IBook G3 as file server
I am looking for some information on using an old iBook G3 as a file server. Specifically I am wondering if it will be possible to store HD video on this computer (or attached external drives) then link this to my airport extreme base station for wireless streaming to the living room TV or over the internet to my laptop as I travel around the world. Any info would be most welcome.
which machine are you taking with you? what is your upload speed of your internet service? do you have any external drives? do you have mobile me?
you have some options. first, you have to consider where you are traveling to & how much you are willing to pay for access to the web. it's not going to be fast everywhere & free access can be really hard to find.
you would be better off picking up a portable drive & store your content there, taking it with you.
your next option would be to use a USB drive plugged into your airport extreme. sign up for a free 60 day trial of mobile me & enable back to my mac, both on your road mac & the base station. anytime your computer is on the net & can see the base station, the drive should show up with Finder. You could also do this with a free dyndns.org account, but you'll need to know exactly how to mount the drive remotely & be able get thru all the firewalls there may be.
the 3rd option involves the ibook - hooking it up to the router via ethernet. you can then access it over the wireless network. to access the machine remotely, probably the easiest tool would be ShareTool & a dyndns acct. If you are low on space, then a firewire drive will be needed to be plugged into the ibook.
your path of least resistance will be just taking a small HD with you.

Using an old iBook as a file server...
Okay. So, right now I'm using an old Apple iBook G3. It's a Dual-USB 800 MHz version. It's running Panther 10.3.9...
In the near future (Two months, maybe) I'll be purchasing a new Macbook. I don't want to just pawn off my old mac, or throw it out (Everyone I know has new PC's. Giving them an old mac would be useless).
Plus, I know that once I move all the files I think I need on it, and toss it out, BAM! I'll realize I forgot a folder or something else on it. So what I want to know is...
Is there any way that I can use this old iBook as a file server in any way? I've seen such things as "Back to My Mac" which does what i want it to, but (of course) is a leopard-to-leopard only feature. Is there any way that I can let this iBook sit on my home network (Wired in, if need be) and reach it from... say... Rochester?
Thanks for your time. Even if it is for a quick: "No."You'll be more likely to get informed opinions if you ask in the iBook G3 forums rather than here in the MacBook area. When you repost, it will help if you describe what sort of "file server" you are thinking of; how many users, what types of files, etc. so that people have an idea of what your needs might be.
Is there any way that I can let this iBook sit on my home network (Wired in, if need be) and reach it from... say... Rochester?
Yes, it's certainly possible. How easy will depend on large part on your ISP and your home network setup.

Setting up permissions on the file server
I am attempting to set up a file server with the OS X Server that came with my mac mini.
I need to be able to set up permissions for 4 different users to be able to read and write, however with no permission to delete.
I went to the MacMini section (on the left hand corner of the server app), then storage, and from there set up custom permissions
I added the four users as a group.
When I added the group to have access to the needed file, I clicked on the drop downs.
I allowed all permissions for inheritance and reading. I selected all permissions for writting except for "delete" and "Delete subfolders and files"
This give me a "-" sign next to write versus the check symbol (like it was shown for Read and Inheritance)
After I set this up... I went to one of the users to test it out, it would not allow me to drop a file on the server or delete anything.
How do I get this to work the way I want it!?!You can not do this with a single ACE. Or at least I've never been able to. This shoud resolve.
Please make sure you test this however. Remember that trying to overwrite is a delete and then a write. So if you deny delete, then you can not replace a file or folder with one of the same name. Also, renaming a file is also a delete. You will not be able to rename. Make sure you test this before putting into production to ensure you are getting the behavior you want.
You have a share point named Archive. You have a group called Archive_Users. The Archive_Users are allowed to read and write but NOT delete data in the Archive. Do do this, follow these steps:
1: Create a group called Archive_Users and place your users into the group.
2: Define your share point in File Sharing.
3: Edit to share point to add the group. Press the + button and start typing the group name. When it appears, set the permission to Read Write. You permission window should have 4 entries at this point. The everyone, the group (likely staff), and the owner (likely the server admin). Then the one you added. The bottom three are POSIX, the final one is an ACE.
4: Now, you need to get your hands dirty and create a custom ACE. Server.app does not allow you to use the Deny rules so break out Terminal.
5: I will assume the Archive folder is in this path /Shares/Archive. First get a list of the folder's ACL using:
ls -le /Shares/Archive
It should like like the following:
drwxr-xr-x+ 2 carbon wheel 68 Feb 18 22:27 Archive
0: user:_spotlight inherited allow list,search,file_inherit,directory_inherit
1: group:archive_users allow list,add_file,search,add_subdirectory,delete_child,readattr,writeattr,readextat tr,writeextattr,readsecurity,file_inherit,directory_inherit
6: Now you must add your deny rule. Use the following command:
chmod +a# 2 "group:archive_users deny delete,file_inherit,directory_inherit" /Shares/Archive
The syntax here is to add (+a) an ACE at index 2 (# 2), an ACE for the group archive_users that states the group can no delete any file or folder and this is inherited all the way down.
7: If you have content in the folder already, be sure to propagate the permissions.
8: Test, test, test.
Remember, the deny rules can have some odd effects. As mentioned, I can think of the renaming and the overwrite as possible deterrents.
A possible alternative is to not give everyone read write access to the Archive. It might be more sane to define two groups. The first groups, Archive_admins, is a subset of users who are entrusted with moving data to archived status. The second group, Archive_users, is the rest of the team and they have read only access, allowing them to pull data but not edit the archive. This allows you to use two simple ACEs in Server.app: Archive_admin = read/write and Archive_users = read.

