IBook G4 Battery Not Holding Charge

I have been using an iBook G4 for over 5 years (1.42GHz, 14in, running OS 10.5).  Most of the time the iBook is connected to the power adaptor.  Only occasionally do I take it to another room and run it on battery.  In the last few weeks, when I disconnect the power adaptor, the battery will only last for 5 minutes and the ibook will shut down abruptly.  It does not go to sleep as I expect it would.  I need to reboot the unit.  I check the battery information and it looks like:
  Charge Information:
  Charge remaining (mAh):    64746
  Charging:    No
  Full charge capacity (mAh):    65511
  Health Information:
  Cycle count:    152
  Condition:    Good
  Battery Installed:    Yes
  Amperage (mA):    0
  Voltage (mV):    16115
Do I need a new battery or is there something else wrong?
The abrupt shutdown brings an annoying side problem.  Apparently the password for my wi-fi gets corrupted.  I had to delete the entry in keychain and reenter the wi-fi access information after the restart.

Hi, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It's most likely that you need a new battery.
The typical lifespan of a lithium-ion battery is two to three years, whether it is used or not. Apple tells you that it's actually better to use the battery regularly than it is to keep it on the adapter all the time.
Standard Maintenance
For proper maintenance of a lithium-based battery, it’s important to keep the electrons in it moving occasionally. Apple does not recommend leaving your portable plugged in all the time. An ideal use would be a commuter who uses her notebook on the train, then plugs it in at the office to charge. This keeps the battery juices flowing. If on the other hand, you use a desktop computer at work, and save a notebook for infrequent travel, Apple recommends charging and discharging its battery at least once per month. Need a reminder? Add an event to your desktop’s iCal. When your battery no longer holds sufficient charge to meet your needs, you may choose to replace it. If your notebook came with a built-in battery, you should have the battery replaced only by an Apple Authorized Service Provider.

The article has been updated for the latest Apple portables, but the recommendation to use the battery frequently was there long before the MacBook and MacBook Pro were introduced.

  • 'New' Exchange Battery not holding charge - Date & Time problems

I recently received a 'new' exchange battery for my 2001 500mhz white ibook (OSX 10.3.9, 320ram), as part of the Battery Exchange program, and now I'm having some new problems.
Since I started using the battery a few weeks ago, I've been having constant problems with the Date & Time reseting itself to 1969. I reset to current time, but when I turn on again, it's resets back again. Also, this battery is not holding a charge very well, lasting only about 40 minutes after fully charged (My old battery lasted 2 hours).
I calibrated the battery when i first received it, and I've reset the PMU twice, but no luck.
Thanks in advance for any help & advice....

Is there any such program for the G3s?
Only if you replaced your original battery with one from Apple within a certain time frame and within a specific range of serial numbers. Check out the details here:

  • Tungsten E2 Handheld-Battery not holding charge

    Dear Palm Support,
My battery is not holding a charge and is therefore, not synching.
Can I buy an internal battery for my Tungsten E2 on line?  If not, can you please tell me the closest location (i.e. Best Buy, Staples, Circuit City) to my house. My zip code is 19067, Yardley PA.
    Thank you very much,
    Catherine DeSimone

    How are you charging?
If you are using the sync cable, be aware that not all USB ports are alike and that most do not meet USB 2.0 specifications or have enough power to charge, further if you are using a laptop it must be turned on and connected to a wall outlet to charge your device.
If you are using the wall charger, be absolutely certain the wall outlet is powered. If it is under a desk or you have pets, it can very simply be partially out of the socket. I have also read of weird wiring, where wall switches can and do turn off outlets in other rooms.
Should the outlet be functional, try an on-charger reset. Plug into wall outlet, connect your device to the charge cable, then press the reset button on the back. Leave alone for 4 hours or overnight to recalibrate the battery.
If this does not work, the battery may need to be disconnected for a minute then reconnected. There are many threads already discussing this process which requires a Torx driver to remove the back cover.
Lastly, if your device is around 2 years old and used heavily, it is probable that you are nearing the limit of charge cycles a LithiumIon battery can accept. In this case, you must replace the battery. PDAParts.com and UsedPDAParts.com can help.
Because the E2 uses a clip to connect the battery it is not hard to do this yourself with the Torx, unlike other models that require soldering the battery.

