  • IBook G3 Dual USB Not Finding Server With Wireless Internet

I have an iBook G3 Dual USB that has been working fine, then all of a sudden we could no longer get web sites to come up. It keeps saying server not found. I am using a Linksy wireless router and have cable internet.
I also have a desktop Mac that can still get on the net ok. It is plugged into the router by hardline. I unplugged the ethernet cable from the desktop Mac and plugged it into the iBook and still can not get online.
Anyone have any suggestions why I can no longer get on the net? We have not changed any settings. One minute it was fine, the next nothing.
When I go into AirPort, it is showing a strong signal.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,

When I replied to your latest post you had indicated that you were still having problems getting on the Internet through a hard line. I see that that has changed.
Given the new data I think you are on the right path. If you zapped your PRAM and everthing is fine then disregard the rest of this message.
If things still don't work right...
New suggestion. Check the router and be sure the antennaes are secured to the back of the router and visually check them for signs of damage. If all looks good then cycle the router (if you have not done so already) and see if that helps. Its a long shot, but its worth a try.
If you are still having problems then taking the iBook to work and seeing if you can gain access to the Internet through your wireless network is a good idea (as long as the network is open). If you can get on-line then the router at home is suspect. If not then the card is suspect.
One last suggestion for the Mac. If you can, use another Airport card in your iBook. If you can get on-line with a different card then you know there is a problem with the other card and not the router. If you are still have problems getting on-line with a differemt card then getting another router may solve the issue.

  • IBook G3 Dual USB Not Finding Server

I just did a full clean restore for disk ... I'm now trying to connect to the internet via Ethernet . I'm getting error message " The specified server could not be found" , The system defaults to Explorer (5.1) which I'm not familiar with . I check my network and it show built in ethernet and using DHCP. The only think I didn't do was setting up emil .
    What I'm I missing !

Some of the earliest (500 MHz, CD-ROM only) ones had only 64 MB.
I would recommend maximizing the RAM with a 512 MB RAM module.

  • Ibook g3 Dual usb 800Mhz 256MB 30GB video problem

I have a Ibook g3 Dual usb 800Mhz 256MB 30GB and I put Mac OS X 10.2 on there and the screen is really small its running at 640/480 and i tired making it 1024/768 but the option is not there. Do I need drivers or something or do i need a update. I dont know anything about a apple computer im a windows user and I am thinking on changing over and was going to try out this ibook and it had no OS so I looked it up and it said came with Mac os x 10.2 so I put that on there and you know the rest.

$50 is a pretty good price.

Make sure you get the full retail version (black disc) and not a system-specific (gray disc) set.
If you decide on Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger), you are likely going to have to maximize the RAM because 256 MB is the bare minimum, and it will be slow.
I stuck with Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther) for my iBook G3 800 MHz and bought an iBook G4 when I wanted to upgrade to Tiger.
    Good luck.

  • Old PowerBook 1400 charger power iBook G3 Dual USB?

I ordered an iBook G3 Dual USB (the white one, not the clamshell iBook) but I only have a 45W PowerBook 1400 power adapter. Will this power the 500MHz system?

It would, except the adapter tip won't fit in the power socket of the iBook. You will need a newer adapter with a smaller tip to fit the iBook G3 (Dual USB).
If it doesn't come with an adapter, here are some possible sources for the right adapter, including some less expensive third-party adapters:

    http://www.teksale.com/laptops/laptopparts/listings/apple-ac-adapter-g4.htm
It doesn't matter whether it's a 45 or 65 watt adapter; either will work. (The 65 watt is needed for newer PowerBooks. It won't hurt an iBook to use a 65 watt adapter with it, even though they originally came with a 45 watt model.)

  • IBook G3 Dual USB won't completely boot

I have an iBook G3 Dual USB 500 mhz. I went to boot it up the other day, i heard the boot sound, saw the initial grayish screen with the apple logo. then it went to a tanish screen with the folder with a question mark, then the folder with the mac face. and it continued to go back and forth with those two icons. I thought it was the hard drive so i replaced it with a good one. But it still does the same thing.
If i try booting while holding the option key,the blue screen that comes up for the boot source comes up. It identifies the hard drive, and if there's an install disc in the drive, it reads that as well. If i try booting from either location, it just refreshes the pages.
Or if i holding the "c" button down while booting, it goes to the screen with the ? folder and the mac face folder.
    Any suggestions?

