IBook G3 Won't Chime - But Keyboards Lights are ON

My ibook was working fine, then I closed it so I could bring it into another room and then the computer became unresponsive w/ a black screen. I tried resetting the power management as instructed in the Apple Support and the only thing that happens is the power seems to be on because the green keyboard lights light but it's as if the computer never boots (no chimes and cannot hear volume up and down noise and cannot open the disk drive). Any suggestions? I've had the logic board replaced TWICE. Highly annoying! The last time the computer was sent back to me as a clean slate so I lost everything. I don't think it's the Logic board this time though because the two times that the logic board went bad, I could always here the reboot chimes and the volume indicator sounds. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
ibook G700mhz   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   Logic Board Replaced TWICE

Have you tried resetting the PMU?
The PMU (Power Management Unit) controls the charging function, so resetting it may help.
If resetting the PMU doesn't help, then I would recommend trying a known good adapter.
The iBook is acting like my husband's did when the power input (DC-in) board was damaged, so if resetting the PMU didn't help and a new adapter doesn't work, either, you may be looking at needing to replace the power input board (the part of the iBook which includes the adapter port).
Please let us know how things go for you.

  • Trackball and keyboard light are off

I have a blackberry curve 8310 on AT&T and just downloaded and installed the new OS 4.5.  Everything is working fine but I noticed the trackball and keyboard lights are not on and I cant figure out why.  Anyone know?

I'm having the exact same problem, upgraded to 4.5 and now the trackball and keyboard won't light up(although they do light up when booting the fone). What did you do to fix this?

  • My mac keyboard lights are not working

    hi..
i m using mac pro 13... suddenly lights of my the keyboard is went off...i restart the machine by nothing happen.. the problem is still same only..plz help me out...

What do you have in System Preferences, Keyboard under "Adjust keyboard brightness..."?
What happens when you push F6 to increase the keyboard light intensity?
Normally, if you have that checked, the keyboard lights only come on if the ambient light level is sufficiently low.  They go out when the light level gets high enough.  (Sorry if I am stating the obvious.)  The sensor is at the top of the display, where the camera is.  If you cover the camera lens, do the lights come on?  (You may have to turn up the light intensity with F6.)
    Try unchecking that preference box.
If nothing else works, try resetting the NVRAM.
If that doesn't work, you probably will have to take your machine in for servicing.

  • IBook dead (no chime, no keyboard light, nothing)

    Hi there,
I have been reading for a while the posts regarding the Logic Board problem on iBooks.
I wonder if someone might give me a hand on this.
My iBook @ 700 MHz died last year, I did not fixed b/c it is really expensive.
Now, the thing that makes me wonder if the problem is the Logic Board is that mine does absolutely nothing when turned on, no matter if leave the battery or not, and nothing happens after PMU reset, etc.
Does anyone know if for instance, the HDD dies, when the iBooks boot, do you get to see the Apple grey background, or hear the chime?
    Thank you very much.

It's not a power issue, then, if the iBook and
    adapter are charging the batteries.
It's possible that it may be the power switch
    itself.

Thanks for the reply, but nothing. I still can't get nothing out of the iBook. Tried all the steps listed on the page, and the iBook does nothing at all, except charging the batteries when plugged in
Any ideas what should I try next? There is sort of an Apple store here in Buenos Aires, but, if the Apple Care people in the USA told me that the fix would be something like 500 $, here they will charge 3 times that.

  • Blank screen on start up, no chimes or keyboard light

MacBook Pro 2008 is very temperamental on start up or waking from sleep. Screen stays black, no lights come on keyboard & no chimes can be heard.
I have tried booting from CD & all the other usual suggestions. Some times I can leave it a day and it boots up other times I leave it 3 days before it boots up. It works perfectly well when it's running but not sure when this will be. I can hear the fan and hard disk working away when I turn it on & it has new battery & power supply. Anyone else experience this problem & have fixed it? It's very annoying now..

Try resetting the SMC. If that does not help, take it in for diagnosis.

  • Ibook g4 won't boot, but hard drive seems fine

    I have a ibook g4,800mhz. osx 10.4.8
On start up i get the folder & question mark. I have tried the following.
    1) i booted with an os install disk. disk utilities reported the drive was ok it but couldn't see a disk partition so disk first aid had nothing to do.
    2) next i ran disk warrior which had the same probably, it could see the hard drive, reported that the drive was functioning, but saw no partition.
    3) finally i gave up and reformatted the disk, and re installed an os. this worked for 48 hours at which time the problem came back.
    4) i can put the laptop in firewire mode connect it to a desktop and access the hard drive. I can format the disk using apple disk tools, i can install an new os, but after all this it still won't boot from the internal hd.
    5) I reset the pram. also tried starting up with the option key down .. no hard drive is visible when i do this.
So the hard drive seems to work ok. Two different disk utilities see the hard drive and think its functioning ok. OSx installer runs without complaint, but the &$%! won't boot from the hd.
    Anybody got any suggestions?

