IBook G3 Slowing Down Considerably

My old iBook G3 has slowed down a lot, especially since I upgraded to Tiger. I am planning to increase the RAM but, I was also wondering if it might be that I am reaching the point of filling the hard drive.
Question : will adding an external HD help speed up things or would I need to change the internal HD with bigger capacity ?

I'd definitely recommend upgrading the RAM with a 512 MB module.

One possibility is that you may need to "Upgrade" your Cable /DSL Modem if you have an older unit.  ISP's that provide your Internet service in recent years have been switching over from DOCSIS 2.1 version Modems to DOCSIS 3.0 version Modems, which handle the new higher data streaming speeds the ISP's are offering.  I would suggest you call your ISP's Technical Support and inquire about this possibility.

  • 3 month old iMac has slowed down considerably after installing ML

I bought my iMac 3 months ago and installed Mountain Lion last night. Now everything on my Mac has slowed down considerably. From opening the System Settings to opening a page in Safari.
I have MS Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint installed and also VMware Fusion.  I have software (CorelDraw) that only runs on Windows (the one I have) therefor the virtual harddrive.
Is this what is causing the problem? If so, how can i uninstall ML to get my computer back to it's previous state.
I am very new to Mac so I don't quite know where to go and how to fix it.

I was just about to write the same problem, but I don't have VMware; my laptop is late 2008 was running Snow Leopard (uptodate version).
I've scientific softwares so probably would require a clean re-installation of ML. I MUST MENTION HERE that those software which were written for PPC will NOT work on ML. Just found out that one of my important softwares version won't work on ML; need $500  to upgrade that software .
Therefore, I'd also want to know how can I go back to SL.
I'll let you know how clean re-installation has worked.

Since installing Maverick, speed has slowed down considerably. Not able to export photos form email to iphoto. What is going on?

    When did you install?
Spotlight will need to re-index the entire system so that can cause slow performance if you updated recently. It can take many hours on a large disk with a lot of data. Click the Spotlight menu, it should say if it is still indexing.
There is no point trying to fix anything whilst this is ongoing, because it may just speed up when complete.
Are you able to drag photos from email to the Desktop or to iPhoto's icon? How about the 'File menu > Save attachments' option?
Please clarify what you have tried, otherwise we may waste time on the wrong thing.
If the system is generally unstable there are other things to try too, such as safe boot.

That will isolate all third party software, if the Mac is able to do the things that didn't work it suggests that you have software that is loading at startup or login. The easiest way for us to see these is if you download EtreCheck & generate a report.
Post the report here & we can try pointing to items that you can either update or remove.

  • My iMac has slowed down considerably soon after my Apple Care expired.  Reminds me of the PC days.

What can I do about my iMac slowing down.  Shortly after my Apple Care ran out it started to slow considerably.  Kind of like having a PC again.  On a PC I would defrag it, but Apple tells me it is not recommended for the iMac.  Tired of watching the multi-colored circle spin.  What can be done?  I just upgraded to Lion.  The problem seems a bit worse since.  AND I can no longer get my iMac to back  up with Time Machine.   What gives?

Try using disk utility on your hard drive to repair it, also repair your permissions.  Open activity monitor and take a look at your RAM and CPU usage.  You may have a program or tow taking up a lot of your resources.

  • IBook G4 slowing down -- Archive & Install question

    Hello,
I have an iBook G4, that I bought I believe back in late 2004. It's been slowing down quite a bit and I'm thinking about performing an Archive & Install, which a guy at the Genius Bar recommended would make my performance much quicker and less spinning beachballs.
I have an Airport, through which I access my internet wirelessly, and printer wirelessly. After performing an Archive & Install, will I need to re-setup my wireless internet and ability to print wirelessly? It's been a long time since I set these up the first time, and kind of dread relearning the process.
    Thanks,
    Ben

You could try booting into Safe Mode. This will take quite awhile longer than a normal startup because it does a file check and repair of the hard disk.
You will see your normal desktop. Once completely started up in Safe Mode, restart normally, and go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Click on the top hard drive icon in the left sidebar and note the S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom right of the pane. What does it say?
Select the named boot volume in the left sidebar ("Macintosh HD" unless you've renamed it). What is the hard drive capacity and how much space remains available on it? Repair permissions on it.
See if a little hard drive maintenance helps things out.
(In the future, you may want to post in the iBook G4 Forum. You have posted in the iBook G3 (Dual USB) Forum.)

  • System has slowed down considerably after updates from Apple. Is SyncServer the culprit?

I use MacBook with preinstalled OS Leopard since April 2009. I have also regulalry updated my computer system using the Software Update application. However, since my last update on 12th Aug 2011, I have noticed that my system has slowed down. There is long pause between every character I type, delay in switching applications, battery dries out quicker, slow response to every command.
I have started facing this problem after updating following software like iTunes 10.4, Safari 5.0.6, Migration Assistant Update for MAC OS Leopard & Quick Time 7.7 from Software Updater. Although, my OS is still leopard.
I noticed on the Activity Monitor that syncserver is using majority of my RAM and reappers even if I stop the process. Some of its subprocess like AddressBookSync also appears and consumes lot of memory. Is this the problem? Though, I never noticed earlier what size it consumed.
I use Microsoft Office suite for Mac and have also checked and deselected all sync services. Yet, the Process (PID 305) continues to appear in Activity Monitor.
I am no techie, and would appreciate quick help to resolve this issue.
    Thanks!

