IBook freezes on Apple logo white screen, NO spinning rainbow wheel

Hello,
I bought my iBook 12" 1.33Ghz used in May. It has worked flawlessly until two nights ago when I was surfing the web via Airport. Everything started to take forever to load, the spinning rainbow wheel appeared several times, and applications took minutes to switch between. Since the iBook had been on for a few days, I thought it was time to do a reboot to fix whatever was backlogged in the system. It didn't want to respond, so I force quitted all programs. I could click on the blue logo and hit shut down or restart, but they didn't do anything towards a shut down. I finally held the power button to force a shut down. Ever since, when I power up, I get the Apple chime, a gray screen (for less than a second) and then the white screen with the gray Apple logo. There is NO spinning rainbow wheel, as others with similar sounding problems have mentioned. I've cleared the PRAM and PMU, but they didn't help anything. Holding Shift on startup does not do anything differently. It still just freezes on the Apple logo for hours. I did not get a Mac OS X startup disk with my computer. What else can I do to troubleshoot this? Please help, this is my first Mac, and up until 3 days ago, I had all but sworn off PC's, now this thing is acting up too!
Also, I'm guessing which version of Mac OS X I have, is there anyway to confirm without booting? Holding option is the only thing I have found to give me a different startup process, and the mouse pad is very sluggish and there's a watch logo for 20 seconds or so on it.

Hello! Since you don't have the startup disk your best shot is using fsck. Tom
when you re-start, hold down the apple key AND the "S" key You'll start up into a command line interface.. it'll look strange but just hang in there. When it's done booting up, you should see something that looks like this: localhost:/ root# at this point, type in 'fsck -f" please note the space before the dash, and of course, ignore the quote marks, then hit return You computer will no go thru some low level checks on your HD. Most likely you'll get a list of a few files that have problems and this procedure will fix them. This should take about 2 or 3 mins, so don't be in a rush. When the line says "VOLUME WAS MODIFIED", this means that changes were made. At this point you should be back at the same localhost:/ root# prompt. run fsck -f again. Wait for it to finish. if you continue to get the "Volume was modified" message, continue to run fsck -f until you'll get a prompt that says The Volume(your HD) appears to be ok, again with the localhost:/ root# prompt. AT this point, type reboot, hit enter and your computer will start up normally. This is not difficult, but you may want to give it a shot when your feel you have a few moments where you can attempt something new and not stress too much.

I had to reboot my iMac, it froze... When I went to reboot it started up as usual... Made power sound, showed apple logo (white screen)... And pin wheel started after 3 to 4 mins., went to black screen with error messages. Rebooted 5x, shot off power source, disconnected external devices... Now won't go past pinwheel... Since it does not go to black screen, I cannot convey error messages... Please advise what I could try... Thank you... I have an iMac 2009... Upgrade operating system to new system this spring... Don.

It is guitardad's again... I read past topics on this issue... As I am not overly computer savvy, I want to be careful that I don't mess things up further... Of course the extended warranty is done... There is talk about booting from the system disc...  I'm not sure if this is the first thing to do or not... Can the support community, advise me on what logical steps I should take ( in order) or direct me to a website and/ or you tube video that walks one safely through the processes... Once again thank you for reading and offering your advice... I am on fixed $$$ so I'm trying to avoid calling apple, unless I have no options and/or the suggestions do not resolve the issues... Tx again Don.

  • Ipod Touch - Black, apple logo, white screen, black REPEATEDLY!

My ipod touch, 2nd or 3rd generation, keeps flashing from black, to apple logo, to white screen and back to black. Then about every 10th cycle or so it flashes the low battery screen and then shuts off. Only to begin its cycle again in a few minutes. Obviously the battery is so low it can't boot right away. But it won't wait to try to turn on long enough to charge the battery. I've tried resetting, and it won't show up in iTunes to restore...HELP! I WILL NOT give up on this iPod!

    lllaass Thanks for the reply.
I was aware of the nature of the error. The USB issue would not appear to be relevant as my own iTouch 2G is fine using the same PC / cable. However I will, when I have time, install iTunes on another PC and attempt from there. My question asked if the OP had resolved the issue and if it had been resolved then how was it acheived.
The Grandson's iTouch is now permanently stuck in the mode it first appears in when new i.e. image displayed of the iTunes symbol and a USB cable, indicating that it needs to communicate with iTunes.