If it won't boot from a known good disk, then it's likely that there's been a hardware failure, probably the logic board. You can try resetting the PMU, via the instructions in this document:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1431
and see if that makes any difference, though it's a long shot. If that fails, then your iBook has probably gone to the "great beyond".
    Regards.

I have an iBook with Dual USB that won't fully turn on. it flashes a "?" and the Mac face symbol in a folder i the middle of the screen. How can I trouble shoot?

Restart with the Option key held down and see if the internal drive appears.
If it does, click on it, press Enter, and then change the setting in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences or the Startup Disk control panel.
If it doesn't, insert a Mac OS install CD or DVD and use the Disk Utility or Disk First Aid to repair the internal drive. If there aren't any problems, install an OS onto it.

  • IBook G3 Dual USB  Line In Screen

    Hello,
I have a white iBook G3 Dual USB, OS 10.3.9, 320 Megs of Ram. Recently a vertical line showed up in the middle of the screen and it won't go away. It has been running fine. Anyone have any ideas or suggestion as to what may be causing this, do I need to worry? The only thing I have added is an internal CD burner/DVD player, which has been working ok. This is a used machine.

    fancz81,
Recently a vertical line showed up in the middle of the screen and it won't go away.> Anyone have any ideas or suggestion as to what may be causing this, do I need to worry?
Is it a hard line, running vertically? like one pixel wide?
What does it mean that the line is there?
The display array driver on the iBook LCD is attached at the top. Sometimes it will detach from impact, heat or age. This will cause one or more line(s) to go bad. Sometimes you can make it go away by flexing the display but I have never been able to fix this problem (I have made it worse). Only changing the display.

  • Ibook G3 (dual usb) only starts following PMU reset

I have a dual usb ibook G3 which seems to be failing.
Recently it began taking longer and longer to start-up... ending up with taking 15-20mins to progress through the various screens.
I ran the disk utility, re-set the PRAM, ran the apple hardware test (all fine), repaired permissions, and re-set the PMU - nothing seemed to improve the situation. I finally did an archive/reinstall of OSX (10.3.9). For a week or two the computer started up normally but now it gets stuck either on the inital plain grey screen or at the next Apple screen.
Now the ibook will now only start following a re-set of the PMU (depression of the hard reset button). The battery on this machine has not held charge for several years - and I am now running the machine without the defunct battery in place.
Any suggestions on what is wrong and how to fix it?! Once the machine has started it runs well and has no problem.
    Many thanks.

After you did the Archive and Install did you remember to delete the Previous System(s) folder which would have been created when you did the Archive and Install?
You can see if a little hard drive maintenance will help. Try booting into Safe Mode. This will take quite awhile longer than a normal startup because it does a file check and repair of the hard disk.
You will see your normal desktop. Once completely started up in Safe Mode, restart normally, and go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Click on the top hard drive icon in the left sidebar and note the S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom right of the pane. What does it say?
Select the named boot volume in the left sidebar ("Macintosh HD" unless you've renamed it). What is the hard drive capacity and how much space remains available on it? Repair permissions on it.
See if a little hard drive maintenance helps things out.

  • Is iBook G3 (Dual USB) Internal Hard Drive Replaceable?

