IBook G4 800mhz processor update?

I own a iBook G4 800mhz processor with 640mb ram. On another website I read "If you had an iBook G4 800, you can easily swap out the 800mhz board for a 1ghz"
1. Is this true and where does one obtain a 1ghz processor for my type of iBook?
2. Will this be cost effective? In other words, will it increase computer performance significantly?
3. Is the installation of a 1ghz a self installation or should it be done by a professional, if at all?

That is not really true. You cannot just swap out the CPU like you could in the g3 powerbooks or like it desktops. The 800 hmz and 1 ghz model use the same style logic board, so you could swap the 2 motherboards. But it would not be worth it.

  • IBook G4 800MHz, Hard Drive dissapears

    Hello,
I've been searching on these discussions boards for a while now but can't find any clues to what's going on.
I just got my hands on an iBook G4 800Mhz who's owner explained how the Hard Drive just "died" one day and when he took it in to be looked it, they said the Hard Drive needed to be repaired.
It sounded like a simple task for me, so I switched the Hard Drive out with an apple 30GB HD I had laying around from a previous 1Gb iBook G4 I had laying around.
OSX installed properly but midway through the second update to 10.4.9 (after 1 restart) it stopped, froze and wouldn't do anything for 25 minutes.
So I powered it down and restarted the computer.
It had that Folder with the Question Mark on it flashing, so I restarted again, same thing.
I popped in my OSX 10.4.6 cd and booted off to check out the HD, at first it showed the HD as a grey disk icon with a "disc0s3" so i tried to install osx again doing a clean install (erase drive then install)
halfway through the installation it froze, I restarted and the hard drive was now gone. Everytime I went to Disk Utility it only showed the OSX CD I booted off.
After several restarts and half a pizza pie later, the hard drive was showing up again, so I am now again reinstalling OSX and doing it's updates.
Could this be a Logic Board problem? Or something far worst than a new Hard Drive?
The hard drive I'm using in it now is about 2-3 years old which I got in my G4 iBook 1GHz (which now lays in pieces on the floor, it's been broken for a long time now but I jsut can't bare to throw it out)
Should I spend the $$$ and buy a brand NEW Hard Drive?
Any opinions or hints would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

    24" iMac 2.16GHz 256mb Vid   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Ok, here's some new information on what's going on.
After I saw that error earlier, I googled it up and zapped the pram which didn't do anything. I kept getting kernel panics as soon as it booted up on the grey screen with the grey apple.
I let the computer cool off for an hour and reinstalled osx, did the updates and sat in front of it waiting for it to crap out again; which happened about45 minutes later. The screen turned blue, I thought it was going to "sleep" mode but it just turned blue then dimmed.
Finally it was frozen and i forced it off and booted off the osx cd, and sure enough the HD Header was damaged. I repaired the disc with disk utility and rebooted straight into OSX.
This all leads me to believe it's a problem with the HD part on the MoBo itself which means I'll have to replace the whole thing

  • IBook G3 800mhz powers & starts up, after a shutdown it won't power up

One day my iBook G3 800mhz was working fine. I shut it down and later went to turn it on and it wouldn't do anything... no startup chime, no fans, no lights, nothing. I tried resetting PRAM, PMU, and many other things which didn't work at all.
I had a local computer store check it out and they told me the Motherboard was fried. I pretty much wrote the iBook off as DEAD. I took the battery out and it sat that way for about a month.
Today, I put the battery back in and hit the power button, and IT POWERED UP & BOOTED! I couldn't believe it. I shut it down and hit the power button again... nothing, it was "dead" again. I took the battery out and let it sit that way for about 2 hours, put the battery back in, pushed the power button and it BOOTED JUST FINE. So, I shut it down, pushed the power button and it was "dead." I took the battery out again, let it sit for an hour. This time instead of installing the battery I just connected the power adapter, pressed the power button and it BOOTED. To determine if it was the battery, I left the power adapter plugged in, shut down the iBook and pressed the power button... NOTHING, "dead" again. So, it's not the battery, it's not the power cord.
When I do get it booted, I am able to do a succesful Restart by selecting it in the Finder. Also, whenever it does power up, I am able to reset the PRAM and it will start up. Whenever I do a Shutdown (either from the Finder or by pressing the power button) it won't power up unless I disconnect the battery and power adapter and let it sit for about an hour.
I've been through all the forums and many websites and have yet to find a fix for this problem.
    Anyone have any ideas?

