IBOOK G4 #A1080 Screen (No Video, Black)

Most recently my son turned on his  ibook  and his screen was black, the computer is running but he can't see anything on the screen. Specifications are as
follows:  serial # LW550647QRYC Model # A1080. Does Apple still warrant, have the website to validate,  this known screen problem with the Ibooks?

Hi, Richard. Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
The newest iBook is seven years old at this point. Apple quit support for them long ago (except for the forum here in Apple Support Communities).
Have you tried resetting the PMU?

The PMU (Power Management Unit) has control over the backlight function, so resetting it sometimes helps in this situation.

  • Full screen keeps video size the same, fills the rest with black border

I am having an issue when trying to watch olympics on the BBC website. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/2012/live-video
When I click any video (live or archived), it gives options with three players to watch it in. According to the FAQ page on the site, the only way to get a true full screen experience (no letter boxing), is to use the "pop-out" player, then click full screen. When I do this, the picture size remains the same and goes to the upper left corner, with the rest of the screen filled with black (see attached photo). I have tried EVERYTHING. And by everything I have tried:
Chrome, Firefox, IE, all with the most recent update and most recent flash player
Tried reverting to a previous version of flash player
    Tried disabiling hardware accelaration
    Tried changing the screen resolution
Tried using an external HDMI display
Tried starting with a "clean" test windows user
Tried updating my video card driver
I have no idea what else to do, with the end goal of being able to stream the olympics for the next two weeks on my HDTV through HDMI. Please assist. thank you in advance

    Hi Willy:
I just tried the link and got the same "can't show this" message as Pat,  but WAS able to call up the player by clicking on the yellow button near the bottom, marked "Watch the Film."
I tried viewing it full screen by simply double-clicking in the center of the video and it displayed  full screen mode on my PC.  I'd guess that the video comes from the same source  as the streaming version.  I tried some of the other videos on the site and they all displayed full screen correctly.  I couldn't locate the "archived" videos you mentioned, though, to check them.
Have you tried simply double-clicking the video to make it full screen?

  • Dv2000 Laptop Screen go's black .. Video Card?

    Hi
I have a HP Pavilion DV2000 laptop with Vista, and the screen stays black when it goe's into sleep mode. I got it to work when I powered off the laptop and hooked an external monitor to it, then powered it back on.. It worked for awhile until I shut the lid, and it went back into sleep mode.
Now, even when I hook an external monitor to it, the screen is still black.
After reading bookoos of threads, forums, websites and trying tricks, resetting battery, holding pwr button..etc I can only find solutions that tell me that its the integrated video card, and that the motherboard needs to be replaced. BestBuy also gave this advice.
Is there any alternative route here than spending $200+ dollars on a motherboard... and even if I did purchase another motherboard, How would I know that Motherboard is not defective also?
Any advice is welcomed.. I'm at wits end on this!

If the reflow wont fix it, yes you can sell it as parts or just store it somewhere as a "treasure" from Nvidia and HP

  • Boot to black screen (no video)

Once in perhaps one hundred boots (1 in 100) or so of my G4, the machine appears to be starting normally (you hear all the usual sounds) but the video never comes to life, meaning the screen just stays black forever... So I can't say whether or not it is really booting because I have no visual feedback. When such happens I seem to have no choice but to hold down the power key until it stops. I then restart again and it always comes up the second time (at least it always has to this point). Then say maybe 100 boots later it will do it again!!! Anyone seen this behavior before and have any ideas of what it might be?? One in a hundred is no big deal but I am fearful that one day it will get stuck in this useless mode and I won't even have any ability to investigate the problem with no way to see what's going on... Any help would be appreciated.... bob...

Well, to start with I would check your cables to be sure they aren't loose. You might wiggle them as well when the monitor is on to be sure there isn't a bad electrical connection in the cable connectors. Next, I'd check the monitor's power cord to be sure it's properly seated.
Beyond that there isn't much you can do. It would most likely be a hardware problem of some type. If it is software related it would be something corrupted in the OS X installation. You could erase the hard drive and reinstall OS X. You could move the monitor to a different computer and observe over time if the problem persists on a different machine. At least that would suggest it's a problem with the monitor.

