IBook G4 almost starts

Help! Was working fine. Today tried to power on....chime OK, apple logo OK, spinning lines at bottom for 10-15 seconds and it shuts off. Any ideas?
Thanks.

if you get that far everytime, then the logic might still be ok, but it sounds like the hard drive has or is failing.
try booting from the install disc. from the menu bar select Utilities > Disk Utility. select the hard drive from the left hand icon list, click on the First Aid tab, & click the Verify Disk button. if it throws errors, then click the Repair Disk button. If it tells you the SMART status is failing or errors trying to repair failed, your drive is likely on it's last.

  • Ibook clamshell almost starting up

Recently, i was in the process of replacing my optical drive in my graphite clamshell. I did someting extreamly stupid, i forgot to take the battery out of the computer while i was working on it. When i was removing the optical drive the metal side of it toutched the board right below the DC in board. I immediately saw a small spark come from the board. I tested to see if the computer would start up. The computer's DC in board did light up when i pluged in the cable, and the light did turn orange to show that the battery was not fully charged. To my horror, as i pressed the power button, nothing at all happened. While looking for a solution i toutched the hard drive and found that it was extremly hot. Hoping that the only thing damaged was my HDD i ordered a new one. I installed the new HDD and put the computer back together. Once again i tried to power up the clamshell, and to my suprise i could hear the HDD spinning. The display did not light up. After about 3 seconds, the hard drive shut off. I continued to try to turn it on and had the same results each time. I really like this computer, it is the 466 Firewire graphite model with DVD, and i feel it is worth saving. I tried reseting the PMU, it didnt help. I am afraid it may be a logic board problem. If anyone has any ideas PLEASE PLEASE HELP!!

Unfortunately I think you jumped the gun with replacing the hard drive ...even with a bad drive you would still be able to get into open firmware and perform some other diagnostics.
Your mother board is most likely toast ...if you can find another (even the 366 w/firewire) on ebay for a reasonable price you may be able to get things going again.

  • IBook will not start up!

My iBook will not start up all the way. It gets to the gray apple screen and just spins.(3hrs) I tried everything. It will not start up with 10.3 CD or OS9. It will start up with nortons CD but you cant see the Hard Drive. Hardware test CD starts and every thing checks out fine. What to do. I hope its not its final day.

    Paul,
Do you have OS X 10.3 installed on it?
Try booting into Safe Mode. This will take quite awhile longer than a normal startup because it does a file check and repair of the hard disk.
If this works you will see your normal desktop. Once completely started up in Safe Mode, try to restart normally, and go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Click on the top hard drive icon in the left sidebar and note the S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom right of the pane. What does it say?
Select the named boot volume in the left sidebar, and repair permissions on it.
See if you are able to do a little hard drive maintenance to helps things out.
If it won't start up in Safe Mode, you can try Single User Mode and fsck, but if Safe Mode won't do it for you, fsck may not, either.
Keep Norton far, far away from any hard drive with OS X installed on it. DiskDoctor is known as DiskDoctor Kevorkian around here. It finds non-existent "errors" and sets about "correcting," them, killing your hard drive in the process.
If none of Apple's own disk repair procedures work (Safe Mode, Disk Utility from the Install disc, or fsck), it may be wise to invest in DiskWarrior. It can often find your hard drive and repair it when Apple's own utilities cannot. DiskWarrior has saved my hard drive more than once.
    Good luck.

If you are currently running iOS 5.01, you can update to iOS 5.1 over wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).

  • IBook will not start up past gray screen w/ apple logo

iBook will not start up past gray screen w/ apple logo. So I have zeroed out the hard drive and reinstalled tiger. No change except if I start up holding shift it will boot and welcome comes up then black screen that says you must restart by holding down power key.
Zeroed out the HD again with same results. Also I have a iBook G3 with the same symptoms.