    Hey Shim..,
Certified Apple Technician and he agreed that it is probably the transistor (what he called it) that is failing, since it's not holding Date & Time
OK but a transistor is a long way from a microprocessor. Uhh where did he get his...oh never mind.
I have read in some forums about the leaking super cap,
I'd be interested in those leads
but I haven't been able to find any photos or anything that shows where on the board this is located.
    Just put one up here, it's from a 12" G4 1.2 GHz:
    http://www.photolava.com/view/d5pr.html
They're pretty distinctive, so hard to miss.
Here's the blowed up one from the 500MHz 12" G3
    http://www.photolava.com/view/d5pu.html
    Now that's blowed up
Is this cap replaceable? Anyone know of any step-by-step guide that would show how to go about this, or know of any company that might do this sort of thing? If it's not too terribly expensive, I'd be willing to give it a try.
Well let's determine if it's bad first. Usually when these things fail it's pretty obvious.
I'd try blowing out all the chips we talked about first since I believe a tiny bit of smutz will cause a CMOS micro to crash.
It reminds me of when these early PMUs will crash and drag the battery down with it in a matter of days vs years.
One of the resets in those was to remove all power and let it sit just like you're doing here. This was called resetting the logic board and was SOP for a no startup situation.

  • External monitor for 12" iBook G4 800MHz

My iBook G4 800MHz has recently been promoted to being my main desktop computer. I am in the market for an external monitor that will work well with it. Does anyone who has direct experience with attaching external monitors to the iBook G4 have any advice?
So far, I have learned that it will not support any more than 1024x768. However, most of the monitors I've seen are listed at higher than that. Will these monitors work with it, albeit at the lower resolution? This ViewSonic, in particular, has caught my eye. I use a ViewSonic at work (with a Windows PC) and I'm very happy with it so I was leaning in that direction.
I also understand about the video mirroring issue, and have discovered that I could use ScreenSpanningDoctor to overcome it. But unless I get a monitor that works, I'm being premature to worry about that at this point.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
      Mac OS X (10.3.9)

LCD screens have a "native" resolution. This is the resolution they're designed to run at. While you can usually lower the resolution of an LCD screen from its native resolution, the results will not be very good. You can see this if you change the resolution of your iBook's LCD screen to 800 x 600 for a little while. The display in your link has a native resolution of 1280 x 1024. So, it may be capable of stepping down to 1024 x 768, but the result may be a fuzzy image. Without the Screen Spanning Doctor, this display might not be a very good choice.
CRT screens are much more capable of changing resolutions. A 17" CRT screen might be a better choice whether you decide to use the SSD or not.
Someone else may have to comment on that screen's performance, though.

  • Can I fit an 800mhz processor in a 400mhz G4 tower?

Hi, I've got a 400mhz G4 tower (10Gb HD) and I've got an 800mhz processor from a Quicksilver tower left over after the latter was upgraded with a Sonnet 1.8 dual processor. Can I upgrade the 400 with the redundant processor?
    Cheers for any tips/advice.
    Kev.

    Hi
Unfortunately you can't, at least not easily...
Firstly in the earlier G4s the processor socket is in a different location on the logic board. Consequently the larger Quicksilver CPU daughter card will interfere with the optical drive ATA connector on the logic board.
Secondly because the Quicksilvers have a 133MHz system bus, the bus multipler on the CPU card will be set to 6 (6 * 133.33MHz = 800MHz). When installed in an earlier G4 with a 100MHz system bus, this will cause the processsor to run at 600MHz. you could increase the bus multiplier to 8, but this involves adding and/or removing small resistors on the CPU card.
Thirdly the Quicksilver CPU cards require a 12 volt feed to the fourth mounting screw. This isn't too difficult in itself though as it can be taken from a spare hard drive molex power connector.

  • Receiving Transaction Processor updates in rcv_transactions_interface

    Hi,
We use an legacy inventory system to receive lots. Once received a custom program puts the records into rcv_transactions_interface table for interfacing and calls the Receiving Transaction Processor. Now, the Receiving Transaction Processor updates the rcv_transactions_interface with error. The error in po_interface_errors table is
The item id (NUMBER = **********) does not match the item_id in the Purchase Order.
But the item in present in the Purchase order which I have mentioned. Please help me in finding out the resolution for this issue.
    Thanks

Can you do this and let us know the results?
    1. Change the Proflle value for RCV: Processing Mode to Batch
    2. Change the profile value for RCV: Debug Mode to Yes
    3. Perform transaction
    4. Run Receiving Transaction Processor
    5. Check the log file at the bottom.
    6. If you can send the log file,. we can assist.
Also as a clue this error looks like is coming back from Inventory. Please check whether the item controls are correctly setup and item attributes are enabled correctly. Your code combinations are all still enabled that are used in the po distributions and so on.

