IBook G3 Upgrades/Panther/Ebay Sale?

Hello,
I am new to the discussion board and have a few questions to ask regarding my ibook G3 Indigo Firewire. A few years ago, my old Gateway finally bit the dust; I was sorta relieved it was time anyways. I needed another computer and my brother had purchased an ibook G3 Indigo Firewire with the original box, paperwork, and CD's. I showed some interest in the iBook, as I needed a computer to replace the Gateway. So, I bought it from him in 2003.
The computer got me through my four years of college, with no worries. However, it is a tad slow. I have been looking at the new macbooks but find it difficult to part with this old ibook. I have been looking through the discussion board for many weeks to determine what may be needed to upgrade this ibook. I have found some answers but still uncertain.
Am I a nut to try to upgrade this old ibook? I understand that even with some upgrades it will never perform as the new macbooks will. However, I have currently been using Tiger 10.4.8 and find it difficult to have more than two applications running at the same time.
So, I am either going to take Tiger off and put Panther on it and just leave it at that OR upgrade the original 10GB hard drive to around an 80GB hard drive and upgrade the RAM to 576MB from the current 320MB OR just put the ibook for sale on Ebay and pray I can find another Apple computer to purchase that is as enjoyable as this old iBook G3 Indigo Firewire.
My dad told me to just leave it alone, don't fix anything if it isn't broken and if the low performance is a bother just put Panther on it or sell it. However, he is not an Apple user nor an enthusiast.
I guess it would be nice to hear from other users in the discussions on any other thoughts, suggestions, or recommendations.
Thanks!

I've had my ibook blueberry for the last couple years now and its been the best laptop i've ever had. It's reliable and the battery life is a good five hours or more. I do have a new intel imac but whenever i got out somewhere, the ibook comes with me. My problem is im going off to university in the fall and i need a computer to bring with me, my friends and family suggest a new laptop, but the ibook still works. My plan is to update the RAM to its max and possibly get a combo drive off ebay, i've already upgraded the harddrive to 40gb.
Personally, i would keep the ibook and upgrade the RAM and Harddrive to the best you can get your hands on and if you aren't to attached to Tiger, put panther on there b/c it seems to work great on my ibook. You can get an airport card for a fair price and a 512mb SO-DIMM shouldn't cost too much more than 100$, the 80gb harddrive would be the most expensive upgrade. The ibook clamshell was a great model and easily has another few years of life left in it, if you start to see that you need more speed however, as previously mentioned, it'd be best to get a new macbook and set the ibook as a backup computer.

  • Display of eBay Sales Manager Sold Page to wide for screen. Scrolling is driving me mad. Help please for Newbie to Mac!

I have a new Mac Book Pro 13” & an iPad for my Amazon and eBay business. I have been a PC user.  The problem relates to both.
On my eBay Manager Sold page, the display of the page is wider than my screen. I use Safari and all other webpages are fine apart from this and a couple of other eBay Sales Manager pages.  I have tried using the eBay default column widths for the Sold display page & also setting the widths of the Sold columns to my own preferences.  However, on each page refresh the display page width reverts meaning I am having to scroll left and right to see full details of each sale.
Help would be much appreciated as it is driving me mad.  I have tried all the usual things - page display, clearing cookies, restarting computer but nothing helps.

    Hey mylittlefleur,
Sounds like the eBay Manager Sold page expects a very wide window.
Does the content get too small if you zoom out the window?
Zoom in on webpages - Safari Help
Make the webpage content larger: Choose View > Zoom In, press Command (⌘)–Plus Sign (+), or pinch open on your trackpad. To make only text larger, choose View > Zoom Text Only before you zoom in.
Set a minimum font size for webpages: Choose Safari > Preferences, click Advanced, then select “Never use font sizes smaller than.” Click the pop-up menu and choose the minimum font size you want.
Expand to full-screen view: Click the green full-screen button in the top-left corner of the browser window, or press Control-Command (⌘)-F. To return to standard view, move the pointer to the top-left corner of the screen, then click the green full-screen button again, or press Control-Command (⌘)-F.
Of course you can zoom out to see more.

  • Buying a PS 7.0 Upgrade on eBay ( Registering question ) !!!

