Ibook G3 will not start at all

I downloaded OS X 4.11 and Quicktime updates a few days back. The computer rebooted after installation, and I used it for a few more hours then shut down. Since then, it won\t turn on at all. No chimes, no grey or blue screen--just no response. I have tried most of the solutions suggested on these pages: taking out the battery <which is fully charged>, resetting PRAM and PMU, various keyboard combinations--but nothing has worked. Of course the computer is not under warranty and I am overseas in Turkey, so I'm skeptical about getting any hardware fixed from here. Any help you could offer would be appreciated. For now I am just resigned to waiting several days and hoping it works again...

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Resetting the PMU does work for some people. It is the first troubleshooting measure an Authorized Apple Service Provider would do (or recommend), so recommending it here is absolutely a proper thing to suggest.
If it doesn't work, that's too bad, but if, as sometimes, it does, hooray! We would be remiss in not suggesting that people with various problems try it, since it can be a solution for many problems.
Just because it didn't work for you doesn't mean that we should stop suggesting it to others for whom it may, indeed, work.

    Hello, Jdragone.
Thanks for the question.  Start with completely uninstalling iTunes and all of it's components in the order specified in the article below.  Once this is done, download and install iTunes.

  • IBook G3 will not start up-hangs up at blue screen

My IBook G3 will not start up. I can get the gray apple screen with pinwheel and then after a really long time it will go to a blank blue screen. A couple times it went to the login screen instead but in the user id it says "other" and when I try to enter my username and password it won't recognize me. I am a college student and one of the Apple geniuses here did a check of my hard drive and it checked out okay. We were not able to get it to start up in safe mode; it seemed like it was starting in safe mode but then it came to the login screen and would not allow me to login with my usual information. I was able to start up in single user mode and run fsck which found a couple things and after another fsck it said everthing was fine. But, it still gets hung up at startup. When I try to boot from the OS X installation CD it doesn't seem to be booting up with it, it only goes to the screen to install OS X. According to the directions on the Apple support site when I insert the CD and start up holding down the "c" key it should start up and then I should be able to repair permissions but I can't get that far.

There are many things that can happen when you bounce an iBook off the floor.
It sounds like something may have been knocked loose, perhaps a connection? Probably it is going to take an analysis by a technician to tell you exactly what's going on. I have links for firms on both coasts, but you should be able to find an Apple Authorized Service Provider (or just someone who advertises that he/she works on Macs) in a metropolitan area like Chicago just by grabbing your Yellow Pages or local classifieds. I would think you would have a fairly competitive market there. Maybe you can find someone who does free diagnostics who will tell you what it will cost so you can decide whether its worth the cost to repair it.
    Good luck.

  • My HP laptop will not start at all.

I have a HP G6000 laptop that will not start at all , i turn on the power and only see the blue light on , the screen is still black , minutes later my laptop restarts , but again with only the blue light on with the screen still black , anyone got any suggestions on how to resolve the problem , thanks.

    found a solution ! , not pertinent though :
    1. turn laptop on
2.hold the " FN " key and run your finger across all of the top keys ( F1 F2 ... )
    3. after a few seconds while doing this your laptop will turn on , worked for me

  • Satellite L450D-13U will not start at all

Yesterday the screen on my L450D when blank and then the machine closed down.
Now it will not start at all.
There are no lights on display when the power cable is attached.
When the start button is pressed all that happens is there is a momentary flash of the On light (not sure if that's the right name) and the DVD light.
You can also hear the fan starting up but that immediately goes off.
    That's all that happens.
I've tried without the battery, tried discharging the battery.
    Has my laptop just died?
Is there any hope or should I just move on?

I will agree with checking your RAM.
The best way to do so before you buy anything is to check each stick.
Remove the battery and AC cord, and press the power button several times to make sure the system is fully discharged.
Once it is discharged, ground yourself and pull the RAM cover. Remove the top stick ONLY. Plug the laptop back in, and try to boot it.
If you get nothing, swap the stick you pulled for the one that is still in the system, and try again.
After that, if it still does not want to boot up, take it to a shop. It could be something as simple as the BIOS battery being dead, or a burnt out power mosfet.

  • Firefox will not start at all ... not even profile mananger will start

After an auto overnight reboot initiated by a Windows update (XP 5.1 SP3) Firefox will not start at all ... not even Profile Manager ... all that happens is a few seconds of hourglass on the cursor and then nothing ... this is happening on two different computers at the same time ... identical symptoms ... any advice?
== After overnight reboot by auto Windows update

I had the problem after I restarted the computer when Firefox indicated that was needed to install updates. After that every attempt to start Firefox resulted in no response at all. I went to my program list and found Firefox Safe Mode. That started OK. I then closed it. After that Firefox started OK.

  • Finder folder with question mark, now will not start at all!!!

