Ibook G3, os X updates

hello; i recently had a crash and had to re-install os x to my old ibook G3---the version that i'm now using is os x.1.3 and i'm wondering if it's possible to upgrade and if so, do i have to pay to go beyond os x.1 updates? where might i download those archived versions?
thanks for your help.

Hi bob!
Here is some additional iinformation.
As Gulliver posted, Mac OS X Versions 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, and 10.4, are complete system upgrades that must be purchased.
But once an OS has been installed, the point upgrades, such as 10.1.x to 10.1.5 (Final) 10.2.x to 10.2.8 (Final), 10.3.x to 10.3.9 (Final), and 10.4.x to 10.4.9 (Pending), can be downloaded for free.
Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
Jaguar and Panther, are no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store, as Tiger 10.4.x is the most up to date OS.
If you know what to look for, Jaguar Full Retail CDs, a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can also be purchased rather inexpensively, at some additional online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, FastMac, etc. And <a href="<a href="http://www.applerescue.com/">AppleRescue, as Gulliver also posted.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Jaguar and Panther are only on CDs, not DVDs.
Unless purchased from AppleRescue, the discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade on them.
Additional info in these links.

What's A Computer Specific Mac OS X Release
Software Update, Upgrade: What's The Difference?
Before upgrading to any OS X version, above Puma 10.1.x, check to see if your Mac needs a Firmware Update.
If one is required, you must start the computer from a Mac OS 8 or Mac OS 9 System Folder on the computer's hard disk, not from a CD, in order to install it.
Once Jaguar 10.2.x is installed, you can use the 10.2.8 Combo Update,
or if Panther 10.3.x is installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the final version of either OS.
If your Mac meets the Tiger System Requirements, you could also consider installing that, and then use the PPC 10.4.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the current version.
Jaguar System Requirements
-Power Mac G3 or G4, iMac, eMac, PowerBook G3 or G4, or iBook computer
-128MB of physical RAM
-Supports all video cards shipped by Apple on Mac OS X-compatible systems. Quartz Extreme functionality is supported by the following video cards: NVIDIA GeForce2 MX, GeForce3, GeForce4 MX, or GeForce4 Ti; Any AGP-based ATI RADEON card. A minimum of 16MB VRAM is required.
-QuickTime Pro functionality requires a QuickTime 6 Pro key. The QuickTime 5 Pro key will not work after this software is installed.
-DVD Player requires a DVD-ROM equipped Macintosh with built-in FireWire.
Panther System Requirements
Additional Panther System Requirements
Additionally, "Tiger ships on a DVD, but if your Mac doesn’t have a built-in DVD-ROM player, you’ll need CD media. When you buy Mac OS X Tiger, you qualify to purchase Tiger CDs for only $9.95."

Orders must be mailed by June 22, 2007.

ibook stopped transferring images via image capture. last month it worked. i hav an old ibook and i cannot update to newest itunes. which is fine. however, i need the image capture to take photos off my iphone 5. no, i dont want to use i cloud. i would actually like to just plug it in to the usb drive the old fashioned way

I don't believe the iOS7 update was the cause for your issue. I have three devices all updated and they all show the Import To drop menu in Image Capture as shown below.

After I updated to iOS7.1, I tried to email a 1-page document in iBooks, without success! When you click on the email, etc icon, what comes up is ONLY THE WORD OPTION IS "PRINT"! When you click on PRINT, the typical Generic Print picture. There is No other options available in iBooks to share anything to anywhere.

  • Is there a way to re-install the bookcase version of ibooks?  I stupidly updated today and regret it.

Is there a way to re-install the bookcase version of ibooks?  I stupidly updated today and regret it.

I wanted to keep the old version and updated it by accident too. After a few days I forgot there was a old version.

  • Can't open Preview/Calendar/App store/iBooks/Terminal/Mail after updated to Mavericks

After I updated to Mavericks, I can not open Preview, Dictionary, App Store, iBooks, Keynotes, Photobooth, Quicktime, Contact, Calender, etc...
Mail keeps crashing everything I opened it.
iTunes and Safari is still working. Can someone tell me what's happening and how to solve my problem? Thanks a lot!
BTW, I remeber this symptom happened after I used Cleanmymac.