  • All Firefox builds/versions have slowed down considerably

Recently, Firefox slowed down to a crawl while doing pretty much anything - loading pages, watching videos, loading images. Firefox isn't crashing or going gray, it's just running at a snail's pace. However, the connection speed of the internet at home isn't the issue, as my parents still can get on the Internet just fine, and using Firefox, too. I thought it was a problem with the F4 beta, so I downgraded to 3.6, but with no result. I've had to lifeboat out to Chrome - it still works fine, no slowdowns, and neither does IE. Downloads still seem to go at a respectable pace, so I'm just confused as to what the problem is. Help would be greatly appreciated.

Is it your computer or your Internet connection? Even if your connection is fast the speed of the Internet also depends upon every server computer between you and your web sites. Are you on an unsecured wireless connection and somebody else is using it? What about general things you do on your computer. Do you have any processor intensive activities you can use for comparison test purposes? This can go all kinds of directions so we need to try to narrow it down to your computer or your connection.

I expect your technician has already tried this, but you can restore a PC to a point in time that is earlier than the problem first became apparent (see link below for windows 8)

  • Textmode/BIOS boot-up slowed down 15~20x after clean Win 7 Installation

    Hi there,
My company received a S10-2 (WinXP Home OEM) as a gift after purchasing an IBM x3650 server.
As my company is moving towards Win 7, the following was performed in sequence:
    1) Deletion of all partition (including the quick boot, recovery and WinXP partition)
    2) Clean installation of Win 7 Pro
    3) Office Pro 2k3, NetOp Guest
    4) Win 7 Patches from my company's WSUS server
    5) Replaced 1GB Ram to 2GB (DDR2 3500 667Mhz, 1.8v)
    6) latest S10-2 bios (rev 22)
    7) Win 7 driver: NIC and Intel GMA950
Textmode boot-up slowed down considerably after step 3) - even the underscore ("_") blinks 10-20 times slower. Generally it takes 15 minutes to boot into GUI of Win 7.
Despite the slow boot-up, speed/performance of S10-2 is acceptable once booted into GUI of Win 7. Windows Experience Index of HDD, RAM and CPU averages at 3~4 with Graphics lowest at 2.2.
I have tried the following but with no avail:
    1) Put back the 1GB RAM
    2) Reseated the following: HDD, RAM and WiFi
    3) Update BIOS to rev 22 (Step 6)
    4) Update Windows Drivers (Step 7)
I also came across the following blog entry that suggests to disable "Quick Boot" which I will try tomorrow (English description at the end):
    http://crashsource.de/114-acer-insydeh2o-bios-kaltstart-friert-bootvorgang-ein/
Kindly please advise what can be done before I send it back to Lenovo.
Any help and suggestion is greatly appreciated ;-)
    Solved!

    Dear all,
The issue seems to be resolved after installing the latest storage matrix driver from Intel. The boot time drop from 15minutes to approx 40 seconds.
It appears that the EFI BIOSes is very sensitive even to the drivers used by Windows?

  • JVM performance slowed down after

    Hello all,
My java application is heavily multithreaded and its supposed to run as a 24/7 service. Its supposed to collect SMS from different servers, store in memory/flat-files and send them to clients.
The application has been running for the past 6 days and
the JVM has slowed down considerably. (performance has gone down)
Initially the app used to receive/send arnd 50 SMS per second and now it process aroubd 20-25 SMS per second.
I've been using Your kit profiler to profile my app.
The maximum heap I allocated was 500MB; the alloted Heap shown in the
profiler is 95MB and the used Heap is 65MB
The CPU usage looks fairly stable,i.e. it does go up when SMS comes in
and i/o operations takes place and goes to 0% when no process is being done.
memory usage also looks fairly stable.
    (No explicit memory leaks)
The application has over 133 threads and that stays the same as per
    the profiler tool kit.
Also in my application I have a maintainance phase at 23:00 hours during which i do some cleaning work like
-deleting of expired SMS from memory
    -deleting old log files
    -deleteing other flat files
-and finally I explicitly call the garbage collector
What should I look in - to maintain the performance, should I not explicitly call
the GC and let JVM do it on its own? or is it beacause the heap space has become fragmented? - I do make a lots of read/writes from/to the objects stored in Heap.
I also make around 160,000+ read/write from/to flat files in the hard disk.
Could this cause the JVM to slow down?
Any suggestion on this will be great.

