IBook G3/500 256MB..... Good for running eclipse/netbeans?

Hi,
Im currently at university and about to do my FYP....
My main development rig is my Core 2 Duo iMac.
But im over at my girlfriend's a bit of the time and wanted a laptop that allowed me to do a bit of programming for my Final Year Project while I was there so I purchased an iBook.
I got it off eBay for £150 with airport and 2 batteries.
I just wanted to know if it is good enough to runs either eclipse or net-beans... Has anyone had any experience?
All I will be doing is writing and compiling code that has a basic gui on the laptop nothing else.
Im gonna plan to install tiger with the latest updates and upgrade the ram to the max....
Its got a 20GB hard drive aswell...

Hi,
i'll have a go with eclipse's.
I can remeber a program called DoctorJava though that I used in my 1st year. It is very lightweight and will defo work on the iBook... so if eclipse is to slow ill go down that road...
Thanks

  • Is this desktop PC good for running PrE 11?

I'm looking at purchasing a Dell Inspiron 660s for running Premiere Elements 11. Here are the system specs:
    Intel Quad-Core i5-3330S running @2.7 GHz, with a 3.2GHz max-turbo frequency
Windows 7 Professional, 64-bit (PrE 11 will be running 64-bit as well)
    8GB of RAM
    1TB 7200rpm SATA Hard Drive
I will be doing consumer-level editing with only AVCHD video. I do not need the power to run After Effects or anything like that, just Premiere Elements 11, 64-bit. I would like the program to be very fluent, smooth, and fast, but I do not need overkill, as I am only doing consumer-level laid-back AVCHD editing, keying, rendering, soundtrack mixing, etc.
Please let me know if these specs will allow me to smoothly run Adobe Premiere Elements 11 to fit my needs (nothing more, nothing less).
If something here is too much or needs to be upgraded, please let me know. Thanks in advance!

This looks like an excellent machine for editing AVCHD on, Mr. Filmeffects.
In fact, you could probably run After Effects on it too if you want to.
A second hard drive for your media and project files can always give you an added boost. But, with today's systems, it's not always necessary.

  • Running Eclipse on Mavericks

I have a problem with running Mavericks on OS X Mavaricks
with the problem that Java SE 6 is needed for running Eclipse'.
If I press the button, install, OS X starts downloading Java 6,
but I have already Java 7 installed.
I checked my Java version in preference, mac checked I installed Java 7 on mac.
However, a silly thing happened again. No java file in library\internet plug-ins.
Nothing is there. No java, no any other internet plug-ins. either.
Is this an error that Mavericks has? I am sure there was no problem in running Eclipse on the last version of OS X.

So I've been jumping through hoops to get this to work. Ensure you can run java and javac from Terminal. On my install I can get eclipse to launch without installing 1.6 as long as I launch it from terminal with "./eclipse &". Not ideal but it works. I've seen some posts about changing the Info.plist to point to your Java VM but I have not been successful with that yet.

  • Desktop/Laptop suggestions for running Premiere CS 5.5

Hello, I was hoping for some help.
I am looking to buy a computer to run CS 5.5. I will mostly be editing standard definition DV from my Canon GL-2, but I may upgrade my camera in the next year or so and I want to make sure my setup will be able to handle HD.
I have read many of the other threads on here and they have been quite helpful, but I was hoping for a bit more help if anyone can manage. I would prefer not to have to build my own setup and I was wondering if anyone could provide links to desktop or laptop computers that would be good for running Premiere CS 5.5. Has anyone found any computers that are good to go as far as running Premiere? Something with all the right stuff (i7, 16 GB RAM, GTX570) all included?
As far as budget I would like to keep it under $2000, but I could go a bit higher if need be. I have been looking around myself (this isn't just me being totally lazy) but because I'm not so tech savvy I don't want to get the wrong setup. Would something like this be OK? If so, is this a good price or can I do better?

I just got InDesign CS6 and am running it on an iMac and I know the license is good for two computers which will come in very handy for me.  How do I set it up to access it from my second iMac?

I just had an afterthought, Peter, if I could bother you further; if the downstairs iMac that I want to access it from is in my wife's name and not mine (even though I'll be the one using it on her computer) does that affect anything or can I simply load the software straight into her computer without any complications?

  • Which SSD (Solid State Drive) is good for my 2011 MacBook Pro?

Okay I am looking for a good ssd for my macbook pro 2011 between the 150$ and 250$ price range. Which company and price would you guys reccomend?