Evi, I have the same problem. When I first updated to Mavericks, everything is OK, but I use Cleanmymac too, It is may be because of Cleanmymac, it cleaned about 1G files.
Now I can not open App Store, how can I download and reinstall Mavericks?

  • PDF won't open in iBooks after latest software update

I have a large pdf file (biology textbook) that I would read on my iPad. It worked flawlessly until the latest software update (4.3.1). Now I can only see the first page and it only shows page 1 of 1, even though it is taking up all 450MB of space. I can't see any other pages and they aren't even shown at the bottom of the screen in iBooks. I tried deleting the file from iTunes and resyncing it. I also tried a full restore of my entire iPad and that didn't work. It was working fine before the software update so I don't know what to do. Thanks

I just updated to the latest update 4.3.2 and it works fine! Apparently something in the 4.3.1 update caused it to not work.

  • IBooks Author and Software Update Service

iBooks Author is not included in the Software Update Service list of available downloads. Does anyone know how to add as an available update within OS X Server?
It doesn't seem like the update service has iBooks Author in it's update catalog.

    Hi
You enter the server's hostname or fully qualified domain name as defined in whatever you're using for providing DNS Resolution for your network. If you want to know the Server's hostname launch Terminal on the Server itself and issue "hostname" without the quotes. If we use server.theschool.sch.uk as an example the url would look like this:
    http://server.theschool.sch.uk:8088/index-leopard-snowleopard.merged-1.sucatalog
    Does this help?
The servername.local refers to the Server's Bonjour name. Bonjour names don't resolve to IP addresses.

  • Can't open my book in progress (an ibooks author file) after updating to ibooks author v1.1. Help!

I've been working on an ibook in author now for 2 months. I've had some upds and downs with the format, but finally have a product that's close to finished. I updated my ibooks author software to 1.1 yesterday and now I can't open my file. Please help!!!!

The only people who can read your book in .ibooks format are people with an iPad, and an iPad cannot read a dvd.  So you should probably export it as .pdf.

  • Will I lose my iBooks data if I update to IOS 7 over the air

Last time I updated I lost all my iBooks and other date, including pdf files and had to recover from my iMac.
I'm many miles from my computer. Will I lose them again or is it safe to update?

If anyone is interested, I bit the bullet and upgraded and all my books and documents remained.
    Hallelujah.

  • IBooks not displaying since updating to OS 6

Since updating to OS6, I have had a few issues with my phone.
This one involves my iBooks.  Severa of my books are displaying the following error message in a red box when I try to open them:
"This page contains the following erors:
error on line 1 at column 1: Document is empty error on line 1 at column 1: Encoding error
Below is a rendering of the page up to the first error.
And there is nothing below the box.  Table of contents shows up, but if I select one, it goes to the same error.  It also looks like the book only recognizes 11 pages, all of them with the big red box and error message.
I want to get these restored, seeing as I paid for them (go figure, right?).
    Thanks!
    Andrew

I don't know if this has been solved yet, but I have an update to my original reply.
I too am having the same issue. I took my phone to work and hooked it up to the wi-fi and hit backup just to see if it would work. and guess what... it worked! So its apparently not a problem with iOS 6...
Still won't work at home, though it works for my sister and dad..
    Has anyone figured anything out?

  • Ibook g3/900 possible updates

First, let me start off by saying I'm a new mac user (switched over from pc after replacing the hard drive in this very ibook). This means that Im extremely mac illiterate. I reformatted and am running mac os X 10.2.8, so software wise Im very limited.
Basically, I'm looking to do some upgrading mainly to the OS and the Ram.
I would like to run Tiger 10.4, but can seem to find a handle on where I can get it from without being charged an arm and leg. Apple used to offer it online at a special price for students (which I am) but I can no longer find the link. Anyone know if they would still sell it via hotline to me @ the student price??? Or where I can find a 10.4 disk without paying $140???
As for RAM does it really matter which brand... I've seen mostly OWC and Crucial recommended. Would "cheap" value ram be a bad idea??? Id like to buy some cheap as possible. As long as it is pc100/pc 133 SODIMM does branding make that big of a difference. And finally will the max 640 RAM keep Tiger running relatively smoothly?
Because Im limited in the amount of money I can spend on upgrades, if I am unable to find a cheaper Tiger disk, Im thinking of dual booting linux. Anyone out there have any recs on which distribution that would work best.
Thanks all... its good to finally be part of the mac crowd

