IBook G3 - DMG files won't mount!

I recently acquired an iBook G3 Clamshell (366 mhz) with Tiger (10.4.11) installed on it.
I can't seem to download dmg files, as I get a 'Mounting Failed' error. I have tried creating a new admin, no luck. Unfortunately, the computer didn't come with the Tiger install cd's. I have also tried verifying and repairing the disk permissions with no luck.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Well, now I can't get it to safe boot. I've done it before, no problem but it won't work, now. I restarted, holding the Shift key, and it never would start after 10 minutes or so but the fan just kept getting louder and louder. I tried it 3 times. Then I tried booting from the Disk Warrior CD and it took 3 tries before it finally booted off the CD—I would hold the C key and it would just sit there and not start up and all of the sudden the restart gong would go off, I'd still hold the C key and it did this 3 times before it finally started from the Disk Warrior CD.
Did you want me to try moving those files off to the desktop even though I can't restart in safe boot or run disk utility?
I'm gonna call it a night for now. Maybe I can try the safe boot again tomorrow. How long do you think I should hold down the shift key before I give up?
Thanks again!

  • Disk Utility crashes and dmg files won't mount

My girlfriend's Powerbook has been acting up for a while now, and we still can't seem to get it working properly.
One day, her Adobe programs just stopped working. Tried several things, but nothing worked and she ended up reinstalling OSX. That fixed the problem, but then she noticed she could no longer open DMG files. Accordingly, she tried to run Disk Utility but then found that it would always crash when trying to open.
She ran Disk Utility from the install disc, but nothing turned up. She also tried looking up several methods of fixing the DMG problem (deleting various files), but nothing's worked.
If I remember correctly, she also tried using the 10.3.9 combo updater some time ago, but that didn't help. We're actually not totally sure about that, so we're trying to reinstall the 10.3.9 combo updater, except for the fact that Apple has only made the file available as a DMG (which she obviously can't open).
So can anyone please help us get Disk Utility to stop crashing, and get those DMG files to open/mount? I have the crash logs but they're huge, so I'm not so sure if I should post them. Thanks everyone!
PS. I can open DMG files for her using MagicISO (I'm on a PC), but it's a bit of a pain transferring those larger files to her.

What files did you try deleting? If you don't know what a file does or why you're messing around with it, you shouldn't; that's just asking for trouble.
Let's assume for the moment that you have a corrupted preferences file. To find out, go to Users/Library/Preferences and locate the com.apple.DiskUtility.plist file and drag it to the Desktop. Now relaunch Disk Utility and see if the problem continues. If not, then use Disk Utility to Repair Permissions, and then you can Trash the file on your Desktop.
You should also use your OS X install disc to boot the system and use Disk Utility to Repair Disk, to see if there are any problems. If it reports any errors that it can fix, keep running it until no more are reported.
If there's an error that it cannot fix, stop using your system immediately and make a backup of everything; then get a disk utility such as DiskWarrior to see if it can fix your drive. If your drive cannot be repaired, you will need to replace the internal drive and restore from your backup (if you have one).
    Hope this helps,

  • .DMG files won't mount on desktop nor will my iPods

My iPod classic won't mount on my desktop, nor can I get the iTunes .dmg file (or any .dmg file for that matter) to mount on my desktop. My iPod has worked fine for years. Now it won't mount on my desktop but it'll charge just fine. It used to automatically launch iTunes when I plugged it into the USB port, but now it won't. And when I launch iTunes, iTunes doesn't recognize it at all so I can't sync. I've tried restarting my computer, upgrading iTunes, switching USB ports and restoring my iPod. Still nothing. I don't think the problem is with my iPod, I think it's my computer. Because I just bought a brand new iPod Shuffle yesterday (because I thought my old iPod was dead) and the brand new Shuffle won't mount on my desktop either and won't automatically launch iTunes and iTunes doesn't recognize it at all to sync it. (I checked and my iTunes is up-to-date.)