None, at that price it would be so small as to be practically worthless.
You need about 500 GB to future proof and grow into, and those run about $1200-$1500
SSD's really don't offer that much more performance, it still takes the computer 20 seconds to boot and programs still have to set themselves up so. So although the computer and programs launch a bit faster, it's not instant.
Then to really take advantage of SSD speed, you need to have to have a large amount of files to transfer constantly, to another SSD (or else the slow hard drive slows everything down)
So if you have 500GB to transfer to another 500GB SSD, then that would take about 30 minutes compared to a hour if you had a hard drive instead.
And if you transfer a large amount of data often with a SSD, it wears it out prematurely. SSD's don't even have secure erase ability because allowing that would prematurely wear it out.
So the only thing SSD's are good for are OS boot and program only drives, where little changes, place one's user files on a external 7,200 RPM drive with more space and can handle a large amount of writes and rewrites.
Unfortuntly in a MacBook Pro you have only one space for a drive, you could use a kit to remove the Superdrive and replace it with the hard drive when you add the SSD. Problem with that is you can't boot from any OS X or Windows install disks that way.
So there you have it, SSD is crap.
But if you want to go the SSD + Hard drive with kit route, see Bmer (Dave Merten) who runs Mac Owners Support Group. he will walk you through it all.
And the fastest SSD's can be found on this chart

  • Taglibs, STRUTS, etc. what good for?

... if you can't debug them? I just feel like thrown back to the last century typing code in an editor, deploying, running, ... exception ...
What are tags and all the derivatives like struts, JSTL, etc. good for if you have no tool/IDE that compiles/translates/or at least checks the correctness during development time? the development cycle just exploded to write, pack together, deploy, start, test ... fix error and start over again ... are there any tools/plugins/IDEs that support the developer like with Java code?

custom tags are "black box" for end users (jsp developpers).
I don't understand why you want to debug their code.
You think you have a bug in a tag ? the exception is not clear ?
Generaly, if you have an error, it come from a bad usage or parameter, no ?
highlighting and some writing help are the first step(just using TLD).
I use WSED 5 (eclipse 2 based IDE from IBM) and the JSP syntax checker let me see more error like using not accessible beans or class cast exception.
Try with eclipe 2 ... but I think the JSP debug isn't present.

  • Ibook g3 500-Shuts off when AC Adapter is plugged in?

Greetings! We have an ibook g3 500 here that all of a sudden started exhibiting a strange issue. It was working fine for a long time, and then all of a sudden, it refuses to start up when the AC adapater is plugged in. It starts up fine when the battery is the only thing powering it, but if you try to plug in the AC Adapter when the machine is on being powered from the battery, the computer shuts off immediately. Does anyone have any ideas on what this could be? I have the suspicion it's a logic board or power plug issue, but I'm not sure how much that would be to fix, or if it's really worth it, as from what I've seen, it can be more expensive then the laptop is actually worth. Thanks!

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
I think you have diagnosed your own problem.
An earler discussion of the problem can be found here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=280998&tstart=0
    Maybe something there will help.
Have you tried resetting the PMU?
Check out the repair prices at DT & T Computer Services. They are the most reasonable repair place I've been able to find online, with free diagnostics.
Could a new iBook be in your future? Those G4's are looking like a pretty good buy right now.

    Hi Lionel,
As a general rule of thumb, the ATI Rage 128 Pro will not support a 20" LCD. That being said, there are reports of it doing just that (possibly the edition that went into the cube).
I'm not that familiar with the ins and outs of the Cube, so I can't give you authoritative information on it.

  • Ichat with an Ibook G3 500 mzh...

    Hi everybody,
I'd like to use Ichat with my kids. They have my old Ibook G3 500 mzh with 640 mgs ram on Panther 10.3.9. I have a G4 dbl 450 with 1.25 g ram and the latest version of Tiger and I just got an Isight camera.
Is the Ibook robust enough for the task, should I upgrade it to Tiger, should I use Ichat 2.1 or Ichat AV, should they use the Panasonic DV Webcam they already have or would it be better with an Isight camera?... The Ibook has a firewire connection.
    Sorry about that many questions...
    Thank you

    Hi Jean-Francios,
About the iBook, it is below Spec anyway. (It can be done though) You need iChatUSBCam This allows USB Cams to work on all Macs with iChat (A/V versions) It also allows the use of iSight specifically on Sub G3/600Mhz machines.
If the G4 is on Panther it will have ichat 2 and upgrading to iChat 2.1 should help.

  • Mac Mini or iMac good for graphic apps?