Initially the app used to receive/send arnd 50 SMS
per second and now it process aroubd 20-25 SMS per
    second.
I've been using Your kit profiler to profile myapp.
Does it have CPU profiling? If yes, then you can look
at where the time's being spent when processing a
    message.
It does have a CPU profiling graph, but there is nothing much i can infer from it, I can see the graph peaking to 60-80% CPU usage when SMS are comming in (i.e. SMS is received, stored in memory & a copy is also put in the flat file - which is a read/write I/O operation, so I would defenitely expect the CPU to peak up); this peaking up would normally happen between 6-9am when lots of SMS come it to my app. The rest of the time (in the afternoon & evening) CPU is 0% ; so I can defenitely rule ot memory leak right?
its difficult to find out the time taken to process every message; the rough estimate I got from the log file is 50SMS / Sec. i.e. 50SMS receievd via TCP/IP; then store it in flat file & memory and also deliver it across to a client via socket; get a response back; change some status in memory and also in the flat file; this count of 50 has defenitely dropped to 25-30 in 6 days.
    >
The maximum heap I allocated was 500MB; thealloted
Heap shown in the profiler is 95MB and the usedHeap is 65MB
    So not a memory problem.
The CPU usage looks fairly stable,i.e. it does goup
when SMS comes in and i/o operations takes place
and goes to 0% when no process is being done.So not a background thread that's run amok
    (probably).
The application has over 133 threads and thatstays
the same as per the profiler tool kit.You could be running into contention for a shared
resource. This will show up in the CPU profiler, or
you can get a "quick and dirty" report by hitting
Ctrl-\ in the window where the JVM is running (or, if
on Unix, sending SIGQUIT to the JVM process). This
will send a thread dump to the console. Look for a
lot of threads "wait"ing on some object, then look
for the thread that holds that object.
You are talking of possible dead-locks right? thats something i@ve go to llok into; the profiler does lists ot a list of possible thread-deadlocks. but all of them are purposefully made into TIMED_WAITING ; would that cause the performance to drop?
    >
What should I look in - to maintain theperformance,
should I not explicitly call the GC and let JVM doit on its own?
Never call GC directly. The JVM will do it when
necessary. Plus, you don't appear to have a memory
    issue.
Yep, would change that and avoid calling GC directly.
    >
    I also make around 160,000+ read/write from/toflat
files in the hard disk. Could this cause the JVM toslow down?
Ahh ... flat files in a single directory? A lot of
files in one directory will definitely slow things
down, especially if you're opening them for every
read and write: the OS has to scan the entire
directory to find the file.Nothing much I can do there.
    >
Does performance improve after your nightly cleanup?
If yes, and you're removing old files, then this is
an indication of the problem.I'll look into the logs to see if there is any increase in performance after GC and clome back

  • Shutting down iTunes causes system to slow down

When ever I shut down iTunes my computer slows down considerably. When I check windows task manager under processes it shows iTunes to be still active and taking up about 90% of my system resources. I have to shut down iTunes in task manager to solve this problem. Does anyone know what may cause this?

When your mailboxes were moved to Office 365, your directory should have been updated so it pointed to the mailboxes in Office 365, not to your local Exchange 2003 mailboxes.  Just thinking this through, I think your consultant didn't do a complete
job.  With the Exchange 2013 PowerShell tools, you should be able to update your 500 accounts so they point to the proper system for the mailboxes.

  • Ipad 1 slows down after installing IOS 5

Adter installing IOS 5 my Ipad 1 slows down considerably. Apps take time to start and especially the writing is so slow that I actually I cannot use the Pad anyomore. I udgraded only because I could not update imoorstant apps (keypad, pages) anymore with the old operating system. But this is no solution. Anyone elseexperiencing this problem or am I the only one?

    it just doesn't work...
I used Pages and Keynote and Garageband extensively in ios4, with few problems. now, in ios5 they take quite literally several minutes to load, if they don't crash (usually a 50% chance).
I have been to my local Genius Bar and they suggested "restoring as new", as opposed to "restoring with backup". i took this advice, and did both (post ios5 upgrade) and performance is still just awful.
really loved this device up until now, and could even reliably use it for work. at the moment i have an expensive paperweight and am not at all pleased.
seems i have company here. are you listening apple?

  • IMac 700 slowing down

My wife has noticed her iMac 700 with OS X 10.4.12 really slowing down considerably after the upgrade to .12 several weeks ago. The hard drive shows only 12+Gb remaining out of 40GB, 25+ used. I have gone through and cleaned all the caches and recent items files with no change and she keeps clearing the Safari Cache regularly, almost daily recently. I have also folderized all documents on the desktop and removed all document no longer in use. The last update is probably the last "Optimize".
Is there anything else I can do to bring this back to some kind of regularity?
    Sparkgapper

Then I guess my question is answered even though I have no time to first find one of those forums and secondly it would not then be worth the hassle and trouble it would cause by "do this" if that doesn't work then "do that" or "there is no way to do that on an iMac" when I am quite sure the primary problem is defrag (called Optimization by apple) since there has not been an systems upgrade in quite some time.