What you are experiencing is a kernel panic.
Try starting up from the Mac OS X Install Disc by inserting the disc and restarting your computer, holding down the C key as the startup chime is ending. Then choose Installer > Open Disk Utility (in Panther) or (in Tiger) click 'Next' at the language screen and choose Utilities > Disk Utility and select the hard drive in the left column. Choose the First Aid tab. Click Repair Disk to test and repair the hard drive.
Once you have repaired the hard drive with the Install disc's Disk Utility, then try to restart normally, and go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Click on the top hard drive icon in the left sidebar and note the S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom right of the pane. What does it say?
Select the named boot volume in the left sidebar, ("Macintosh HD" unless you've renamed it). What is the hard drive capacity and how much space remains available on it? Repair permissions on it.
See if a little hard drive maintenance helps things out.

  • IBook G4 - Problems Starting after installing RAM

I installed a 512 MB RAM chip last night, triple-checked it for correct specifications. I've installed, uninstalled, and re-installed it several times, each time getting the same problem. I turn my iBook on, the start-up screen does its thing, and then it stops at the message "Login Window starting," right before my desktop would normally load. This does this with and without the RAM installed. I tried the disk utility CD 1, and it didn't seem to do any good. Any suggestions?

Does the iBook boot and run from the install CD?
If so run DiskUtility from the pull down menu. Still runs OK?
This would seem to indicate pretty good functionality.
Is it possible your software configuration wasn't healthy before you installed the RAM? You might have to do a re-install of the OS.

  • Safari 4.0 upgrade crashed my iBook - can't start the computer anymore!

    Hello!
After the latest Safari 4.0 upgrade my iBook doesn't start anymore.
I've tried holding down the option key while restarting to be able to select the hard drive and then boot, but that didn't work. Also a safe boot didn't do anything. I finally connected the iBook to my iMac via Firewire and used Disk Utilities to try to repair the iBook's HD. Unfortunately it got a 'repair failed' message. Then I got the spinning wheel, Disk Utilities stopped responding and I couldn't close it.
The last thing I tried was the 'fsck' command on the apple website and tried it. This is what I got:
    localhost:/ root# /sbin/fsck -fy
    ** /dev/rdisk0s3
    ** Root file system
    ** Checking HFS Plus volume.
    ** Checking Extents Overflow file.
    ** Checking Catalog file.
    disk0s3: I/0 error.
    Invalid sibling link
    (4, 253)
    ** Volume check failed.
Does anybody know how I can fix my iBook?
    Thanks,
    Julia

Thanks for hanging in there with me. I had hoped the discs would work since I can't find mine.
I connected the iBook to my iMac via Firewire and used Disk Utilities to try to repair the iBook's HD. Unfortunately it got a 'repair failed' message. Then I got the spinning wheel, Disk Utilities stopped responding and I couldn't do anything on the iMac. When I tried again I couldn't eject and had to shut down the power again. Not good.
The technician at the local MacHouse thinks that the iBook already had a problem and the upgrade brought it out. Does that sound plausible to you? I never noticed any problem, it worked just fine. I am hesitant to upgrade anything now on my iMac.
I am going to try to find the right discs and will try an install and archive or install and erase.
Is there anything else I can try in FireWire mode?

  • IBook has troubles starting up: (?)

The iBook of a friend has troubles starting up. She needs an apple for her studies and has had nothing but trouble with this iBook. She has already have to replace the motherboard and faulty RAM at the store where she bought it.
The most recent trouble is this: sometimes the iBook won't start or it takes a long time before it does. On the screen appears (?). Also when she's working with the laptop, the respons time is sometimes very long.
Her teachers said her that this problem is caused by the hard disk. But I've found a topic of a forum, where somebody had the exact same problem and where replacing the HD didn't help.
Does somebody have an idea what could be an answer?
Also, the store only gives a one-year warranty, but since there have been so many parts replaced, isn't there a two year warranty?
    Thanks in advance.

How long has it been since hard drive maintenance was performed? If it's been awhile, try booting into Safe Mode. This will take quite awhile longer than a normal startup because it does a file check and repair of the hard disk.

  • My ibook g4 wont start up...

My ibook g4 wont start up. I get a long high pitched beep the light n front flashes, then normal start up beep. Sounds like its struggling to start up, still black screen. I've tried rebooting every way, and from start up disk. Please help!
I don't care if I can't fix it to use it again. I just want to at least be able to get some stuff off of it...
    Thanks!!

