IBook g4 (04) sudden death, plugged in

My wife's iBook has begun to power down without notice on battery-only AND on power. When it shuts down, the line-in remains gree-or-orange lit, depending on the battery's charge state.
I do not recall if the battery was subject to the recall and replacement. However until this issue surfaced within the past two weeks, she was getting four to six hours out of the battery.
I don't have her specs handy, but thought I'd post in hopes of a couple opinions.
I note a plethora of power-related issues in here, but mostly appearing to affect only iBooks off power, not both on and off. Additionally, given that the the battery appears good and appears to charge, does this problem point to a failure somewhere downstream of the power system?
My thought for next step is essentially to cart it over to the Apple Store for a diagnostic. Thoughts?

Interestingly, I had some similar issues not quite two years ago:
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=3595408#3595408
but foolishly I neglected to post my resolution. I suspect we just bought a new battery.

  • Output error, sudden death..

Having a problem with my output jack.
The output worked perfectly with headphones and speakers but suddenly now I realize the jack is dead.
Tried to connect a set of JBL Creature II speakers but they don't work, work perfectly with both Ipod and MacBook Pro though so nothing wrong with the speakers. Then I've tried diferrent kinds of headphones and headsets all with no sound. The input seems dead too.
In System preferences > Sound everything seems correct, it switches normally from internal speakers to headphones when I plug in/plug out, definitely no problem with the internal speakers but no sound what so ever from the output and input.
Usually I use a Bluetooth headset and havn't been using other speakers than the internal ones for a while so I got a little surprised now.. Worked just perfectly some month ago with a set of Creative Gigaworks T3.
No "weird" system changes done, nothing special I noticed that could have caused it. Just.. Sudden death?
Is this some kind of software problem? π_π
    What do you think guys?

Thank you very much for your concern and sorry for the delay, I've been buried in other stuff lately..
Anyway, nothing with the output key works for me. Not sure though what exactly you're telling me to do hehe, just click on it and keep the output key down?
Not the 'output' key. Press and hold the OPTION key while clicking on the volume icon at the top of your menu bar.
    What do you see?

  • Keeps rebooting -- Sudden death

    Hi,
When waking up this morning I found my Z3 Dual sim to be countinously rebooting. After a this keeping for a long time, I managed the tips of managing to shut it of.
I found the fix and held down power + down and up volume. It vibrated a 3 times but nothing happening. Did it again a few times and nothing happend. Tried it again a few times and now it has gone to sudden death mode..
Black screen, nothing is happening. All attempts on trying to do a hard reset is failing.
Stopped by my local Sony store, but I only had 20 minutes, thus never got any service.
    Any ideas?

I've replied to the question you posted in my thread about sudden death.

  • Sudden death on Intel iMac 2.8 GHz

I bought a new off-the-shelf iMac 2.8 GHz three days ago. Since then, the machine has suddenly died three times. No kernel panic, no gray shades coming down, no other warning--the screen just instantly goes black. After the first incident, it started up right away. Second time, it would not start at all. I pressed to power button a couple of times and at one point the machine growled (was this the fan going into overdrive?). Finally, I pressed and held the button til I heard a long beep. It started again. But I have also had another sudden death since then. Has anyone else experienced this sudden death? Because it did not invovle a kernel panic, does this rule out bad ram issues? Thanks.

It may be that the fans are not cooling the machine correctly. Resetting the system management controller can solve this problem. Read the following support article for instructions on how to do this.

PowerBook G4 - Won't Start Up - 3 Strange Beeps then just LED flashes and sudden death - black screen.
Prior that the powerbook also couldn't start but I could see the Apple logo, so via fire-wire (holding T at start up) I backed up the hard disk.
Check via DiskToolPro the structure, defragmented. Via DiskWarrior rebuild the directory
and finally not been able to access the drive I reformatted the drive via fire-wire drive.
Re-started the powerbook holding C to boot up from DVD - nothing
Re-started again and it give me one long beep and black screen. An indication that my 1gig RAM is bad or gone (?) and the DVD is stuck inside.
Bought new one 1 gig, installed it and now I'm getting only three beeps.
I tried all, changed the slots several times and nothing.
    I tried more as:
c -- to boot from CD (again while the DVD is still inside and I cannot get it out)
cmd-opt-p-r -- to Zap the PRAM,
cmd-opt-n-v -- to clear NV RAM,
cmd-opt-o-f -- to boot into open firmware … and nothing. The DVD is in and I have
black screen with three beeps and flashing LED.
Do I have to replace the Logic Board?   (Anyone has a spare one ?)
But it is the faulty Logic board?
Could anyone help me out? Please.
I'm retired and I cannot afford a new laptop - and this powerbook was a great, great horse for me until that horrible set of three beeps.
Thank you in advance for any advice and help.