I just updated my iBook to Tiger a couple of days ago and it hasn't fried it yet(!)
In fact it runs very smooth and even seems to be generally quicker than under Panther.
I've bought from Crucial in the past and would recommend them for RAM - upgrading to 640MB is definitely worth it. Just use their drop down menus on their website to choose your model of iBook and it'll give you options for compatible RAM.
Your options for buying Tiger are probably restricted to ebay etc. I was told Apple weren't selling it anymore by a guy in the Apple Store when I inquired a few weeks ago, however someone on another thread said you can buy a copy if you phone them.

  • IBooks crashing consistently--no update available

The books in my library open just fine, but it am unable to buy books. If I search for a book or author, the app freezes, will not navigate, must force quit. The only way I have discovered to restore its functionality is to power down the iPad and restart. Then it will work briefly, if I go straight to the store and download. After reading in my personal library awhile, the store will again crash on load, and I have to start over, powering down, etc.
Have looked for updates, none available. I am running iOS 7.0.6.
Is there another app that works better for buying bad reading books? Very frustrating.

Thanks. I did try closing all apps and then doing a hard reset. So far, so good.
But your suggestion about the Kindle reader is a great one. I moved to iPad from years of Kindle, and for some reason did not think to bring the app along with me. It would be nice to use the app built right into iPad, but I guess a dependable work-around is preferable to a consistently crashing iBooks. I see a number of posts here and there with the same problem. Surprising that Apple hasn't released an update to fix such a major bug.

  • IBooks library vanished after update

After updating my iOS to the latest version recently, I was dismayed to find everything gone from my iBooks library. Does anyone know if Apple is going to bother to remedy this unpleasant surprise for future updates?
I recommend backing up your pdf books by opening them in Adobe reader or Kindle reader for iPad to make sure important texts aren't lost.

Get your terminology straight ... No - if you did what KP suggested - according to your response - you reset the iPad - you did not restart it. I suggested a restart - and a sync again.
    Two different things ...
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
You could try quitting all apps and then restart and try again.
Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the apps. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

  • Individual update for an iBook purchase not allowing update

I recently purchased an iBook (Wheelmen) on my iPad using iBooks in iOS 7.1 and shortly after Ian update to the book came out. I downloaded the update and now a second update has shown up in my purchased section of my books account. I tried downloading it but it won't allow me to select the update to the book.
I tried a power cycle, tried shutting iPad on/off, logged out and back in with my Apple ID but update still shows and won't allow me to select and update. It just shows downloaded but still shows an update for it.
Could there be a second update or am I just not able to update it again?
Any thoughts how to clear the update or update if in fact it is a second update to the book?
    Thanks.

If there's no important data, delete and re-install.

  • IBooks 1.1.1 update erases / Deletes / Hides all books on my iPad

I just upgraded to iBooks 1.1.1 on my ipad running 3.2.1
After the upgrade, All my books and pdfs are "missing" (I see an empty shelf)
This happened to me when I upgraded from 1.0 to 1.1 as well.
interestingly, When I connect the iPad to the Mac, itunes shows the thing having all the books on.
If I drag a single book from the books view in iTunes back to the iPad, it does a very quick sync, then all books and pdf's re-appear on the ipad.
Has anyone else seen this issue? (It upgraded on my phone just fine)

We are looking into this issue. Can you answer the following questions:
    1. How many books were on the device?
    2. If "a bunch", how long did you wait before you felt the books were lost?
    3. Do you remember how many epubs? How many PDF's?
    4. Does iTunes-sync see the books as still on the device? (the space meter along the bottom of the Summary Pane).
    5. Does adding (or removing) a book through iTunes Sync restore the books to the shelf view?
Can you also tell me what device / OS you are using? Thanks.
    Answers:
    Q1: 156
    Q2: ---
Q3: 116 were epubs, an additional 40 PDFs
    Q4: Yes
    Q5: Yes
MBP and an iPad - all with latest updates.
FWIW, the books came back on their own after I restarted my iPad. Last time they didn't until I re-synced. Hope that helps.
