IBook frozen in sleep

Last night I put my iBook to sleep and now it won't seem to wake up. The little snoring light thing is maybe half-lit, but it doesn't snore like normal--just one solid, half-way lit light. I've tried force shuttng down (holding down the power button) and force restarting (command-control-power), and neither work. I've also tried the obvious--closing lid (it was open), unplugging it (the battery still has life though).
Anything else I can do?

Try holding down the power button for 10 seconds.

  • IBook will not sleep with clamshell open -

I have been using this iBook for years with no problems until the system updater updated to 10.4.9 on 4/24/07. Ever since then the iBook will not sleep on its own, I have to shut the clamshell or use the sleep command from the Apple menu.
I have tried disabling all sharing (file printer internet).
I have reset the PMU multiple times.
I have tried several different settings in the energy saver panel.
I have used "sudo periodic daily weekly monthly."
I have verified and repaired permissions.
Here is my console log from today:

Looking back several days seems the "lookupd" hangs up quite often and the Sound assertion always fails.
Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Does this happen when running from the AC adapter or from the battery, or does that not matter?
Try booting into Safe Mode. This will take quite awhile longer than a normal startup because it does a file check and repair of the hard disk.
You will see your normal desktop. Once completely started up in Safe Mode, restart normally, and go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Select the named boot volume in the left sidebar, ("Macintosh HD" unless you've renamed it). Repair permissions on it.
Recheck the settings in Energy Saver in System Preferences.
See if a little hard drive maintenance helps.

  • IBook will not sleep when lid closed

    Hi,
I recently had my Hard Drive replaced, the old one died. It was all covered by AppleCare and the repairs done at a Apple Authorised Outlet. After installing everything again I just found out that my iBook will not sleep when the lid is closed. The screen is still on and bright. Any ideas why? Is this dangerous? Any quick fixes?
    Cheers,
    Jack

    Jack,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You need to give the Apple Authorized Repair center a call back and let them know what's going on. I've seen this before here on the forums, and it was attributed to a sleep magnet not being put back in. It's most likely this. Apparently, putting this magnet back in can be easily overlooked.

  • Clicking Hdd when my ibook is on sleep mode

I have a problem with my ibook.
When it goes in sleep option from time to time, I can hear the HDD drive heads clicking, like when you start it,every 5 minutes.
What is it? Is my hdd going to die soon??
    Cheers
    Luca

    Sorry for the late reply
    Here is what happens:
Scenario 1: battery in, I choose sleep from the apple menu. The poor thing goes to sleep and stay with its black monitor but, from time to time the hdd makes noise like when the ibook it’s starting, a sort of buzz it goes on like this every 5 min. If I choose from the System Options to never put the hdd at sleep it doesn’t make noise.
Scenario 2: no battery, AC adapter in. I choose sleep and ibook goes to sleep, after 5 min it turns the display on and stays like that for good.
    What’s going on??

  • IBook g4 only sleeps on battery power. Other than putting never sleep in the energy saver what else can be done?

iBook g4 only sleeps on battery power. Other than putting never sleep in the energy saver what else can be done?

Do you mean it will only go to sleep when running from the battery? Or do you mean it won't do anything except sleep when running from the battery?
You could try resetting the PMU. The PMU has control over the Sleep function, so resetting it may help.

  • Ibook freeze from sleep

In trying to wake from sleep on my ibook, my screen freezes. I can move the pointer but it won't click on anything on the desktop, the menu or the dock. I tried re-closing the lid for a minute -- sometimes it helps, sometimes not. If not, the screen goes dark, and I have to re-start. Sometimes it fully restarts, sometimes it hangs before the restart is complete.
After the last freeze, my console showed about 50 copies of the following line:
ibook kernel[0]: IOHIDSystem: postEvent LLEventQueue overflow.
(The graphics card was replaced under the recall a couple of months ago.)
Anyone have any suggestions on how to deal with it?

That didn't work, but I tried re-setting the Power Management Unit, and it seems somewhat better so far.
It still sometimes doesn't find the Airport (the icon in the menu bar is grayed out) on waking from sleep, but I think I can fix that by putting it to sleep again, closing the lid, waiting 30 seconds, then opening the lid again.
    Thanks for your help.

  • IBook won't sleep when cover is closed

When I close the cover it will not sleep. Only after a time it will sleep per settings in the energy saver. When I open the cover, it will not automatically awaken. Have to hit apple key a few times to awaken? Not the end of the world but would like to know why.

