IBook G3 366mhz graphite WON'T BOOT!!!!

I Could Really Use Some HELP with my iBook! I use my iBook for school so I really need to fix it as soon as possible. I was sitting on my iBook and had just finished saving my English Essay and I was going to shut down but I thought I would check to see if there was any updates available for my iBook which there was, so I updated it then stated that I needed to restart so I did, but when it tryed to restart its self after its update. but it wouldn't/couldn't boot past a grey screen with a apple in the middle of the screen and and circle wheeel like loading bar just underneath the apple.

IBook on 10.4 won't boot from Install Disk

Hi - Somewhere along the line I lost DiskUtility from my iBook running 10.4.11. I thought I could run it from the Install Disc but I find the iBook won't boot from the Disc and DU won't run from the Disc (when I do manage to track it down there).
I have install discs from a G4 Powerbook and a MacBookPro Unibody but I'm concerned about repairing permissions from the wrong version of DU (even if I could get the iBook to boot from those discs). Is a newer disc OK? I want to run or install DiskUtility. What are my options??
How can I get the iBook to boot from its install disc?

The installers are machine-series specific. And the Intel disc won't work
in the PPC Mac, additionally. If you have the correct disc for that iBook,
then you can boot the computer with the disc inside the optical drive
and hold the C key down, until Installer appears on the screen; a second
screen after the initial language screen has a full menu bar and Installer
in the header; options appear in the drop-down menu lists, Disk Utility is
among utility and other features listed in there.
If you do not have an iBook G4 disc or an OS X disc retail version capable
of doing the job, you really should get the correct disc. In a few instances,
another path may work, but is not recommended. And you could lose the
content of the hard drive in the computer you are hoping to save.
However, you may be able to use Pacifist to get Disk Utility from the PB G4
installer disc to be made available on the desktop of the iBook, and use
Pacifist to install that extracted package item from the other PPC install disc.
This does not use the installers on the disc media, so Pacifist is used to do
the process. The iBook ideally needs a replacement disc set, and that may
be available from Apple online store's sales support (see online phone#)
and the product would be matched by serial number. A fee is involved.
The original software disc set would have the correct Apple Hardware Test
and the software kit as included when the computer was new.
If Tiger did not ship with the computer in question, then a full retail disc 10.4
installer could probably be used; since it would be newer than, say 10.3.9.
In natural progression, the newer disc of correct kind & type supported by
the computer is a possible path; however a Leopard disc won't help fix Tiger.
You could also use Disk Utility in one PPC Mac, via FireWire Target Disk
mode, to repair the drive of the iBook. It would only appear as a hard drive.
So, repairing disk permissions would not be possible, on a non-boot volume.
This, only within limits; differences in build versions of OS and custom installs
done to a computer configuration may make doing so very limited. I would
not expect an Intel-Mac's version of the same OS to help a PPC in any way.

IBook G3 won't boot hard drive

Hello guys.
Recently I got a whole slew of iBook G3s, broken and new, which I will eventually fix and sell (probably keep one) but I am still in the process of fixing them and have a few questions.
I have this hard drive that I'm almost certain works (I can install tiger on it without it crashing) but it refuses to boot to tiger. I know it's not the iBook itself because I have a different hard drive that boots great, even in other iBooks too. I'm figuring the mbr config is jacked up, and ive already tried option apple pr and reset nv ram, reset defaults, and so forth in the firmware. How do I make this darn thing boot? And yes, I have tried to boot directly from the cd, but when it restarts it just sits there with the two faced mac face and the blinking question mark. I bet I'm going to have to do some magic in the OF, but I don't know what to type, so yeah...

Are you saying it did boot off the CD and install, but now it won't boot off the CD?
By the way, Tiger normally comes on a DVD. There are a few copies on CD out there, but they are relatively rare. Is your copy of Tiger on CD or DVD? Have you used a retail copy of Tiger for the installation? If you used an Tiger install disc from another Mac, that may not work on the iBook.

366MHz Graphite iBook (w/ FireWire)... Does it exist?

I've noticed an auction on eBay where the seller listed a 366MHz Graphite Clamshell... with a FireWire port. I, personally, have never heard of this model and, ironically, the one picture that is missing from the auction is a side-shot of the ports to verify the FireWire port's existence. I have the suspicion that the seller may have mis-listed a 366MHz first-generation iBook SE or a 466MHz second-generation SE, but they claim that they are an apple-certified technician and those are the specs, although the unit is in storage so they can't verify them.
So then, my question: Has Apple ever produced the standard second-generation (366MHz, FireWire) iBook in the graphite color?