  • .dmg files won't mount

Ever snce installing 10.4.6 (I think) .dmg files downloaded with Safari (or Firefox) will not mount. If I double click the .dmg on the desktop, it goes away, does nothing and after a long time comes back with a dialogue box (I have never seen before) saying "Warning The following disk images failed to mount Reason: Device not configured"
    Any ideas??!!

Have you got another harddrive or second partition to
    which you can install OSX?
Nope. That's why I'm so unhappy.
Or try restarting and holding the cmd key ("apple"
key) and the s together until the system boots up in
UNIX - other keyboard short cuts here:
I already did a safe reboot. No change. I also tried using my other account on the Mac - no difference.
and run "f@*ed disk", well properly the "fsck"
    command from that UNIX
    prompt. See
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
    for more advice
I ran DiskUtility (both Repair Permissions and, from the install disk, Repair Disk), the disk is fine. The failure to mount, Device not configured issue remains.
I also used MainMenu to do the Daily, Weekly, and Monthly scripts. I haven't started cleaning cache files yet, with the exception of com.apple.kernelcaches and Extensions.kextcache, as recommended in another post.
I'm leaving the reinstall option until I have more time, and I'll just be mad at Apple for the poor update in the meantime.

  • Dmg files won't mount, Disk Utility/Toast won't launch?

    Hi folks,
I've just joined your fine community in search of help with my problem that I see on Google pops up on boards frequently... but no suggestions have helped me yet...
In a nutshell, if I download any dmg file, eg. Apple updaters, they won't open - the error dialogue is something like "failed to open, no mountable file system". This seems to be an underlying general error, as I also can't launch disk applications like Disk Utility and Toast. They just bounce in the dock and then quit.
    I have:
    - rerun the 10.4.4 combo installer
    - done /sbin/fsck -yf at startup - all reported ok
    - booted from and run Disk Warrior - all reported ok
    - booted from and run Techtool Pro - all reported ok
    - switched to another user account.
And the problem with dmg and Disk Utility/Toast persists! In all other respects, the Powerbook G3 (576mb/80gb) is running fine (apparently).
    Hope someone can help

I just went thru a simular problem. A couple of things to try.
Boot of your install disk and ignor the install window and open disk utility from the menu at the top. you are running off the o/s on the disk an not the hard drive. You can repair permissions and the Hard drive because you are now working off a different filesystem.
If that doesn't work do a rinstall from the install disk but when you get to the window that has an "options" button select it (you may have to) and instead of doing a full install. Uncheck all boxes. This way it does not reinstall fonts etc.
You will not lose any files or programs or have to reinstall them. You might have to reinstall devices that have special drivers like printers that came with an install disk etc.
You will revert back to the origional ver like 10.4.1. just go to apple update and let it do its thing.
    Good luck

  • Dmg downloads won't mount

Trying to update some software and I'm finding that dmg files won't mount.
The dmg files work on another computer running the same version of OSX.
I don't get the standard warning telling me that I may be downloading an application.
Disk utility won't verify it because it won't mount.
I did run permissions and rebuild Launch services database with ONYX but the problem persists.
I can network the other computer and manage the dmg and update from there but I need to fix this.
    Any advice?

cheers Ted but this doesn't work for me - see my terminal window contents

  • How do I repair a damaged dmg that won't mount and Dick Utility can't repair?

Apple Care gave me wrong instructions on how to create a disc image of my internal HD then erased it. Now I have a .dmg that has the same gigs as the HD but won't mount and Disk Utility can't repair. Tried to recover files with Data Rescue 3 but that isn't going so hot. Any suggestions?
    Thank you

I guess that it's a moot point to ask if you didn't test the dmg before you erased the drive. Do you have a Time Machine or other type of backup?
If not, it's a hard lesson to learn, but I would guess that unless you are willing to pay for expensive outside data recovery service, all is lost and you are starting over.