The reed switch is the likely culprit. It's in the right side of the display bezel, and is activated by a magnet in the right lower edge of the iBook. Unless you are rolling in dough, it's likely not to be worth the cost of repair. Probably money would be better spent toward a new MacBook if you can't tolerate the situation as it now exists.
Sometimes the reed switch sticks in the off position. At least, you can consider yourself lucky that the one in your iBook has stuck in the on position, so it's on all the time instead of off.
You can set the Energy Saver preferences to have it sleep quickly or simply remember to put it to sleep manually before closing the iBook if you decide to live with it, as-is.

  • IBook G4 / 800 - Sleep = Off ??

I had to replace the hard drive in my iBook. After reinstalling Tiger, the machine has developed an issue where it does not sleep correctly - instead it completely powers off.
Whether I choose "Sleep" or close the lid, the machine appears to go to sleep, the white LED comes on for a short time (under 1/2 a second), and then immediately goes out. If it matters, the LED doesn't fade out, it just shuts off.
At this point, pressing any key (as you would if the machine were sleeping), does not do anything.
If I press the power button momentarily, the machine bongs and starts up normally. This is opposed to having to hold the power button due to a kernel panic.
Any ideas on what could be causing this?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
Resetting the PMU may resolve it. Do that by simultaneously pressing and then releasing Shift-Control-Option-Power on the keyboard. Wait 5 seconds and start the iBook.

  • IBook wakes from sleep if touched or moved

    Hi all,
This just started happening recently. If I touch the top of my (closed) sleeping iBook, or move it, the computer wakes from sleep for a second and then goes back to sleep. It will sometimes do this several times in succession. It's as if it's suddenly become super sensitive.
Any idea what could be causing this? Is there a fix?
    Thanks

As a further update, I've turned on the console and this is the type of activity that's registering between "wake-ups". Anyone have any idea what it means?
    Here's a sampling:
Jan 8 20:53:37 mycomputer-2 mDNSResponder: Repeated transitions for interface lo0 (XXX.0.0.1); delaying packets by 5 seconds
Jan 8 20:53:48 mycomputer-2 mDNSResponder: Repeated transitions for interface lo0 (XXX.0.0.1); delaying packets by 5 seconds
Jan 8 20:54:05 mycomputer-2 mDNSResponder: Repeated transitions for interface lo0 (XXX.0.0.1); delaying packets by 5 seconds
Jan 8 20:58:05 mycomputer-2 mDNSResponder: Repeated transitions for interface lo0 (XXX.0.0.1); delaying packets by 5 seconds
Of course, this may or may not be related to the sleep/wake problem.....

  • IPod USB charging when iBook/Powerbook is sleeping

    Hello all.
We've got two iPods (a 5G and a 4G) and two portable Macs (PowerBook and iBook).
Here's the issue: when our computers are sleeping (ie. the lids are closed), but also plugged into the wall, we could charge our old 4G iPods using the FireWire cables.
Now that one of us has upgraded to a 5G (which doesn't sync through FireWire), and the other has switched to using the USB cable to sync/charge, we've noticed that the iPods don't charge through USB when the computers are asleep but plugged in.
Is this the experience that other iPod/Mac users are having? Is there a way to force the iPods to charge when the computers are sleeping AND powered, or do iBooks and Powerbooks need to be awake to charge an iPod through USB?
I understand why a sleeping iBook or Powerbook that's NOT plugged in wouldn't charge an iPod -- it doesn't with FireWire, after all. But a computer that IS plugged in? How inconvenient if I had to open my computer every time I'm trying to charge up the iPod!
    Please advise. Thanks.

Powering a device through the USB bus requires that the CPU on the host machine be active in order to arbitrate power for different devices and warn the operator if a device is drawing too much power from the bus. Since the CPU doesn't do anything while the computer is asleep, devices cannot be powered while the host is asleep. Power used by FireWire devices is drawn directly from the power supply and doesn't need any information from the CPU while the computer is plugged in. When on battery power, FireWire ports are shut off while the computer is asleep to save battery time.