But it is the faulty Logic board?
There was a known issue with LBs in 15-inch PowerBooks with 1.5 and 1.67Ghz processors in which one RAM slot would fail. There once was a repair extension program that fixed the problem at no cost, but it is long-expired.
The problem with seeking a used logic board for these models is that so many had their boards replaced that it increases the chances of the boards in the used/pulled markets having the same problem you have now. The replacement program also came close to exhausting the supply of new boards,
If it turns out to be a bad LB and you can't find a replacement, consider how used computer pricing works: A used computer is worth hugely more in parts than if bought as a working unit. I.E, you can probably find a working PowerBook that will cost less than the logic bard alone. It also possible to find a used MacBook Pro for less that a replacement LB.
If you tell us your approximate geographic location, we can see what's available nearby. I'm also retired, and and visiting my wife's family this week so have even more time than usual to help you search.

  • Sudden Death due to corrupt SD card/ virus?

Bought an Xperia Z3 Compact less than a month back and was extremely happy using it. However, within the first 3 weeks, it suddenly died on me while browsing. Took it to the local Sony service center who said they'll check for hardware faults, if any. 2 days later, they returned it back to me with nothing more than OS software update.  Within the next 24 hours, the phone died once again and this time I tried every trick I read online. Volume up+Power button. Long pressing the yellow hard reset button. Nothing worked. Feeling frustrated, I confronted the service centre reps telling them its not a software related issue. As it was bound to happen, the phone restarted normally at the store. Now it didn't look like there was any problem with the phone.  The explanation provided by the service centre was that there's no issue with the phone. Instead, I might be having a corrupted SD card that may possibly be infected with a virus. Went back home and checked with AVG anti-virus (paid version) and didn't find any signs of infection. The only remaining possibility is that my office laptop might have some virus since I often use it to charge my cellphone.  My questions to experts - Is this possible? Does an SD card or virus have anything to do with the sudden death problem? How do I fix it because even the service centre refuses to acknowledge any problem? What's the point of such a good phone if I can't rely on it to work all the time?

  • X220 battery sudden death

Hi, my quite new x220 with 9-cell  battery  was working perfectly fine last week and the battery life was excellent with the battery condition at somewhere around 90%.
The laptop was left to hibernate for bit less than a week and when I tried turning it back on it had no life, finally I connected the power supply and the laptop started but the power manager showed that the battery has failed due to normal wear.
This seems really strange considering the battery was perfectly fine the last time I used it and the cycle count is just 10. As the laptop is used the battery is allready out of warranty and I really would not like to buy new battery when the other one was basically unused.
So is there anything I could do or do I have to buy a new one?

This is almost known issue. Lenovo consider different battery manufacturers as "similar" battery component but the quality differs significantly. The best are Panasonic ones, the worst Sanyo. Unfortunately there is no way to get battery made by exact manufacturer.
You have to buy a new one, Lenovo does not care about well-known failing components. I am sure you can find more related reports about Sanyo batteries (made for Lenovo) https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/9-Cell-Battery-just-DIED-not-by-normal-wea...
You might try to complain about poor battery quality in General Discussion forum http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/General-Discussion/bd-p/Special_Interest_General
I was also "lucky" to get the Sanyo one in my X220 so I'm waiting for its sudden death as well. There is nothing I can do about that.

  • SUDDENLY SLEEPING Sudden death.

SUDDENLY SLEEPING. Like, I'd be typing along, with the powercord plugged in and a full battery charge, and the display goes blank and the whole machine sounds like it's going into hibernation. somtimes I have to take the main battery out and press the power key so there is no light coming from the pumping heart light in front of the PB. After that I plug the powercord back in and VOILA it starts up, with a warning that the clock is set to a date before 19 somthing and some apps will behave erraticly. the clock actually set it self to 1970. I have done all the resettings of Prams etc etc, I have even changed the logicboard, but still, ZZZzzzZZ sudden sleep/death. should I change the battery within the machin, could the two batterys within be FLAT/DEAD, is this the problem ?? HELP, sudden sleep.

  • IBook randomly turns off *when plugged in,* how long can my iBook last me?