Configure EP6SP9 KM in a file server instead of KM Database
Hi All,
We are at EP6SP9 in Windows 2003.
As a part of my user requirment, I need to set up all my KM folders in a file repository and not in KM Database. The users would view this folders as KM Folders and need to utilise all the facilities offered by KM like Versioning, subscription and notification.
I need to also integrate the central ADS Server as the user management engine (Windows Authentication) so that all the users automatically logon to the portal when they log-on to the system.TREX also has to index through this documents in the file server.
Need some advice on the same.
1) I have seen a document entitled "Integration of Windows File Services into SAP KM Platform using SSO and WebDAV Repository Manager". Is this the one that I have to use for setting the system up or any other suggestions. Has anyone tried connecting KM to an file server Database.
2) Can I utilise all the KM Functionalities with the documents and folders residing in a file server.
Would love to interact with anyone who has worked on the same.
Regards,
Rajan.KThere's already lots of information on the subject right here on SDN. Here are a few pointers to get you started:
CM repository documentation in SAP Help:
http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/62/468698a8e611d5993600508b6b8b11/content.htm
Weblog with step-by-step instructions on creating an FSDB repository:
Creating a CM Repository Manager - FSDB
I basically just followed the weblog and it worked. In fact, some steps in the weblog are not necessary if you intend to use the default "documents" repository. In that case, just switch to FSDB persistence mode, add your network paths and it should work after restarting the engine.
Note that the contents of your repository will be deleted once you switch unless you backup your files to the FSDB root prior to that.
Hope this helps. -
How to mirror file server?
I run a small office network with Mac OS X Server 10.4.x doing various services including AFP. My wife and I also work from home and we would like to be able to access remotely various files which are held on the server.
We can do this over the internet, but the connections are not too quick. Ideally I would like to be able to run a mirrored copy of the file server on a little server at home, so that we can access the files locally and then have the servers keep each other up to date across the internet.
Is this possible?
TIA
JamesCan anybody help me with this?

