IBook G4 arrow keys
For some unknown reason the arrow keys (page up/page down/home/end) on my iBook have stopped working? Does anyone have any idea what could cause this?

I'm having a similar issue on a PowerBook G4. In this case, only the right arrow key does not work correctly. All other arrow keys work as expected. In some apps (TextEdit, Safari) pressing RIGHT arrow does nothing, in other apps it seems to be mapped incorrectly. For instance in iTunes, right arrow key press produces the same efffect as "tab" (namely, tabbing between search field, browse box, library pane, and music list).
In response to your questions: All other keys work correctly. Have not installed RAM or an AirPort Extreme card. Have not opened the keyboard. FN+RIGHT Arrow (as well as UP arrow) key in Safari correctly produces a page down effect deduced from the fact that FN+LEFT arrow (and FN+DOWN arrow) key also produces page down effect. Other users on the machine do not have the issue.
Additional info: the user where the problem exists is the Administrator user.
Your help (and perhaps an explanation of whats going on here) will be very much appreciated!

I have an iBook G4, I've only had it since May. maybe April of 2005.
just one day ago, the left arrow key (also marked "home") stopped responding.
I can physically press the key just as always. Feels normal.
but it doesn't do anything. the cursor doesn't move left when it is pressed.
the other arrow keys work fine.
command+left arrow doesn't do anything either.
I'm not terribly abusive to the keyboard.
I use the up and down arrow keys more than the other arrow keys.
all the other keys on the keyboard respond fine.
is something broken?
I lifted out the keyboard and there did not appear to be and dirt or debris of any kind. What do I do?

ironically, I ended up doing exactly as you suggested just a day befor you posted! Actually, two days before because I'm in Tokyo, but I'm from the Austin area. The Tokyo Shibuya ward Apple Store is no exception to the world class service. I was concerened I would end up paying for a new keyboard, and fully expected that. Boy, was I surprised when they made my day....
not only was it free (they said still under warranty) but also they replaced it while I waited!
One tip for anyone in Tokyo who needs to get help from the Apple stores here, go early to make an appointment, because they get booked up fast!
This is a very densely populated city, and you can bet they have a 3rd store on the way, if not a fourth...

P.S. I had a Yikes G4 400 back in college, great machine, but did have bus errors a lot. Is yours upgraded (i presume) ? Do you or did you ever get those bus errors? (particularly in the old OS) -

It's odd that they all quit at once. You could try popping off the keycaps and cleaning underneath, just in case an accumulation of debris is the problem:

Also, try an external keyboard and see if it has the same problem. If it does, the problem likely lies somewhere other than with the keyboard itself.

The new keyboard/mouse pane in Tiger's System Preferences now allows one to change application shortcuts. I am left-handed and wish to change the 'Back' and 'Forward' menu commands to the left and right arrow keys in selected applications. I was able to do this without problem on both my G4 Dual and Mac Mini (both with Apple external keyboards). My iBook, however, will not take the change. When I try to set the shortcut, the 'no way' bell rings. Can anyone help?

Recently I've noticed my right arrow key is no longer working. I also have a USB keyboard and all works fine so on that so I assume this is a hardware failure.
Am I going to need a whole new keyboard, or is it possible to repair the one key?
Does anyone know of any issues or common faults to check before I make enquiries on a new keyboard?

ThanksAre you under warranty? If so, it is Apple's problem. If not, it's possible a little debris has collected under the keycap and is causing the key to malfunction. It should be possible to pull off the keycap and check. I have done this on my iBook, but never on my MBP. If you have access to an Apple Store, you could see if someone at the genius bar could show you how to remove the keycap and check under it.
Testing with an external USB keyboard is exactly the right thing to do. It demonstrates that the problem lies with the built in keyboard.
Are you planning to do the work yourself? If so, here is a site that might be useful to you:

It doesn't cover everything, but you can at least get an idea of what might be involved in a repair. But again, if you're under warranty, let Apple do it.