The internal hard drive capacity on my iBook G3 700 (Dual USB) is 20 GB. Is it possible to swap that out in favor of a newer larger-capacity, internal hard drive? Or are these internal hard drives not upgradeable? Thanks in advance for your replies!
    iBook G3 700 (Dual USB)   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Apple does not consider the hard drive to be user-upgradeable. Some people have done it themselves, but it's very complicated. You have to dismantle the iBook.
Make sure that it is a SuperSlim (or 9.5 mm high) drive, if you are going to try to do it yourself. Mention has been made of incompatibility with some Toshiba drives, so it would be wise to keep that in mind.
Online instructions (in case you want to try to do it yourself):
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/50.12.0.html
    http://www.powerbooktech.com/knowledge,name-Hard-Drive,type-6.htm
Some places that will do it for you:
    MacService
    DT & T Computer Services
    MCE Technologies
Or maybe you'd rather put that money toward a new MacBook? Apple has made the MacBook so that the hard drive is easily upgraded by the user when that 60 GB (or bigger) hard drive starts feeling as cramped as your 20 GB one does now.
If you can afford to upgrade, it is a marvelous computer. I'm looking hard, myself.

  • HD needs repairing but optical drive NOT reading discs.

My problem is this: I have a June 2010 21.5" iMac which is out of warranty.   Disk utility says my HD needs repairing.  No problem, I have the original install DVD.   Trouble is my DVD drive has suddenly stopped reading discs! I rand Apple tech support for help and I asked them if I could simply buy a usb external DVD drive and re-install that way? Since I will also have to reinstall from DVD; Logic and Pro-Tools.   He said no!   Consequently I'm booked in for repair next week at an Apple store.
Is that a way of Apple making money and I CAN actually repair the HD via an external usb hard drive??  Did he convince me to take it to an Apple store so they gain cash from me that way?
Do I take it in for repair?  The Apple Tech Support guy gave me no clue as to how much this is going to cost.
Or don't take for repair and buy an external usb DVD drive?
I struggle with computers at the best of times!
    Any help greatly appreciated.

I've used ancient Compaq "Multi-bay" external drives and a variety of other random-vendor external USB drives with Apple laptops and Apple servers, and they've worked.  In several cases, I was using the old Compaq drives because the integrated DVD drivers were dusty or had failed — DVD drives of all sorts can and do fail, Apple, third-party and otherwise — and the Compaq drives were handy.  That Compaq Multi-bay drive booted an Apple Xserve Intel box with a bad slot-loader, too.
If one drive fails, debugging suggests trying a different drive.
If you don't want to be concerned about compatibility, order one of those (not cheap) Apple external DVD drives.  I now have a couple of those around, and they work.
It's quite true that newer Apple laptops don't have DVD drives, though most of these systems offer a recovery partition on the disk, the ability to create external recovery partitions on the device of your choice, newer ones have Internet-based recovery if you're lacking a drive (booting from Apple's servers via the Internet), and the Mac boxes I've tried will boot from various random USB devices including the old other-vendor DVD drives, and from the Apple external DVD drives.  With another Mac with a compatible wiring connection (Thunderbolt and cable on newer Mac systems, and FireWire and cable with a pair of older Mac systems), Target Disk Mode (TDM) can be used.  The installations can also be copied to other hard disks, and it's also possible to network-boot most any Mac system, if you have a server around.  And there's also the remote disk installations that some Mac systems can offer.   Put another way, there are various and good alternatives to device-integrated DVD drives.
DVD is an old and mechanical technology, and it's variously a flaky one.  Given a choice, I'd rather boot OS X off an external hard disk or solid state or flash device or via TDM, just because it's faster and more compact.  This because I'd rather not carry around the weight and volume of that DVD drive all the time, on the off chance I might sometime eventually need to recover.  But an external random DVD device does work, too.
As was mentioned else-thread, there is no special chip required in the drives.  Given the command set and status-level differences from drive to drive I've seen and given the failure rates I've witnessed with DVD and CD drives from all vendors including Apple, I wouldn't expect every drive to work, but I've seen nothing that Apple does here that would prevents a random drive from working.  And I've used random drives...

Upgraded to N95 8GB. So far so good, then !!!. Came back from hols to link with PC to find that the CD drive and DVD drive will not read the disc which came with the phone. PC will still read other discs but not the Nokia disc. What is the disc format and can I get what is on the disc elsewhere?

It's probably just a damaged disc. You can download the PC Suite software from www.nokia.com/pcsuite, as far as I know you can't get replacement CDs.