Changed laptops, now iTunes can't find my music on my file server
Ok, here's what happened when I recently switched laptops
- I use iTunes to point to the music I store on my file server via a network share (WinXP)
- I manually manage my iTunes folders
- I took the \My Documents\My Music\iTunes directory from my old laptop and copied it to the same location to my new laptop
- Installed iTunes 9 on the new laptop
- When iTunes9 loaded on the new laptop ALMOST all music files in my library loaded with an exclamation point indicating that it couldn't locate the file (even though the file locations never changed)
Ok... so here's the problem. I have over 20,000 songs with ratings information and if I just re-add all the files from the network share to the iTunes library again then it looks like I'd lose those ratings.
The only way that I can see to fix things is to individually point iTunes to the network share location of the file for each file... YUCK!
Is there a script or something I can write to tell it to find these files, or at least copy the ID3 tags to the duplicated songs that I re-added from the network share.
Any help is GREATLY appreciated!Something is different in the paths to the files....hence itunes cannot find them.
Sound like you know about the ITL file, which is why you copied it over.
What you can do is look in its companion XML file to see the paths itunes thinks it should be using.
If your XML is really big, open it using WordPad instead of NotePad. About the 10th line down is the itunes preference setting for the itunes folder:
key>Music Folder</key><string>file://localhost/K:/iTunes%20Music/</string>
On my system it's K:/iTunes Music
The %20 just indicates a space.
Then each song will have its own path
<key>Location</key><string>file://localhost/K:/iTunes%20Music/Cowboy%20Junkies/The%20Trinity%20Session/07%2 0200%20More%20Miles.mp3</string>
Now....can you see ANYTHING funny in one of those song paths? Is there an extra space, a different user name, anything different than what you could browse to in Windows Explorer? -
File Server Role: Slow access for "opened files" and slow Explorer browsing
Since we migrated our fileserver from Windows Server 2008 R2 to Windows Server 2012 we are facing two major problems:
1. Opening files which are already opened by other users takes about 1 minute before the file actually opens. This is not only for Office files such as Excel and Word, but also for other (not office) files. Again, this problem only rises when the file(s)
is/are already opened by another user. There seems to be a sort of "Lock" check time which is about 45 to 60 seconds.
2. The other problem is browsing via Explorer through the network drive (all clients are Windows 7 clients). Half of the time there is some kind of "hick up" with displaying the results of the folder. I cannot figure out a patern, but if there
is no "hick up" then browsing is very fast (also in the busiest times of the working day)... If there is a "hick up" the result can take about 50 seconds to display the content of a folder.
I suspect the SMB implementation / settings of Windows Server 2012 which are causing the problems...
Things I tried:
1. Changed the Oplocks wait time to 10 seconds (which is the minimum). The result is that openening files does indeed go some faster (still taking about 45 seconds).
2. Disabled SMB2: the result is that browsing is fast... Opening files does go faster. BUT: we are then facing other problems like some files are not able to open... This setting was, after getting a lot of complaints from the users, changed back to enabled
SMB2.
3. Within the NIC card properties I disabled "QoS packet Scheduler", "Link-Layer Topology Discovery Mapper I/O Driver", "Link-Layer Topology Discovery Responder" and IPv6 (as we only use IPv4).
All above with not the promising results.
The server is a dedicated (virtual machine on vSphere 5.1) fileserver.
Please Advice since this is not workable, and we have postponed the migration of the fileserver for our aother location.Hi Dave,
I suggest you disable all third party applications like Anti-Virus application to test if it could reduce the waiting time when accessing a file.

Slow applications start from win 2012 file server using win 7 workstations
I hope someone can help me with why applications are slow to load i have replaced a 8 year old server running win 2003 and replaced it with dell t620 running win 2012 r2 it is like 20 times faster but it is slower than the old server. the office has
7 win 7 x64 machines all our applications are running from win 2012 file server. The server is set up as following the server runs with two hyper-v machines one machine runs ad, file server, dhcp, dns and printer server and the other is domino server and remote
desktop.
the machine is more than capable but it is not so i started reading after i run out of ideas. i looked every where but the issue is with the server after trying everything else i did a simple test If i go to the application folder and click on it apps load
instantly if i then type a unc path it takes from instant load to 3 and a bit seconds the same as the workstations. The same speed if I use ip address.
network cards are intel
i would really appreciate if somebody has suggestions that i could try
thank youHi,
Do you mean that applications in the application folder start slowly when you access the application folder on the Windows 2012 R2 file server from Windows 7 workstations using UNC path or IP address. Do all the files in the application folder have the same
issue? Please create a shared folder on the file server, then access the shared folder from Windows 7 workstations to check if the issue still exists.
You could disable SMBv3 on server 2012 to check if the issue related to SMB protocol.
How to enable and disable SMBv1, SMBv2, and SMBv3 in Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows 8, and Windows Server 2012
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2696547/en-us
Warning: We do not recommend that you disable SMBv2 or SMBv3. Disable SMBv2 or SMBv3 only as a temporary troubleshooting measure. Do not leave SMBv2 or SMBv3 disabled.

