IBook G3 video skipping (slow computer msg in VLC) & crashing with mplayer

Each time I tried to play an avi file with mplayer, mplayer will start up and then crashed immediately i.e. it quitted. If I tried to open the avi file with Quicktime (I have the codec installed), Quicktime hanged. I can play the file with VLC player, but the video skipped and error messages appeared, saying that the computer is too slow. There were no other programs opened at that time.
I am running 10.4.4 with QT 7.04. I have tried to boot from an external HD (cloned from the internal HD) with the same problems. I have also reformatted the iBook HD, reinstalled Tiger and the same problem occurred. Is this a hardware issue with the iBook? Using a new user made no difference.
I have also zapped the PRAM but did not solve the problem.
What else can I try? Thanks.

Sorry I wasn't around yesterday (believe me, I really would rather not have been on Iowa interstates in a snowstorm).
The message I believe you were getting was the one that said something like "an error has occured causing more than five frames to skip" blah blah blah. And it gives you an option to "suppress" future errors for the video, right?
If so, that's because we are running on about as lowly a machine as can be handled by the program
I like VLC because it can do where other programs on the iBook can't. But even then it needs some help. Unfortunately, the documentation I used to set up VLC was included in the installer for another application and I've since deleted the readme (heck, I readit). So, I've done the next best thing. I went through the preferences and tried to remember the few changes so I could pass them on.
One (under "interface") was to increase the verbosity from the default to either of the other numbers. I really can't remember what it does, but I do know it was recommended when the CPU was choking)
The other was under the misc. tab, and was the setting for VLC priority. For some reason mine is set to and obscenely high NEGATIVE number (like -100).
Now...you still are going to get skipping. I have a hidden dock, and if I bring it up, I get skips. If I grab the controller and drag it, I get skips...you get the idea
When you say they are AVI's on a DVD, I assume that means they are not the normal DVD type files. It might be a bit annoying to try, but could you move one to the HD and then try playing with it in the other apps?
My thought here is that the computer is using so many resources reading the files from the DVD that it is causing issues for QT, mplayer, and (to a lesser extent which is why I love it...)VLC. Try that and let us know if it stops the problem you noted.
...you said kernel panic. Is the whole "screen goes dim and a message in 10 languages" scenario playing out, or is the iBook just freaking out and shutting down the get info panel. In other words, do you need to reboot when this happens or not?

Acrobat 8 is an older version .It might not be compatible with Windows 7 .
Try upgrading it to the latest version .i.e Acrobat 11.0.10 or any higher versions than Acrobat 8.
Many folks have gotten AA8 to work on Win7. I have only heard of one report suggesting that AA8 will work on a 64-bit system, and I am not sure about the report. If you have a 64-bit system, you will likely need to upgrade, though if you play around you might be successful in finding a solution (Adobe will not help since it is not a certified platform, but some folks here might if they have been successful).
In any case, after installation you will need to do the updates for proper operation. If you can not do them from within Acrobat, you may have to download them fromhttp://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=1&platform=Windows. You need to install the updates in ORDER unless indicated other wise. Reboots can typically be saved until the last update is installed.

Itunes 10.5 crashes with no error when trying to play any music, video, or import/scan from the library folder on the compter with Windows 7 Pro.

Fresh install with all older itunes un-installed as well as other Apple software.
Now cannot get any songs, videos, or even scan library folder for songs to work on the computer.
itunes just simply crashes with no error comments.
This is itunes 10.5 on a Windows 7 Pro system.

Same here, though on XP. Have tried cleaning registry, reinstalling, deleting preferences. Created a new user with no library and I have the problem there, too, so it's not the library.
Is there no one to call about this??

Video skipping during normal DVD playback

I have a brand new 20" iMac with SuperDrive. I recently popped in a DVD (straight out of the plastic wrap) and tried to play it. The DVD plays for the most part but every 5 to 20 seconds the video skips/freezes while the audio continues to play without interuption.
I've played this same DVD in my 4 year old PC laptop and works fine, so its not the DVD. What could be wrong with my brand new iMac? Any thoughts?
The whole reason I got this new beaut of a computer is so that I wouldn't have to watch movies on a 12" laptop...

I came here to post and then saw yours. I have a similar situation in that I attempted to watch a brand new out of the box DVD on my iMac 20" G5 (revision A). I have recently upgraded to Tiger and iLife 05. I did both upgrades on my iBook G4 also.
So, the video "skips" on the G5. My "skip" is that the audio seems to trail the video and that the characters seem to jerk and drag - you can see the eyes blink and unblink.
But - the same DVD works fine on my iBook as well as the DVD players connected to two different tv sets.
How do we notify Apple of this problem? I can live without watching a DVD on my G5 - but I'm really curious as to what the problem might be and hope to hear from others.