Can somebody advice me what to do... when I want to play video on iPad, the screen is just black....it was just fine this morning. In iTunes it shows the movies are there.

Try starting the movie using a backdoor approach.
Swipe down from the middle of any home screen in order to bring up the Spotlight Search Feature. Type in the name of the movie in the text field. When the movie appears in the search, tap on it and that should launch the videos app and hopefully the movie will being to play.

  • Samsung Videos black in Quicktime X

    Hello,
i have some Videos from a old samsung u-ca4. Quicktime is able to open these, but only plays sound and no video (black screen).
I think the codec is missing, but I don't know where to get it.
My old iBook was able to play these after some codec downloads, but I don't remember which ones these have been, and the iBook was reinstalled by myself, so all codecs are lost.
Samsung told me to instal a Xvid codec but i have one and if I install the mentioned I need to Install DivX 7, and I don't want it. And even with this it doesn't work.
My old iBook never had Dvix installed, and my new MBP has some Videos with Dvix codecs and it is able to play them without problems.
    Can someone help me? thx.

I'm puzzled, then, and wonder why QuickTime Player X seems to be morphing down the same path as iMovie?
I naturally expect a newer version of QuickTime Player to contain a superset of codecs and functions of the old version. I'm now worried how long Apple will support the apparently superior editing/playback functionality of QuickTime 7.
Is there any possible chance that this "bug" was an oversight on Apple's part and that future versions of QuickTime Player X will include at least the same depth of codecs as QuickTime Player Pro 7?

  • Whenever I try to use my macbook, it will work for about 10 min. then the screen will go black, the computer will not respond to my commands, and I have to restart it. Can anyone tell me what's going on, and how to fix it? Thank you!!!

Hello everyone, like most people on this site, I am having difficulties understanding and fixing my Macbook Pro. About a month ago my computer screen went black, the computer was unresponsive, and it started making a beeping noise. I restarted the computer, and it seemed to have fixed itself. 6 days ago, I put my laptop into it's case with some papers, went home (about 30 min. after putting laptop into case), and opened my bag. My computer's fans were on, the computer was really hot, and when I opened the computer, the screen was black and unresponsive. I turned it off, let it cool down, turned it back on, started to stream a video on Hulu, and about ten minutes after, the screen went black again and the computer was unresponsive. Now everytime I turn it on after about ten to fifteen minutes the screen will go black, the computer will become unresponsive, and I have to shut it off. The weird thing though is that everytime I restart my computer, when I reopen my account, my computer acts as if nothing has happened, and everything I had opened or unsaved is still there without autosave saving the documents. The screen also goes black and the computer becomes unresposive when I move the computer around. I get a lot of pop-up ads and other crap on my computer when I am on the internet. I don't know if one of those pop-up websites might have given me a virus or may be the cause of this problem. I don't now what is wrong with my computer or how to fix it, but if anyone has any advice, I WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE IT!!!!!!! Thank you very much!!!
-- Sincerely, A very confused, scared, and hopless Macbok Owner

To get rid of "pop-up ads and other crap on my computer when I am on the internet", click on Safari in the Menu bar, and select Preferences. Next select Extensions. Delete all of them. Restart Safari.
The first step in addressing the black screen is an SMC reset.
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

I would like to use slideshow in lightroom to export my video as a full screen 1920x1080 video with text overlays.  I am using text overlay in lightroom as it reads from the metadata that is easy for me to input in the library screen.  When i export from lightroom slideshow and choose the 1920x1080 resolution the end product is a very small video in the middle of a black background.  i have double checked and do not have any borders turned on.  Another option would be to export from the library but lr mogrify does not seem to put text overlays on video either.  Any input would be welcome.