Create a new web application, how shall I update the file server.xml
Hi,
I will create a new web application, i.e named newApp. Then I create a file structure as follows:
- <server-root>/newApp
- <server-root>/newApp/WEB-INF
- <server-root>/newApp/WEB-INF/classes
Then I must tell the server that I have created a new web application. Then I must update my file server.xml, How shall I do this and where in the file shall I type in the new information?
I use windows XP Pro, and Tomcat 4.1.27.
My server.xml file looks like below:

<!-- Note that component elements are nested corresponding to their
parent-child relationships with each other -->
<!-- A "Server" is a singleton element that represents the entire JVM,
which may contain one or more "Service" instances. The Server
listens for a shutdown command on the indicated port.
Note: A "Server" is not itself a "Container", so you may not
define subcomponents such as "Valves" or "Loggers" at this level.
-->
<Server port="8005" shutdown="SHUTDOWN" debug="0">

By default, a non-SSL HTTP/1.1 Connector is established on port 8080.
You can also enable an SSL HTTP/1.1 Connector on port 8443 by
following the instructions below and uncommenting the second Connector
entry. SSL support requires the following steps (see the SSL Config
HOWTO in the Tomcat 4.0 documentation bundle for more detailed
instructions):
* Download and install JSSE 1.0.2 or later, and put the JAR files
into "$JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/ext".
* Execute:
%JAVA_HOME%\bin\keytool -genkey -alias tomcat -keyalg RSA (Windows)
$JAVA_HOME/bin/keytool -genkey -alias tomcat -keyalg RSA (Unix)
with a password value of "changeit" for both the certificate and
the keystore itself.
By default, DNS lookups are enabled when a web application calls
request.getRemoteHost(). This can have an adverse impact on
performance, so you can disable it by setting the
"enableLookups" attribute to "false". When DNS lookups are disabled,
request.getRemoteHost() will return the String version of the
IP address of the remote client.

ignored in both cases.
maxActiveSessions: If 0 or greater, having too many active
sessions will result in some being swapped out. minIdleSwap

If it is not possible to swap sessions new sessions will

This avoids thrashing when the site is highly active.
minIdleSwap: Sessions must be idle for at least this long

activity.
0 means sessions will almost always be swapped out after

maxIdleSwap: Sessions will be swapped out if idle for this

override this. This isn't exact: it is checked periodically.
-1 means sessions won't be swapped out for this reason,
although they may be swapped out for maxActiveSessions.
If set to >= 0, guarantees that all sessions found in the
Store will be loaded on startup.
maxIdleBackup: Sessions will be backed up (saved to the Store,
but left in active memory) if idle for this long (in seconds),
and all sessions found in the Store will be loaded on startup.
If set to -1 sessions will not be backed up, 0 means they
should be backed up shortly after being used.
To clear sessions from the Store, set maxActiveSessions, maxIdleSwap,
and minIdleBackup all to -1, saveOnRestart to false, then restart
Catalina.

Something like this:

<servlet-class>blablapackage.Blablaclass</servlet-class>
<init-param>...</init-param>

Now this may not solve your problem. Make sure you refer to your servlets using their full qualified names.btw, just to be sure, what is your definition of "servlet"? (i mean: any java class or only javax.servlet.Servlet) -
File Server Configuration on Windows Server 2012 R2
Dear All,
I need your support in my scenario.
Work Environment:
I work in a company where we have multiple departments.
My Department is elearning.
All Departments get Internet and Network Access from IT Department.
My Department Requirement:
I Need to Install and Configure File Server and assign storage space for 25 users for storing their respective work files.
Availability:
I have installed windows 2012 R2 on my physical server which is connected to my local network
My Question:
Do I have to make my server a DC to Install and configure File Server for my requirement?
If No, then How can I fulfill my requirement ?
Kindly revert.
Best Regards,
AhmedDo you already have an AD domain in your environment? If yes then simply add your File Server as member server and use your AD user accounts to grant the required accesses.
If no then you can:
Create local user accounts and provide access using them
or make your server a DC, create AD accounts and then grant the required accesses
Before proceeding, it would be better to see with your IT department what is already available and their recommendations to manage your needs.