Slow computer after logicboard replacement/ any way to retrieve 18 month old receipts

I purchased a Macbook Pro in August of 2008 and have been generally pleased with it. About a month ago it stopped turning on so I brought it in to the Apple store. They claimed that the video card was fried and that they would need to replace the entire logic board. The computer has been out of warranty for a little while now so I was seriously debating shelling out the $330 to replace the logic board. The genius guy assured me that it would run like new once it was replaced so I went ahead and did it. When I got it back, I soon noticed that everything was running slower. Over the last month, the computer has gotten so slow its almost unusable, so I started snooping into the computer a little bit. I noticed that I had 2 gb of memory. I think I originally installed 4 gb of memory but I cant be sure. I checked for the receipt but its nowhere to be found. Not too surprising considering how long its been sicne I originally bought the computer. I looked up the standard specs on everymac.com and found that 2 gb was the baseline. I am pretty sure Ive upgraded the memory on every computer I've ever gotten which further deepens my suspicion. Now, I dont know for sure if I actually had 4 gb of memory and I dont want to start ranting and raving at the apple store about how the evil repairmen stole 2 gb of memory from me if I am not sure. Does anyone know of a way to check what was originally in my computer? If it turns out im simply forgetful, does anyone have any ideas about the slow computer following logicboard replacement? Windows Vista + iTunes Video = skipping

I have a computer with Windows Vista and I can't get iTunes video to work properly. The sound will be fine, but the video skips and stops and then finally I get an error message saying that iTunes has to close. Please tell me that there is some kind of solution. I have updated my Vista software, my itunes software and anything else that I can think of.

First Update your iTunes Version to the newest one!
Got this issue with older iTunes when Vista was new.
If its still there check the CPU Usage and RAM Usage with the Task Manager (STRGALTDEL)

Itunes videos skipping

I have read a few posts already with this same sort of question, but none of them seem to have been answered yet.
I just bought a new computer last week--> it's an HP dv6000, with Windows Vista...
I transferred all my music and my purchased Itunes episodes and videos, but the videos aren't working properly.
The audio is fine, but the video skips and is very choppy, and it hurts my eyes to watch.
I have tried updating my video driver, and a few other things that Itunes suggested, but they still skip.
What can I do to make them work?

Replying to my own post to add that it is not just the sound that skips, but the picture. It seems very random.

Streamed video skips AFTER fully buffered

Hi All!
First I'm running Win XP SP3, IE8 and FlashPlayer 11 with a 4Mb ADSL connection.
When I stream video it starts fine while it is buffering, but as soon as the buffer is complete, the video begins to skip or jump, trying to keep up with the audio. The lag time increases as the file continues to play starting from a second at a time to 10 seconds and more depending on the length of the video.
It doesn't matter where the video comes from and oddly enough it doesn't happen all the time maybe 60 to 75%.
It doesn't matter if I let the video completely buffer before playing it, it just skips from the beginning.
I've tried reinstalling Flash11, which did not help, the happened with Flash 10 as well.
I don't have a buffering problem. Videos buffer fine, (OK when online traffic is high, buffer is slow, but this is not related to the skipping which only starts AFTER the video has finished buffering.
I've been scouring the internet for related issues and haven't found anything, so I'm posting this here.
I think there must be some setting on my system that's interfering somehow, but what that is I have no idea.
I hope someone out there does!

Videos skipping audio and video

I have videos on my computer that work perfecly using quicktime but when i use itunes its skips alot

update the movies work fine on my iphone as well but the same movie does not work in itunes

Exporting on Quicktime slows computer down.

Even with 4 GB RAM, and 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, simply exporting a few Quicktime videos slows the computer to a crawl, even with very few stuff being open....

I've had quite a few windows computers that I have installed QT in fact 4 since last winter and have never expierenced any slow down.

I have the macbook pro and I am trying to figure out how to play my uploaded videos in slow motion.
I am using the quicktime player version 10.1 and I am only seeing the ability to playback, pause, play, enlarge screen and fast forward through my videos.
If it is not possilbe to get the videos to play in slow motion using quicktime, I would appreciate suggestions on software that I could get. Nothing complicated, I just really need that slow motion feature! Thank you!

This capability is dependent on the media player. QT X.1 does not have either a slow or fast motion playback feature control. The closest you can get is holding down the right arrow key in which case the "slow motion" spped will be dependent on your computer's CPU power and the clip's frame rate.

The QT 7 Player (free) can play files with sound between 0.5 and 3.0 times normal speed. The VLC player (free) has a wider range of speed variations with sound but audio usually drops out at below 0.25 times normal playback speed. The TV player also has three slow speed (and fast speed) playback options but I don't know their exact speeds and it is without sound.