  • IBook G3 (800Mhz, 32 VRAM) won't boot... at all.

I got an old iBook G3 (800Mhz, 32 VRAM) from a friend, which he hadn't used for years (literally). It didn't even have a HDD, so I bought a new one and placedit in.
I connected the power adapter, and booted normally. Everything fine, it booted, and gave me this blinking question mark. I inserted the Tiger install DVD, and it started installing. Half way through, it gave me a disc read error (the disc was dirty and therefore unreadable. No problem related to the computer). I also got a message saying that I needed to restart. For some reason I figured that holding the power button for a few seconds would force it to shut down, which it did.
But after that it wouldn't boot anymore. I press the power button and NOTHING happens. No beep, no noise, not the slightest sign of life,... nothing.
I tried to reset the PMU, and nothing either.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1431?viewlocale=en_US#faq6
(Although, it says the "power button on the keyboard". If they mean the actual keyboard, then I probably did this wrong, as I'm not aware of a power button on the keyboard).
    I did also read this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA25686?viewlocale=en_US
But it wasn't of any useful help either. Still the same problem.
Another thing I noticed is that there's a flashing light on the battery, but I assume it just means the battery is not charged? (It wouldn't boot or do anything if I removed the battery either, by the way).
Now I ran out of ideas. Any help?
    Thanks a lot!

Try removing the battery entirely and see if it will boot.
It could be a bad power input (DC-in) board. Sometimes when the DC-board quits working, the iBook will only start up from a working and charged battery. In this case, the adapter doesn't work. It won't charge the battery, nor will it power the iBook.
This happened to my husband's iBook, and we swapped batteries periodically, allowing my iBook to charge both batteries, until he could get the DC-in board replaced.

  • Can't open Preview/Calendar/App store/iBooks/Terminal/Mail after updated to Mavericks

After I updated to Mavericks, I can not open Preview, Dictionary, App Store, iBooks, Keynotes, Photobooth, Quicktime, Contact, Calender, etc...
Mail keeps crashing everything I opened it.
iTunes and Safari is still working. Can someone tell me what's happening and how to solve my problem? Thanks a lot!
BTW, I remeber this symptom happened after I used Cleanmymac.

Evi, I have the same problem. When I first updated to Mavericks, everything is OK, but I use Cleanmymac too, It is may be because of Cleanmymac, it cleaned about 1G files.
Now I can not open App Store, how can I download and reinstall Mavericks?

  • PDF won't open in iBooks after latest software update

I have a large pdf file (biology textbook) that I would read on my iPad. It worked flawlessly until the latest software update (4.3.1). Now I can only see the first page and it only shows page 1 of 1, even though it is taking up all 450MB of space. I can't see any other pages and they aren't even shown at the bottom of the screen in iBooks. I tried deleting the file from iTunes and resyncing it. I also tried a full restore of my entire iPad and that didn't work. It was working fine before the software update so I don't know what to do. Thanks

I just updated to the latest update 4.3.2 and it works fine! Apparently something in the 4.3.1 update caused it to not work.

  • IBooks Author and Software Update Service

iBooks Author is not included in the Software Update Service list of available downloads. Does anyone know how to add as an available update within OS X Server?
It doesn't seem like the update service has iBooks Author in it's update catalog.

    Hi
You enter the server's hostname or fully qualified domain name as defined in whatever you're using for providing DNS Resolution for your network. If you want to know the Server's hostname launch Terminal on the Server itself and issue "hostname" without the quotes. If we use server.theschool.sch.uk as an example the url would look like this:
    http://server.theschool.sch.uk:8088/index-leopard-snowleopard.merged-1.sucatalog
    Does this help?
The servername.local refers to the Server's Bonjour name. Bonjour names don't resolve to IP addresses.

The only people who can read your book in .ibooks format are people with an iPad, and an iPad cannot read a dvd.  So you should probably export it as .pdf.
