IBook G4 and External Widescreen LCD?

Hi All,
I've been using the Screen Spanning Doctor successfully for a couple months, but am looking into getting a 19" widescreen LCD display (the Acer AL1916W to be exact).
Does anyone have any experience with hooking an iBook G4 up to an external widscreen display using the hack?

using a 24" widescreen Dell and the hack allows you to run it at the native resolution... you'll have no problems.

I am using my iBook G4 and an external moniter at the same time. Here is the problem. Right now it uses the mirror display and I was wondering if there was a way that I could turn that off. I tried to use system preferences but it said that the "arrangement" icon has been hidden. Is there any way around this?

Anyobe ever hook their ibook up to a widescreen lcd hdtv/monitor?

i just got a sharp aquos 32" hdtv monitor. i have a s-video output cable for my ibook and i want to hook it up to the tv. i know it won't display 720/1080 but will it look good? will my ibook display a resolution suitable for a 32" widescreen as if it was a monitor?

i have a philips 26" hd tv and i have been watching the second season of lost on it using my ibook. it has a brilliant picture so i would recommmend it.

Switching screen off on Tecra and using external monitor/LCD TV

I recently bought an LCD TV and was looking forward to using it as the monitor for my Toshiba Tecra M2V. I have run into problems.
I seem unable to "turn off" the laptop screen and ONLY use the LCD TV screen to cary out work, play games etc. Rather I seem only to beable to COMBINE the LCD screen with my LCD, effectively creating a "two screen monitor". I have followed all the online help and still I am unable to have only one screen.
I just want the LCD TV as my screen!
Any ideas on how to do this? It is really a pain!!

Usually you should be able to do it using FN+F5 key combination. As far as I know if the unit is connected to the TV you have three possibilities (maybe depends on notebook model) LCD only, LCD and external device and just TV.
You can also try to switch it using GeForce properties:
Display properties > Settings > Advanced > GeForce tab > Device Settings > Select output device.

Problem with T400 and External Display....

I have a new T400 (less than 1 month old) with the shared memory Intel Graphics setup and I cannot get it to work with an external display of any kind.
I've tried 2 LCD panels (one widescreen, and one 4:3), 2 analog monitors, and a video projector without any luck. All of the displays I have tried work fine with my older Lenovo R61.
I've updated to the newest display drivers and tried working with the various settings under Graphics properties in Vista - Single Display (notebook, monitor), Intel Dual Display, Extended Desktop, etc. The best I got was a cloned image on the larger widescreen LCD panel that appeared for about 1 minute and then stopped. I recreated this 4 or 5 times, but the image would not stay on the external display.
Any ideas?

Move the iBooks library to external/different hard drive?

Hi! Is it possible to move the iBooks library from its default location on the boot drive (where the iBooks-application also resides) to a different hard drive?
Currently all my ebooks and PDF’s are kept in the default „Books“-folder in the home-library on the SSD-boot-drive of my Mac where the iBooks application is also kept by default (path: Users/„username“/Library/Containers/com.apple.BKAgentService/Data/Documents/iBo oks/Books). Space is getting narrow on my SSD-boot-drive so that I would like to free up approximately 20 GB by moving the entire iBooks library to a second internal HDD-drive of my Mac or to an external USB-drive.
I have not been able to find any instructions on the internet on how to move the iBooks library nor have I been successful in any of my experiments to move the „Books“-folder. What I have tried is the following:
1. I moved the original PDF-files away out of the „Books“-folder to a different drive and placed aliases from these files in the „Books“-folder. The result is that the iBooks-application will simply re-create a full size copy of the original PDF file in the „Books“-folder. I.e. no saving of disk space!
2. I copied the „Books“-folder from its default location in the user library on my internal SSD-boot-drive to a second internal HDD-drive, erased the „Books“-folder at the original location and instead placed a hard link at the original location. I verified that the hard link is working and pointing to the right location on the second drive. The result is that the iBooks-application will not recognize/show any of the PDF-files at the new location. Trying to re-import the missing PDF-files into iBooks results in the message „This book is already in your library. Do you want to replace it with the one you’re adding?“. By clicking on „Yes“ the same message returns infinitely often. I.e. no successes!
3. I repeated the same procedure as described above under 2. using the „iBooks“-folder which encloses the „Books“-folder (along with three other folders) with the same results as before. I.e. no successes!

Does anyone know how to successfully move the iBooks library to external/different hard drive?

I was in on the Mavericks beta, when iBooks was introduced. You can not believe me if you want but it isn't currently possible to store the iBooks library on external storage at this time. The ebooks must be on the path ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.BKAgentService/Data/Documents/iBooks/Books for iBooks to function properly. Any other method you may find to accomplish what you want will be unapproved and could break at any time.