Bridge CC crashes while using arrow keys to switch images
Adobe Photoshop CC 2014 Adobe Bridge 2014 on Mac is crashing every time I press an arrow key to move through images in bridge. I can click to manually select images with no problem, but using the up/down arrow keys to move to the next image up/down brings up the spinning beach ball and immediately locks the program up, requiring a force quit.
Did the usual Mac permissions and fsck stuff to no avail. Ideas?
DanThanks for moving my post to this correct forum. (I'm afraid I missed it when I originally posted.) A bit more information based on attempts to fix and on further attempts to use the program.
After launching Bridge — before I select any specific image — it initially seems to work correctly. For example, I can use menu items and select and open folders. However...
Once I drill down through folders to show raw files in the browser the problems begin. I can manually select an image by clicking on it, but the program the locks up if I do things such as attempt to navigate to another image using the up/down keyboard arrows or select anything from a menu that would perform an action on the image. (The problem happens with any image selected — not one particular image, and with images that worked fine until 48 hours ago.)
ACR still works. I can double click an image and open the raw converter, and I can doubly click a smart object image in Photoshop do go back to the raw editor and it allows me to edit.
I did the step of holding down command-option-shift at Bridge startup and selecting all three options to delete the cache and so forth. Still no joy.
I did the usual Mac disk/file system repair stuff — repairing permissions and repairing disk — to no avail.
I downloaded and reinstalled Bridge but the problem persists.
Since I have a full backup of the drive on which Bridge is installed and since this backup drive is bootable, I double clicked the copy of Bridge on the backup drive... and it opened (slowly!) but worked correctly. (Not that this means much, but my second instance on my laptop continues to run fine.)
I'm stuck, in a serious way, at this point. Thoughts?

Arrow key and space bar do not work scrolling in PDF document with film file?
I have made a single PDF file from 26 different InDesign files, first exported to PDF:s. Text and photos. One of the documents contain a film file (.mov). As I scroll through the documents in full screen mode, once I start to play and stop the film I can no longer use the spacebar nor right arrow key to get to the next document. Only mouse works.
Adobe 11.0.10 MBP with Yosemite.

Crtl+C, Ctrl+V, Ctrl+X, Tab, and arrow keys do not work at all in FF4.0b13 and later. I am not sure about earlier versions as this is the first version I have tried.
I found this helpful article (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1381) and worked my way through the section "Some keys don't work as expected".
All the following functions/settings are disabled or turned off:
Text to speech / Speak selected text when the key is pressed
Slow Keys
Mouse Keys.
The keyboard viewer just confirms my list of keys that are not working.
Starting in safe mode makes no difference; nor does booting from the Mac OS X Install Disc and running Terminal from the Utilities menu. The same keys as before fail to work.
This seems to confirm that it's a hardware issue. Anyone have any suggestions? -
Up/Down Arrow keys do not perform their function on SOME websites or at SOME times, on other websites and at other times these keys work fine, updated firefox, restarted computer. turned off cursor key option in Advanced tab, using autoscrolling option.
You may have switched on [http://kb.mozillazine.org/accessibility.browsewithcaret caret browsing].
You can press press F7 (on Mac: fn + F7) to toggle caret browsing on/off.

Arrow keys - up, down, left right - not working in Safari 2.0.4 (419.3)
Hello all - need some help as my arrows keys in Safari have ceased working - can't scroll up or down using them and wondering why. Yes, they do work in all other app's, Yes I have deleted pref files for Safari, done most common maintenace and yes I have searched extensively for any help online.
I did install the beta for Safari 3, and then promptly uninstalled, leaving me as I am and have been for a few days without working arrow keys.
Any help out there is most appreciatedhmmmm...no help, no replies.....

I read your question when you first posted and had absolutely no idea why this problem would occur. So I didn't respond.
I'd guess that's the same with everyone else who came across your question. People aren't ignoring you purposefully - they just don't know the answer or have any ideas to troubleshoot this problem.
Of course, that could change. You only posted two days ago, and there's a chance that in this user-to-user forum, where all people who help are volunteering their time, anyone who happens to have an idea of why this problem is occurring just hasn't come across your question yet. -

