IBook G4 Backlight won't light

Hiya -
Got a bit of a problem with my iBook.
For a little while now, it's been having a now and then, intermittent problem where the backlight wouldn't come on, and to be honest, it's been a while since it happened, so I don't recall the particulars of what seemed to cause it., but putting it to sleep then waking it seemed to solve it.
Thing is, the other day, I accidentally dropped it while closed, it landed on the display case side, and now the backlight doesn't come on at all. I know it isn't that there's nothing on the screen - can see what's on it with the room lights bright or with a flashlight - so it's not a sleep problem. In fact, close the screen and the sleep light still comes on.
Anyway,  I am fairly technically adept, provided I've got instructions, so I was wondering what the probable causes might be. Loose cable connection? broken backlight bulb? Other? I'd like to repair it, and locate a manual if I can.
I know, it's a bit old - 5 years - but if buying a new one was the easiest option I'd have done it already, so not to be snarky, but please don't say "Dude, it's old, just get a new one." I see people saying that all the time to others, it never helps. Unless there's no other way that won't cost almost as much, I'd like repair advice.
Anyway, thanks - Hope someone can help me keep my iBook going a bit longer.

Brett,
Turns out it's a logic board thing, not the inverter
Uhh who gave you that diagnosis given:
I know it isn't that there's nothing on the screen - can see what's on it with the room lights bright or with a flashlight - so it's not a sleep problem.
So actually the logic board is working fine. It's possibly the reed switch but they usually fail in the open position or that fuse is gone on the logic board or the cable is open/shorted. Did you check that out?
I've decided to mod it and get a MacBook instead.
Which wouldn't work if the logic board was toast which I don't think is the case.
Have you run an external monitor?
I asked about this elsewhere, and was told you'd be the guy to ask about this plan
Yah email me (click on "spudnuty"). If you're tossing the extra parts I could use them in my donation efforts.
Richard
Basically, I'm planning to put it in the shell of a Mac SE.
iBook 1.2 GHz G4 Mac OS X (10.4.11)
Is it a 14" or 12"? I use a 14 every day and walk into my office if I want to watch a streaming video (iMac G5).
I'd like to be able to hook it up to the internal screen connector (long shot, yeah, but who knows).
Yah that video cable (LVDS in AppleSpeak) is totally different people have been trying to crack that for years. There was a guy in Green Bay a few years ago. Forget how that came out.
Otherwise, the external VGA video output adapter (and if that's the case, is there some way to get it to mirror to an external larger screen?) would have to do.

  • 24" LED Display won't light but other functions all work

My 24" LED Display suddenly won't light (it flashes the desktop once in a while). The sound, the USB ports, and the Magsafe power all work. It's just the display that isn't functioning. 1) Is there a fix? 2) Will Apple take on the repair for the $400 fixed repair fee? Thanks

I have the same display and mine burned out on the same day as yours. I wonder if our displays were made at the same time and the backlights are all reaching EOL. It is somewhere over four years old (discontinued in 2010); one year after support runs out if it is tied to a computer purchased with Apple Care (I did this for my Airport Time Capsule). I used my display a lot as I work from home. It never occurred to me the backlight would burn out.
My question specifically is the cost of replacing the backlights. How much is it? Is it worth it? The current Dell Ultra Sharp 24" monitor is about $500 and is better resolution and color. If I could afford it, I would buy the Retina iMac, just for the display, although the computer is pretty hot too;-).

  • My screen won't light up

My screen won't light up but it still works is my backlighting messed up or is it something more serious.

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup. See:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

MacAIR keyboard light won't light up automatically, although I did tick where it says 'adjust keyboard light in low light' . It's OSX Yosemite 10.10

    Good morning Otabek_USA,
If your MacBook Air's keyboard backlighting is not behaving as it should, I would suggest that you reset the computer's System Management Controller. Use the steps in this article -
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) - Apple Support
    Specifically -
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
Note: Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Best,
    Brett L

  • ITunes, app store, iBooks store, etc won't load and I can't figure out why. I tried rebooting and it didn't help. Everything else works fine. Help please?

iTunes, app store , iBooks store, etc won't load and I don't know why. Everything else works fine, and I've rebooted it. The problem is still there and I know I have a good Internet connection. Help please?

Have you tried disconnecting and re-connecting to your network ?. And when you say rebooted do you mean a reset ? If not then try that : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
You could also try closing those apps completely. From the home screen (i.e. not with any of those apps 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the iTunes, App Store and iBooks apps to close them, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.

  • My battery life at a full 100% charge is about 2 hours 22 minutes (backlight and key lights at lowest level). Should I go complaining to Apple or do I just need different software?

My battery life at a full 100% charge is about 2 hours 22 minutes (backlight and key lights at lowest level). Should I go complaining to Apple or do I just need different software? I've only had my mac book since August 2011. The battery dies in 2 to 3 hours with some web surfing (little video play) and photo editing etc. I really don't feel like taking my computer all the way to the apple store to wait there for 5 hours to hear that I need to call someone blah blah blah. Any advice? (BTW Safari hasn't been working since I last updated my mac, WHYYYY?)

