Ibook G3 Tiger won't start up; PLS HELP

My computer was "asleep". I hit the track pad to wake it and my computer comes back on. However, the spinning wheel wouldn't stop and all of the sudden the screen went grey to the spinning circle like during start up. I waited to see if it would resolve on its own..nothing. I tried restarting by pressing the power button down and it won't boot up. It gets to the blue screen with the apple and the progress bar goes all the way to the end and then it can't get passed it.
I tried starting from CD with c key--and it prompts me to install the software. I checked disk permissions and all of that came back fine..so the HD appears to be OK.
I tried restarting holding the shift key down, nothing happenes.
Can anyone help--I'd really rather not have to reinstall system software!

Try starting up from the Mac OS X Install Disc by inserting the disc and restarting your computer, holding down the C key as the startup chime is ending. In Tiger, click 'Next' at the language screen and choose Utilities > Disk Utility and select the hard drive in the left column. Choose the First Aid tab. Click Repair Disk to test and repair the hard drive.
Once you have repaired the hard drive with the Install disc's Disk Utility, then start up normally and repair permissions from Disk Utility in the Utilities folder on the hard drive.

  • Tiger won't start up, no volume to mount to?

    Hi everyone,
I was doing some permissions repair and disk cleanup, when my power went out. Now Tiger won't start up! I get a full-screen shell with the following text:
    disk0s3: I/O error.
    disk0s3: I/O error.
    /etc/master.password: Input/output error
    disk0s3: I/O error.
    -sh: /etc/profile: Input/output error
    -sh-2.05b#
If I leave the Mac on, the fans start spinning up slowly and keep building to a roar. I've left it on for about 1 minute, then shut it down.
Starting up by holding the Command key down after the startup ding gets me a screen with a folder icon (?), which proceeds to turn into a smiley face and then the bootup sequence starts. It then goes back to the full-screen shell.
I put in my Tiger (10.4) install disk, and the Disk Utility shows the Hard Drive, but the Macintosh HD volume is greyed out and won't / can't mount, be verified, or repaired.
Trying to install so that I can archive / install yields no HDs that I can install to. Luckily I keep my PC around for just such an occurance
So the question is, what is going on here? Thanks in advance,
    -Gary

You are going to have to reformat the drive. If there is a chance of data recovery it would be best if you stop using the drive altogether. Find another Mac with Firewire. Connect the two by Firewire cable. Boot the "bad" computer into Target Disk Mode, then boot the "good" computer normally. The "bad" computer's disk drive should appear on the other computer's Desktop. If the drive is still accessible, then you may be able to recover your data.
When you reformat the drive use the following procedure:
    1. Boot from your Tiger DVD. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.

  • One more iBook won't start. Please help...

