Ibook G3 versus G4?

I'd like to get a new ibook. I've read all the logic board failure things here about the G3 versions. But besides that what were the main differences between the G3 and g4 version? Speed obviously, but what else? Or is a G4 the same basically as G3 with just a better CPU and speed?
Thanks,
ivnj

But down the road ( I mean life after 10.4). I mean G3 is already outdated despite all the hacks going around to install 10.4 onto outdated systems.
Apple has not sold a Mac with a G3 processor for quite some time, it's clear they changed their focus to the G4 processor two and a half years ago. However, Mac OS X 10.4 is supported on all the white "Dual USB" iBooks. No one here knows what the system requirements of the next version of Mac OS X might be.
So G4 will nere really be outdated right?
I'm not sure what you mean by "outdated". Apple will surely continue to support computers with G4 and G5 processors for some time, but they are switching the entire line of Macs over to the Intel processor right now. By the end of the year, Apple won't be selling any computers with G4 or G5 processors...
Keep in mind, the G3 iBook could be almost five years old. If you want to get a wireless card for it, that will cost you well over $100. It has a 10GB hard drive. Mac OS X 10.4 takes up about 3GB all by itself. That won't leave you much room for installing applications or saving many MP3s or photos. And you'll have to buy a copy of Mac OS X 10.4 for $129 to install on it. That iBook comes with NO Mac OS or system install CDs. It says it has 256MB of RAM, and one 128MB chip is soldered in, so you'll have to remove 128MB to add any more and you'll surely want to add at least 512MB if you want to run Mac OS X 10.4. So, you may save a few bucks up front but you'll have to spend another $300-$400 to make sure it's up-to-date, wireless and has enough RAM. If I were you, I'd definitely pay a little more upfront for a newer iBook.

  • IBook screen versus Powerbook

I own a powerbook 1ghz 12" and I'm looking to replace the screen. Do the powerbook and iBook share a screen? Can I pick one up off of one of those?

I've been looking around for a good price and I'm not completely impressed with what I have found. Especially when you can find a 95% complete powerbook for oh twice the price as just the lcd screen The installation wont be a problem since I've completely taken apart the computer.

  • HT5071 How does Apple decide when a book - created in iBooks Author - is free versus when it is paid?

I am considering creating a book made with iBooks Author but have a couple of unanswered questions. What determines how Apple chooses whether my book can make it into the ranks of being a paid book? In other words, I don't want to put a whole bunch of time and effort into creating a book that I want to sell, only to have Apple decide that the book can only be downloaded for free. Is there a way to guarantee that my book will be eligible to sell (as opposed to giving it away for free)? What are the requirements for creating a paid book in iBooks Author?

    There are no guarantees.
I'm not sure, however, that if Apple decided it wasn't fit for publishing under a paid contract that they would then turn around and accept it as free, sorry. There are too many details involved and I'd think if you want it in the store you'd work to make it acceptable all around.
See Apple - iTunes - Partner Programs - Book Publishers for publishing details.

  • AppleTV versus an old iBook with new iTunes hooked to TV?

Would it not be possible to take an old G3 500mhz iBook running 10.4 and with an airport card talking to an older Airport Base Station (802.11b) and put iTunes 7.6 on the G3 and download rented movies down to that and then have that hooked via the available video port to the RCA jacks my TV and achieve the same effect as an AppleTV (minus the on screen remote and all that jazz).

Many graphics cards can use a DVI to video adapter to connect to a TV. You can then use the "Present Movie" option in QuickTime Player's "View" menu to choose the display.

  • Airport in iMac versus iBook G4

    it's creazy,
my airport internetconnection is doing great with my iBook G4
the signal is strong (3 tot 4 bars)
and than my iMac ... that is a disaster
sometimess a connection is just not possible
and when it works I'am happy to have '1' bar
saying this, my iBook stays at less than a meter (1 m) from the iMac.
so, it isn't the express making the mistakes, it's the hard- and software in the iMac.

  • Requesting guidance on repair versus replace for iBook G4 (2005)

I'm looking for some guidance in deciding to upgrade/repair for my iBook G4, operating Mac OS X 10.4.11. I've gotten to the point where I don't seem to be able to run more than one application at a time (for example be online and listen to music at the same time), download more photos into iPhoto (get an outa short term memory message), or watch most video online. It seems that I can't get the most recent versions of some applications as well, for example can't upgrade to the most recent version of flash player, which rules out online TV. I'm not knowledgeable enough to be able to tell if I should just give up on this old workhorse or not. I'd be totally willing to spend $200 ish and have someone clean things up, delete useless stuff, etc, but I don't even know if that is worth it and I'd just be throwing money away. The only other problems it has is lousy battery (can't really be unplugged for more than 5 minutes) but I can live with that for my purposes. I'm open to suggestions about how to troubleshoot, ie decision matrix for the mostly clueless. Thanks.