  • Battery not holding charge

Ever since my last upgrade the battery is not holding it's charge very well. I've disabled the locator. Anybody else having problems? Any suggestions?

When the phone gets hot, the battery will not hold a charge. I've not checked to see what caused it specifically, but my Droid was working fine until one day it just went hot and the battery charge went bye-bye. I tried to recharge it, but it won't hold the charge.
I wasn't sure what was causing the phone to get hot, but I know it's not the battery itself that's getting hot. I figured this much out when I did a battery pull. The battery itself was warm, but the area where the camera was on the phone was quite toasty. I let my phone cool down for a few minutes then put the battery back. Haven't had any sort of issue since then so far. I do have my suspicions.
I believe certain apps may be playing a role here. Which one is the question. I don't have ATK and I actually have Power Manager as well. My initial guess was antivirus since it was the last app I installed before the phone went supernova. I adjusted the settings for it which I thought fixed it, but it actually got hot one more time before I did the battery pull.
It may not work for everyone, but you can try what I did and see if it fixes your issue.

  • Macbook 13" battery not holding charge though claims to be at 99% or 100%

My Macbook 13" is coming up about 3 years old but has had this problem for nearly a year now (I've just been reluctant to accept I might just need a new battery until now). Although it claims to be fully charged, it goes into sleep mode (or something similar) as early as at 92% battery and can't be woken up even when my charger is plugged back in, it needs to be turned off and back on with the button. Basically, it doesn't hold charge.
Admittedly the cycle count is on 569 so it might just be worn out. Does it just need replacing or is there a deeper, more sinister fault at work here?

  • HT4060 Battery not holding charge

My ipad battery no longer holds a charge. Happened coincidentaly with ios7 install.  I shut down all apps and options that drain the battery but it does not help.
Any thoughts other than replacing the battery?

Using the battery level meter in this manner is comparable to using your car's fuel gauge to calculate miles per gallon. The only thing that matters is the total amount of operating time from full charge to auto-shutdown.
Use the wall-mount charger that came with the iPad and charge overnight.  Do NOT use an iPod/iPhone charger.  Do NOT use a computer's USB port.  Then, operate it normally until auto shut-down (ignore any low level alerts that may appear).  An irony is that doing that test to determine the total operating time is also the procedure necessary to calibrate the battery level meter.
I'm not claiming that you do not have a problem.  I am stating, however, that we don't yet know.
    According to Apple:
    Use Your iPad Regularly
For proper reporting of the battery’s state of charge, be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month (charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down).
Elsewhere, Apple elaborates and explains that two half-discharges (or four quarter-discharges, etc.) equals one full discharge.

  • Battery not holding charge as usual

My iBook used to give me 6+ hours of run time, now I get 1.5-2 hrs. It's below the 50% mark in charging cycles on a battery app I have. I think I still have some applecare left since I bought it in late 2005. Would apple replace the battery free.

Hi, and welcome to the Palm Support Community.
Go to www.pdaparts.com where you can buy the battery for about $15 and do the job yourself (with the help of their repair videos), or they'll do the job for you for $50.