Problem in Archiving File From FTP Server to XI File Server Using FCC
Hi,
The scenario is file to IDOc. XI has to read the input file from client FTP server and archive it to XI local file server. Archiving on XI server is working fine without FCC (for xml files). But with FCC, the sender FTP adapter is archiving empty files (0 kb files).
I've checked SXMB_MONI, even there I can see the file data and the IDoc is getting posted with proper data. But, the archived file is empty. Not sure about the problem.
Please suggest. Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Joe.Hi,
File adapter has the functionality which support the empty file handling.
Handling of Empty Files
Specify how empty files (length 0 bytes) are to be handled.
○ Do Not Create Message
No XI messages are created from empty files.
The files are processed according to the selected Processing Mode.
For example, if the processing mode is Delete, empty files are deleted in the source directory.
○ Process Empty Files
XI messages are created with an empty main payload.
The files are processed according to the selected Processing Mode.
○ Skip Empty Files
No XI messages are created from empty files.
Empty files are skipped and remain in the source directory.

Hi Team,
we have a file server on windows server 2008 R2, I have copied some data from one server to another server using robocopy . I have checked access permission it seems okay no issues with access permission. but when i am trying to delete these folder i am
getting below error message
Error message:-
The source file name are larger than is supported by the file system.try moving to a location which has a shorter path name or try renaming to shortcut names before attempting this operations
Regards,
Triyambak
Regards, TriyambakI have tried everything , but nothing help , getting same error
could any one help me regarding this.
Regards, Triyambak
I have not looked at the other thread mentioned, but usually when this ends up happening, There are several ways to go about it. One is to map a drive to the UNC path deeper into the folder structure.
So instead of C:\long\path\that\we\dont\want\files\in
You map a drive.. lets say M:\ to \\computer\c$\long\path\that\we\dont\want
Now, when you open Explorer to M:\ you've elimintated the length of the path down to M:\files\in which is completely usable.
The other way, is to shorten the names of everything. For example...
Folder structure like this:
Root
-----Folder1
-----Folder2
--------------Folder2A
-----Folder3
--------------Folder3A
Rename all the folders to shorten up the path. Rename Folder1 to '1' Rename Folder2 to '2', Rename folder3 to '3. Then try to delete. If it's still too long, go one folder deeper. Rename Folder2A to '1' and
Rename Folder3A to '1' and so on. Basically keep renaming everything to a single digit character and eventually you'll shrink the path down to where you can shift-delete everything remaining.
Hope that helps.

File Server/AFP gets slow after a week or so
Hi all,
I manage a file server at our office here, with around 20-30 users, running 10.3.9 server. Users connect via AFP for general office duties, but also remote-desktop into a windows server using Rdesktop via X11. They use SMB to access their files from the windows side.
I find after a week or so that logins to the shares, and general file access gets incredibly slow, and grinds to a halt eventually, but comes good after the server is rebooted.
It is usually quick to authenticate in any case, but takes an age to bring up the list of shares that the users can pick from (probably 10-15 at most depending on their permissions). Even after a fresh reboot it takes about 10 seconds to bring up the list of shares to pick from. Is there any way to fix this?
I find that is someone has their computer set to calculate folder sizes on a server drive/share it can make the server grind to a standstill, but even with everyone set up correctly it still goes slowly all by itself after a few days/weeks of running. Logging in via Remote Desktop becomes slow at this point too.
I've tried some of the tips in this thread below with only limited success.
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=343979&tstart=15
Any help is greatly appreciatedAs you upgraded the router's firmware, reset the router for 30 seconds and reconfigure the router from scratch.
On the router setup page,Under the Wireless tab, click on the Advanced Wireless Settings...Change the Beacon Interval to 75, Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304,Change the RTS Threshold to 2307 and Click on Save Settings... -
Migrate File Server data from one volume to another
I am looking for the best way to handle this situation. We have a VHD that has a 4KB cluster size that is getting close to the 16TB mark so no expanding past that due to the cluster size. In the past whenever i needed to pull this off i would preload as
much data as possible with robocopy, then during a maintenance window take the share offline, do a refresh with robocopy then flip everything that i needed to flip drive letter and share setup etc.
I have the space to do a complete copy like this so that is not an issue. But other things to keep in mind are the data is deduplicated so we are talking 20TB total. The other is the backup of the File Server is done at a file level with DPM so DPM will
see this as a new volume and be an issue.
At this point i have time to plan and am just looking for ideas.Hi,
If you want to copy files/folders from one Volume to another volume, you could use the File Server Migration Tool (FSMT) or Robocopy to accomplish.
The tool can move all of the files from the shares on your original volume to the new volume.
FSMT and Robocopy will not copy Share permissions but only NTFS permissions. So if the drive letter will not be changed, you can backup and restore the Share permission with steps here:
Saving and restoring existing Windows shares
