IBook G3 screen going dim?

Hi,
My 12" iBook's screen has been misbehaving! This morning it flickered several times and went very dim to the point where i could only just see what was on the screen. I restarted, reset nvram etc but it was still the same. Later in the day it came back on but it only seems to be around half brightness although it occasionally goes as bright as it should it soon reverts back to dim. A quick google seems to point to the inverter board so i've picked one up off eBay, but i also notice there is a inverter lead, do i need to replace this as well?

Hey Mark,
Not sure which iBook you have but look here for the takeapart.
They're all pretty similar.

So if it just gets dim and you can see the video still most likely it's the inverter cable if not the inverter. If you move the display up and down and it flashes on and off then it's definitely the cable.
Check it particularly near the hinge point. You'll have to unwrap the metallic cloth like tape there. Check it carefully. Usually it shorts out or opens up. If it shorts badly it will take out a tiny SMT fuse on the logic board.

  • Help! screen goes dim, just the editing window

Hi there, I am running photoshop cs4 extended on windows 7 on  hp. once in a while my screen goes dim making editing difficult. My monitor is profiled and is fine. the only thing dim is the images on my first screen. I run two screens, when I pull PS over to  my other monitor it brightens up. So Its not in my file, and it isn't affecting photoshops menu bars or anything like that, and its only intermitent. the first screen is the profiled one as it  is much higher quality, the second screeen is only for tools and web browsing. In have checked  a lot of things and have no idea what causes this or any solution, any advice would be great.

Cannot possibly be, as for one it is a desktop computer that has no power management, and two the menu bars, tools and everything else stays the same brightness, it is only the editing window itself.
Thank you for trying, it is appreciated.

  • Screen goes dim when processor working - even when plugged to mains power.

Screen goes dim when processor working - even when plugged to mains power.
Whether I'm running 3D software or just surfing the net, the screen keeping fading/dimming and then recovering over a few seconds. No USB devices connected, mains power on - NOT IMPRESSED!
Any ideas - a hardware problem? Back to Mac?

If you go to System Preferences > Energy Saver, the is a checkbox under the "options" tab that says, "Automatically reduce the brightness of the display before display sleep." On my new MBP (10.5.1), this was "on" by default. Try unchecking it and see if it helps.

  • Ibook G4 screen remains dimmed

My iBook G4 screen remains dimmed as if it is about to go to sleep all the time, but in fact I am in the process of using it. Everything looks slightly darker than it is.

Hi again, try using the F2 button, it should make your screen brighter and the apple light on the back of your screen should light up too, then when your comp is inactive it will dim as usual, then when you use it it should go back to noraml brightness - or at least its worked for me! hope this is helpful

  • When I browse the net, the screen goes dim

I've had the phone about a month and am generally pleased, but as a novice, I can't figure out certain things.  One of them is that when I use the web browser, the screen goes dim (almost to the point of unreadability).  It doesn't seem to do this for any other activity that I can recall.   Anyone know how to fix this?

Thanks, I appreciate the response.  I got this worked out last night via Verizon phone support.  As you say, it was in the menu once I'd opend the browser by going to the lower left button on the phone, bringing up the menu.  I had not realized that if I scrolled through this menu, there were more options I wasn't seeing.  Silly me, but good to get it worked out.

  • IBook G4 screen goes black, suddenly doesn't recognize input

Last night I was using my ibook in the usual manner, in the middle of sending a file to a friend, when my screen went black as if it were going into a screen saver, but wouldn't respond. The backlight was still on, but it seemed to be frozen. I force shut it down, tried to turn it back on. The backlight came on, and it seemed to be starting up, but no picture appeared. Tried again. The second time it didn't turn the backlight on at all, and wouldn't respond. I figured maybe it had just overheated. I let it rest for a couple of hours, then tried again. This time it went to the startup screen, and I figured it was alright and had just overheated or something. But a few minutes after I entered my password and it loaded my desktop and everything, it went back into the backlit black screen. I left it off for the night because I wasn't sure what was happening.
This morning I turned it on and the first time, the backlight turned on, but no activity. The second time, the backlight wouldn't turn on. Same thing the third time. Decided to try to boot off the install cd, and though it didn't boot from it, it started up fine and things seem to be working so far. I'm just afraid it's going to happen again. Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I've had to rely on keeping it plugged in for power for the last 2.5 years or so since my battery no longer holds a charge.
Please buy a new battery. You owe it to your computer and to yourself. Even though it will run when plugged into household electricity, that is not how the computer was designed to operate.
Also, if I look close enough at the screen, I can make out the desk top slightly; it's like the brightness is setting is way low, when it is actually on the brightest setting. The screen goes black in the same way if I leave the computer on, but unattended for like 5 minutes.
Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Energy Saver and check the settings under the Power Adapter tab as well as the Battery tab. You may want to reset the Power Adapter so that the monitor stays on for longer.

  • Wireless upgrade and screen goes dim questions? - 2different things in one thread

I have a T42.  Recent upgrade is replacing the hard drive and upgrade the RAM to max.  I am thinking of upgrading the wireless card to improve the internet speed.  Any suggestion?
The machine was not behaving lately.  The screen went dim (very dim) and sometimes black and white.  It seems that it went to battery mode by itself.  Wondering what causes this?  The machine was connected to AC and I set never hibernate and turn-off when AC plug-in.
    Thanks.

