IBook G3 Power/charge problem

I have a ibook G3. It doesn't charge properly (taking two days to charge to 6% which drains in minutes when turned on)
I have reset the PMU with the little button on the side. I have also tried plugging in the power adaptor with and without the battery in place to see if I can use it that way but it makes no difference. I can see it recognises that a charger is plugged in (I've bought a new charger/adaptor thinking that may have been the problem but it makes no difference)it is just not utilising the power. What can I do?

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.

    Welcome to the forum.
    1. What is the model number of your notebook? (See How to find a product number or machine type and model?)
    2. What is the wattage of your AC charger? Look at the sticker for something like 20VDC 4.5A or 20VDC 3.25A. The first indicates a 90W charger and the second indicates 65W. It is possible that your system requires 90W but your charger supplies only 65W.
    3. Did this problem start recently?

Have the same issue -- Any luck finding information?
HP support claims they have not seen this problem before.
Looking at the internet -- That is clearly impossible.
Probably voltage regulation chip -- But I did not see anything that wasn't surface mount to replace.

  • Need Help..... power Charge Problem

My Ipad Mini Have Away Charge 80%-90% only Singe I Buy From The Shop......Why...

Not entirely sure what you mean, but if it's not charging above 80 or 90% then have you tried a reset to see if it charges (and/or the indicator updates) after the iPad has restarted ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Where can I find a power charger for my G3 ibook

Just broke my 4 year old g3 iBook power charger by walking into the cord and snapping it off at the power source. Where can I find a replacement power cord charger for this 750pc G3 iBook?

There are third party choices for an adapter, also:
    MCE Technologies
    http://www.madsonline.com/index.html?
    MacAlly adapter at Amazon.com
Micro Accessories adapter at Other World Computing
Apple's is the only one with the glowing ring to indicate charging status, though, and can be found here:
    http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?productLearnMore=M89 43LL/A
I believe the one from Other World Computing is one of the sturdiest of the lot. The MacAlly adapter's cord is a bit flimsier than the one from Other World Computing, but both are working fine on our iBooks. We haven't tried the pricier ones.

Try Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
If that doesn't help, try Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

  • MacBook Battery Charge Problem - With a Twist

I got a white MacBook in October to replace an ailing iBook. It ran fine for almost five months, with a slight twist that I've been reticent to come on here and ask about.
Problem #1: The battery charging had what I'd call frustrating behavior. The computer would not charge the battery unless I practically ran the battery down to nothing. Usually it wouldn't start charging until 20-30% charge. My old iBook would start charging at about 85%, so I just figured it was some failsafe that Apple was building in to the new system to improve long-term battery life. This frustration continued until today when...
Problem #2: I went to a coffee shop to do some work. I'd forgotten the night before that I hadn't let my battery run down enough to charge it, so the battery was at 35%. Okfine. I'll run it for a few minutes and then plug it in. I wait. 30%, 25%, 20% and whenever I plug it in to test, it won't charge. I run it all the way down to the point where the system automatically goes to sleep. The battery won't charge. I've reset all the things that can be reset, I've reseated the battery, I've turned it off and back on, I let it sleep for an extra amount of time to squeeze that extra bit out of the battery. No beans. The thing refuses to charge.
In system info, the battery information shows that it's completely dead (remaining power at zero across the board, not the negative numbers I've seen reported in other threads). The power information recognizes that it's a battery with 0% charge, but only says "Calculating until full..." Given that it won't charge, it's going to be calculating for a very long time. The battery flashes one light when I press the button.
I'm going to take it in to an authorized service whatsit on Monday, but in the meantime, what is it likely to be? I've seen answers ranging from bad battery to faulty motherboard. Is there any step I've overlooked to try before resorting to a trip to the store?
    Thanks in advance.
MacBook Core Duo White 2.0GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Yeah, if it says your battery is only at 18% of it's charge after just a few months, then there is definitely something wrong with it. They will probably give you a replacement battery, considering it is still under warranty. My iBook (2 Years Old) is down to 29% of it's original charge capacity, so I am in need of a new one myself :\
2 Years is what Apple says is the average life span of a laptop battery.

  • I am stumped over this iBook's power symptoms.