I currently have an older G4, dual processor, 450 MHz, 768mb RAM running Tiger. I'm a graphic designer working mainly with Quark, Freehand, Photoshop. I'm not a heavy Photoshop user. I'm trying to decide if I should upgrade to a G5 tower, or if the new iMacs or Mac Mini would work for me. I've heard that the Mac Mini could be a step backwards for my type of use. Any informed opinions would greatly help. Obviously speed is not my number one concern, but I wouldn't want to be slower! I do have an external CD/DVD burner and I need to keep my external ZIP drive.
    Thanks,
    Kristi

The Mac Mini may not be good for your use (Intel Macs in gerneral) do not have a native version of Photoshop (PPC only app so it would run under PPC emulation), so unless you have 1+GB RAM it would run slow, not as slow as on your current machine though so you might not notice the way some others might. The Mac Mini (even the core solo 1.5Ghz) will be much faster than your current machine, any modern Mac would be.I would go for an iMac since it, IMO, is going to be a better buy, since it doesn't cost that much more, and is a top of the line consumer machine. If you don't do much Photoshoping the G5 Power Mac is overkill, IMO. You may even want to look at refurb G5 iMacs if you want to save a little money.

  • A JRE or JDK must be available in order to run Eclipse

    Hello Colleagues ,
I have started with the SAP HANA Basics course offered at OpenSAP .
I am at my first steps for Installing Eclipse .

Thanks for all the Replies to my original post
When u start Afresh to Learn SAP HANA and installing the tools on 64 -bit windows  :-
Step 1 : Install JDK or JRE .
    I found a link to share :
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jdk7-downloads-1880260.html
    Step 2 :
Once you are done with installation, set the env variables. Right click My Computer> properties> Advanced settings->Envoirmental Variables
    Add two system variables:
E.g. if you have installed JDK . Its rests in the following path
    JAVA_HOME: c:/program files/java/<jdkfoldername>
    CLASSPATH: %JAVA_HOME%/bin
    In My case
Step 3 : Download and Unzip
    sapjvm-7.1.018-windows-x64.zip
    Step 4 : Download and Unzip neo-javaee6-wp-sdk-2.34.16.1.zip
    Inside your Folder DRIVE:\<Folderpath>\eclipse-jee-juno-SR2-win32-x86_64\eclipse
eclipse.exe file would be there run it .
Create workspace and start using .

    Hello,
I am not a PC security expert but that software looks pretty suspicious to me. If you google the name of the software there are a large number of posts from people asking how to remove it and suggesting that it has been installed without their consent.
I suspect that it is adware which hijacks the users browser home page / default search, displays adverts and generates revenue for the owner. It is possible that it also causes other security issues.
I don't know enough about that software to feel confident in telling you that you '''should''' remove it (especially if you are getting value from the service it offers) but I will say that I wouldn't feel comfortable having it running on my own machine.
If you like the software then by all means keep it but I do suggest running a range of antiviurs / malware removal tools. These will run alongside your existing anti-virus software:
    * [http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/default.aspx Microsoft Safety Scanner]
    * [http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/ MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware]
    * [http://support.kaspersky.com/faq/?qid=208283363 TDSSKiller - AntiRootkit Utility]
    * [http://www.surfright.nl/en/hitmanpro/ Hitman Pro]
    * [http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner/ ESET Online Scanner]
If any of these flag easylifeapp as a problem then I suggest removing it.
    I hope that helps.

  • Is the i7 13" MacBook Air good for me if I use...

Trying to see if a MacBook Air would be good for me if I use:
-Photoshop, iPhoto, and other photography apps from the Mac App Store? (I just recently picked up a DSLR to get into for photography so I imagine I'll be using these programs frequently)
    -Vuze
-Handbrake (how long does it usually take for an Air to rip a DVD?)
-Casual Gaming (The most intensive game I'm looking at is Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Can the air run it?)
    -Mail
    -Internet (some online videos, etc)
With all these uses, would a i7 13" MacBook Air be able to handle all these tasks for me and perform them all reasonably well?

    Smiller,
I think the hesitation to answer comes from the fact that a good portion of your questions are at least somewhat subjective. I have the 13" i7 4 GB  x 256 GB MBA, and I find the unit perfectly satisfactory performing most of the task you mention. However, I don't do all of them, all the time either. It's been a couple of months since I ripped a DVD, and I didn't time it. I think it took me an hour and a half to rip a two hour movie. On my MacBook Pro, which I recently sold, it maybe would have taken a bit over an hour to perform the same task.
Then again, for most of my tasks that I do everyday, the MBA would edge out the MBP. The SSD makes a big difference for certain tasks. Albiet, you could equip an MBP with an SSD and the advantage in certain cases would disappear, and the MBP would reign in all cases, except of course portability.
For your photo, internet, bit-torrent work you will probably find the MBA perfectly suited, provided the screen size is adequate for your taste. You see, we then again run into a subjective area.
What can I say, go to an Apple Store and give it a whirl. Find out first hand.