  • I am not able to access the history button that will empty my cache----they won't light up so I can use them and I am having lots of problems with function

My computer is running stupid and I am being told by my malware bytes that I don't have any problems and when I try to clear my cache none of the buttons work after show history. THEY are all useless and won't light up to use them. I also have not been able to set up zoho as my default email address for all default emails====windows won't let me even though i disabled windows email, I still can't set up zoho.com

When you use the private browsing feature, Firefox does not keep your history after your session. You don't need to clear history manually, you can just close Firefox.
If you're looking for another way to clear you cache, you can use this one:
Open the Options dialog using either:
    * orange Firefox button > Options > Options
    * Tools menu (if you have the classic menu bar) > Options
Click Advanced, then on the Network mini-tab look for the Cached Web Content section and click the "Clear Now" button.
If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.
Perhaps, though, we should step back and ask for a more specific description of running wack. What's going on?

  • Keyboard backlight won't turn on after spill.

Yeah so, me being a complete idiot, I was holding an open bottle of Snapple right next to me while laying down on my bed browsing stuff when I inevitably spill it everywhere. All over my sheets, clothes, and of course my keyboard. I immediately turned it upside down and drained the liquid, also rubbed the entire keyboard with a wet rag and some rubbing alcohol. All the liquid/stickiness is gone and the keys work perfectly fine, albeit the smell is still faintly there. But the real problem is now my backlight won't work. I noticed it flicker while cleaning it but thought it was nothing.
Any general way on how to fix this? And no, I'm not spending a thousand bucks and wait a month for some dudes to take the whole thing apart and wipe out my harddrive again for no reason.

    OK, Wow.
Whenever a liquid spill occurs the first thing that has to happen is the laptop should be shut down immediately. All power must be removed as soon as possible. It is especially important that the battery be disconnected and removed.
All affected parts must be removed from the laptop. No attempt should be made to start/restart the computer since this could potentially damage the logic board beyond all repair.
Then all affected parts would be washed in deionized water and blown dry with compressed air. (In a water spill the deionized water is probably not as critical. Depends on the mineral content of the water.).
This is especially true of the large chips on the logic board. Liquid can wick under them and cause havoc for weeks if not months after the incident.
The logic board should be placed in a drying/dehumidifing oven for at least two days. Longer depending on the spill.
The keyboard is a separate matter as described below.
This is how these keyboards work:
This is the contactor array of a MacBook Pro 2011 13" . You're looking at it from back to front. Those round dots are where the silicone rubber "cones" cause the front array to make contact with the back array, telling the computer which key has been pushed. The width of these (I think deposited silver ) traces is about 0.5 mm.
Now you're only looking at the just the front array. You can see that the contact pads are connected in series. A break anywhere in the trace connecting them would cause the "downstream" keys to stop working.
So here you see a site where ionic corrosion occurred. I know that this particular MBP was exposed to water. So I bought it very cheaply. I was able to clean and completely dry out the logic board and the MBP worked fine for a while but quickly the Q - W - E - R -T - Y - P keys got wonky then completely stopped working. I bought a replacement keyboard for cheap but then found out that it's held to the front frame with around 80 tiny screws. So I was using it with a BlueTooth keyboard. Recently I bit the bullet and for $69 bought an entire top case for my machine. Putting it in meant that the everything had to come out of and off the top case.
So you can see from the amount of corrosion, it doesn't take much to cause a failure. In this case a drop of liquid less than 0.5 mm would, over time with ionic action, cause a failure. There was a post about someone who had their MBP in a leather case and when they opened it up there was a lot of moisture on it. It was winter where he lived and we figured it was condensation. So even without spills this could happen.
So since your problem was with a sugary drink the sugar will be hydroscopic, that is it will attract water out of the air and keep the contact area moist. This will lead to future failures be it on the logic board on on the keyboard membranes.
The backlight being part of that array you've been looking at. (Finally got to it.)

  • Airport won't light up - nothing.  it's only  16 months old. is it unusual for it to be dead?

Airport won't light up - nothing.  I've only had it 16 months.  Is it possible that it died that quick?  Any suggestions?  Thank you very much.

Yes, it would be unusual for AirPort Express to fail after only 16 months of use. However, anything is possible, including anything from an external source like a lightning strike or power-surge to a circuit failure of the base station itself.
If you haven't already, I would try a "factory default" reset on it. You may want to do this a couple of time to make sure it "sticks." If after doing these the status light is still off and the unit does not appear to be warm to the touch when plugged in, it most likely has failed.

I don't have a computer on which to convert a digital booklet in iTunes to a useable form for iBooks.  Why won't it download using the cloud like all the other media I purchase on my ipad?

LP content can only be downloaded on a computer's iTunes (or 1st gen Apple TV), you can't download them on an iOS device - and I haven't seen anything that say it will change in iOS 8. If you don't have a computer then at the moment you won't be able to download/view LP content
    About LP : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3823
After you buy an album with iTunes LP on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, the album's songs will download directly to the device. The iTunes LP will download to iTunes on your computer when you choose Store > Check for Available Downloads.

  • Need a printer for my old iBook (old apps won't translate) but also for a MacBook Pro, 10.6.8! Anything compatible?

Need a printer for my old iBook (old apps won't translate) but also for a MacBook Pro, 10.6.8! Anything compatible?

If I understand this correctly, you wish to print from the iBook under Mac OS 9.2.x and from the MacBook Pro under Mac OS X 10.6.8 (no AppleTalk support in the latter).
What type of printer did you have in mind? Does it have to be colour? Otherwise, a monochrome laser printer may be the best choice (high print quality and a low per page cost). A networkable PostScript printer may be the most compatible. Additional information would make it easier for someone here to suggest a solution.
If you would be willing to accept some extra work and certain limitations, another way could possibly be to "print" to a PDF file on the iBook via a printer driver called PrintToPDF, and then transfer this file to the MacBook Pro and carry out the "real" printing there.