Hey guys, I was working in Avid and i opened up Quicktime, all of a sudden i got a crash log. So i restarted, upon restart i got the finder folder with the blinking question mark. I tried restarting with the OS9 cd by holding down the C button, no luck there. So i moved onto the next step, resetting the PRAM, no luck there (just sat on black for numerous minutes until i let up, then the folder came back). Then I moved onto resetting th PMU, now it will not start up at all. I restart, and all i see is a black screen, nothing. Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance.
The machine im workin on is a Powermac G4 (quicksilver), OS9, 1.5 G Ram, machine bases around Avid Editing system
    Rhyno

    Ok let me clarify this.
1)system crashed restarted and got the folder with the ?
    2) tried to boot from the OS 9 CD no luck? it did not boot?
3)reset pram and still the flashing ?
    4) Reset the PMU chip and the mac is dead won't start up at all?
    a couple of ideas too...
did you press the pmu button more than once?
Check to make sure the power cord is plugged in correctly etc.
Check the Pram battery to see if it might be dead it should read between 3.3v and 3.7v
also try to restart the computer without other devices plugged into it (USB Firewire, keyboard, even monitor.

  • Firefox will not start at all

New versions of Firefox will not start and only bring up the crash reporter. I've tried starting in safe mode, I've deleted/created new Profiles and I've uninstalled/installed Firefox over and over. I can still download 28.0 and it has no problem opening. Below is the latest Crash ID from 35.0

  • My MacBook Pro will not start at all., My MacBook Pro will not start at all.

The only previous problem was a few days ago the colors on my display looked a little off/fuzzy. I immediately restarted and the problem didn't return. Then today, I had it shut but when I opened it it was off and will not start again. It sounds like it's on as there's a slight fan noise, also the charge lights go up to fully charged. But there is no noise or anything when I try to start it.
I'm not sure  if this is a coincidence, butt I started using a new charger today. It was second hand but the same one as before.
It was purchased in early 2012, not sure what OS.  Any help is appreciated!

  • Firefox crashes - will not start at all

If I try and start Firefox all I get is the Mozilla Crash Reporter, if I try and restart Fireofox from the Crash Reporter screen all I get presented with is the Mozila Crash Reporter again. If I try and submit a crash report the Crash Reporter states "there was a problem submitting your report", hence no crash ID available.
The issue started when I updated my old, maybe version 5, Firefox with version 9, since then I have been unable to start Firefox.
I have tried unistalling Firefox, including deleting personal settings, and restarting the PC in between deleting Firefox and attempting to reinstall it. None of this works. Firefox will also not start in safe mode.
Mozilla Crash Reporter details added to the below Troubleshooting Information info box.

  • IBook G3 will not start-up from 10.4.6 Install disc

I have a 700 MHZ iBook G3 with 640 MB RAM and it runs without problems on 10.3.9
I would like to upgrade the system software to Tiger, but any attempt to start-up from the 10.4.6 install discs that came with my Intel MacBook result in the grey screen with the power icon that reads in multiple languages "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button."
Additionally, that message is partially obscured by 24 other lines of code, starting with "panic(cpu 0 caller 0x002E0BF4): Unable to find driver for this platform: "Powerbook4, 3"." and ending with "panic: We are hanging here. . ."
Am I doing something wrong? Are there other methods of achieving this?
If the 10.4.6 install discs that came with my MacBook are unusable to update the iBook OS, what are the other options to upgrade it to a version of Tiger?
    thank you!

On ebay, there seem to be mainly single DVD full-install 10.4 versions which indicate "Includes Xcode 2" on the DVD.
there was only one 4-disc set I found and it states:
"By default, Apple only sold Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger on DVD. When Tiger first launched, Apple offered the opportunity to trade the DVD in the retail box for a CD set using a media exchange program. Most Mac OS X Tiger installer discs sold on eBay are model-specific, that is, they shipped in the box with a specific Mac. This is the full retail set that could only be obtained through the Apple media exchange program that no longer exists. It is difficult if not impossible to get this CD set from Apple today."
Is this the specific version I need to properly install Tiger on my G3 iBook or will one of the single DVD full-installs be sufficient? (this box set is alot more expensive than the single DVDs)
    thanks again for the help!

  • MacBookPro 2.3GHz Intel Core i7 will not start-at all

My MacBook will periodically just not start. It is more likely to do this if it has been off for while (as in a week) or after the battery has run low. I have to keep pressing the start button. I will sometimes press and hold and nothing will happen, or I might try a "quick" press down. Eventually the unit will power up.
Yes the powercord is attached and has the "green" connected/charge light on.
This is very disconcerting because sometimes it wont come on at all for a long while (as in over an hour of trying). Once it starts up it loads up all programs fine.
I would really apprecaite any recommendations before escalating to product support. (It is currently on and running)

The symptoms that you describe suggest a bad switch.  The best option is a trip to the Apple store genius bar for a free definitive diagnosis.
    Ciao.