Hi, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
I would strongly recommend upgrading to a newer MacBook or MacBook Pro.
Chances are the hard drive is full (or nearly so), and also getting old, since the very newest iBook is over five years old at this point.
If you start replacing things, you could soon approach the cost of a newer computer.

  • ITunes performance on MacBook versus iBook

I'm thinking about upgrading my 3 1/2 year old iBook for a new MacBook and I'm wondering how much of an improvement I'll get using iTunes. I've got about 23,000 songs on an external Firewire drive and there's typical an annoying delay loading my library and then occasional spinning multicolored orbs when I'm navigating the library.
Since using iTunes with AirTunes is one the main functions I use the laptop for, I'm wondering if the increase in processor power (1.07 to 2.4 GHz) and RAM (768 MB to 2 GB) on a MacBook will result in a significant improvement in performance.
Also, since my iTunes library is housed in an external drive, I'm wondering to what degree the slowdowns are caused by the speed of the Firewire connection. Would connecting my external drive to a laptop with Firewire 800 capability play a significant role in improving the overall performance of iTunes?
Yeah, I know these are subjective, largely unanswerable questions. I'm just looking for some comments based on everyone's experiences.

I think you'll find that the new MacBook will be dramatically faster.
I have a 10,000 song library and recently upgraded from a 1.5 Ghz 12" PowerBook. There is no longer a delay while loading the library, zero blips while browsing it, and even coverflow works perfectly. You'll be very impressed.

  • Apple Brand Versus Generic iBook Battery

I am looking to buy new battery for my iBook G4 (933MHz with two USB) and would like to hear from people who might have used generic battery. Are generic (3rd party) batteries are any better as are claimed?
After reading some posts in this forum, I understand that the batteries start deteriorate as soon as they are built. Is there a way I can make sure to get the batteries with latest manufacturing date from Apple or any other store? Appreciate any replies.
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
I used to always recommend buying a new battery from Apple's online store. It was my reasoning that Apple probably sells the most new batteries, so their supply should be the freshest.
Then someone accused me of being a shameless shill for Apple, so I don't say that as much any more, but it still sounds reasonable to me that this would be so.
I don't know if they are stamped with the manufacturing date. They are probably coded, but I don't know the code.
Here are some online links for battery choices:

  • Mac iBook G4 OS 9.1 Versus Iphone

The OS of my Mac (9.1) is not compatible with the Iphone ITunes Version (10.4). What can I do?

I've got the same problem, an old G4 running Tiger and have upgraded my iphone 3G on my pc at work to try and get rid of the glitches and slow-ups, so now they're not compatible (and the phone is just as slow as before). The upgrade wiped all of the music from the ipod on my phone and music I've bought through my phone today isn't showing up on there either. Anyone got any experience of that, will it show up ever or have I paid for something I'll never get?

  • Can you use Tiger On An Ibook g3 ?

My friend is trying to install tiger on his Ibook G3, he has 640mb of ram, 500 mhrz, and currently is running mac os 10. when he tries to install tiger is says this cannot be installed on this computer? can any explain or maybe help to get it working thx!!

Yes of course the swapfile is used for managing oversubscribed phyiscal memory. But it is totally incorrect to say the system's boot HD size must be larger than 20gig to accommodate virtual memory requirements. Typical UNIX system normally reserve swapfile space no larger than size of physical memory and at best maybe 1.5x to 2x physical memory. In Mac OS X case the swapfile starts off being 64MB (I believe) and as needed more swapfile partitions are created doubling each time - i.e., 64MB, 128MB, 256MB, etc. From my experience of running Mac OS X I've never ever seen more than 4 swapfile partitions which aggregate to some 960MB - and this was a very extreme case on my 4.5gig RAM PowerMac system.
So in response to your statement - "Therefore on the hard drive a real "swap" file does exist and that file can be quite large." I would agree that a real swapfile(s) does/do exist but disagree with you on these swapfiles taking up large amounts of space on the HD unless you consider 1gig of HD space to be large.
The swapfile is a simple mechanism for dealing with physical memory oversubscription. Various flavors of UNIX deal with virtual memory in different ways and those that manage 'real' memory versus 'paged' memory are very different.

  • Formatting lost importing Pages to iBooks Author

I having a problem importing a text file from Pages '09 to iBooks Author maintaining some formatting.
My Pages document has some text in bold and some in bold and italics in addition to normal text.  Everything is in Arial font in Pages.
When I import the document into iBooks Author all the bold italic text shows up as normal text.  About 75% of the bold only text shows up as bold and the rest as normal.  When the bold words are in the middle of other text, the bold format is maintained.  When the bold text is at the start of a line it shows up as bold or normal after the import.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Check the styles in use on the Pages side versus the styles applied on the iBA side....
Test to see if they are reliably honored....