...this worked for 48 hours at which time the problem came back...
This is the time period that I was commenting on. If something was used during that time that corrupted the OS, it would cause the situation you are in.
If everything is perfect with the OS then something is wrong with the hard drive or the motherboard's interface to the hard drive.

  • Droid Display Dead, but keyboard lights up....Disgusted

I bought the Droid when it first came out for my son last christmas (Dec 15, 2010 to be exact) He was using it in the car as a GPS and when he got home and brought the phone in, the display was dead.  Called Verizon and went to the store, they looked at it and said NOPE, nothing we can do....it was 9 days after the warranty, the phone is beat up. They didn't even have a technician look at it. Well we do have phones for use, not to just look at.  Anyone else having display problems, now no phone, and I had no insurance.  2 year plans are the worst that is all I can say!

I just experienced a very similar problem as I was heading to work. My Droid was fully charged once I got in to work I pressed the power button to turn on the screen and make a call but nothing appeared on the screen, the menu, back button, search button lit up but nothing on the screen. I took out the battery waited about a half hour put it back in tried to turn it on and again the screen remained black, nothing appeared on the screen. I even tried a hard reset and that too resulted in a blank screen.
Once my shift is over I will call customer service when they open and see what happens.
I'm even thinking about reverting back to the flip phone and stay away from smartphones, seems too much of a pain.

  • Wrt54g only have 2 wireless put of 4 but all lights are on

I was having a connection problem the other day which was weird. So, I went to check on my wireless router and ALL 4 lights were lit. I unplugged it and rebooted and every thing went back to normal. Now it has happened again. Are people using my wireless connection?? Or is my box DYING? If I have my location set a home does that mean they can access my computer??  I have one thing hard wired and a wireless card in my laptop. I had set up a password with my router before, but maybe it got erased when I upgraded to a new laptop..?? I'm not sure if that could change it but I haven't deleted it my self. I'm not sure how to make sure that its there.. I found where it says WEP ..... and key 1. Also, I have SSID to something other then linksys. My network type is access point and network availability is All users (not sure what that means). How can I make sure I'm password protected?? ARGH! My head hurts! any info would be awesome!

So,all the four  Ethernet light lit-up although only one computer is connected....Try to hard-reset the router for 60 seconds,Power Cycle the router and check the status of the light on the router.
If the light status on the router is OK then, open the router setup page by typing 192.168.1.1 and re-configure the router..If you get the same result after resetting the router then, try to upgrade the router's firmware..
You can download the firmware from www.linksys.com/downloads..On the linksys setup page,Click on Administration tab to upgrade the firmware..

My Macbook Pro don't start anymore. The powerlight is flashing about 2 seconds.

I have resetted all RAMS as described in the apple support.
Before the actual situation, the computer hang up in iPoto with a flickering screen.
The crash-report mentiond somewhat about a read-error in a ?-RAM.
I could create a second partition and I wanted to install OSX-Lion, when the message came that the computer restarted, it didn't start and nothing could help.
Do sombody know what I can do to solove the problem?
    Sincerely macsmbw

I'm having precisely this problem myself. For what it's worth, my macbook suffered a pretty devastating crash immediately before this happened. (I was playing a game and it completely crashed during play and shut down.)

  • Keyboard lights will not stay off no matter what I do on my MacBook Pro. Why??

I've got a MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo.
I have ALWAYS left the keyboard lights off for the 4 years I have had it.
But lately, no matter what settings I change or what I try, I cannot PREVENT the keyboard lights from coming on when I've been away from the computer for a long period of time.
Automatically illuminate keyboard in low light is NOT checked in System Prefs. I have reset the PRAM, and left the laptop off with the battery off for hours in hopes of resetting it.
Nothing will work. Almost every time I am away from my computer for hours, I come back and the keyboard lights are on. And when I tap the keyboard light brightness buttons, it just gives me the buster symbol (white circle with a line through it) on screen below the keyboard light brightness indicator for a few seconds. Somehow continuing to tap those buttons eventually makes the lights just turn off. Or holding my hands over the whole keyboard to trigger the sensor can suddenly allow me to control the on/off brightness with those buttons again. In which case I try turning the lights off completely or turning the brightness so low that it goes off.
But once again, when I wake up in the morning, I find the keyboard lights on.
Now the ONLY thing that has changed since this started happening is that I added a new User account. BUT that should asbolutely not cause this problem. I have checked to see if the System Preferences for the keyboard lights in the new user account were causing a conflict, but no, they are exactly the same as my main account.
I have not tried deleting the user account yet because I actually want it and would find it very hard to believe that was the culprit. It's just the only thing I can think of that changed shortly before this started happening.
Is there anything else I can do!?! Is there some preference file that controls the lights somewhere that could be corrupt that I need to trash?
Thank you for any help anyone can provide. This one has stumped me good.