Ibook won't boot up on own or from OS installation CD (need help in Yemen)

I'm currently in Yemen for a few months and my ibook seems to have died on me. The country isn't exactly brimming with Apple support technicians so any advice or suggestions people could give me would be really appreciated.
I have an older ibook (dual USB G3 which I bought in June 2001). It has the occasional application or OS freezes, but typically restarting solves these. Yesterday, however, when I tried restarting the computer wouldn't boot up - it would get to the gray start up screen with the apple and spinning wheel and would just sit there with no progress even after an hour. I removed the airport card and extra RAM, but no luck.
I ran the Apple Hardware Check CD, but everything came up clean. I also ran Norton Utilities Disk Warrier and it found Major Errors in some of the directories (I have the list at home if that would help) all of which it said it fixed. However, it wasn't able to complete checking the HD, at one point it tried to find some files and never was able to get any further in the check - it would just sit for hours with no progress. When I tried rebooting the computer on its own it got no further than a gray screen.
At this point I decided it might be easiest just to reinstall the opperating system. I put in the installation disks (OS 10.2.4) and tried booting up from the CD - the boot up was very slow and ultimately (maybe after 10 minutes) instead of a gray screen with an Apple logo it came up with the "forbidden symbol" (i.e. the circle with the slash through it that you see on no smoking signs).
At this point I'm not quite sure what to since it isn't booting up from the installation CD - are there any other tricks I could try or reason why it won't boot up from the CD? I also have a copy of 10.4 installation CD but I'm hesitant to install it just because the ibook is such an old computer and it would require the extra RAM to run it (currently I have 300 something of RAM in the computer). I also have a 20 GB external harddrive with me if there's anyway I could boot up with it.
Three years ago the laptop had major problems and basically died, but went into Apple and seemed to have been fixed and had the logic board replaced. After this point I got a new laptop (which I'm hiting myself for not bringing with me at this point) and haven't really used this computer frequently - maybe 5 to 10 times in the last 3 years, it really is a "spare" laptop. I used it for about a week before coming and it seemed to be working fine.
At this point I'm really open to any suggestions on how to fix and jury rig it to work for the next 3 months (really I just need to be able to use Word and iPhoto) or so as I won't be using it once I get back to the States. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciate. Thank you very much!!

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Which utility did you use on the iBook? Was it Norton DiskDoctor or Alsoft's DiskWarrior? They are two entirely different things.
Norton DiskDoctor was developed for OS 9. It doesn't recognize OS X as a legitimate operating system, identifies OS X as "errors" on your drive, and sets about "fixing" those errors, really messing things up in the process. (It does this even if you run it in OS 9 on a drive that has OS X on it.)
Apple calls the sign you are seeing when trying to boot from the CD a "prohibitory sign."

IBook won't boot up after a rest..

I hava the most weird problem with my iBook..
As I have it running, it works just fine.
I can boot it up, install software and do all sorts of things with it but when I turn it off and let it stay like that for like couple of hours, it won't boot up no more.
With the OS disk I can revive it, just now it took 5 tries, but it started and now as I shut it down and turn it on again there is no problem. But yet again, if I let it stand there for a hour or two, we are back in with the same problem, it won't finf the boot disk and needs to be revived with the OS intallation disk.
I reinstalled the whole (clean install) system today, had everything set up and installed all my software and such and there was no problem during the whole day, but now I had it turned off for few hours, it's just the same..
What might be the problem??

Now there is a new HD and it works better than this iBook has ever done.

So, problem solved, not in a conventional way but solved.
Well, actually, pretty conventional. The average life of an internal HDD in a laptop is approximately 3 to 5 years, and even if they survive beyond that they can fail suddenly or else continue with progressively degraded performance until they expire. The new HDDs have larger capacities and faster rotational speeds, both of which significantly boost performance.

Mac ibook (powerbook4,3 4.3) won't boot tiger os x

I booted into Open Firmware on an ibook which previously had os x 10.4.11 installed on it. I did something to change the boot parameter by choosing to boot into os 9.2.1 but now os x won't boot. I then reformatted the drive with an os 9.2.1 installation cd disk utility.
When I boot into Open Firmware the first and second line read:

I'm wondering why since I have purchased a retail copy of OS X Tiger 10.4 that I can't boot from the Tiger installation media.
Can anyone help me recover my iBook? I purchased the iBook second-hand with OS X preinstalled.

