to shut down & restart the computer and restart Firefox to get it working again

Current Firefox versions use SQLite version 3.7.1 and there have been issues reported with that SQLite version.
You may need to wait for the next update to get that problem fixed.
[https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=595530 Bug 595530] - Searching bookmarks and history is much slower after SQLite 3.7.x upgrade

  • I seem to have lost the iBooks icon from my iPad.  When being prompted to open a document it asks if I wish to open in iBooks and can see the "books" there.  Any ideas on how to restore the iBooks icon?

I seem to have lost the iBooks icon - any ideas?

You've checked all your homescreens and app folders for it, and tried searching for it via the iPad's spotlight search screen (swipe your first homescreen to the right) ? There is a maximum of 11 homescreens after which apps are only accessible via the spotlight search scree.
If not then have you tried a reset to see if you can find it after the iPad has restarted ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot. You could also do Settings > General > Reset > Reset Home Screen Layout which will re-arrange your apps and might make it easier to find.

  • My macbook freezes after last update.. any idea how to fix that?

I did last update on App store and now my macbook get slow and also freezes any idea how to fix it?

Try reconnecting with App Store to see if there is yet another update available, if yes, update your mac to the latest Apple is offering at the moment.
As for slow downs and freezes, try these steps:
    1.  Run Disk Utility and Repair Permissions then verify / repair disk if needed.
    2.  Next Follow these steps:
    Shut down your Mac.
Turn on the computer and immediately hold down Command (⌘), Option, P, and R keys simultaneously.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
    3.  If all else fails download and run "Onyx" for Mountain Lion.

  • IBook G4 freezes up when using external firewire drive.  Any ideas??

I have an external hard drive formatted as Apple Partition Map, with Tiger 10.4.11.  I can boot from that drive, but after a while... say, about a minute after it shows everything on the desktop, the iBook freezes.
If I start up from the iBook, I have no problem accessing the files and there are no freezes.  I'd like, however, to start up from the external drive during this week while my MacBook Pro is in the shop.  That way, documents, etc. will remain up to date, I can use various applications I'm used to, and won't have to go through the hassle of transferring settings for various programs to the iBook (or the programs themselves).
Any ideas what's going on here or how to fix it?

  • I'm trying to open a PDF from Safari with iBooks, but when I choose "Open with ..." in Safari, only Pages and Dropbox show as options.  I'm running iOS 7.1.2 and iBooks 3.2.  Thanks for any ideas!

On my iPad, I'm trying to open a PDF from Safari with iBooks, but when I choose "Open with ..." in Safari, only Pages and Dropbox show as options.  I'm running iOS 7.1.2 and iBooks 3.2.  I have rebooted the iPad and that did not help, and reinstalled iBooks, which also changed nothing.  Thanks for any ideas!

Yup, it was uploaded to our school Wiki as a PDF, and Pages did open it.  I was then able to move it to iBooks, but I'd rather avoid the extra steps.

  • My screensaver seems to be freezing and I can't access Safari. I've tried restarting/shutting down and that doesn't work. Any ideas to help?

My screensaver seems to be freezing and I can't access Safari. I've tried restarting/shutting down and that doesn't work. Any ideas to help?

Which OS X is installed on your Mac ?
Click the Apple () menu top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac. The version is noted there.
Troubleshooting advice can depend on that information.

  • Safari 5.1.7 on my MacBookPro OSX 10.7.4 freezes unexpectedly.  This issue just started.  Any ideas?

Safari 5.1.7 on my MacBook Pro OS X  10.7.4 freezes after a few minutes of loading.  Any ideas?

    Hi ..
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Empty Cache
If that didn''t help, back to the menu bar click Safari > Reset Safari. Select the top 5 boxes, click Reset.
If that didn't help, go to ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
For Lion v10.7x:  To find the Home folder in OS X Lion, open the Finder, hold the Option key, and choose Go > Library
Move the Cache.db file to the Trash. Quit then relaunch Safari to test.
If that didn't help, from the menu bar again, click Safari > Preferences then select the Privacy tab.
Click Details then click:  Remove All Website Data
If that didn't help, might be corrupted Safari preferences (.plist)
    Quit Safari.
    Go to ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Desktop.
Relaunch Safari. If that helped, move the .plist file to the Trash. If not, move it back to the Preferences folder.
Tip: Disabling the Lion "resume" feature will help to avoid caching issues in Safari.
    Open System Preferences > General
Deselect:  Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps
If nothing above has helped, go to Safari > Preferences > Extensions. If you have any installed, turn that OFF, quit then relaunch Safari to test.
And try troubleshooting Safari unsupported plugins.  From the menu bar click Safari > Preferences > Security
Deselect: Enable plug-ins. Quit then relaunch Safari. If that made a difference, follow the instructions here > Safari: Unsupported third-party add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