    O Sages of Mac Wisdom,
Help! I've been Googling and looking at forums all over the place for help. I have seen many posts about other iBooks shutting off randomly when they are on battery power, but have not seen any that answered questions about iBooks turning off when they are plugged in. It happened four times in the span of two and a half weeks and has stopped (no incidents for the past two weeks). I have reset my PRAM and PMU. Why would it be turning off on its own when it is plugged in?
Second question: my battery only lasts for about a 45 minutes from a 99% charge. Here's the information on it:
    Battery Information:
    Charge Information:
    Charge remaining (mAh): 1438
    Charging: Yes
    Full charge capacity (mAh): 1544
    Health Information:
    Cycle count: 95
    Battery Installed: Yes
    Amperage (mA): 934
    Voltage (mV): 12508
I bought a new battery from ifixit.com, rated at "good" condition, and it will last for an hour until it gets to 75%, then drops down to 0% in five minutes and the iBook goes to sleep. It could be just that they gave me a crappy one, but here's the information on it anyway:
    Battery Information:
    Charge Information:
    Charge remaining (mAh): 5236
    Charging: Yes
    Full charge capacity (mAh): 5804
    Health Information:
    Cycle count: 91
    Battery Installed: Yes
    Amperage (mA): 962
    Voltage (mV): 12511
    Thoughts?
Final question: I have some extra money now, and I won't after July, when I'm done with my MA and have to break down and find an actual job (also won't have the Ed Discount after July). I want to get the most out of this iBook, but I also don't want to be screwed in a year or two and not be able to afford a new computer. In other words, do you have any estimate on how much more mileage I can get out of this one? Any past experiences anyone has had would be helpful!

Hey steck and Welcome to Apple Discussions,
Why would it be turning off on its own when it is plugged in?
Have you been on the machine when this happens? Are there any unusual symptoms when this happens?
    Next:
Download Temp Monitor here and run it:
    http://www.bresink.de/osx/TemperatureMonitor.html
    report back
There could also be a DC in board problem or a PMU problem.
    Battery problem:
    Charge Information:
    Charge remaining (mAh): 1438
    Charging: Yes
    Full charge capacity (mAh): 1544
That's about a third of what it should be.
    The ifixit battery:
    Charge remaining (mAh): 5236
    Charging: Yes
    Full charge capacity (mAh): 5804
That one should run it for 5 hours. It could be bad.
Did you calibrate it when you got it?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1490
In other words, do you have any estimate on how much more mileage I can get out of this one? Any past experiences anyone has had would be helpful!
Well with your current situation, there is a big question mark. However I use and continue to use a 14" 1.2 iBook and feel very confident in it. Mostly I know the problems that can occur and have repaired all of them myself. I also repair and donate them to inner city school teachers, since I can get good deals on broken ones (or they're donated).

  • IBook G3 shuts down when plugged in?

    Hi,
My G3 600mhz iBook G3 has startede shutting down as soon as i plug the power supply/charger in forcing a restart.
The only other thing (if it's related) is that the front case latch no longer works.
    Any thoughts?

    Hi,
Yes i tried that to, also no joy.
I'm stummped with this one, looks like some kind of power management issue cos the sleep light no longer glows either.

They require a replacement power supply which apple does not provide. But other people can.

  • Black screen: sudden death?

Suddenly, the phone stopped responding, screen is black. I've tried reset and restart, no response...that is, no light in the screen, no bar to swipe, no apple logo. nothing at all. at the same time, plugging in yields nothing, no response that indicates charging or connection to powere. I cannot restore because plugging in to laptop similarly does not have any response, so itunes doesn't "know" iphone is there.
Yes, I do want a new iphone, but would prefer to choose my time....Can you help? Please note that I've done the usual suggestions; I'd appreciate not being told to do what I've just said I've done....

Brad805's response to someone else's problem was the one I'd not seen before - and it worked. thanks, Brad!
Keep on computer USB or Wall Charger and Reset, hold both Home and Power buttons until the iPhone begins to restart. Usually takes less than 20 seconds of holding both buttons.

  • IBook screen dies suddenly

As i was working on my ibook in word, the screen went blank all of a sudden to a very faint dim look. I tried the screen brightness adjustment and that is normal. The computer is fine upon reboot but it is still really annoying to have it fail. Any ideas?

Well wish me luck, the capacitor has got to be it. I had known it was dying a couple years ago but didn't know it could possibly cause these problems but now after researching it think your right. Looks like I get to have all kinds of fun breaking into my ibook to replace it. Funny, i never really plan to crack open apple products and here I am with this laptop to fix and my iphone 4 that I get to disassemble because it flew off of the roof of my car @50mph and got run over. Shattered the glass on both sides but the phone itself works perfect, AMAZING. That phone is far more durable than I gave it credit for. Once the parts arrive I'll tear it down and replace the front assembly and upgrade the back cover to aluminum.
Anyway I ran on a tangent there but once I get the capacitors replaced I'll hop back on here and let you know how it turned out. Thank you very much, there may still be some life left in that little iBook!