Okay I'm about to purchase a copy of Photoshop 7.0 Upgrade on eBay the seller stated the copies are legit ( Whos going to bootleg a 8 years old software ? )
He's not sure if they were registered or not.Personally I never registered anything so far and had 0 problems.I'm not the original owner so would I be able to update this software with registering ?
    Thank you

Aside from the admonition that Dec9 offers, owning pirated software is illegal, and also highly immoral.
Also, if you are able to install the software, should it be a pirated copy, there is a strong likelihood that it will not function, as designed. There are many posts on this forum, with people, who have all sorts of "deal-breaking" problems with such software. After several people try to help, it comes to light that it was a "backup copy" from eBay with a key-gen. There is not help. Adobe will turn a deaf-ear (if they do not come knocking on your door at Midnight), and so will the people here, as we all paid good money and follow the EULA as closely, as we can. We earn our living with the software, and pay for it. We do not want others stealing our images, and we do not want others stealing the software, that we paid dearly for.
If the seller is legit, and he/she could be, then the license transfer paperwork will be readily available, and can be verified with Adobe. If you get some mumbo-jumbo on "OEM," it ain't [SIC]. Also, if my memory serves me correctly (been a while since PS 7), you will also want to upgrade to, what is it 7.0.2, as there were issues with PS 7.0.0. Do not recall the details now. You will not be able to do so, with pirated software, and it will tip Adobe off to your possession of illegal software.
Verify everything first. Like I said earlier, if the seller hesitates on the paperwork, RUN!
Good luck, and hope that this is a legit package, and that the seller has everything necessary.

  • Can a Mac iBook with OSX Panther be upgraded to Tiger or Snow Leopard?

I have disks for OSX Tiger and Snow Leopard at home.  I just discovered that 10 years ago someone generously donated several Apple iBooks to my church.  The iBooks have the OSX Panther on them.  Can they be upgraded to Tiger or Snow Leopard?  if they can be upgraded, can I use my disks to upgrade them or do I have to purchase new disks?   Any information or suggestions will be helpful.  Thanks.

    Leopard System requirements
You must have a Macintosh computer with:
an Intel processor or a PowerPC G4 (867 MHz or faster) or G5 processor
    a DVD drive >built-in FireWire
at least 512 MB of RAM (additional RAM is recommended for development purposes)
a built-in display or a display connected to an Apple-supplied video card supported by your computer
at least 9 GB of disk space available, or 12 GB of disk space if you install the developer tools

  • Older iBook worth upgrading?

I have a 800mhz iBook that I bought used from the Apple store just over a year ago.
It fit the needs I had at the time.
I am curious if anyone thinks if it would be worth the money to change out the cd-rom for a super drive?
Or should I just wait to see what the intel version ibooks have to offer?
OR worse yet, buy an older 15" PB off ebay?

Actually that is incorrect. The G4 800 iBook has 2 USB 2.0 ports and 1 Firewire 400, not USB 1.0 ports.
I thought you were referring to this model. Thanks for the clarification.
Or should I wait to see what the new ibooks will go for? If the new ibooks (or what ever they will be called) follow the new mac mini for the video solution I will be very depressed.
That would be "speculation" which is not allowed by the agreement rules of the forum.
Sounds like a good deal with the Powerbook. The one issue I have with the PB is the heat they generate.
$500 for the various upgrades (sounds like a good deal too) is less $$$ than a refurbished 14" - usually around $900 or so. IMO, important the machine you use matches your computing needs.
For me, I'm waiting a year or so until the Intel transition is over. Given Intel's recent announcements, some pretty exciting computers are in the wings, probably 5-6 months or so from now, which may make the current MacIntel's seem like "yesterday's child".

  • IBook Blueberry Upgrade Questions

    Hello, all!
My manager is possibly going to be selling his iBook Blueberry clamshell. Here's the specs to my knowledge:
    300 MHz
    32 MB RAM
    New battery
    Air-Port card installed
    CD-ROM (working)
    Dead hard drive
    No Power adapter
So the obvious things on my list of sunk costs is a power adapter, and hard drive (yes, I know it's a pain to install a new hard drive, but hey, it'll be fun.)
    I mostly have 4 questions:
    1. I've heard that in order to make it compatible with > 128 MB sticks of ram, you must upgrade firmware through OS 9. Is that correct? (and how is that done?)
    2. What's the largest hard drive size I can install? I've read from various sources that the logic board won't read more than 128 GB drives, but then other sources say otherwise?
    3. Is it possible to upgrade to a DVD/CD-RW drive? And what models are compatible?
    4. Will it run Tiger if I can squeeze a 512 stick of ram in there?
I'm excited about starting this potential project, and this will also be my first Mac. Heck, it'll be my first Apple product. So any suggestions would be MUCHLY appreciated!!
    Cheers!