  • Laptop screen going dim to bright

I've just recently noticed that my laptop screen is going from dim to bright every few minutes. It doesn't matter if I have my charger plugged into it or not or if I adjust the brightness myself. It always got back and forth from bright to dim. I have a Satellite S875-S7376 laptop. I've tried to do some research on it here and on the internet before posting this but nothing seems to work with what I have. Any ideas to what this is? Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Screen goes dim

Lately, about once every two days, the light on my laptop screen slowly but surely becomes dimmer for about 10-20 seconds until it is near black. Then it suddenly lights up back to normal. Any idea what is causing this?
    Thanks,
    J

does this behaviour occur on external monitor? also have you tried to update the thinkpad power manager and bios?
this dimming could be caused by softwares (which we try our best to rule out first) or the CCFl backlight/inverter hardware.

  • IMac screen going dim . . .

Lately my older imac screen has been somewhat dim when waking from sleep.... only happens sometimes, seems to be normally bright at the bottom, growing dimmer the further toward the top you look .... if I restart, everything is fine again.
Hardware problem? Seems unlikely since it seems unrelated to how long the computer has been on, it's immediately fine on restart. Any ideas appreciated . . .

Some problem with my iMac. Took it back to the Apple Reseller, they 'repaired' it after 3 weeks. Got it back, still the same problem. Called them and they said is was a normal buzz which the inverter card(?) makes, like the fan and the HD.

  • Open ibook past 45 degree angle and screen goes black

My iBook's screen goes black once it gets opened past about the 45 degree angle. I purchased it in July 2001...is this the life expectancy of an iBook? It has been repaired many times and still has OS 9 (bc the CD drive doesn't work so I can't update it) so is it just old and junked?! Thankfully I have a eMac now, but it's nice to have my laptop available also.
Thanks for any and all help in this matter!
    Kelly

Hi, Kelly. Welcome to Apple Discussions.
DT & T Computer Services will repair the inverter cable for you for $125 plus shipping. They also do free diagnostics, so if that isn't what's wrong, they can tell you what is and how much it will cost to fix it.
    Good luck.

  • Screen goes from dim to bright? WHY?

my screen goes dim ..not really black but goes dim back and forth...why is this? i thought it was something related to the screen going dim before it sleeps but i noticed non of the boxes were checked. and as im writing this the screen goes dim and back to bright

    Hiya HOR,
no problem. The only thing you could perhaps try is (in system preferences/ displays) to adjust the brightness settings and see if that makes a difference.
Now, I must say that my (2006) macbook's screen is totally illegible in bright sunlight, even when changed to ignore the energy saver settings when on battery (i.e. best performance, rather than best battery efficiency). This did make the screen brighter for general use.
I was under the impression that yours flickers in response to activity (e.g. quick scrolling on browser); but now that you have described it, I think, the answer might be in system preferences. Good luck.

  • Dreaded 90 degree and screen goes black

I have been putting up with my ibook screen going dim whenever you open the screen to 90 degrees for about five months. However, it is now starting to become really annoying because I have to switch the computer off, close the screen and reboot it in order to regain the picture. Does anybody in the UK know anywhere where I can send it to be fixed or indeed how much it costs roughly if I have to send it back to Apple? I believe it is simply a problem of damaged cables that need replacing.
I am starting law school soon and about to invest in a new imac but it would be useful to keep my trusty old ibook ticking over to use in the library etc (it's lasted me 4 years through my degree!). Any advice on this matter very gratefully received!!
    Thanks

Here in the U.S. there is a repair shop in Vermont who used to do it for $79.90.
If you take it to Apple, the official Apple Authorized repair is to replace the entire display (at a cost of hundreds of dollars).
You may want to check out this long-standing thread for some idea of what you are up against:

  • X-61 goes dim, power dies, requires battery removal, reseating to restart

This seems to be a variation on the X-60 problem - twice now my X61 running Vista Business has simply stopped operating (not shut down), while in the midst of normal operations. The screen goes dim (as if it were going into power saver mode while on batteries), then black, with no lights lit - including power. The workaround is to unplug, pull the battery, then re-seat the battery and plug back in.
When the workaround is followed, the system powers up normally, advises that there has been an incomplete shutdown, and offers safe mode as a startup option - but starts normally.
    Any suggestions?

I would want to run the Apple hardware test, to see if there is an obvious hardware problem:
    1. Disconnect all external devices from your computer except the keyboard and mouse. If you have an Ethernet cable connected, disconnect it.
2 Insert the Mac OS X Install Disc 1 that came with your computer.
3 Restart your computer and hold down the Option key as it starts up.
A list of available startup volumes appears.
4 Click Apple Hardware Test and click the right arrow.
5 Follow the onscreen instructions when the Apple Hardware Test main screen appears
    (after about 45 seconds).
    6. When prompted, choose the extended test.
Does this give any error messages?

  • I phone 4 goes dim/dark during use

Replaced a cracked screen, phone comes on fine but after brief usage the screen goes dim/dark. Pressing the sleep/awake button on top will usually bring it back to normal but it continues to do this until I do hard reset. If I hold the phone at an angle, I can still make out that there are icons, phone is still on, calls and alerts still come through. Have done sleep/home buttons reset. If it were a connector issue I would think the screen would not come on at all... Any help would be appreciated!

Try hard reset. If not Resore as new iPhone. iOS 4.0.1 Made signal much more reliable. Unless of course at&t service is actually alot worse than previous phones showed.