  • I'm having problems starting up... Apple logo gray screen and the thinking wheel.

Help!! please.. I like making YouTube videos... And I need this to work.

    Hello Dana,
Please report back what does & doesn't work...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
Does it boot into any of these modes?

Does it boot to Single User Mode, CMD+s keys at bootup, if so try...

  • Hi all- got an iMac 2006 iSight 24". Problem -- not starting up, gets to apple logo grey screen and spinning wheel. It had a new 1tb sea gate 7200 HD. Now I'm starting up and it won't boot, and won't disc boot Says  'restart'. Hardware test ok...?..

Yes as described problem. I think the new drive maynot have been formatted before attempted OS install. But I am unable to get the iMac to boot form CD. When CD is out I just get blinking question mark. When boot from cd I get please restart. D option gives info and hardware test which is ok.  Any ideas at all would really help. Many thanks.

I went to Genius Bar- they were unable  to boot the iMac into an OS.
They didn't do anything more?  They just returned a broken iMac right back to you w/o telling you anything more?  If this is the case, I would take the comp to another AS or an AASP for a second opinion.

  • I wanted to restore my ipod touch 4G, but everytime it is restoring with the apple logo, the screen goes partially white and my itunes says "error 9"... what should i do?

I wanted to restore my ipod touch 4G, but everytime it is restoring with the apple logo, the screen goes partially white and my itunes says "error 9"... what should i do?
    plz answer me~

    Error 9
This error occurs when the device unexpectedly loses its USB connection with iTunes. This can occur if the device is manually disconnected during the restore process. This issue can be resolved by performing USB troubleshooting, using a different USB dock-connector cable, trying another USB port, restoring on another computer, or by eliminating conflicts from third-party security software.

  • Ipod Classic 80gb Freezes on Apple Logo

I have an Ipod classic 80gb. When I plug my Ipod into my computer the Ipod freezes on the Apple logo on screen. The only way to get it back is to go into disk mode and then restore the ipod on itunes but it doesn't fix it permanently. As soon as I plug it back in or it resets it does the same thing. If i leave it unplugged for a while then it will come back on like a reset ipod asking to select language and it is then a factory reset ipod with nothing on it. When I plug it back in so i can upload songs it does the same thing again. Please help

The clicking sound is your iPod Hardisk, trying to retract and find the boot sector unsuccesfully.
Hopefully, you can do the iPod Disk Diagnostic as in this great post by tt2., it wont fix your problem, but let you know, how dire is your Hardisk health.
So only as a last resort, one way, to get the stuck Hardisk head free, is to bang the iPod on a rubber mouse pad, when you reset it, but do it at your own risk, some very lucky guys got it working again for the next 14 months, like myself.

  • IMac 10.5.8 is stuck on Apple logo loading screen , how can I back up my files with an external hard drive ?

so my iMac (10.5.8 its pretty old ) got stuck on the apple logo loading screen (as I call it lol) and it will not go beyond that .I've already made and appointment for the genius bar but now would I back up my files with an external hard drive ? No unfortunately I don't have any other laptop or computer just the external hard drive. how would I back it up? Does it have something to do with "target disc mode"?

    Hi,
Thank you for great advice re SuperDuper.
You wasnt to know we didnt live in  USA.  We will try to get the full retail version of Leopard off the net.  We will also phone round the apple resellers.
In the meantime, we are happy running Tiger with the knowledge that SuperDuper has cloned our hard drive in case of a disaster.
SuperDuper recommended backing up the hard drive with a new user account if we were using filevault on the master account.  We backed up our hard drive without creating a new user with filevault as we could not read the pdf `Instuctions as preview was not responding.
Is this copy safe to use as a bootable drive or should we copy our entire HD again using a new user account without filevault?

If running 10.7 or later hold down Command-R at Startup.
    This should invoke recovery Mode.
    Choose Disk Utility.
Select your Hard drive. Inspect the SMART Status in the lower right of the window for "Verified".
Select the Mac OS X Volume (originally Macintosh HD) click (Repair Disk)
If errors, run again until it comes clean or gets stuck.
    Report any error messages.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