Satellite A100-646 and external monitor shows black screen

Hello to everybody,
I have a similar problem with A100-646 (bought in Italy). Laptop's LCD and external monitor shows black screen but system boots without other problem. When laptop is not used for a long time (half a year) it work for one week without any problem.
Unfortunately, there is no proper service in a place where I live. Perhaps, there is a problem with power supply.
Is there other idea? Does anybody have a service manual? ([email protected])

It is not easy to find shop where you can order original and new hardware components.
Best source for such parts is definitely eBay where you can buy used but well working components.
Upgrade? You must know that upgrade on mobile computers is not the same as on desktops. Cooling possibilities are not the best and each notebook model has optimized cooling system for original parts. So new graphic card can be more powerful and produce more heat and it is definitely not good for your notebook. So best thing you can do is to replace it with original part.

Sync Problems With Ipod and External HDD

Ive just got a new 4G ipod after returing it because of HDD problems and when i try to sync with itunes, it manages to sync a random number of songs (ill get to that later) often about a 100 and the says "Ipod could not be written or read from". The thing is that i use an Lacie 80Gb External USB 2.0 Powered Harddrive as my Music library. Also it seems not to be USB timeout because ive tried to power both the External HDD and Ipod with an external powered USB 2.0 Hub. Ive found out that the number of songs that syncs each time depends on the songs, because it seems that some songs cannot just be copied (ive tried to copy them through finder and it dosent work either, but moving and/or deleting them works) and they arent in anyway different(what i know of) to the songs that manages to be synced to the ipod. None of the songs have any kind of DRM restrictions.

Ive had it on my Ibook before and then moved it to the HDD because of Space Shortage, and then just added as ive aquired more music. Idon't Really Remeber but i think it worked before without any hiccups. oh well otherwise i can just delete those files because theyre only single files here and there. but its quite irritating because they don't seem to have any kind of corruption.

24" Widescreen LCD Acer goes blank

I have a 17" Macbook pro and a 24 inch widescreen LCD monitor by Acer (al2423w). I am trying to use both monitors in mirrored mode (lid up) using a usb mouse and the macbooks keyboard.
I have tried connecting the acer through the dvi-vga adapter and I've tried a direct dvi connection and the same thing happens with each - the acer works and then goes blank. Now I know the acer works because I used it as the primary display for my PC but for some reason when connected to my mac it works perfectly/beautifully/wonderfully for about 10 seconds... and then goes blank without any blinking error lights, or messages.
The monitor is detected, connected, powered, and even works and displays in mirrored mode but then for some reason stops. While it's working I can even change the resolutions and refresh rates without any problems.
I would greatly appreciate any explanations for this issue.

Quicksilver G4 + Widescreen LCD DVI problem - VERY VERY WEIRD!

I bought a G4/867 Quicksilver off eBay. It came with Panther. I already have a 20.1" BenQ widescreen LCD.
I installed Tiger, then noticed the DVI display would fail (display strange blue/black artefacts or a 'fuzzy screen'. I have screenshots if anybody wants them. It is intermittent, and usually occurs after one of the following events:
* powering on the computer
* waking from sleep
* switching from VGA (my pc) input to DVI (my mac) via the monitor
I tested:
* another video card (with native DVI): same problem
* another computer (Mac mini): no problem
* VGA: no problem
I returned the unit and got another. I ran Panther on it for a week with no problems. I just upgraded to Tiger. All the problems above are now happening again. It happened both on 10.4.0 and 10.4.6 (i.e. pre and post update).
If anyone has any experience at all in this, please post here or let me know if you need more info.

Sorry, forgot to mention it is independent of screen resolution.
Native screen res is 1680x1050. And it works perfectly sometimes, just not reliably. Have tried at 1024x768, 1280x1024, 640x480 and replicated the fault on all of them.
It also happens at startup, which made me think hardware. But it could be as the OS display drivers are loading. The fact that it worked with Panther makes me think software.

If it doesn't fail, the screen looks perfect. The same screen also works with a PC and other macs.
To clarify, the G4 is using an ADC-->DVI converter, but fault in this has been eliminated by:
- using the same converter with another dvi monitor (no problem)
- installing a native dvi graphics card in the g4 (same problem)

Want external widescreen not internal 4:3 - but perspective is stretched...

I've just plugged in a new external widescreen, using the mini-VGA to VGA adaptor (btw, I know that spanning doesn't work - it only mirrors).
The external screen just loads up in the iMac's maximum resolution (1024x768) and is stretched. I want to make the perspective correct and I'm not sure how.
The only other settings in my displays are 800x600 and 640x480. I've just downloaded SwitchResX but I'm hesitant to simply make a new resolution.
Any suggestions?!?

We know that Apple has limited the Graphics cards in the iMac G4. There is a hack called "Screen Spanning Doctor" that will re-enable all the available resolutions and allow dual-screen mode but it only works for the 1GHz 15" iMac G4 (which is a GeForce 4 MX). Applying this hack may permanently damage your iMac and will invalidate any warranty left.
This hack won't work on the GeForce 2 MX machines like yours. Here are the developer specs for your display.
Personally I would advise sticking to XGA. This is the highest you can output.