OK, so I've answered at least one of my questions, with the usual discrepancies. As per http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14870 , the maximum ram is 288 MB PC 66. As per www.crucial.com, the maximum ram is 288 MB PC 133. I trust Crucial's answer, as they seem to know what they're talking about, and understand that the firmware update IS needed. (BTW, http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75128 is the download for that, and I did find out that OS 9.1 needs to be locally installed on the machine for that to happen.)
This RAM upgrade would put me in spec for 10.4, but no so fast.
I also found out that as per the Tiger 10.4 system requirements (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1514?viewlocale=en_US) that Firewire and DVD support are required for Tiger, so I may just be stuck with Panther -- a small price to pay It's not a bad OS, really. Who needs Widgets anyway?
I'm still digging for more info on maximum hard drive capacity for upgrading the hard drive. I didn't find anything in the "firmware update" about the hard drive size being capped, or improved. Anyone?
Also, anyone have input on the DVD-drive (or CD-RW drive) update?

  • IBook 300 and Panther- Clock won't set right

    1. I've got an iBook 300 mhz with 128 mb ram. I've installed Panther on a 6 G Hd. I have the ibook plugged directly into the puck AC. So it is not using battery. (?)
When I try to set the clock time and date it is greyed out and says that it is 4/1/1976. I can't get it to change.
What do I need to do?
    2. How can I find out if it has been upgraded or updated to use larger memory? I wiped the OS 9 before I read you needed it to update. Installing OS X took hours.
    Donna Shelley

Donna, Hello and Welcome back to Discussions.
OS X shouldn't take hours to install (30 minutes is about right). To check the specs of your Mac in OS X go to Apple Menu > About this Mac > More Info...
    RAM.
Most of the 300MHz iBooks have 32Mb RAM (64Mb on later models) soldered to the logic board and then some will have some added in a single 144pin SODIMM slot. You can install a 512Mb PC100 SODIMM in the slot for a 544Mb/576Mb total. You can find the best RAM prices at ramseeker. OS X is very fussy about RAM so please buy from a Mac friendly supplier and tell them it's for an iBook Clamshell. Installing 256Mb (for a 288/320Mb total) should be enough and is significantly cheaper.
    Hard Disk.
The 300MHz iBook have pretty small hard disks and Panther will take up a large amount of this. You should not install the additional languages or print drivers (see the Customize option) on the OS X installer.
    Battery.
The iBook Clamshells are the only Macs that don't have a separate PRAM battery. This means that if you let the battery go flat you will loose date/time and various other settings.
    Firmware.
You should install this Firmware update whilst booted in to OS 9 to allow you to use the larger RAM modules and various other improvements.

  • Ibook g4 upgrade

hello every one I have a dilemma I have my son's laptop that had OS 10.3 and I tried to upgrade to OS 10.4 with the install disk from my quicksilver G4 it installed and I still have everything including Classic on it . The problem is now it will start up and come on with no glitches until it tries to locate the internet with my wireless plug in, it does connect before but not now . It now after trying to search for trying to connect to internet it comes up with a screen saying you need to restart computer by pressing button for several seconds and then freezes up. Every time I try to restart it goes right back to the same thing comes on and when you try to go online trying to find the internet it freezes. Do I need another OS 10.4 for I book and what kind retail trying to figure it out so I can get computer running again did not come with an OS start up disc of any kind. Please let me know I hope I do not have to restore it again like my quicksilver . thanks let me know tim