    Hi,
I apologise for my English from the very beginning. Be patient please...
I see from older topics that I am having a rather common problem. I just got this iBook G3 900 MHz 12' 680 Mb RAM from Ebay. It lasted 5 days (working fine) and then it suddenly died.
I have already tried all possible key combinations for PMU resets and carefully read the help page in case when a portable won't start. No good.
Here are the synthoms more in detail: The battery would not charge (it has only 1 flashing light out of four and I was warned before it died that its charge level was getting low). The ibook now don't start, even with the power adapter hooked up.
If this can help, the ring light on the adapter cord is green when the battery is on, and removing the battery turns the light to amber.
I started reading Internet discussions and it sounded an DC in-board problem, and I've already found a replacement from a friend...
    BUT...
I did a further test tonight taking the battery for an identical ibook of a friend and when I put his battery on mine, it started up and kept being up only for me to see that the battery level was getting low low low --- dead again. Now, my friend is pretty sure that his battery was at least half-charged but to me it seems very strange that my ibook would drain away all power from a battery in 10 seconds. Can it be a short circuit ???
Back on Internet, I have discovered these Apple discussions, so before beginning unscrewing the whole ibook to replace the DC-in board (I understand this is not the easiest piece to change) I wanted to have your advice on something I might have missed with my "diagnosis".
Could it be the "famous" logic board everyone is complaining about ? The ibook was bought in August 2003 so I am still eligible for the replacement. Could it possibly be ? I though that ibooks with such a problem did boot up...
Sorry. I wrote too much. Thank you in advance for any help you might be willing to give me...
    ibook G3 900 MHz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
No problems with your English whatsoever.
Have you tried your friend's adapter with the iBook? Was your iBook plugged into the adapter when it rapidly discharged your friend's battery? It could be an adapter problem. The adapter should show green when the battery is not installed, and amber when it is — exactly the opposite of what you are seeing. The amber light is supposed to indicate that the battery is charging. The green light means that it is NOT charging. When things are working right, the green light means the battery has stopped charging because it is completely charged. When things aren't working right, it just means the battery isn't charging — for whatever reason. Since your adapter is showing the lights the opposite of what it is supposed to do, it's an indication that it may not be working right.
These are the four most common possibilities when the battery will not charge:
    (1) there is something wrong with your battery
    (2) there is something wrong with your power adapter
    (3) there is something wrong with your power input board (the part that contains the port where you plug in the adapter)
    (4) there is something wrong with your logic board
To diagnose a bad DC-in board, you need to make sure it isn't the battery or the adapter at fault by swapping out first one and then the other, If it runs from a known good charged battery okay, but won't run from a known good adapter, then you are going to have to replace the power input board.
Usually, if it is a logic board problem, the iBook simply will not run from the battery. This happened to mine. The battery showed up in the battery status indicator. It was recognized by the computer and charged by the adapter (as shown by the battery status indicator). However, when I unplugged the adapter from the iBook, it was just like pulling the power cord from the wall on a desktop. The iBook immediately shutdown. Dead.
My husband’s problem was quite obviously the power input (DC-in) board because the adapter tip had broken off in the port. Often (and, sadly, in our case), this damages the power input board so that it no longer functions, necessitating replacement of the board as well as the broken adapter.
Your experience does not exactly match either of ours. It is my best hunch that if your adapter is not the problem, then it is the logic board and not the DC-in board at fault. However, this is not the problem covered by the iBook Logic Board Repair Extension Program.
Since you already have the extra DC-in board, if it proves not to be the adapter at fault, you may want to try installing the DC-in board, in hopes that will correct the problem.
    Good luck.

  • OS X 10.4 Tiger won't start

Just bought a new Macbook pro running leopard.
My old powerbook G4 running Tiger now won't start.
It gets to the grey apple page, then the circular spinning gate, then after some considerable time 'starting mac os x'
    thats where it stays.
    Any ideas?

Target Disk Mode is described here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
If it works, see if the MacBook Pro can see the Powerbook. If it can see the Powerbook, you can import the mailboxes with the Mail program from the other machine.
If it doesn't work, how old is the Powerbook?

  • ICal on Tiger won't start. No crash message.

    Hi all,
I installed Leopard on an unsupported 800Mhz G4 iMac. It worked fine but the airport card wasn't supported, so I decided to revert back to Tiger.
So, I did an erase and install, to give me a brand "new" clean system. After the install I downloaded the software updates.
Then I did a sync, replacing all the data on the computer with the data in .Mac. Everything works fine: mail, address book, bookmarks ... BUT ... iCal now won't start. The icon bounces 3 or 4 times, then it stops without another word. Looking in the console log shows that iCal hits a "white space" or "white page" error (I'm not at my machine ATM)
Anybody got any ideas how to cure this? Can I do a reinstall to repaie iCal?
    Stuart

    Stuart,
.Mac has been suffering maintenance pains since Oct 19, 2007 5:51 AM.
If your problem is related to .Mac sync, and you do not have any other backups, it may be difficult to resolve until .Mac is fully functional.
In the meantime experiment with removing the iCal Plist. This can be accomplished by quitting iCal and dragging the com.apple.iCal.plist file which is located in your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder to the Desktop. Then log out/in or restart and check iCal for normal behavior. You can delete the iCal plist file on your Desktop.
    ;~)

  • After last update, my os Tiger won't start normally

I tried to update my 1.25 ibook with the update that came out around the end of febuary and now my computer won't start normally.
I can safeboot this system but after about 10 minutes it freezes and must be restarted. a few time I have gotten it to start to safemode, and then restart right afterwards, and it will restart in normal mode, but then freeze after a few minutes. I've tried to reboot from my backup disks and I can get done with the upload, but then things all freeze up, then I'm forced to power down and start again. Its been a few weeks, and I miss my laptop, and need to get some work done so, getting this resolved would be great
    thanks

    First...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    Next, Repair Permissions.