It worked under Windows, now I use OS 10.8 and have to apply a preset with a click or Return button but after that the pop-up menu close so I have to open it once again to change a preset. Please help. Thank you!The filter panel is a shortcut for the content panel and it only effects the content of that window. So if you have a folder it will only see this as a folder and not with its content. (a Stack behaves about the same, being different in only counting the first file in the filter panel criteria but not what is in the stack itself)
You have a view work arounds, first is use menu view / show items from subfolders (this can take some time especially if you have not used caching before on this content) and this builds visible thumbs for all content and that can be used for filtering.
Or use the find command (Edit / find) and inhere specify the source and fill in the criteria include subfolders and this will give you the correct result.
When you create a smart collection the find command also pops up given you the same opportunity to get the results in a collection, but since a collection is only a bunch of aliases referring to the originals you might be a bit careful with editing and deleting. -
The title says it all, I'm not really sure if this is the proper place to post this as it's not a "bug" per se. I noticed on the list of bugs "fixed" in Firefox 10 scrolling more than one line with the arrow keys was one of them. I know a lot of people hated the one-line thing too so I'd suggest in future releases it should be a preference we can change.
You can right-click either Back or Forward button to open the tab history list.

In Dreamweaver CC code view, how do I reenable shift-control+arrow keys to select words?
In previous versions of Dreamweaver (for Windows but presumably for other operating systems as well) and in pretty much any other text editor (except maybe for vi/m but including the one I'm using to write this message in now). I can select characters using shift plus the arrow keys and select words by pressing shift-control plus the arrow keys. It seems you now have to use shift-alt to select words. I don't want to have to undo about 25 years of habit just for Dreamweaver.
Please say this is an easy setting I can uncheck somewhere! Thanks!That is an issue that has come up a lot lately...

After the last OS X update (a security update I think), two things happened:
my iMac would not boot (gray screen) or if it did boot, the mouse wasn't recognized and I couldn't mouse to the PW field to log in - nor did tabbing or any keystrokes get me there. I fixed this by unpludding peripherals (back up drive), but know I can't boot unless they are unplugged and it makes using TimeMachine a pain in the arse.
My wired, extended mac keyboard now types without me, primarily, as far as I can tell, the arrow key(s). .................................... So, for example, those periods you see here are because I touched the right arrow key and off it went until I pressed ESC. Also, sometimes they just start going off on their own. For example, I can be in sleep mode and all of a sudden the screen will wake and the PW field will start filling with periods, just like you see above. ***?
Seriously, you would think that apple would have a response for this. I have searched their support site and NOTHING. I've seen some older threads on reseting certain things. Does anyone have any summer 2013 updates?

If you open the recovery drive (partition) it should only have a single folder (Recovery).
To make sure that your not saving restore points to that drive.
See:
Start, Control Panel, System, System Protection tab. Make sure the D drive partition is set to OFF so that it does not save there.

How do I get the arrow keys to move one character at a time in the address bar or search box?
I can no longer get the arrow keys to advance or retard "one character at a time" in the address bar, the search box, or on any form in Firefox. This feature works in other browsers without a problem. The "Home" and "End" keys do not work either. How do I fix this behavior?
How do I configure the AX to connect to the hub's wireless network? It will only scan one base station Airport Express at a time in the Airport Utility. I think what I am trying to do is use the hub as a router to the two AX's. Is there a specific way to set this up?
To set up the AX to join a wireless network as a "Wireless Client," using the AirPort Utility, either connect to the AX's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, try these settings:
Launch the AirPort Utility.
Select the AX.
If not already connected to the AX's wireless network, go ahead and switch to it when prompted.
AirPort Utility > Select the AX > Manual Setup > AirPort > Wireless
Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
Network Name: <type in the network name/SSID of the wireless network that you want to join or select it from the pop-up menu>
Wireless Security: None OR, if you are using security on your wireless network:
Wireless Security: <Select the appropriate level of security for the existing wireless network: WPA/WPA2 Personal | WPA2 Personal>

Verify Password: <re-enter the same security password>

Bridge to InDesign contact sheets (CS3) creating frames around the images
Forgive me if this topic should not be here. We use the contact sheets to ID from Bridge script quite a lot at work (when it works -> CS2). Since upgrading to CS3 it works (hooray) however, it creates two boxes with a black stroke around each image.