    Hello,
That would seem to me like a problem with the memory module installed under the keyboard.
Try removing it and restarting the iBook. If it boot up fine, then try reseating the memory back in.
It could be a faulty memory and may require replacement.
You may also want to try resetting the PMU, it might help.

  • IBook wont fully start up

My iBook wont fully start up. It started to freeze about three days ago, my only way of unfreezing it was to shut it down with the power button. Someone recommend that I boot it back up by pressing shift when it turned on. I did that and it worked. However, I soon found out that by doing that I disabled my airport, sound, and iTunes. So i went and restarted my computer using the Mac 10.3X software already on my computer. That worked for a while but then my computer began to freeze again. I switched it off and now it won't fully turn on. At first it just made whirring noises, but after a while it would go to the grey screen with the apple and pinwheel. The screen then goes blue... and stays that way. I tried starting it up normally and i also tried starting it up with the boot again. Neither worked. Please please help me. I am a student and i can't function without a computer! Thanx

    Hey Alex,
Try pulling your Airport card and see if that changes anything.
    Then try safe mode:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564
other wise try booting into you CD/DVD OS installer and check the hard drive.

  • IBook G3 wont start...nothing happens...Please help!

    Hiya Everyone,
My iBook G3 wont start-up. It was fine yesterday but today when i turned tried to turn it on it was completely unresponsive.
When presing the power button nothing happens, no hard drive spin up, no noises...nothing.
This ever happened to anyone before?
    All help greatly appreciated.
    Daniel.

I'm sorry, Dean, but the Geniuses were correct. The iBook Logic Board Repair Extension Program is not a recall in the truest sense of the word, and only covers the specific logic board problem dealing with video. It has never covered any and all logic board problems.
    Enjoy that new MacBook!
If you want to sell the non-working iBook, PowerBook Tech buys them and parts them out. You may want to check them out.

  • Help!  G4 iBook won't start up

I had to shut down and restart my iBook two or three times in succession. On the final time, the iBook began to start up, but then there was a 'click' and it shut down completely. Now I can't get it to start up at all, when I press the start up button nothing at all happens. The battery is fully charged, I have tried it running off the mains, and have also tried holding down Shift etc. I can't start it up from the CD either, as it won't pull the CD in.
    Can anyone help please?

Here is an article that might help:
Troubleshooting: my computer won't turn on:

It will recommend disconnecting all peripherals and resetting the PMU among other things. If nothing helps, please post back.

  • After stalled software update, my iBook will not start up all the way.

    Here's my problem:
I was almost done with software update when the process seemed to stall for no apparent reason. The software update status screen said my iBook was 67% done with hard drive optimization, and stayed in this state for 15-20 minutes. The computer itself was not frozen, however, so I forced quit and tried to restart the machine.
On the restart, however, I couldn't get out of the gray screen with a status circle made up of small rectangles. I tried to force restart, but the situation did not improve.
    Can anyone help me?
    Thanks.
    -Aaron

    Welcome to Apple Discussions Aaron
Force quit in the middle of an installation spells "trouble". Try starting the computer in Safe Mode. If successful, restart the computer and see if it fully boots. If not, you more than likely have directory damage that needs to be repaired. Disk Utility may be up to the task.

  • Ibook won't start up. Please help

Hi, i have a ibook G4 running OS X, which will not turn on properly. When i turn it on you can hear the start up noise and the screen with the apple logo and the little loading circle comes up. But after a little while on that screen it will just turn it self off again.
I have run the apple hardware test of the instillation disc and it said everything is fine.
I have tryed resetting the PRAM, but still the same thing happens when starting up.
I have tryed resetting the PMU, but still the same thing happens when starting up.
I don't know what to do next. Any help would be great.
    Thanks.

One last question, is there any freeware that will do the same job as Disk Warrior.
It's not free, but Data Rescue II is here:
    http://www.prosofteng.com/products/datarescueinfo.php
The advantage is that you can download a free demo and see if you can even rescue your drive. If the demo works you can pull 5 MBs out of your down drive then pay for the full up version if you want.
If it doesn't work you don't have to waste the money and Disk Warrior is most likely not going to work any better. I've had Data Rescue II work twice in the last few months when Disk Warrior said it couldn't.