  • Should I repair an Ibook logic board

I can have a 12 inch ibook 1.2ghz if I pay to repair it. It was just 14 months old, had been treated with great respect, when the logic board failed. Needless to say its owner had not purchased any extended warranty. Its owner purchased a new macbook and put the ibook in a drawer because he decided it was not worth the repair. I would use this ibook to replace my old Powerbook 3400c that died finally. I see on the forums that logic board failure is a problem with ibooks and that many people replace one only to have it fail. My question is whether it is worth replacing this ibook logic board? Is there a generic problem with the reliability of these logic boards, so that subsequent failure is a hit or miss thing? Or does their failure result from other factors so that an ibook that has one logic board fail may have an underlying cause that will lead to subsequent failures? Is this computer worth saving?

I see on the forums that logic board failure is a problem with ibooks and that many people replace one only to have it fail.Although there have been some failures the absolute majority of iBook G4 users have not had any type of logic board failure.
Is there a generic problem with the reliability of these logic boards...
    No
    Is this computer worth saving?
You will need to look at the cost of replacing the logic board versus buying a new/refurbished iBook G4 or new MacBook.

  • Can make iBook without previewing in iPad

hi, can I make an iBook by using iBook Author without having an iPad only on iMac, if it is possible let me know how
I have to make an iBook but I don't have iPad to preview it and I am having problem, is there any other way please tell me. thanks

Generally, I haven't had problems with rendering in IBA versus inside iBooks. Pretty much everything I've done in IBA looks exactly the same in iBooks. The exception are widgets. The rendering engine in iBooks differs from the one in Dashboard and Safari. In particular, fonts render differently (wider) in iBooks than in Dashboard, which often causes problems with text not fitting an output field in iBooks. Also, placement of .png images is sometimes out by one or two pixels, which requiires adjustment for iBooks.
But, if you stay clear of widgets, you have a good chance of getting there, or at least 99% of the way even without an iPad.

  • Airport Extreme good for MacBooks, bad for iBooks

I run a school with several Airport Extremes. The MacBooks connect fine to the wireless network, the iBooks are disconnecting all the time.
    The AE log shows:
    Jan 12 09:00:04 Severity:5 Associated with station 00:23:12:7f:17:63
Jan 12 09:00:05 Severity:5 Installed unicast CCMP key for supplicant 00:23:12:7f:17:63
    Jan 12 09:00:48 Severity:5 Disassociated with station 00:23:12:7f:17:63
This happens all the time for all of the (20) iBooks. I just showed 1 example here.
On this particular computer I was setting up management with WorkGroup Manager. After restarting I do not get the list of users, as the iBook tells me that Network Accounts are unavailable. If I log in with a local account and log off I do get the network accounts.
Even if the students log in with a local account they experience difficulties saving to a network share.

Personally, I turned off the AT&T gateway wifi, because it wasn't very stable for me.  I also do a lot of home networking between devices, i.e. iPad to PC, iPhone to PC, (Remote desktop...I'm lazy), laptop.  And stream from my PC to my ATV, wireless printer...etc.  The AT&T gateware is a Wireless G (54 Mbps), at least mine is, and the AE is n (300 Mbps) and Extreme-ly (pun-intended) stable.  I have never had to reboot it to get my wireless working, which was a frequent frustration of my Uverse gateway and other wireless routers.
In short, the main benefit I have found is stability and communcaiton between devices on my internal home network.  Your Intenet connection is based on what you subsribe and pay for with AT&T, which sounds like 3 Mbps and this will not change unless you incraese your Intenet package with Uverse.
I also like the AE for the ability to enable an isolated guest network when I have family over.  There is a free iPhone app that you can download that was created by Apple to configure your AE from your phone.  I use the guest network with a separate password to hand out to guests versus giving them my main wireless SSID and password.  The guest network can also be configured to not allow guests to see or connect to any other devices on your intenrnal network, which is more secure.

  • Big dilemma... MacBook or iBook?

Here's the situation. I need a laptop. It will be used as a secondary computer while I am on trips. I'll do graphic and web design work, some Flash, using Adobe Creative Suite 2 and Macromedia software. None of them are Universal Binaries, therefore they will run under Rosetta on Intel Macs.
I'll do all my heavy tasks on the PowerMac, so I don't really need a "Pro" laptop. My choices are: iBook and MacBook.
Have anyone tried to work with Adobe CS2 apps on MacBook? How are they performing?

If you need the fastest performance and best battery life I'd seriously consider finding an iBook on eBay to hold you over until these apps are UB. On my MBP versus my PB G4 photoshop loads slower, but once in it tends to be on par, but it's not faster. Also battery life isn't too hot. The macbook is said to have an hour or two more battery life than a MBP, but using those apps via rosetta on battery may kill it quicker than just using a iBook. If you do the eBay thing you may wish to get a powerbook instead, though they also have less battery life, but they do have faster ram and processors.
Again I believe buying a macbook is the best choice as it will be much faster once these apps go UB. If you need a new book and want one with a G4 just do yourself a favor and don't buy it new as you'll be wasting your money away.
