Ibook g4 black screen but startup sound

I have a 1.42Ghz 14" iBook that wont show anything on the screen.
When pressing the button the startup chime is audible but no picture(not even a dim one) is visible on the screen.
I used a vga adapter to connect a second display but still could not get a video signal.
Am suspecting the graphics chip but just wanted to hear around if anyone knows how to trouble shoot this..

Exerting pressure on the palm rest as Tom suggests should increase the pressure of the chip to the logic board and bring about better contact between the logic board and the chip, perhaps enough to make it work on either display. You can do a search of "logic board shim" on this forum and read about it and see where to exert pressure and how to make and install a shim.
It is worrisome that nothing shows up on the external display. If the problem is a bad display, a bad backlight, or a bad inverter cable, but the video chip itself is good, then you should get something on the external display. It's also possible that the chip itself is good, but the ball grid array (BGA) that holds it to the logic board has failed. If that is the case, exerting pressure in the right place will create better contact and the chip may work again.
A specialist can reball the logic board for about $75. However, if the chip itself has failed, reballing will not make it work again.
It is worrisome that both Target Disk Mode failed and the drive would not accept the AHT disc. It's possible that you could use an external drive, but there is still the problem of viewing the AHT results.
At this point, I think it would be worth working your way through the following article and see if any of the other suggestions in there would help, particularly the recommended resets:

Ok I checked and unchecked the playback via camera yesterday and I got black screen both times.
I could delete the imovie prefs when I go over there today.
I'll try another FW cable but it worked perfectly for importing but what the heck I've got one I'll try it.
Yes camera was set to play and not record.
Plenty of free space -- 131 GB.
I'm pretty sure it's in NTSC DV format, but it's someone else's computer so it could have been changed by someone screwin' around not knowing what they're doing making changes.

Curve 8520 black screen but have sound

I've had problems before with the white screen but then a few days ago my screen was black but I was getting sound land flashing light wen I receive n messages/ emails and rings when I get calls. When I pull the battery it comes back on and screen shows for 2minutes but none of the keys will work anow then it goes black again ! Can anyone help me please ?

But in most cases like 99% its either because of a weak Battery or if its a hardware issue like LCD screen.Or sometime even a bad apps can cause this problem.

IBook G4 black screen at startup with code in upper left hand corner

I have had operating system issues for the past year, and recently had my OS reinstalled at a Mac Professional retailer. After two weeks of perfect performance, the chime stopped working on startup. This was the only problem for several days. Then when I would put it to sleep, the computer would not automatically turn back on, I had to manually reboot it. Finally, today, after the computer would not wake up and I had restarted it, the screen would flash to the apple logo screen WITHOUT the spinning wheel and after several seconds would shift to an all black screen with text in the upper right hand corner, waiting for a command entry.
The code reads as follows:

Put the install disc in the drive and start while holding the "c" key. Once satrted click through past the language screen and select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Highlight the drive on the left and click the Repair button. If it reports errors and repairs repeat the process until no errors are reported. If it reports errors it can't repair post the error message here.

After an iPad update yesterday I sent a video and it is not viewable just black screen but sound is there. I sent it to my windows 7 laptop and there it is not viewable at all the start button appears crossed through.only works on apple PC

That one's consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive.

Windows 7 instructions in the following document: How to use CHKDSK (Check Disk)
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards?

Black screen and no sound with iTunes rentals.

I was going to chalk this up to just a corrupt download, but it's happening too much for mere coincidence now. I rented Captain America: The First Avenger in HD on my Windows 7 machine, only to find that when I tried to play it, I got nothing more than a black screen with no sound. I chalked it up to bad luck and went back to my day, only a few days later, I tried again, only to find the exact same problem had occurred with the exact same movie. I called Apple Support and told them of the problem, and while they refunded my purchases (and gave me 3 free movie rentals), they proposed no solution.
So I tried renting Iron Man 3 today, and the same thing happened. This doesn't occur with any other movies that I own trying to play in iTunes, just with rentals. I've already tried a reinstall, which did nothing, and I'm out of ideas.
Any assistance is appreciated.

Why do I get a black screen and no sound when playing video in iTunes 8?

Just downloaded the new iTunes. I don't have any video playback when I click preview in the store. No video when I try to play anything that I've already downloaded. The play cursor moves but I have a black screen with no sound. I'm hoping this is just a temporary glitch.
Any recommendations? I'm using the latest version of Leopard 10.5.4 on an Intel iMac.

Equium A100 black screen on startup

Toshiba Equium A100 laptop
Completely black screen on startup so please don't say go into safe mode etc, because I can't.
I can't see a thing.
Like once in every 100 goes it will come on and I can F12 to boot from the format disk but it eventually freezes before completion.

Look not good dude I think its an serious hardware issue
I checked the movie and cannot hear a beep when the notebook passes the POST (power on self-test). So for me it looks like something wrong with the hardware
But did you try to connect an external monitor in order to check if something would be visible on second screen? Check this
You could also try this:
Disconnect AC adaptor, remove the battery, wait some time (3-5 hours), then connect both parts and try to power up the notebook. If this fails, well in such case have no many other ideas. Ohhh wait maybe you could check the RAM modules. Try to power up the notebook using one module in each slot

Black screen on startup early 2008 macbook pro

I am very disappointed with Apple right now. My early-2008 15 inch macbook pro shows a blank/black screen on startup. The hd runs fine and I can dim and undim the backlight on the screen but it stays black/blank.
I talked to an Apple rep and she told me that it was probably my graphics card (which I asked her specifically about when I researched and found many other people like myself with the same issue and then the lawsuit that came as a result). Of course, Apple no longer replaces the graphics card (like a true business person would) as of December 2012 even though they know the cards in the macbooks pros are defective. The Apple rep told me that I would have to take it in to a Apple tech to get it "officially" diagnosed as the graphics card being bad (which would cost me @$150 just for it to be looked at!) and then I would probably still have to pay for the repair!
Of course this happened in the middle of the week while I was in the middle of working on a sermon and other presentation projects. So I had to do my best to try to work from scratch without access to the info on my hd because the graphics card is defective.
Apple, you know the card is defective so please just replace the card! I'm not asking for any perks or upgrades! Just to be able to use my Macbook Pro that, up until now, I have been bragging about and telling everyone how happy I was to switch over from windows!

Make sure all of the videos used in the project that is having that problem are from the same event. If they are from multiple events, move them all into one event.