  • .dmg's won't mount or create disk image

I'm using a 17" powerbook. I've had no issues in the past year of ownership with downloads (from Apple site or other). Recently, when I attempt to download a .dmg, the image won't appear on the desktop, however it did download. The download file show's it did download but failed to mount. The desktop shows the failed download as shaded out.
I am not using any download accelerator or similar product. This problem appears to have started with my most recent system software update from Apple.
    Help and suggestions are appreciated.
PS - this only seems to apply to .dmg's

Do you still have some older dmg files that you can check? Will one that worked in the past still work? When you do GetInfo under the section for "Open with" is the application specified as DiskImageMounter? If not, is that application in the drop down list and can you select it? Finally, do you have the application here:
    "/System/Library/CoreServices/DiskImageMounter.app"
If the application for mounting dmg files is there and you can choose it to open the dmg files, or it is already listed as the choice, you might try using Disk Utility to repair permissions. If the older dmg files work correctly, but the new one doesn't, then something is wrong with the new downloads.

  • CDs and dmg files failing to mount on an eMac; any suggestions?

    Dear all,
I have not posted here before and hope someone can assist please; I'm a long-time Apple user, having started with the Apple II and currently owning an iMac G5 and PowerBook G4.
Having obtained a G4 eMac, I discovered a serious software/hardware for which I can't find a solution. It is running OS X.2.8 which has an issue mounting .dmg and CDs. When I attempt to mount .dmg files, it reports the error message:
"FILE NAME failed to mount due to error 95. (no mountable file systems)"
All CDs will not appear on the desktop with the exception of the Apple Hardware Test CD. They do appear through Disk Utility but can't be mounted. I have tried apps such as "Mount" without success.
    Apple has recognised this problem:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106345
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107288
but none of the suggested remedies have worked for me. Various forums suggest solutions, a summary of which may be found here:
    http://www.macattorney.com/tutorial.html#anchor-diskimage
    but none worked.
I have also tried holding the "c" key with the Install CD but it won't mount.
Any suggestions please? I can boot with System 9 - as a last resort would it be possible to then delete key files from the OS X's "System" folder, following which I might be able to boot from the "Install" CD?
    Many thanks,
    Peter

They sometimes say you're better helping yourself!
I seem to have solved this after many hours of experimentation. I decided to hook up my iMac G5 (running 10.4.11) via a firewire cable. Having started the iMac, I followed the instructions for a target disk, connected the cable and fired up the eMac (hold "T" etc). Within minutes the eMac with its inserted CD could be seen on my iMac's desktop. However, I now needed to see if it worked the other way around - if I could somehow boot up with the eMac and use the iMac as the target disk, putting the CD into the iMac.
The eMac read the iMac's drive but unfortunately I could not see the inserted CD. Having then turned off the iMac, I left the firewire cable plugged in and then inserted the eMac's Install disk - to my great surprise the Install disk suddenly appeared on the eMac's desktop for the first time! I clicked the Installer which then announced it would start up from the CD. It duly did - and I managed to revert back to System 10.2, rather than the problematic Apple upgrade 10.2.8 which had been installed (and apparently caused the problems).
I'm trying to obtain a copy of 10.3 Panther, simply to run the excellent Elgato EyeTV.
    Fingers crossed!
    PJD.

  • Downloaded new Parrallels, dmg file will not mount?

I am trying to upgrade my parrallels, since they came out with a newer version. I have the dmg file but it will not mount, it says "not recognized"
Do I have to remove the older version first?
    anyone know what is wrong?
Also, what kind of a fire wire do you need to connect two Macs together so that you can migrate the software over?
Do you need a fire wire with the same ends?

The original DMG posted on the Parallels site would not mount. If you download it now it will work ok.
As far as firewire you use a firewire 400 or 800 depending on your old machine. It is probably best that you use one with the same ends. Less of a chance of data failure.

  • .dmg files will not mount

i just bought a new intel imac. i've been having trouble with dmg files: when i open them wa warging comes up that says that the disk image failed to mount and the reason it gives is either codec overrun or not recognized. Every once in a while a file will work properly, but the vast majority of the time there is an error. The files that im trying to install are mostly updates; quicktime and an os x update. i was wondering if anyone else has had this problem and knows how to fix it.
    thanks

    Hi
I'm not sure what the answer to your problem is, but having also just purchased a new intel imac, I use software update. I know there is also the comboupdate (not that I really understand what that's all about!) but have to admit to having no problems using the Software Update option with my imac. No dmg's need mounting and (touch wood) everything has installed like a dream - so far!
BTW what's "wa warging" (shown in your message)?