I have been buying broken iBooks and repairing them to pay for school for a while, and I have generally been able to diagnose and repair them with relative ease. I've come across a few tricky ones before, but I recently came across one that just has me completely baffled. It's an iBook G4, and has some sort of power issue that I'm hoping someone here can help me diagnose!
    Here's a simple list of the symptoms/things I've tried:
    - iBook will not start on AC power alone.
    - iBook will start with charged battery in and no AC power.
    - iBook will start with a completely drained batter (0%) and AC power plugged in and remain on for as long as it is connected and the battery is in.
    - iBook will not charge a battery.
    - DC-In board has been replaced twice and does not seem to be the problem.
    - Logic Board is fine. When the iBook is on via battery or battery/AC it works beautifully.
    - Resetting PRAM and PMU prove unsuccessful.
    - Tried 3 different AC Adapters (2 45W's and a 65W)
    - Tried 4 different batteries, all with >75% battery life left.
Frankly, I'm out of ideas. Is there some other piece of the power puzzle that I'm missing? I know the logic board is good, and I am 99% sure the DC-In board is fine. Basically, the iBook will not run off of AC Adapter or charge, but the DC-In board is fine. What should my next step be?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Erasing disks securely
If the computer came with discs - Start up from your install disc, go to Disk Utility and select the disk and click erase - to securely erase data click Security Options and Erase Free Space which will entirely wipe your disk, overwriting it with zeros so that no data is recoverable.

  • IBook will not charge

Hello I have a 1.2 ghz iBook G4 and it will not charge. When I plug it the light ring is a light amber instead of the usual dark amber when it is charging successfully. Is there anything I can do, I can not turn it on because the battery is dead.

These are the four most common possibilities when the battery will not charge (in the order of from most common to least common):
    (1) there is something wrong with your battery
    (2) there is something wrong with your power adapter
    (3) there is something wrong with your power input board (the part that contains the port where you plug in the adapter)
    (4) there is something wrong with your logic board
Have you tried resetting the PMU? A charging problem may certainly be corrected by performing that procedure.
Have you tried switching adapters with one you know is working to make certain it isn't your adapter? (My husband and I have, between us, worn out four of them.)
Your power input (DC-in) board (the part of the computer which houses the adapter port) may be going bad if it sometimes will charge the battery and sometimes won’t. Sometimes it will work intermittently before quitting entirely. When a DC-in board quits working, the computer will run fine from the battery, but won't run from the adapter, and the adapter will no longer charge the battery. To diagnose a bad DC-in board, you need to make sure it isn't the battery or the adapter at fault by swapping out first one and then the other, If it runs from a known good charged battery okay, but won't run from a known good adapter, then you are going to have to replace the power input board.
Usually, if it is a logic board problem, the iBook simply will not run from the battery. This happened to mine. The battery showed up in the battery status indicator. It was recognized by the computer and charged by the adapter (as shown by the battery status indicator). However, when I unplugged the adapter from the iBook, it was just like pulling the power cord from the wall on a desktop. The iBook immediately shutdown. Dead.
My husband’s problem was quite obviously the power input board because the adapter tip had broken off in the port. Often (and, sadly, in our case), this damages the power input board so that it no longer functions, necessitating replacement of the board as well as the broken adapter.
I hope something here gives you some ideas of what may be wrong in your case.

  • Macbook Pro 13 (Early 2011) Charging Problems

Recently I noticed that when I charge my macbook pro, the LED light on the magsafe would go green then orange to show that it is charging. However after a few minutes or seconds the orange LED light will go off (Stops Charging) and the whole process of charging starts again, green light then orange then nothing...
I already tried resetting the PRAM and SMU. I also tried using different wall sockets for charging and it yielded the same results. However, when i borrowed my friends mac charger, my MBP manage to charge without any problems. When he used my charger the charging problem also occurred.
So i decided to bring it to an Apple Authorized service provider sine they are no Apple Retail Stores in Thailand. I told the guy at the AASP that my charger was probably broken/faulty, but he said it was the receiver sensor of the macbook pro (The place where i connect the magsafe to my MBP ). He used a different charger (At the counter)and the LED lights when from Green, Orange then yellow and said the MBP needed to be sent to Singapore to be repaired and it would take 10 - 14 days. I said OK since my MBP was still in warranty and it would be free. Next day he called and said he fixed it by resetting something and that I could pick it up. At the AASP, the macbook pro didnt show any charging problems so i brought it home to charge.
Now it has the same charging problem as before...

Do you have another power adapter to try? If so, can you use the power adapter that came with this mac?
Do you have another MBP? If so can you use this power adapter on that MBP?
Are you using another pointing device or is it the one built right into the laptop? If you are using another pointing device try purchasing a new one or disconnecting or reconnecting or even try on another computer.
You might be only able to get buy for the next few month until you graduate until you can get your computer fixed. If all else fails go buy yourself a $8 mouse from a place, it will work until you can get this fixed... or buy apple mice if that is a big deal to you.
Here is one for only 3.18! http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Gear+Head-Computer+-+OM3800U+Mouse/3933383.p?id=1218 443155891&skuId=3933383
Or if you want the one I have used: (M515 @ home or HP Wired Mouse-- Its kind of old) This isn't the exact one but they discontinued that one: http://www.logitech.com/en-us/mice-pointers/mice/devices/mouse-m100 so for $10 you get a mouse and your computer works.

I am moving to South Africa from the US for a year and want to know if I can use the same power charger in South Africa and just but a socket adapter or do I need to get a new power charger for S.A.?

    Hi,
Nowadays laptop chargers can be used for normal electricity around the world (110V to 250V). All we need is a small plug adapter similar the the ones we use to travel overseas. Most electrical shops, travel agents and airports ... sell them.

  • ZEN VISION:M CHARGING PROBLEM - H

[color="#ff0000"]ZEN VISION:M MP3 PLAYER CHARGING PROBLEM?My MP3 player was charging perfectly for the first 4 weeks of its life with me. I usually charged using the USB port on my computer. When connected, the player would come to life and the CHARGING ICON would appear and flash until the unit was fully charged and the CHARGED ICON would come on. Worked well. Now when I connect the player to the computer, instead of the CHARGING ICON coming on, the unit immediately begins playing music or going to the last mode it was in before being shut down previous to connecting for charging.
I have tried a reset of the whole player but that did not make any difference. I?encounter the same problem when connecting the player to the car?charger/power adapter. Can anyone give me some assistance? Cure? Thanks,? David B.

  • HP DV6000 series laptop - Shut down immediately as soon as I connect the power Charger

    Hi,
I am using a hp dv6000 series laptop for last 2 years....  Accidentally, water fell on my laptop and then my laptop itself fell down from the table.
One the first day when I tried restarting it  there was no response ( No power LED no display nothing, no cpu fan etc ...)
I disassembled the laptop, cleaned the RAM hard disk, front bezel, keyboard. I used a hair dryer to dry out any of the moisture. My laptop then started showing some response ... now after 4 days .... it is working all fine except the display...
    The problem is :
    1. The Laptop backlight is not working... (but I can see the display with a external flashlight pointed to screen)
    2. The laptop works fine on battery... but as soon as I connect the power charger... it immediatly shuts down.
Currently because of display problem... I am using the (RDP) windows remote desktop connection from an another laptop to access the desktop.... I logged on from another laptop and checked that all the internal harware parts are working fine.
Also, sometimes suddenly randomly the display backlight starts working fine and goes off randomly.
Please suggest. I seached all the online help but I have found no help on "Shut down immediately as soon as I connect the power Charger"...
    thanks.

It sounds like the LCD power inverter has been damaged and would need to be replaced.  As far as the AC adapter/battery issue, I'm not sure.  It sounds like you need to retire this notebook early.

  • Syncing and Charging Problem with 1st gen iPod nano

I purchased a 1st generation iPod nano via eBay about 3 months ago and have developed an interesting syncing and charging problem.  When I plug the nano to my iMac, frequently neither the computer nor iTunes will recognize it.  I have done "the five R's" with occasional success.  I've tried jiggling the cable in the computer port and sometimes it works in getting iTunes to recognize the nano, sometimes it doesn't.  Even when I am able to get iTunes to recognize the nano, I have frequently found that the nano hasn't charged up at all.  In fact, a couple of times I found it almost totally drained of power after having been connected to my computer.  Yes, I have the most recent version of iTunes installed on my iMac and my iMac, by the way, is relatively new - having been purchased in May of this year.  What is interesting is that I've taken my nano to work and it has absolutely no problem charging up on my Dell (yuk!).  For the record, I do not have iTunes installed on my work computer and I am not allowed to add any apps to my work computer without the consent of my supervisor.  The chances of getting iTunes installed on my Dell at work are pretty much nil.  Any suggestions on how I can fix the problem?

I bought a new USB dock connector and hoped, with fingers and toes crossed, that something positive would happen.  Sure enough, I was able to sync and recharge my old iPod nano.  I guess the original USB dock cable is on its last legs.  Not totally broken, but no longer reliable.  I consider my problem solved!    My thanks to everyone who took the time to read and try to solve my iPod problem.  I greatly appreciate it!
