IBook G3 800MHZ-experiencing random sudden shut-downs

Hi,
I am looking for a little knowledgeable advice with a problem I just started experiencing. I recently wiped my hard drive clean and installed Tiger from a retail CD version. I then used system upgrade to take it to 10.4.11.
I have begun experiencing random sudden power shut-downs. The bad, instantaneous type like someone ripping out the power cord. This happens when running the iBook off of the power adapter and/or running it off of the battery. The battery is a fairly new replacement that holds a full charge.
I have run the following procedures trying to solve the mystery:
-Resetting the PRAM
-Resetting the PMU (several times)
-Starting up in Safe Mode
-Repairing permissions using Disk Utility.
Suspicions after reading hours of support forums
-Bad DC board -- fairly easily and inexpensive to replace
-Bad logic board -- I see there is a shim trick that I may try.-- I don't want to replace it since they are so expensive.
-possible kernel attacks from latest update of Tiger on a G3
Any suggestions would be more than appreciated. Thanks.
Scott

It is unique.
I'm not sure about the shim trick. It sounds like a different problem from the one the shim works to fix, but you could try it.
It's really quite a chore to replace the logic board.

Often you will find that it is just as cheap (or nearly so) to send it in to DT & T Computer Services in Fremont, California. They offer the cheapest repair I've found and have a six-month warranty on the repair.

Has anyone experienced apps suddenly shutting down on their iPad Mini running iOS7.0.4? Just started in the last few days

Have you tried restarting or resetting your iPad?
Restart: Press On/Off button until the Slide to Power Off slider appears, select Slide to Power Off and, after It shuts down, press the On/Off button until the Apple logo appears.
Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10 seconds).
    No data will be lost.

  • IBook will suddenly shut down and not turn back on

My iBook (apporx. 5 yrs. old) will suddenly shut down while I'm working and not back on. Most of the time after it's been turned off for days it won't turn back on, although it's plugged in and the battery is charged 100%. But on the occations it does power up, everything works properly. Could my battery be completly shot?
    iBook   Mac OS 9.0.x

I too have that problem, but since apple replaced my battery for free, it still does that. I once heard that once your iBook reaches a certain temperature, it will just turn off the screen. usually when it happens to me, I just restart my machine the old way (control-apple-power), but it isn't so good either from what I understand! it is a bad way to work, but until apple fixes the bug, we'll just have to live!
(ps) is there any reason you still run os 9 (cause it is officially discontinued as of 2004)? you should be able to purchase mac OS X (10.2 or 10.3) from ebay or your local mac repair shop (we fix macs in palo alto, ca probably sells it still) I just wanted to inform you of this since you obviously had no idea!

  • Spontaneous sudden shut down

Hi, I'm new to Macs--about 6 months with my iBook.
Recently, it has been suddenly shutting down, turning off with a black screen. No warning.
When I restart, it checks the disk, then stops showing a couple of directory errors. I have to turn it off then turn it back on to reboot.
    Any ideas what's going on?
    Thanks!

  • IMac suddenly shutting down

Below is what my iMac tells me when it suddenly shuts down or freezes. Does this mean anything to anybody. Quite frustrating. I don't want to buy a new machine if there is some fix for this but I also cannot afford to be without my machine while it is in the shop for a look under the hood.
    Any suggestions would most appreciated.

  • Sudden shut-downs

    Hallo,
I also encouter that sudden shutting-down problem on my 12" iBook 1,33 GHz PPC G4.
I've read a lot of threads in here on related stuff.
    To be exact
    * I had both shut-downs and display-darks, on power-supply and on batteries.
    * I ran extended AHTest, it reports everything is fine.
    * Power Supply colors behave ok.
    * Battery does go up to 98% only. I had a replacement, it counts only 45 cycles.
    * Slight tweaking or shaking the machine doesn't reproduce prob's nor help.
    * Closing and opening the screen solves the display-dark issue.
So what i would like to find out is, if there is a way to tell if it's a logical board issue or a dc-in-board issue; before deciding for a replacement part or a replacement machine.
p.s. some lines quoted from system log that may tell sth:
(shutdown resetted date. reboot was at "Jan 1 02:00:33")
Jan 1 02:00:34 localhost kernel[0]: ApplePMU::CLOCK RESET! PMU WAS PROBABLY RESET SOMEHOW!
    Jan 1 02:00:37 localhost kernel[0]: ApplePMU::PMU forced shutdown, cause = -127

    Hey mono,
Closing and opening the screen solves the display-dark issue.
It might be that you have a reed switch problem (or an inverter cable problem more difficult to repair).
If you raise the keyboard and open up the ram shield, in front of the RAM are two connectors. The one closest to the display is the trackpad connector the other one further toward the front of that is the reed switch connector. I have a 1.33 12" logic board here and can identify the connector but since it's apart I can't tell if there's enough room in there to be able to pull that connector.
Maybe a tweezers with a long right angle tip.
In the service manual the trackpad connector has 4 blue wires and the reed switch connector has a red and black. If you can disconnect that plug that could solve your problem. The worst thing that would happen is that your iBook would not go to sleep when you close it.
So another test of the reed switch would be the next time it goes dead pass a magnet over the area just inside of the foreward edge of the CD slot about 1" to the right near the bottom of the keyboard. If that solves the problem it's most certainly the reed switch.

  • Powerbook suddenly shuts down...