ViewSonic VX2235wm widescreen LCD

I'm a new Mac user - received my mini last night. I bought a 22 inch Viewsonic widescreen LCD (VX2235wm) and am happy to say that the Mac Mini supports the monitor's native resolution of 1680x1050 (DVI connection).

I recently bought the 22" Viewsonic widescreen (VX2235) for my Mac mini. I've found that if I do anything too video intensive (e.g. watch video or use Photoshop) for very long that I get "snow" or "static" running through my screen. Then it will just turn off as if there isn't a signal. It usually comes back up quickly but the problem persists and after a short time it won't come back up. Then it will say that the frequency is out of range. I called Viewsonic and they said to call the computer manufacturer because it was probably my video card. I have the ATI Radeon 9200 card with 32MB DDR. I am using the DVI cable that came with the monitor. At first I thought it was the particular monitor, but after exchanging it, I still had the problem. Any thoughts or help would be appreciated.

Can't use ipod and external HD anyon imac g3 after using it on intel mac...

hi, i've recently bought a intel imac and it has (what else) tiger on it. My girlfriend has an old g3 imac with jaguar on it. Today I connected my ipod to the old g3 imac (because i needed some files, about 10gb) and it didn't appear in finder or in itunes.
After trying some stuff, like resetting and retrying, etc., I went home to get my external HD and again, when i plugged it in, it didn't appear in finder. Strange, because before I had my new computer, the ipod and the HD were connected to the g3 imac all the time and on the intel imac, they still work perfect.
Then, I went to disk-utility and it recognised my HD but when i tried to activate the external HD from there, nothing happened. No error, no message, nothing.
But (and as we say in Belgium, now comes the ape out of the sleeve) when i clicked repair (in disk utility), it said that i didn't have the permissions to activate it...
--it was something like cannot activate dev/disk/blablabla dont have permission something something...
Could it be that my new computer has put some sort of protection on my ipod and external HD? and how can I remove that protection?
Or is there another solution for this strange and dark mystery??????

I have 2 ipods, both would not work on G3 iBook once connected to an Intel iMac. Took me a long time on the phone to Apple to figure this one.
It seems to be a conflict with the 'volume format' of the ipod. Plugging it into an Intel will change the format to 'Mac OS extended (journaled)' for some reason my G3 would not recognise it then. To fix it I plugged ipod to the Intel and went to disk utility. Select the ipod (hopefully you can activate it). Go to the Erase menu and change the volume format to 'Mac OS extended'.
It should stay on that format and work on both computers.

Radeon 7000 with a 22" Widescreen LCD Display?

My Dad's 17" CRT monitor on his B&W G3 tower gave up its life, and I'm looking to replace it with a widescreen 22" LCD display (1680*1050 native resolution). The tower's stock ATI Rage 128 (16MB) card is most likely not able to handle this resolution (in addition, it lacks a DVI port, providing only analog output which I find looks rather crummy on an LCD display), so I'd also like to upgrade to a Radeon 7000 with a DVI port. There are a number of these cards floating around on eBay in 32MB and 64MB varieties. I also spotted the Radeon 9200 (PCI variety), which is more costly and probably beyond the needs of my Dad's web-browsing, mail, and iPhoto needs.
Has anyone successfully run a 22" widescreen display at native resolution via a DVI port, using a Radeon 7000? If so, does the 32MB variety suffice, or would I have to look at a 64MB variety? The Radeon 7000 specs page <http://ati.amd.com/products/radeon7000/radeon7000me/specs.html> does not list 1680*1050 resolution (nor any widescreen resolution for that matter), but neither does the specs page for the much more modern Radeon 9200 <http://ati.amd.com/products/radeon9200/radeon9200me/specs.html>, so I figure that the specs pages don't tell the whole story. Yesterday I picked up a Samsung 216BW 21.6" display with 1680*1050 resolution. Although I'm still awaiting arrival of the Radeon 9200 (64MB) card, I thought I'd try to hook up the monitor to the stock Rage 128 (16MB) card to see what happens. I powered up the B&W G3, and was pleasantly surprised to see the Apple logo appear followed by the startup screen. I logged into my account, and found that the Rage 128 was actually displaying in widescreen mode, albeit at some non-native resolution. Naturally, the next step was to pull down the displays menu and check the other resolution options. The menu read as follows:

1280 x 1024, 60 Hz, Millions
1680 x 1050, 60 Hz, Millions
1680 x 1050, 60 Hz, Millions
I chose the last item (can't say why this item was listed twice), held my breath, and an instant later was blown away to find the old Rage driving the display at native resolution with a very decent looking image (even though this is over the analogue RGB cable). So I can confirm that the Rage 128 does support a 21.6" widescreen display at native resolution (and I would presume the same applies for 20" and 22" widescreen displays, since they all share the same resolution). I'll also mention that the B&W G3 tower is running Mac OS X 10.4.9.
In any case, I still don't regret having ordered the Radeon, as the Rage 128 does not properly support fullscreen slideshow mode and transitions in iPhoto 5, and my Dad spends a lot of his time dabbling with iPhoto slideshows.
