  • IBook G4 - 14 Inch Battery Bay

    Hello,
I got a new hard drive put in my iBook, and whoever was fiddling around with it somehow made it so my battery sits very loosely in the bay.
Does anyone perhaps know how to make it sit firmly again?
    Thanks!

i'm going to answer your wuestion with one of mine, that's related:
with your new hard drive, do you get worse battery life? i got my 30 GB replaced with an 80 GB and now I have significantly less battery life... dis this happen to you? (assuming you got a bigger HD)

  • Dead iBook G3 - 14 inch

Took my working iBook G3 - 14 inch down to the coffee shop. It died in my backpack. The green light on the charger port is green. No click. No sound. Nothing.
I know it is not practical to repair the mother board. Might it be the DC-in board?
    Any comments? Other suggestions?

Maybe you just need a new battery?

  • Ibook G4 12 inch Crashing

I have a iBook G4 12 inch and it just started crashing. i reinstalled the 10.4.2 several times, i check the HDD and it passes. Could it be the memory? if so is it soldered to the MB? i check the usual spot under the keyboard and it empty.
It even crashed when set to target disk mode. this is why i am asking about the memory
    thx

When i boot from th System CD it ran just fine. When i attached it to another iBook and tried boot via target disc mode, it crashed again. if my understanding is correct, in target disc mode, the only thing you're using local is the Hardware(Motherboard, Ram,Processor). I tried running the Apple Hardware Test (extended test) and everything passed.

  • Anyone have a spare microphone cable for ibook G3 12 inch

Anyone have a spare microphone cable for ibook G3 12 inch? I pulled the wire from the connector when replacing my logic board.

Don't have a spare one lying around, but We Love Macs has a new one for sale:

    hello apple
can i find macbook air 11 inch battery life 7 hours ?

Well, the battery life for an 11 inch MacBook Air is 5 hours.  The 13 inch Air has a 7 hour life.
    Here's the specification:

  • Is iBook G4 (early 2004) battery hot-swappable during sleep

Is the battery of an iBook G4 (early 2004) hot-swappable while the computer is in sleep mode and the power adapter is not connected?

No. Download the iBook Manual from this page:
    http://www.apple.com/support/ibook/
On page 46 of the manual, it says to shut down the iBook before removing the battery.
The online instructions for iBook battery replacement can be found here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88121
Again, it tells you to shut down the iBook before removing the battery. This has not changed for the iBook G4.
Here is the list for part numbers for backup batteries:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86181
Note that all iBooks are listed as n/a (not applicable) when it comes to backup batteries. Since your iBook does not have a backup battery, the battery is not hot-swappable.

  • IBook sometimes boots on battery power

I recently inherited an 800MHz iBook G3 that has been acting strangely. Its internal hard drive was shot (it made loud clicking noises) but I got it to boot off an external firewire HD. The machine works great when plugged in to AC power, but acts very strangely when on battery power. It wouldn't boot on battery power, but if the iBook was running I could unplug the adapter and sometimes the iBook would run for a while and then shut off and other times it would immediately shut off (the battery was 100% charged).
I replaced the internal HD, hoping somehow it would solve my problem, but it didn't. I have done some more experimenting and it seems if I have had the iBook plugged in to AC power for a while (like overnight), the ibook will boot on battery power and run anywhere from 10 seconds to a minute before powering completely down. After that, the machine is completely dead and I have to plug it in to AC power to get it to boot again. Also, when it reboots, the time is messed up. I get an error message that says "Your computer's clock is set to a date before March 24th 2001. This may cause some applications to behave erratically. Please use the ..."
I have reset the PRAM and PMU repeatedly, I have tried other batteries (and while none of them were new they worked in other ibooks) with the same result. I also tried my battery in another ibook and it booted and ran that ibook just fine. Something in my ibook just shuts it down. I get some sort of system halt call in the log file.
I'm at a loss... anybody have any ideas as to what could be wrong or what I can do to fix it? Thanks for the help.

    Hey JW.
    Well like SU says:
"It sounds like there is a bad connection between the battery and the computer. "
So what I have seen on these is a bent locking tab on the battery lock. I had a few in here like that. I could lift the iBook 1" when it was running on battery and if I dropped that small bit it would shut down. Bending the locking tab back solved the problem. Careful it's fragile.
Also like Rhonda says it could be a logic board problem.
I've seen the super capacitors on the G3s go bad. Typically it's a .22 Farads @ 5.5 VDC. What happens is that the cap blows up (probably due to over filling like in the classic cases of cap failure in the past). It's easy to see since the outer case gets peeled back.
If you're date and time is constantly messed up I'd suspect that. I've replaced those caps with ones I bought from Electronics Goldmine.
Since that cap holds settings on the PMU it would also affect power if there were small transients that could cause you problems. The super cap system is designed to hold settings for around 30 seconds while you change batteries but if that cap is dead it wouldn't hold settings for a millisecond.

  • Identifying the right battery for my UK iBook G4 12 -inch

I'm trying to buy a replacement battery for the above ibook, but there seems so many. How do I know which one to buy? Looking on the Apple web site it only shows a 12.1" battery replacement.
I'm afraid I am unable to remember when I bought the model so I can't pin point the year. Is there anyway of finding out from the ibook itself?
My existing battery model number is A1061 10. 8V.
    Can anyone help?
    Many thanks in advance.

The 12" and "12.1" are used interchangeably. That 50W battery will work for your iBook.

  • IBook G3 300 mHz battery won't charge

I have an iBook G3 with a 300 mHz processor (aqua clam shell). I replaced the battery from a reputable supplier but is still does not charge the battery. I tried the usual upgrades to software, battery reset 2.0, reset PRAM, cleaned all contacts, and still no charging of the battery. I checked the voltage output of the 6-pins where the battery contacts meet and the computer output is 3.7V on the 1st 4, 0V on #5, and 1.4 V on #6. The battery has no voltage from most of the contact points and is 0.15V on two contact points. The LED around the charger cord stays green always, does not turn orange. When I R & R the battery, sometimes it will appear to be charging for about 10 min. then the battery gets X'd out. Any ideas before I dissect the machine? I have a new 60 Gig HD to install so I have to open it up anyway. I have a new DIMM installed and it works great (512 MB), its tremendously faster than it was in the past. Everything else on the computer works well so it would be a shame for the battery to not work.

Gene, Welcome to the discussion area!
Not sure why you posted here. You really should post your question in the "iBook (colors)" discussion area.

  • MacBook Pro Retina 15-inch battery life on Yosemite

Has anyone noticed impact on the battery after upgrading to Yosemite? I found only one article online that talks about the impact. I followed the instructions but still the battery life did not improve. I'm running MacBook Pro Retina Late 2013, 15-inch, 2.6GHz Core i-7, 16GB RAM.
I think that I should be getting more than 8h of life when fully charged.
Link to article on iMore.com: http://www.imore.com/how-resolve-battery-life-troubles-your-retina-macbook-pro

So here is an update: I've followed the article posted by OGELTHORPE (Thank you!). What I actually did is 1. Reset the SMC and 2. Reset the PRAM (MacBook Air SMC and PRAM reset).
What I've seen so far: Once I did the reset, I would guess that the system needed to re-calcualte again the battery charge. Initially after I disconnected from power, it started with a measurement from under 3:30h. After 45 minutes running on battery it is showing again 8:45h remaining  @ 93% charge. What I noticed is that every time I put the laptop to sleep this repeats - starting with some low time measurement and slowly climbing. I think that this could be a bug in the software and the battery charge calculation method is somehow not working properly. I wonder after those resets if the OS needs to get into a couple of battery charge cycles and the battery is calibrated again?
I don't recall having this issue with the last year's release of Mavericks.
I hope someone from Apple sees this and address this with the next OS X update.

  • Macbook pro (13-inch) battery life?

    Hello,
I've bought a Macbook Pro (13-inch, mid 2012, non-retina, OSX Yosemite 10.10, i7 processor) 3 weeks ago and I was wondering how long the battery usually lasts and what I can do to increase battery life.
Currently it only lasts up to 5 hours, despite it promising 9 hours of battery life. This is mostly while using Google Chrome and iTunes. It feels like I'm recharging it constantly and it already has been through 23 battery cycles - at this rate my battery would only last 3 years which would be shorter than my previous laptop did and I expect more from something that cost twice as much as my previous one.
So am I doing something wrong? Is there something broken or is max 5 hours of battery life normal?
With my previous laptop I also used to take out the battery and use only the adaptor to save my battery, but as I can't remove the battery of this laptop I was wondering if leaving the adaptor in while working at home so it remains at 100% would be a good idea or would that actually be worse?
    Many thanks in advance!
    Shari D
MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)

The battery life is stated as "up to" 9 hours, not promising 9 hours. Having said that, I would suggest using a browser other than Chrome, as it is often considered a battery hog. Also note, it is perfectly fine to use the computer with the AC power connected. As a rule of thumb, use it AC power when available, and on battery power when portability is required.

  • Cannot recall how to open iBook G3 14-Inch DVD tray

I just gave my ancient iBook to my neice.
She called and asked how to eject the DVD tray?
I could not recall. I thought it had a small oval button on the right side that ejected it?
    Thanks in advance for assistance.

If it's like the 12-inch model, the eject button is the F12 key, clear at the upper right of the keyboard. It's marked with the eject symbol.
You can also open the tray by holding down the trackpad button during startup.

  • Overheating for iBook G4 (14 inch)

hello. first time poster, and far from computer literate, so your help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
i am presently in Malta, where there is no apple service centers, and am worried after hearing about the battery recall / overheating problem this morning (cnn.com) - even though my model and serial number (of both iBook and battery) are not eligible... because my computer does get very very warm, and yesterday i could have sworn it smelled like it was burning.
    any advice?
also, since i have now removed the battery and am using the ac adapter, do i run the risk of losing information (old files, etc) if our power goes out suddenly - as it often does here?
THANK YOU from a small island in the mediterranean.

If your battery is not in the recall group (mine missed it by a few digits this time), I would not worry too much. However, if you really smell smoke, or see it, remove the battery.
Also, where is your iBook getting hot? On the left or right side? On the palm rest? If it's the palm rest on the left side, it's the hard drive causing the heat, because that's where it is. If it's the right side, it's the battery, because it's just under there. I have an iBook G4 12" model, and the right palm rest never gets hot. The left one, where the hard drive is located, does, and this is normal, unfortunately.
Please remember to mark this reply as helpful or solved if it has solved your problem or answered your question. Thanks!