Now that may not work either.
The Powerbook 4,3 iBooks were anytime between May 20, 2002 and October 22, 2003.
Inside the battery bay it should tell you if there is a CD, DVD, or Combo drive (supports DVD), or superdrive (DVD burner). It should also tell you the serial number, which is your key to knowing which retail installer will work. The serial numbers are written with a prefix of 5 characters, the last 3 tell you the date of manufacture,
and what was able to run on it.    So any xx243xxxxx where x can be any letter or number would be the 43rd week of 2002.   Any xx307xxxxx would be the 7th week of 2003.
During that time frame:
August 24, 2002 10.2 was released (26th week).
After this point only the 10.2.3 retail installer will work or later retail installer, or the prebundled discs.
December 19, 2002 10.2.3 retail was released (51st week).
After this point only the 10.3 retail installer or later retail installer would work, or prebundled discs.
10.3 retail installers were all CDs.
10.4 retail installers were mostly DVDs, though a limited version was available with CDs known as the Media Exchange discs.
Prebundled discs included Appleworks and hardware test and portions of iLife not included with the operating system.
You can't use the installer disc that came with another Mac of the same vintage but different model, or different model but same vintage.   You can't use OEM or upgrade discs, except where the upgrade disc was available within the 3 weeks of the operating system release and if the Mac was shipped during that tight time frame.

IBook G4 Won't Boot - 'Disk Utility' sees no drive?

Over the past week, I've started to see my old iBook G4 (Late 2004 Model) acting odd. It started with a sort of generic "Mac OS X has encountered an error and must restart" type of message.
Now it won't boot. It gets to the Apple logo screen with the progress indicator, but never gets past that.
I put the Tiger disc in and rebooted, while holding down "C" -- and once I boot from the DVD, I'm getting varied results.
The first time it booted, it showed the HDD fine, but when I verified the disk, it mentioned that the disk needed to be fixed.
So I clicked "Repair Disk" and it went through a lot of HDD noises and such, then shut down.
When I restarted it, I can no longer see the HDD when I boot from the DVD. Yikes!
Any other steps I can take?

Sorry to say this but it sound like hard drive failure. You could get DiskWarrior http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/index.html It can repair the directory, but it can't repair hard drive failure itself.
Another suggestion is to take it in to a nearby Apple Store or Apple reseller:

IBook won't boot from CD

I bought this iBook, used, with Tiger on it. A while back, it had Debian Lenny installed onto it. Now I can't reinstall Tiger...
I have tried holding "C" before the gray screen when it boots, and I've tried holding "option". It only shows the disk with the Linux penguin, but not my Tiger install CD. Holding C, it only loops trying to read the CD; it does NOT reboot, it just unsuccessfully continues attempting to read the disk.
I know it not be a problem with my CD, because I can't reinstall Debian or Kubuntu or Ubuntu, even from the disk used in the past. I have tried resetting the PRAM and PMU..
Is there any hope?? I'm done with using Linux.

Yes, the iMac will still boot from the CD. The iBook won't boot from any disk anymore, not even retail Panther. I know that the CD drive still works, because I'm using it right now to listen to music in Debian.. I think something's up with the open firmware, and I should update it but that can only be done through Classic right? There's not even an update for my iBook, I think.
I've tried burning several different linix distros, and they all work with my iMac but not iBook.
And, yes, it is a set of four CDs for Tiger.

IBook G4 suddenly won't boot past the "booting OSX" screen.

My iBook G4 suddenly died and now won't boot past the "Starting OSX" screen. The blue bar goes all the way across but never moves to the next screen. I have my original disks, containing OS 10.4.5. I am trying to boot from the disk, but just keep getting the Installer program. When I try to choose a startup disk, it still won't start. Any help or ideas? This is urgent.
BTW, I am a photographer and was workig in PhotoShop7 -- a program I use all day, every day.

Start from the install disc again and choose Disk Utility from the menu. Highlight the drive on the left and click Repair Disk. If it reports errors and repairs made, repeat the process until no errors are reported.

Ibook g4 won't boot, but hard drive seems fine

I have a ibook g4,800mhz. osx 10.4.8
On start up i get the folder & question mark. I have tried the following.
1) i booted with an os install disk. disk utilities reported the drive was ok it but couldn't see a disk partition so disk first aid had nothing to do.
2) next i ran disk warrior which had the same probably, it could see the hard drive, reported that the drive was functioning, but saw no partition.
3) finally i gave up and reformatted the disk, and re installed an os. this worked for 48 hours at which time the problem came back.
4) i can put the laptop in firewire mode connect it to a desktop and access the hard drive. I can format the disk using apple disk tools, i can install an new os, but after all this it still won't boot from the internal hd.
5) I reset the pram. also tried starting up with the option key down .. no hard drive is visible when i do this.
So the hard drive seems to work ok. Two different disk utilities see the hard drive and think its functioning ok. OSx installer runs without complaint, but the &$%! won't boot from the hd.
Anybody got any suggestions?