  • Replacement battery not holding charge ... why ?

    i have a 12" G4 powerbook, that had a battery which worked fine & held a charge for 3 hours ...
then the recall happened - my replacement worked good for about a year & only in the last 72 hrs.
it goes from 96% to zero with no warning at all - not to sleep mode just shuts down - why ?
i saw some other older posts, but wondered if anyone has recently had similar problems and/or
if any of those old posts got any help or support or answers ?
if apple doesn't fix the problem, what does a new battery cost ? ... thanks for you help in advance !
    [email protected]

Judging by other posts, the batteries used in the recall have not held up well. Take it back to Apple and ask them to replace it. Note that Apple considers the battery to be a consumable item, and may not replace it, however, you should ask. They will want to know how many cycles you have on your battery, which is in your system profiler under power. Battery life is measured on number of cycles not calendar time, but a year (the period when they seem to be failing) is awfully short. They symptom you describe, for a failing battery, is that it usually is under 50% before it drops to zero.
If you view comments on the Apple web site, the batteries don't garnish lots of positives. I just replaced mine with one from OWC. For your PB model, their battery would be http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/BAP12AL50RS/ .

  • Battery not holding charge on Tungsten E

I have a "new" Tungsten E that I cannot use off of the charger, every time I take the charger off it dies and will not come back on without resetting the device. Does anyone know what the issue might be, or is it just the battery is faulty?
    Post relates to: Tungsten E

Hello JLBimmer and welcome to the Palm forums.
Based on what I've seen, you have a bad battery in your device.  If you just purchased the device from a store, I would suggest that you take it back for a replacement unit.
If the Tungsten is "new to you" and you purchased it off of eBay or something like that, you can get your device repaired by PDAParts.com.

  • Battery not holding charge AFTER update

I have a macbook (early 2008) white which would hold approx. 4 hours of charge. Last week I saw an update for macbooks regarding battery issues and since it mentioned the model I had I downloaded that update. Since then a 100% charge allows me less than 2 hours (only about 1:45 worth of charge).
Please HELP! How can I revert to the original state and why has the update caused a fall in charge capacity? Thanks in advance. Details given below:
    Model Information:
    Serial Number: DP-ASMB016-38d2-c7a9
    Manufacturer: DP
    Device name: ASMB016
    Pack Lot Code: 0003
    PCB Lot Code: 0000
    Firmware Version: 0110
    Hardware Revision: 0500
    Cell Revision: 0102
    Charge Information:
    Charge remaining (mAh): 3533
    Fully charged: No
    Charging: No
    Full charge capacity (mAh): 3806
    Health Information:
    Cycle count: 596
    Condition: Fair
    Battery Installed: Yes
    Amperage (mA): -2485
    Voltage (mV): 11889
    Mac OS X 10.5.8 (9L31a)

    Full charge capacity (mAh): 3806
    Cycle count: 596
    Condition: Fair
While I cannot address why the problems may be manifesting after the update, the numbers above led me to believe your battery is on the way out. Your full capacity is about 75% of what it was new, and your cycle count is about double what Apple tends to warrant batteries for. "Fair" is also a clue that your battery is starting to wear out.
You can try resetting the SMC, but I'm guessing that you won't get much time back from a battery with these numbers:

  • IPod 3rd genneration battery not holding charge.  Can I replace battery?

I have been told that I can buy a newer generation iPod for the price of a replacement battery?  My current iPod has a personalised back cover (was a gift for my wife) so can I replace and ask for personalised cover?

Apple will exchange your iPod for a refurbished one for $79. They do not fix yours. The will redue the engraving but you have to sent the iPod in to Apple
Will the custom laser engraving on my iPod be preserved?
If your original iPod was personalized by Apple and you arrange service through Apple, you will be asked if you want your replacement iPod to be personalized with the same text. iPod personalization is not available in all countries or through the Express Replacement Service. If your original iPod was custom laser engraved by another company, your replacement iPod will not be personalized.

  • Iphone 5s battery not holding charge

I have been have problems with my Iphone5S battery life recently, I have followed the steps to save as much battery life as possible and I went to a genius bar as I thought the battery may be on its way out but they ran tests and told me its still a healthy battery, in the 90% mark and anything over 80% is good especially when I have had over 500 charges. They told me software errors and crashes have occurred a lot and to complete a fresh install of IOS which I'm hoping i factory settings, which I have just completed yesterday and so the software is completely new. I have found that the battery has already decreased by 10% in 20 minutes without hardly any use. Does anyone know whats causing this issue? thanks