  • Ibook cycles from sleep to wake (only when closed and charging)

I have been having an issue with my 12' iBook g4 for about 6 months or so. It will operate just fine on battery power, but when I plug it in it will start to act up. The screen will flicker as it charges for a few seconds, then it stops charging. Then it starts, stops, starts, stops. I have found that it happens when the battery is lower (under 20%) and if I turn the backlight down or off that it will charge for a few seconds longer each cycle.
In addition to this if I close the computer when it is charging it will not sleep, just cycle back and forth. The only fix I have found it to leave the lid open and put it to sleep from the apple menu. As long as it is open it charges fine.
I now have a new macbook, but I wanted to sell this one and would rather not have this problem. Any ideas?

Have you tried resetting the PMU?
Also for the problem with it not sleeping properly while closed, if you are still seeing this behavior after resetting the PMU, try removing the keyboard and replacing it again. Sometimes this happens if the keyboard is not properly seated.

  • IBook won't sleep when lid closed

    Hi -
My iBook refuses to go to sleep when the lid is closed. It will sleep if I put it to sleep from the Apple menu, but never just from being closed. (And sometimes when I put it to sleep and then close the lid, it keeps waking up and making crunching noises.) I've tried everything I can think of to fix the problem, including: resetting the PMU, deleting a bunch of background programs, and reinstalling the OS. It's been doing this for about 6 months, and it's driving me crazy. Any ideas? Please help!

    Hi skywriter,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
Has the iBook's case ever been opened? There's a magnet on the bottom side of the top case that activates the sleep switch. Hold a small magnet on the right side of the screen and see if it will sleep. If it does, the magnet isn't where it's supposed to be and will need to be replaced.

  • IBook Won't Sleep When Power Cord Is On/Charging

    Hi!
I have a problem putting my iBook to sleep. I can't put it to "normal" sleep manually or by closing the lid. It wakes up after a few seconds and then go to sleep again and then wakes up again, etc. It does this over and over again. However, I noticed that when I remove the power cord from my iBook, it goes to normal sleep but when I insert it back again, the problem recurrs. What could be wrong?
Also, I'm not sure this is related but I also noticed that the key "n" is not responding normally. I have to press it harder so that I can make it appear on the screen when i type and sometimes it types a lot of "n's" even when I'm not pressing it or pressed it only once, e.g. onnnnnnnce (I only pressed "n" once).
I am really confused...please help! Thanks in advance!

    Hi Jo-Ann,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Go to System Preferences > Power Adapter (from popup menu next to Settings For:; are the slides on never? You might want to try resetting the PMU (Knowledge Base Document #14449, which covers Resetting Powerbook and iBook Power Management Unit (PMU)).
I believe you key may be stuck. You should bring it to your local Apple Store/Reseller and have them take a look at it. If you are still having a sleep problem; they can look at that too

  • IBook will not sleep

Since upgrading to Tiger, now when I close my iBook lid, the computer will not sleep. The only way I can get it to sleep is to unplug all peripheral devices (including my power cord) and select sleep. It used to sleep automatically on closing. I've tried adjusting my energy saver choices in System Prefs, unclicking receive faxes in System Prefs, and all other funky suggestions I found online but to no avail-it will still not sleep when I close the lid. Does anyone have more suggestions? I travel a lot and like to store my computer in sleep mode in my computer case, but now it runs instead and wears my battery down!

    Hello,
Unfortunately, I think your problem is hardware related. From your logic board, running through the right hinge of your display, there is a cable that is connected to your display inverter board, and a device in the display, called a reed switch. This cable contains several wires (6). The reed switch is a device that, when nearby a magnet sets the computer to sleep. The magnet is positioned underneath the keyboard so that when the lid is closed, the computer is set to sleep. If a wire is broken (most likely in the hinge), you may have one of several problems. For example, your sleep function will not work. Or, as in my case, the backlight does not work, so the display goes dark. Only time will tell which cable will break first, so in your case it was the one to the reed switch.
What you need is a 076-1073 PCEBA Reed Switch with Cable for
dual USB white iBook. It is an original Apple part and can be purchased from http://www.smalldog.com for $20. However, replacing the cable is somewhat tricky, but not impossible. I did it without previous laptop surgery.
There is also another discussion thread on the backlight issue. It has some good links.
This is what I think is the problem.
    Good luck

  • Search mode for ibooks frozen

I was searching in the store for ibooks and it froze up on me. Now I can't do anything.

Update: I turned the ipad completely off and left it off for 10 minutes. Then I turned it back on and the library comes back up. So it looks like my screen is no longer frozen in ibooks. Yay! Patience is the key.