From reading up of other forums with the same problem i have come up with two reasons why it is doing that.
first try doing a smc reset
if that does not work then it is a hardware error. Many people have had the problem and they have not been able to fix it so good luck

  • W530 Keyboard light - unusual problem & hack requested.

I am unable to turn on either the upper-frame light or either of the two keyboard illumination levels with the Fn+Space keys. There are already a number of forum requests as to how the keyboard light is turned on. That is not what this request is about. The Fn+Space combination worked fine for the past year+ and I am well familiar with its toggling operation. Then one day the Fn+Space combination stopped working, never to work since.  One immediately is inclined to think, well, the light burned out. But that is not so, for everytime the laptop is rebooted, both the frame edge light and the full keyboard light are fully illuminated every time. But that illumination is only brief and then the lights go out once the reboot sequence continues. Something having to do with the actual mechanical operation of the Fn+Space key combination has stopped working. To be clear, the Fn key and the Space key all play their other normal functions and roles without a hitch. I want to get my Fn+Space combination functionality back again. That is what this message is about. I'm thinking there is a hacker out there that could do a work-around on this problem. It seems likely to me that the Fn+Space key combination is turning on/off a register key somewhere. If I could access that register key and set the flag appropriately, then the light should turn on, since I know the illumination feature is working from the reboot sequence. Is there anyone reading this that would know where that register key is and how to safely access it and switch it on to stay on? That is, to say, safe for a non-hacker to perfoorm? Fingers crossed,Rich Young

Is your system otherwise stable and reboots reliably?
    Then use this installer:
    https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds029169
Try to close every background program (especially those that interface with hardware like TPFanControl, as well as anti-virus), and turn off your internet. This should reduce the risks.
If you want to be absolutely safe, and have spare CD-Rs on hand, use the bootable CD method:

  • How can I get my keyboard lights to come on?

How can I get my keyboard lights to come on? When I press the button to turn them up higher, I get a sign meaning I cannot do that. Any help?

    MegoStello,
There are a few situations when you won't see the keyboard light up as much as you might. If you're in a bright place or outside, the keyboard backlight won't come on. If you're on battery, your MBP may reduce power consumption by cutting off your backlit keyboard.
On the other hand, you'll nearly always see the backlit keyboard if you're plugged in. In short, your MBP tries to manage your power usage according to your needs.
MegoStello, if you found this info moderately useful, let me know in this thread. That's how I know if my info is what you need!

  • MBP 2010 had Mobo replaced - Now keyboard lights not working?!?!

    Hi,
I have just picked my MBP 2010 back up from the apple store, after it having its main logic board replaced. After having it back home for a few hours, I have only just noticed that the keyboard back lights are no longer functioning. By turning the brightness up with the f6 key, it brings up the HUD which shows the brightness bar going up, but the lights are still off.
I have tried to go into the settings and turn off the option that says automatically illuminate keyboard in low light to see if that fixed the issue, but no success. I have also installed lab tick, but this still did not get the backlight functioning.
The last thing I tried was a SMC reset. I performed this twice but to no avail.
I have tried to search the forums for alternative reasons as to why they would not be working, but cant find anything.
Can anyone advise me as to what my next step should be? I would like to try to fix this myself rather than take it back to the apple store, as it is about an hours drive away (last resort). I have read that there is a cable that connects the keyboard backlight, and this could become loose during maintenance. Is this easy to find / check ?
    Thanks

Just incase people have the same issue down the line, I managed to fix this problem myself within 5 minutes.
I found a guide on ifixit.com for my model of macbook and then looked at the logic board replacement section (as this is what repair it had been to apple for).
I found the section regarding the power ribbon for the keyboard lights, and after taking my mac apart, I realised that they had not connected the ribbon, and it was still left unattached under one of the fans.
Carefully connecting this back and then putting the fan back solved the problem. So a simple 5 minute job has saved me a long trip back to see apple.
Thanks for your help anyway guys!