There shouldn't be any corrupt files if the hard disk drive were erased thoroughly,
then partition mapped (APM) and reformatted HFS+ with Disk Utility before install
of the Panther 10.3 system. Then on restart from the OS X install, run Disk Utility
in the new system, & 'repair disk permissions' before applying download updates.
{The additional Java update/downloads and Combo 10.3.9 download, along with
the last Security Update for Panther 10.3.9 are among the final main system
    upgrades the OS X Panther would need before getting the last browsers to work.}
    You install OS 9 Drivers with the initial format scheme from the OS X installer;
or if you have an original Install-restore disc, any OS 9 item would probably be
on one of the additional discs included in the software packet with the Mac.
Usually, the included software packet would have the newest OS 9 version on
the disc, at the time the computer was shipped. An older version won't install.
And, if the computer happened to be a mid-2005 or near end-run model iBook
G4, an install disc set had the last version, an OS 9.2.2 non-boot for Classic.
A full retail 9.2.1 (or rare 9.2.2 tech version) install disc would not work on a
computer which shipped with its own Mac OS 9.2.2 machine-specific version.
Since there is some information missing, on the exact iBook configurations
involved, more would be required to better guess at a possible cure.
About the question regarding online access to web pages in OS X 10.3, with
the supported Firefox or Safari browsers; these are outdated and there are
no new updates available to fix them. The Mac OS X 10.3(.9) Panther era
is over. You could get a Camino 1.6.11 browser and that may work OK with
Panther. You could probably get an old Firefox 2.0.0.20? version for 10.3.
    • *Camino v. 1.6.11* for Mac OS X 10.3.9:
    http://caminobrowser.org/releases/1.6.11/
    • *Firefox 2.0.0.20* (US english) for Mac OS X 10.3.9: (see .dmg file)
    ftp://archive.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/2.0.0.20/mac/en-US/
There may be a later (but not new) Flash player plugin from one of the
archived pages at Adobe, to help get web page Flash content to work.
This is a headache onto itself, even Leopard 10.5 owners have found
the Adobe Flash & Shockwave Player plugin support to be a big hassle.
Older players in the system, would have to be removed using the Adobe
player own Uninstallers, before a newer (antique) one could be installed
to replace it with; and no browsers can be in use, when doing this install.
So, the correct replacement has to be found & downloaded prior to that.
Streaming video content such as YouTube and some other web pages
with video within them, will see troubles in Panther 10.3.9 even with
the last (OS X 10.3.9 supported) level of player & browsers available.
The Camino browser is the last/newest browser, it is fairly good.
The need to have the Java updates installed, after Panther is upgraded
    to Combo 10.3.9, see Software Update app to get list of new items;
and then once those are downloaded/installed, run Disk Utility and its
'repair disk permissions' - and then, run Software Update again, etc.
The Adobe Flash player (and the Shockwave player) may among the
harder items to find in their Archived locations. These will not appear
in any automatic 'software update' application. They're sought after.
    • Troubleshoot Flash Player - Mac OS:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/865/cpsid_86551.html#ostype=m,
    • Find Flash player version:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/155/tn_15507.html
For the kinds of effort involved, to install Tiger 10.4(.11) and find all the update
parts for that, would be a better vintage computing experience; if you are able
to locate a retail version OS X 10.4 install DVD and while there, also find newer
version of iLife ('06) and iWorks 04/06; so Tiger would have some newer stuff.
Then get the later supported browsers, and more recent vintage Flash plugins.
Been some years since any of my computers ran Panther 10.3.9; and I held out
on installing Tiger 10.4 in my daily use machine (it still has tiger now) to be sure
Tiger was a good OS. Tiger is and was; but it also is fading fast. For my old G4
Macs, Tiger 10.4.11 is nearly ideal; but support is lagging due to 'progress.'
{That said, I'm not really ready for the PPC's last upgrade; I have the 10.5 DVDs
    and one of my four G4s is running Leopard 10.5.8; it does OK and it is different.}
Not sure of what else to say; except the process and details involved to run Panther
10.3.9 in the computer will take time; and finding the correct Flash player, and an
OK vintage browser, and having the system updated fully before adding extras, are
all important and to have this basic platform running well, still gives you an old OS.
You may need to spell out each of the computers specs, as brought up in a Discussion,
and their precise model and build vintage; so readers will know what you have there.
Maybe someone will offer in a reply, a few tips that I glossed-over, in this chapter...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Photoshop CS2 upgrade Panther to Tiger - Help please!

    Hi All,
I am doing a favour for my Aunt tomorrow and upgrading her G5 from Panther to Tiger.
She uses it mainly for Photoshop.
Is there anything i need to be wary of? I looked at the adobe web site and it seems to work on both systems, but do i need to download an update?
    Any advice, greatfully received!

Jacob, have a look at THESE posts.

  • My PDFs disappeared from iBooks after upgrading to iOS 8 on iPad Air

I've just upgraded my iPad air to iOS 8, via iTunes, and restore process. I had a fresh backup, so my iPad has all on it just as before except my PDFs in iBooks. There are just the purcheses in it. Is there any way to get my files back?

All; I had the same exact issue and there is a quick remedy for this which I'll outline below. Even the Senior level tech at Apple was unaware of this and I figured it out myself.
Once your iPhone is connected to iTunes and docked to your Mac, you'll note that there exists a tab, 2nd from right in iTunes 11.4 named 'Books.'
Select this tab and you'll note all of your purchased books and PDF's you've previously chosen to reside in iBooks app on iOS devices are displayed as a mirror image of what actually resides in your iBooks App that by default should result in your doc on the Mac. You must SELECT all or check individually each respective book or PDF document that you wish to sync with and reside on your iOS device.
Just as is the case with Music or Photos you may elect to manage your library of books and apps MANUALLY. In my case there are certain apps I know I want on my iPhone; conversely, there are apps I want to reside ONLY on my iPad and NOT on my iPhone 6. So this is how you control and manage this aspect of the "iBooks" app or program . It's easy!
    Good luck!