Last night my powerbook suddenly shut down while in use. After I rebooted, there was a message saying the date was set back to an earlier date and keeping that the computer could face unstable condition. So I checked under preferences > date and time but the date seemed correct.
After that I used my cloned external HD to boot into OS and ran DiskWarrior to see if there was any disk errors. While running that I got a Kernal Panic message (the power sign, w/multi-language), so I shut it down and attempted to restart, but then it had problem booting into the desktop.
After restarting, the open-source gray screen came up, asked to type in "mac-boot" to boot or power button to shut down, so I typed in the prompt "mac-boot", and then a little OS folder icon showed up with a question mark flashing.
So I shut down the computer again, took the battery out and did the power-management reset (hold down pwr btn for 7 secs). Then I was able to boot back into desktop.
Has anyone experienced sudden shut-down on your PB? I think this is the second that has happened on this PB.

my 15" powerbook has done the same thing, well at least the first part of your message. The computer shuts down suddenly and then I get the error message about the date and time being set to the wrong date, etc. i thought this had to do with the new battery received from the battery exchange.
Where is this other external battery found. Is it user replaceable?

  • IMacs suddenly shuts down

    Hi,
Since a while my iMac suddenly shuts down and reboots.
It starts with a frame freeze, can't move the mouse cursor. After a few seconds my iMac shuts down.
I have no idea what the problem can be.
This is the report of Console when it shuts down.

    Hey MagicMarcus,
Thanks for the question. I understand that you are experiencing issues with your iMac unexpectedly shutting down or restarting. The following resource provides some great information if this happens, along with potential resolution steps if it is a reoccurring issue:

  • Sudden shut down (not covered by Extended Repair Program)

I started having problems with sudden shut downs on my 17" iMac G5 1.9GHz lately (actually problem started after upgrading to Mac OS 10.4.8 this week): the computer will go dark like with a power outage - sometimes while I am working on something, other times while it is just idle.
I have researched the discussion board and found that earlier iMacs seem to have a known power problem, but have not found anything on my generation iMac so far (serial # W8547***).
I have tried all suggestions - including resetting SMU & PRAM, checked power lines, downloaded the new Security Update etc - nothing seems to do the trick. I hooked up an external harddrive last night to back up data - five tries each failed, because computer shuts down at some point or the other.
System log lists shutdown causes 2 & -110...

    Hi, J & F.
I am sure you have searched no only the forum, but also the support pages of apple.
If i understand you right, it happend EXACTLY after the update of the OSX. It looks tgo me as if something went wrong in this process. I would try:
    a) to start up in "single user mode" - this checks whether it is something else than the bare operating system; It would give you the indication that your machine is, hardware-wise, still fine. This would eliminate the Powersuplly problem. However, it does not isolate the powersupply as faultive in case that this step doesn't work!
    b) to start up in "Target disk mode" - to see whether you can get anything reasonable done. this helps you to see whether the disk can be used... nothing more.
The real solution probably comes only by reinstalling the original software from your install disk. Be sure that you have a backup of all your files!
I would try and "Archive and Install" , but do , directly after this, a "Repair permissions". If this doesn't help, i would go through an "ERASE and INSTALL". In both cases, don't upgrade the lates OSX versions, stay with the one from your install disk. only, if everything works, go and update OSX.
Hope this helps - please, post back.

  • My MacBook suddenly shut down and won't turn back on - how do I get it to turn back on?

My MacBook suddenly shut down after freezing up and I cannot get it to turn back on again.  I tried the suggestions in the manual and none of them worked to turn it back on. Is there something I am not doing correctly?  The little green light on the charger connector is green but not as bright as normal, it was charged by over 70% before it shut down, so I do not think it is a battery problem.  Is there anything I can do to turn it back on?  Thank you for any help given, I really appreciate it.

If it won't bong, then try an SMC reset.

My iphone4 suddenly shut down.I pluged into a charger it started vibration and got heat up in off mood. I also checked it to genius he said that its battery is ok but problem is some thing else. It is still in off mod. what i have to do?

I  am having a similar odd issue. First of all this summer i took my iphone 4 to apple because my screen had quit. I could hear calls and texts coming thru but screen was unresponsive. I was a month out of warranty so the nice fella at apple gave me a 30 day warranty, then replaced my handset with a refurb. Saturday night at dinner i was on my phine and it died. I plugged it in thinking nothing of it and went to bed. When i wooe up after the charger had been on all night all i had was the black screen with the battery (red) and lightning bolt, meaning it knew it plugged in but still did nothing. So off to apple i go. They said i was out of warranty and the problem (never said what problem) would cost 170 bucks to fix. So i went and upgraded to the iphone 5 ( figured if i'm spending that anyways may as well be on a new phone). When I got home i tinkered with the old one with all the online suggestions i could find. (Cleaning ports, hard reset, putting into recovery mode, and checking indicators for water damage which there was none). Still only saw the battery symbol. I left it alone figuring i can sell off cheap and someone else can repair. Last night for kicks i plugged it in again and it came to life! It is in recovery mode (needs to be hooked to itunes to regain functionality) but showed 100% battery charge. I went to show my bf and realized an issue. If its not plugged into the wall adaptor, it wont turn on. I figured then that if i can get it plugged in and pull it up on itunes maybe it would be fine. When plugged into the computer it wont hold enough power. It thrns on shows the apple for 30 seconds, shuts off. My ending conclusion on my own is that it needs a new battery in order to be revived. Anyone think this sounds like a reasonable conclusion? Or will i be wasting money? If i can get it restored to functional, cheaply i can give to my bf (his pos lg phone is almost toast) or sell it.