I dont understand anything you said in your post.
Do you have a specific question about video production?
The forums are for individual technical or creative issues that users have with video production. I am sur someone will be able to help you, but and to get a response it is best to ask a specific question.
Is this about a technical problem you have or something about setting up a web site? If its the latter this is the wrong forum.

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings If yu can see the screen enough to do it)
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since you have a hardware problem.

  • My screen is going black and the phone acts as though it is on and everything is working but I can't get the screen to change from being black... Any thoughts?

I have had my Droid 2 for about a year and a half now. I had no problems with it until a few months ago when that update came out.  All the sudden the phone would freeze up then all of a sudden yesterday I was texting a friend and had the keyboard open then the screen went completely black.  I tried rebooting the phone...pulling the battery... and then doing a hard reset...  Nothing works. I cant even really do a hard reset because the screen is black.  Any thoughts?

  • How do I get rid of random screen flicker and black screen when using a late 2013 Mac Pro with a 4k Samsung 55" Display?

I have a new Mac Pro late 2013 and a 55" 4k Samsung display connected using an HDMI cable. For the most part the display is amazing, however, I get occasional screen flicker and black outs. Can anyone help? Could I possibly have a bad video card?

4K displays take more than half the bandwidth of a ThunderBolt Bus. So you may get better results if you are careful to place them on their own Bus. This article has the explanation of which port is using which Bus:

  • Lenovo z50 screen keeps going black

I've had it for around 6 months with no problems, then in the last 48 hours, the screen keeps going black when I'm using it. It happens every 20-30 minutes. If I close the laptop lid and open it again, it works fine until the problem comes up again. I've tried downloading updates and placing a fan by it, but it keeps happening. Any ideas?

  • Screen goes to black when tilted back too far...anyone else had this issue?

My ibook has started this crazy new thing. The screen goes to black when tilted close to all the way back. It's not that big a deal, but I was wondering if anyone else has this issue and if it possibly will get worse. When it happens, I just close the lid, let in go into sleep mode, then open it back up touch a key and all's well, I just have to be careful not to lean the screen back too far. In the past, I've had to send it back twice for the logic board to be replaced and as much as I love Macs, I really feel this is not a well-made product. Thanks for any advice....

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
As the old joke goes about the guy who went to the doctor and, raising his arm, said, "Doc, it hurts when I do this." And the doctor said, "Well, then, don't do that!"
Yes, it is a familiar thing to happen to an iBook. The backlight cable can get pinched in the hinge, causing it to go off at certain angles.
You can read more about it here:

  • My iphone 5 screen is black but touch works and i can screenshot but screen is still black after restore what should I do?

and i can screenshot but screen is still black after restore what should I do, could it be a loose cable in the phone under the metal shield?

    Hello Dopeslayer242,
Thank you for providing the details of the issue you are experiencing with your iPhone.  I would be concerned too if I only saw a black screen.
I recommend following steps 2-6 below for an issue like this:
If a single application is not responding or stops responding when it opens, you can force it to close.
If the device is unresponsive or if certain controls aren't working as expected, restart your device.
If the device remains unresponsive or does not turn on (or power on),reset your device.
If there is no video or if the screen remains black, verify that the device has enough charge to turn on:
If you are using an iPad, ensure that it's connected to the USB Power Adapter supplied with the device.
Let charge for at least twenty minutes, then see if it starts normally.
If there is no image on the screen, press the Sleep/Wake button to attempt to wake the device.
If the screen displays a red battery icon, continue charging the device until the battery is fully charged.
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, or the if the screen remains black or shows a persistent Apple logo, try restoring with iTunes:
Connect the device to your computer and open iTunes.
If the device appears in iTunes, select and click Restore on the Summary pane. Learn more about restoring iOS software.
If the device doesn't appear in iTunes, try to force the device into recovery mode, and then restore it.
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, contact Apple.
You can find the full article here:
iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3281
If you get to step 5, I recommend backing up your iPhone before performing the restore:
