IBook G4 1GHz -- combo drive spitting out all CDs/DVDs since 10.4.5

My 12 inch iBook G4 1GHz has been spitting out any CD/DVD inserted (both blank as well as non-blank ones) for the last few hours.
Also, my system crashed at least 4 times today. And when I restart, it starts off with noisy fan sound and just stops without booting.
When I press the power button again, it makes the same sound that iBook makes when it is forcefully shutdown. Now, when I press the power button again, it boots normally.

  • Combo drive spits out disks! Ptoooey!

I too am having an issue with my drive. No CD or DVD will mount. It does not matter if it is a blank disk, music or data CD. I will put in a disk (many different brands/speeds tested) and the Mac thinks for a few seconds, then just spits it out. I have read through a bunch of the threads here dealing with the same or similar problems. I am starting to think that one of those updates I downloaded from Apple screwed something up. This was not happening before the last updates were released...
I did not see a fix for this in any of the threads.
Hey, Apple! There's obviously a problem with the eMac. How about fixing it?! >:(

I don't have any kids, and I don't stick anything in my superdrive except discs, but I have the exact same problem. Just got an American Gangster DVD from Netflix, and the macbook sounds like it's trying to read it 3 times, then ejects it. This happens with lots of different discs I get. I called Apple support, and they had me press a combination of keys, reboot, etc. That's a lot harder than playing the disc on my girlfriend's Windows laptop, which plays any disc I put into it -- even if it looks like someone placed it on concrete and then danced on top of it. Apple superdrive, you are junk. Why did I pay so much for this thing when a Windows laptop is $600?

  • Macbook pro dvd drive spits out fresh blank dvd

I have a macbook pro with Lion installed
I am trying to write a DVD, but everytime i put a blank DVD it spits it out after 15 seconds or so, doesn't even recognizes as a blank dvd.
This is the details of my dvd drive

A fine lense cloth (for cleaning eye glasses) wrapped around a flat piece of credit card shaped plastic gently inserted and brushed once to the left side seemed to capture plenty of dust from my late 2008 MacBook Pro's Superdrive. Now DVDs work again and stay in the drive.
Sometimes the simplest solutions are the best.

  • Disk drive spits out all disks!

My drive won't accept any kind of disk anymore, it just spits them out after a few seconds. This happened over night. Maybe some dirt got in through the slot or something? Is there anything I can do besides getting an external drive of some sort?

Have you tried resetting the pmu? It is kind of a catch all, resets the powerbook and hardware to default settings? Check out apple's support page http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449

  • Combo Drive not "sucking in" CDs/DVDs

Two nights ago I went over to a friend's house, and I brought along a movie on DVD that I had no case for, so I put it in the PB's drive. When I started to use the PB, the DVD wouldn't ejct. I restarted and forced it out; later I put another CD in, ejected it, and then tried another – this time the drive wouldn't take the CD. I restarted a good amount of times, hoping holding down the mouse button or holding the Eject key would "reset" the drive and make it usable. After having no better ideas, I turned the PowerBook upside down, put a CD to the drive, and it took it. It seems this is deffinately a hardware problem, and turning my PB upside down isn't convenient, nor pobably the best thing to be doing. The drive does work and read CDs though.
I bought PB in August 2005, so it's still under one year warrenty. I decided to post here and see if there is anything I hadn't found out to do, or if all that's left is to call Apple.

Well, after a little bit more of looking at it, the drive does suck in discs. The reason I think I have thought it's been broken is because now I have to push them in much farther than I've ever had to, 'til there is almost only a centimeter left of the CD sticking outside the PB. I think I'll still call Apple anyway, but is this better or worse news?

  • Combo drive won't read CDs or CD-Rs or CD-RWs

my combo drive used to read CDs, CD-Rs and CD-RWs.
now it can't read any media but DVDs.
    why is this so?
please help. i have tried all brands of the CD medias but still it won't work. the drive keeps on spitting out the CDs.
    thanks.

    Hi.
I had the same problem with a Combo drive in a PowerBook G4 12 inch model.
It ended up being repaired under warranty.
You could try several things to troubleshoot it:
    1. Zap PRAM
    2. Reinstall system software
    3. Check the drive using a utility application
    4. Check your System Prefs under CDs and DVDs.
If these or other techniques do not solve the problem, then it is most likely a hardware issue, and your drive will need fixing. The Combo Driive in my "Little AL" went bad after nearly 3 years of use, but just prior to warranty expiration.

  • My cd/dvd drive keeps rejecting all cd/dvd.

my cd/dvd drive keeps rejecting all cd/dvd.  it accepts it for about 5 seconds and then spits it out.  does anyone have any suggestions?

Silly question, have you tried a lens cleaner?

  • My harddrive is full due to 17k of pic in my iphoto. I am trying to copy them onto a dvd and then will delete most of them, but when I try to burn a  group of events it won't work. ,y Mac just spits out the blank DVD.

My harddrive is full due to 17k of pic in my iphoto.
I am trying to copy them onto DVDS then free up the space on my HD by deleting them.
When I try to burn a few events at a time, but my Mac just spits out the blank DVD-R.

How much space do you have left because maybe the system is unable to cue the burn because is needs to write some data to the hard drive before burning the DVD-R.  Download OmniDiskSweeper, this program will give you information on your files and folders and give the opportunity to delete some files.  If you have a external hard drive you can just copy your files to the hard drive then delete off you main hard drive.

  • Wife's iBook G4, original combo drive, now getting the 70012 code

Hi, first time ever posting on Apple discussions.
Long story short, kids dropped my wife's iBook G4 the other week, I just replaced the entire monitor, no problems (thanks to instructions at iFixit!). Its a iBook G4, 12 inch, 1GHZ. Anyway, a few days afterwards I decided to see if the CD / DVD combo drive worked..... and it didnt. DVD player is not working and am getting the infamous 70012 error code. This is the original internal combo drive that came with the iBook and never have had an issue before now. She doesnt use it much but. Wondering if I didnt something wrong during the monitor swap or if it was damaged during the dropping incident. Any help / advise would be greatly appreciated!!!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Can you see the drive in the System Profiler? (>About this Mac>More Info>Hardware. Check under both "ATA" and "Disc Burning".
If you don't see it at all, it may be that the cable was dislodged from the logic board when it was dropped or while it was apart. If this is the case, try reseating the cable.
    Good luck!

  • Combo drive flaking out

    Hi all,
I've had a look at other people's issues with ths Combo drive and haven't seen anything that matches my problem exactly.
If I insert a DVD or CD, the disc mounts properly. I can also play audio CDs through iTunes with some success. However, if I try to rip a CD. The drive spins up, gets towards the end of importing the first track, spins down and that's it - the whole system is locked down whilst it shuffles with the disc in the drive. I have to hard-reset the machine (is there an emergency eject?), then the drive shuffles and squeaks while starting up and ejects the disc.
The same problem affects other operations that require heavy disc spinning like DVD playing and (non-commercial) ripping.
It's been something of a decline rather than a sudden occurence.
Does this behaviour ring any bells?
I've ordered a 10-brush DVD lens cleaner but I'm stumped if that doesn't work.
I tell you - this is typical - my Mac Mini is *one week* out of warranty! Let's hope it's just dirty - it's a year old.
    Any advice greatly appreciated!
    Mac Mini 1.42   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I would approach applecare or Apple store. You might find out that your machine was registered with apple later. I had a screen problem with a iBook, one week after the warranty has expired. I found out at the Genius Bar that the machine was registered a month later, after I bought the machien. So at the end it was stil under warranty.

  • Drive spitting out CD's seconds after insertion

My drive will not accept any form of CD. I haven't spilled liquid on it or anything. What's wrong? How can I fix this?

Scott, I have learned repeatedly what you have explained here: That these optical Super Drives are not robust. I am on my THIRD Super Drive in the less than three years I've owned my MacBook. Thank goodness I bought the extended warranty and got the drive replaced twice without charge. I forgot the circumstances of the first failure in Spring 2009, but the second failure was only last week after I tried to use Disc Utility to erase a CD-RW. I choose the longer, more thorough erase process, but when it was taking more than two hours, I stopped the procedure before it completed itself. After that, the drive would work only intermittently, spitting out most CD-ROMS and burning CDs only occasionally. I finally just went to the Genius Bar for a new one. (These guys are so busy these days that it took 3 days to install one they had in stock!)

  • Combo drive failure: Ejects all discs

While watching a very scratched DVD, the combo drive on my month-old Mac Mini began making very loud noises; after that the film skipped and froze. After a few minutes of disturbingly loud knocking and clicking noises, I turned the computer off by pressing the power button. After restart, I ejected the disc by moving it to the trash icon in the dock. Now the combo drive refuses to read any other disc that I put in: DVD, music, or data. It makes spinning sounds and then ejects them after about 10 seconds.
Everything else is still working fine. Is the combo drive dead or is there a fix I can attempt at home?
Thanks in advance for your help.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
It is possible that the drive has been damaged, in which case if it can't read the correct track of an inserted disk, it will automatically eject it. The fact the drive pulls the disk in and spins it up at all suggests the drive is otherwise functional, thus tending to indicate the lens is at fault.
You might first try a PMU/SMC reset (depending on whether yours is a PPC or Intel mini. This would be the first step if you were getting errors re failure to calibrate power when trying to write to a blank, and I would not have much confidence of it working in this situation since it seems unlikely to be a controller issue, but it's worth trying. Instructions are below - PMU if it's a PPC and SMC if it's an Intel.
If that doesn't help, try a lens cleaner. That has been known to help in these situations.
Ultimately, if the system is no longer under warranty, you would be better I think to get an external firewire drive than replace the internal. It would be much the same price and tend to give better performance!