  • Ibook G3 upgrade to Tiger (Airport no longer works)

I have had my Ibook G3(384 MB ram, 20 GB HD, 600mhz, dual USB 2.0, 1 firewire, OS X 10.2, Airport)for over 2-1/2 years without any problem. I also have been using Netgear wireless router with 2 laptop pcs and 2 Apple computers (Imac G5 2Ghz, 2Gb ram, 20" and this Ibook G3) for over a year without any problem. Just recently bought Tiger to upgrade the Ibook. Everyhting seem to work except the Airport (wireless power bars remain dead). You would think that Tiger OS would make it simpler to set-up your computer after the upgrade. In this case the Airport just wouldn't work. It was perfectly fine with Jaguar. Why the upgrade??? It just made sense to upgrade since a lot of apple peripherals would comonly work with both the Imac G5 and this Ibook. Made a call to Apple tech support.. He was unable to help. He suggested to make an appointment with the "genius" corner at a local apple dealer.
Does anyone out there exeprienced this same problem I'm having after an OS 10.4 upgrade ?
    Thx.

  • IBook G4 - Upgrade or Buy New System

I need help making a decision: is it reasonable to upgrade my iBook G4 (RAM, operating system) (+bigger hard drive?); or do I need to abandon it and buy a newer system? My considerations are: 1) DC-inboard is probably flaky. Even with a new power supply and power adapter, the battery intermittently stops charging (the LED light goes out). I have to unplug it from the power strip and move the plug to a different outlet on the strip to get it going again. 2) I'm using Safari 1.3.2 and more web sites are thumbing their noses at my "unsupported/outdated" browser. 3) The other software I use is fairly basic: MS Word 98 (running under Classic); Reunion; Photoshop Elements 2.0; Appleworks 6.0. 4) The hard drive has about 15mb free. 5) It might be Christmas but I am seriously unemployed, which is why I have been waffling over this decision for months. Thanks for y'all's suggestions.

    Hi, UUWoman:
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
It might be Christmas but I am seriously unemployed
That's a difficult place to be. I know as some of my family are there. However, even with your tight finances, it seems to be that updating your computer will be more cost effective than purchasing a new or newer computer. Let's take your issues in order..
    1. We'll begin with the HDD. Your drive is dangerously full. Besides, your computer is now 5 years old. The average life of a laptop internal HDD is 3 to 5 years. So in addition to your drive being too full it is liable to fail without notice. I believe that is your top priority. You can buy a new HDD for $50 to $100. If you can install it yourself you will save $75 or so. The DC-in board can be changed at the same time. Cost less than $20.
Instead of Safari I suggest you try Camino 1.6.10, which looks like Safari, but it is faster, more stable and more powerful. Free download.
So, your costs so far would be, let's say $75 for a new HDD, $20 for the DC-in Board if you do it yourself, or add $75 for installation. For less than $200 you will have your computer functional again. You will need around $700 for a used MacBook or $1000 for a new one.
May I suggest that if you are unable to upgrade your drive and you have valuable information on it, that you back it up immediately. You can also try to lean things down, but with so little HDD free capacity you hardly have room for working. • Could I use iBook to upgrade iMac with dead CD/DVD drive?

I don't speak computer very well.......I was wondering if I could upgrade my old iMac by using the iBook as an external Hard drive. I tried using a firewire connection and holding down the T key. It worked for file transfer, but not upgrading the OS. Is it possible? I have the Tiger disc in the iBook.

    Yes, it should work.
You need the iMac to be the Target Disk in FireWire Target Disk Mode. This means holding down the T key on the iMac. Then start the Installation from the Tiger disc, selecting the iMac's hard drive (on the iBook's Desktop) as the drive for the installation.
If it is the Graphite iMac you are upgrading, be sure that the firmware is up-to-date.

  • UPGRADE  Panther or Tiger on Imac DV 400?

I am trying to determine which OS would be the better choice for my computer. I have been running 10.2.8 for a few years, but I just bought photoshop elements 4 and now I see I need 10.3 or better. I can use the educator discount from Apple for Tiger, or probably find an old retail disc for Panther, but I am wondering (for those who've tried with a similar system), which OS works better?
iMac DV 400 Mac OS X (10.2.x) original 10G hard drive, 576 ram

It really doesn't matter which one you decide to use. However, that original 10G hard drive must be getting a bit cramped. Without having the RAM up to full capacity (it will take two 512 MB chips), you are overly depending upon virtual memory, which needs lots of free hard drive space to write to. Unless you are doing frequent restarts and keeping lots of hard drive space freed up, you could start having problems, and possibly losing data.
Before considering upgrading the OS, it would be best to consider upgrading the hard drive and/or installing more RAM.