This is the time period that I was commenting on. If something was used during that time that corrupted the OS, it would cause the situation you are in.
If everything is perfect with the OS then something is wrong with the hard drive or the motherboard's interface to the hard drive.

Tangerine iBook won't boot

My cousin has a Tangerine iBook, and she noticed today that it won't boot. She says the power indicator light ring around the power port isn't lighting up anymore, so I am guessing fried motherboard or the power adapter has gone bad. Does this make sense or are there other things I should be looking for? Thanks!

Try a different power adapter. Maybe one of your friends has a clamshell or a black G3 PowerBook.
It is a known issue that the cable connection between the yoyo power adapter near the plug breaks easily after some years of use - so don't give up too soon.
Next thing would be the DC-in board.

When the plug goes in and out a thousand times it looses its contact and needs to be resoldered.
Sometimes the DC-in board is fried and the logicboard is still working.

IBook G3 flashing question mark/won't boot from disc

I recently bought a used iBook, and I knew that the hard drive was bad. No big deal, just replace the HD and reinstall OS X, right? Not quite. I'm still getting the flashing question mark, and the CD won't boot. I reset the PRAM, etc. Still nothing. Held down alt/option at start up. It recognizes that the OS X disc is there, but still won't boot it. It just shows me a smiling computer with a spinning rainbow CD looking thing in the upper left corner. At this point I'm thinking it might be a failed optical drive, or the ribbon might not be seated properly (Entirely possible, since the retard that owned this before obviously took it apart at least once. Half of the screws are missing). Am I correct in this assumption, or is there something else I should be looking for?
Edit: I have 256MB of RAM, a combo drive, and am using a 10.1.3 disc.

Well, that iMac has a G3 processor and I see it's running OS X, so if you can get the iBook working, that is about what you can expect from it.
There was a later G4 processor (in iBooks and iMacs), and the end of the PowerPC iMacs had a G5 processor in them, but that processor ran too hot for a portable — a main consideration in Apple's decision to switch to Intel processors.
Surfing the web may be a trifle difficult with it, depending somewhat on the speed of your internet connection.
The MacBooks are a phenomenal improvement over the iBooks (even the iBook G4). There's no way around it — the Intel processors are just so much faster. I wince a bit when I hear someone say they're basing a future purchase decision on the performance of such an old model as this. It's simply not an accurate representation of what modern Macs are like.
Comparing Mac OS X 10.2.4 to Mac OS X 10.6.7 is a bit like comparing Windows 98 to Windows 7.

Ibook g4 won't boot from install disks

Got an ibook g4 1.33 ghz combo drive from original owner w/install disks. I want to reinstall original system but it won't boot from install disk 1. Tried starting holding down c but ignores disk. Holding down option just gives me the HD. Install disk shows up on desktop and opens. Tried disk utility from install disk but it doesn't allow me to erase the hd. Is there anything else I can do? Thanks.

OK, so let us suppose that you have the correct disk, the possibilities are:
• the optical drive is not functioning properly. However, since the disk shows up on the desktop the drive is apparently reading it.
• the disk itself is the issue. It could the wrong disk, but let us assume it is not. It could be damaged so that it is no longer bootable, or it could dirty. I would begin by giving the disk a good buffing and see if that will encourage it to boot the computer.

IBook G4 won't boot using Install Disk

My iBook g4 won't boot from its original Mac OS X Install Disk (10.4.2).
When I try to start by holding down the 'C' key, the drive starts to spin up the disk, but then starts up from the hard drive.
When using the System Preferences to select the install disk as the start up drive, it shows in the preference pane, I can select it, but when it restarts, I get a flashing question mark before the computer continues by booting up from the hard drive.
I've also tried holding down the 'Option' key to run the Apple Hardware Test on the disk, but my internal hard drive is my only option when trying this.
I find it odd that the drive would work normally for all other purposes (reading/writing CD and DVD's), but will not start up from it.
Thanks in advance for any thoughts or suggestions!

An update:
I tested the startup disk using an external FireWire DVD drive and received the exact same results as when attempting to boot from my iBook's internal drive.
Since it's definitely not the drive, I'd have to agree with you that my install disk is bad (although I'm still at a loss as how an undamaged install disk goes bad).
You mentioned that Apple Support would replace the disks for a fee. I went through the Apple Support page and which led me to a page informing me that I had to pay $50 to talk to them once about this issue. I'm hesitant to spend $50 on a call where they'll tell me I can purchase new 10.4 install disks for the discounted fee of $50+shipping for a total investment that's almost the cost of simply upgrading to 10.5.
Has anyone actually purchased replacement install disks from Apple? I'd be interested in knowing what you were charged.
Or is there another method of contacting Apple regarding this issue that won't cost me $50?