  • .dmg file won't open, invalid checksum

    Hi there -
I'm downloading the CS6 Master Collection trial via the Adobe Download Assistant onto a Mac running OS 10.7.4. When I try to open the .dmg file, I get the warning:
The following disk images couldn't be opened
    MasterCollection_CS6_LS16.dmg, invalid checksum
If this helps, the download bar in the Assistant says "Extracting... this may take a while." It's been like that for about three hours.
Do I need to re-download? It took ~24hrs, so if I don't have to, I'd rather not.
    Thanks!

I tried to do that as I first downloaded it from Firefox, then Safari, like you said to, but I got a message saying that "This product is already in the queue and will be not be added (error 105). If you believe you have received this message in error, you can restart Adobe Download Assistant and try to add the product again".
I have already tried this four times, I even "Force Quit" ADA to clear the queue, but whenever I click on the download button on the Adobe website, I keep getting the same message.
This only started because I had the same error as the original post.

  • My iBook G4's HD won't mount on startup

    Hi all,
First time problems with my iBook G4, and therefore, first time post here.
It all started earlier today when Firefox crashed and I rebooted in order to get it (Firefox) to reopen. When the iBook restarted, it kept hanging on a blue screen after the Apple logo/spinning wheel process.
After a few hard reboots, it eventually just began to come up with the 'Please restart your computer' message in four different languages, everytime I rebooted.
I then inserted my OS X CD to run the disk utility to repair any issues. Upon using the Frist Aid repair disk option, one error was found. "Invalid Volume Header" comes up in red text when repairing begins, but I have no idea what this means. After Repairing and Verifying the HD, I then rebooted again, to no avail. The restart computer message again. I ran disk repair again and it still found the same error and fixed it again. It seems that whenever the HD attempts to mount, the error re-appears.
I'm not sure what to do at this point. After running startup in Verbose mode, this is what comes up:
    Kernel version:
    Darwin Kernel Version 8.6.0: Tue Mar 7 1658:48 PST 2006; root:xnu-792.6.70.obj~1/RELEASE_PPC
    panic: We are hanging here...
I attempted to just reinstall OS X, but when it comes to selecting the volume to install it too, there are none available. It's not recognizing my HD. I've been contemplating just reformatting the drive and doing a clean install of OS X, but I'm afraid this is what will happen when I try to install OS X, and I will have deleted all my files for no good reason.
My last resort is to just throw this out here and see if anyone can steer me in the right direction. Any help is greatly appreciated. Cheers!

    iBook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.6)

After trying diskwarrior and any other disk utility application you can find to repair the drive I think your best bet will be to back up your data and start from scratch.
Backup by using an external enclosure or usb->ide adapter if the HD will mount that way, or try mounting it in target disk mode with another firewire mac.
I would then zero the drive and reinstall OS X.
First though, see if diskwarrior helps.

  • Disk Image (.dmg) files no longer mount

Since updating to 10.4.9, I cannot mount disk image files. When I double click on them, I get an error dialog from Finder which reads, 'The Following disk images failed to mount.' Reason: 'Device not configured.' I suspect that some essential software, 'Disk Copy' and/or 'Diskimagemounter' did not, for one reason or another install with the rest of the update. My computer did crash when the update was almost complete, but after a restart, everything seemed to work OK, except for not being able to mount disk images, which in this age of downloadable software basically makes your Mac dead in the water. Any solutions, suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all!

Your Mac crashed before the update installation process was complete and before the prompt to restart?
If so - Houston, we have a problem. ;~)
Did you check your boot volume for any directory problems with Disk First Aid repair via Disk Utility when booted from your Tiger install disc immediately before the install and did you quit all running applications before the install?
Regardless and as a first step, check this link for system troubleshooting procedures and when doing so, follow all steps/instructions in the order provided.
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/repairprocess.html
Test if this resolves the mount disk images problem since you should download the 10.4.9 Combo Update and re-install 10.4.9 since your Mac crashed before the install was 100% complete.