My mac book keep on beeping and make the beep sound 3 time (same goes to the light) and it won't start up. What should i do?

If you recently installed new ram, make sure it is seated properly.
If that doesn't work try removing one stick at a time to see if one is dead or put original ram back in.

  • My G5 won't start up - Please help!

My Power Mac G5 won't start up! I turn it on and hear the start up chime, then the fan goes as usual and then it appears to be starting up - then it gets to initializing network connections (I think!) then the screen goes blue and it freezes! Does anybody have any idea why this is happening? Please help!

    Hi viccilogan-
In that case, I offer a few more documents for your perusal and prior to actually being in front of the unit and able to troubleshoot.
    The following may be helpful:

    HEllo,
I've installed oracle 9.01 and later on 8.1.7 i cannot use the assistants net 8 and dbca after installation. Does anybody have the same problem. I think is has something to do with jre versions.
I alse got the same problem when i installed db9.0 and oracle appserver 1.2.2.2 on the same machine. SOme config assistant won't start after install.
    ALready tnx.

    Hello, yogendra k saini
I'd installed oracle90 and 1.2.2 in different oracle homes. There was no error message. When i pressed the icon. Nothing happens.
Yesterday i installed also a 8.1.7 database on the same machine as the 9.0.1.4 database. After a reinstallation of appserv 1.2.2a everything seems to work fine.
but it is still a mystery for me why, because when i only install a 9.0.1.4 database and appserv 1.2.2.2 something goes wrong. Maybe APpserv 1.2.2. doesn't work fine with 9.0 database. That's not exactly true because i used appserv 1.2.2 for forms en reports...

  • HT4623 i get thgis msg "We're sorry, we are unable to continue with your activation at this time", when i updated ma iphone and it doesn't start .. pls help?

pls help me how to start of ma iphone 3g , as i updated it to ios 6.1.2

99.9% of the time, the cause of this issue is the fact the phone was jailbroken/hacked to unlock it for use on networks other than the network the phone was originally locked to. Apple maintains a database of officially unlocked iPhones, and when Apple's servers detect phones such as yours, activation stops & you get the message you got.
So, either get a sim card from the carrier your phone was originally locked to, or get it officially unlocked, because it appears that it was not officially unlocked.

I spoke with Apple about this and here are the steps I was walked through to get Safari working again. Basically, I had to re-install Safari from my Leopard DVD.
    1. Open the Applications folder and drag Safari to the trash. Don't empty the trash yet.
    2. Insert the Leopard install DVD
    3. Open the Optional Installs folder
    4. Start the Optional Install mpkg
    5. Continue through the Install steps until you reach the point where you can select Applications. Expand the Applications tree and select Safari. Action will change from Skip to Upgrade. Continue with the install until it is complete.
    6. Start Safari

  • Tiger won't start

I have a 450mhz G4 that's been running 10.3 fine for years. However I need to upgrade it to 10.4.
I reset permissions, installed 10.4 from the DVD (black), and everything seemed to be working fine. I reset permissions again, then did Software update. It installed normally to 10.4.11, and restarted. That when it stalled at the "No" symbol.
I rebooted from the DVD, reset the permissions, same result. Resetting the PRAM didn't help either. I tried reinstalling to the base 10.4 version on the DVD, and now even that won't run.
I did successfully install 10.3 on a second partition, and can boot from that. I have downloaded the combined updater seperately, but can't run it until I can get booted in 10.4.
Safe Mode will not work. Option start lets me select the HD, but it still stalls the same way.
I have a recent backup, but don't want to go the full install route unless there is a good chance it will work.
Nothing is currently connected except the keyboard, mouse and monitor. No hardware has been changed.

Hi John, just a note, even with the 7.2 GB free space partition you are going to be hard pressed to run Tiger, with just a Browser & Text Edit open, my VM is using 6.98 GB if free space!
Tiger uses twice as many resources as Panther, updates are twice as big, on & on.
