Ibook g4 - charger plug connectivity issue

My mother's iBook G4 is having a problem. When our dog chewed through the Apple brand charger cord, we opted to get a third party charger due to problems finding an Apple one (our computer store was out of them when we looked). Radioshack had a nice one called an iGo. It charged just as well as the Apple charger but the second problem was the same as the first. Dog chewed through the cord. Luckily we only had to buy a new cord for this iGo product (the added benefit of buying third-party). We were doing fine until suddenly the charger was not charging. Power was running through the power brick, but there was no connectivity going on. Turned out, that the plug piece was missing the small gold tip needed to connect to and charge the iBook. It had somehow become broken off. I think that the cord had been jerked out too many times.
Well we ordered a couple extra plugs (you can replace the actual plug without replacing the whole thing). When we put the new plug into the computer, I attempted to turn it on/wake it up, but it wouldn't. There's nothing wrong with either plug, but it's just not charging.
I've come to the conclusion that the gold tip broken off from the first plug is lodged inside of the computer's charging "port." It's tough to push the new plug into the hole, and it (before the tip break-off problem) was smooth going in, and slightly clicked into place.
My main question is if this is fixable. It's her computer, and, as a result of it being "out of commission," she's been using mine. Not very convenient for either of us.
I appreciate any responses.

iMac G4 17", Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I'd rather pay the $60 and not void the warranty/screw up the computer!
The problem is that it's very hard to see exactly what's inside of the input. If you can imagine with me, for a moment, the inside of the input:
On the inner circular wall of the power input (where the male tip is pushed), it appears that there are two brass pieces. They are both on opposite sides of the wall. I believe that the brass pieces are folded to form a loop against the side that hold the male piece's tip in place. The problem is that one of these brass pieces appears to be bent out of shape. I cannot tell if the tip of that plug that broke is inside of the input, but I do know that when I push a fresh plug (male end) into the input (female end), it feels as though the plug tip catches something before being able to be pushed completely in. I THINK that it may be this brass piece that is bent out of shape.
I am not at all learned in the "innards" of technology but I'm simply "putting it out there."
I think I may just take the laptop up to a professional to get it fixed, but I still would appreciate more answers to my question, as it may be of future benefit to me.
Thanks
-Alex

  • G3 iBook having dial-up connection issues

    iBook 500MHz G3 running 10.3.9
My Dad's computer is acting very, very strange. He's got a dial-up with connection, which is admittedly slow. This affects both Safari & Firefox when he's browsing the 'net. Lately (past few months, off and on) it's been SLOW AS DRUGGED SNAILS. It will sometimes take 5 or 10 minutes to load a page, sometimes resulting in a "loaded x of y items, z errors" kind of thing in both Safari & Firefox. The computer is otherwise normal for other computing tasks. I have tried connecting from my house and also, it appeared normal (that day).
Maybe a month ago I ran disk repair/permissions and a once around on the extended hardware test and came up with nothing obvious. I'm running a loop hardware test right now and will let it loop for a good long while, maybe 5 or 6 hours. So far, no errors after nearly 15 loops.
In the meantime, I've been poking in the logs. I did some Googling, but it was mostly unhelpful (whether or not it was my query set, I don't know). But, does anyone have any idea what this is: "May 29 19:23:44 localhost kernel: 0 0 AppleUSBCDCECMData: probe - provider doesn't want us to match"? Would that be an error in the iBook's OS X software or his dial-up provider refusing to connect (as usual they are clueless on the Mac front and blame any and all problems on the Mac)?
As a last resort, and I do mean last resort, I could zero out the drive and reinstall Panther. I'd rather figure out what is wrong so if it a) pops up again I know what it is and can address it and b) don't want to do the reinstall dance if I don't have to.
Log from the other day. Similar as yesterday and others.
    Any insight is appreciated.

It was doing a lot of things a lot, things I wouldn't expect it to be doing.
As it turned out, I did format and reinstall Panther for him. We tested it here and it behaved as expected (for dial-up). All was right with the world until he got back to his house.
Same as before. I told him to call the provider and tell them that a) the iBook has a fresh install and was updated to include all current software for Panther and b) he had none of this at my house. That, in fact, I surfed on it for a whole morning and didn't experience any of the issues he did.
    The situation stands like this:
provider is having one of their engineers look at the issue (slow w/disconnects)
he is to call his local telephone company and ask them to conduct a line test for noise.
In the meantime, I'm scouting around for a compatible wireless card that won't cost us an arm and a leg and pushing for him to go to the cable company for access.

  • Smart Plug Connection Issues when adding to your system.

I just got my new smart plugs in the mail, and there was an issue setting them up. The pairing was not happening. We tried for a good 20 mins following the instruction for pairing the devices. I got them to finally pair when instead of doing a 2-3 second button press i switched to a double tap quick press. The devices were dicovered right away. Looks like the instruction for the devices dont seem to match up with what the support is told to do to pair those smart plugs. I wanted to share so you guys could look into this as the rep that helped me today said these are always tricky for them to get connected.  Recap Doing 2-3 second delayed button presses did not work. Doing 2 quick presses of the button made the smart plug start clicking. I could hear it turning on and off.

I don't want to create another user in the business system for this purpose, does anybody

  • IBook G3 & netgear DG834G - Connection issues

    Hi,
I have a G3 iBook running OSX 10.3.9 and it has an airport card installed. The card is picking up my network OK, when I click on the network to connect to it it's asking for my WEP password, which I input however it comes up with "There was an error connecting to the Airport Network RMY"... I've installed all the updates I can find, I've looked on netgear's website (about was useful as a chocolate fire guard) and I'm at a loss as to how to solve this. Help please!! :P
    Thanks in advance

solved. Needed to change router security to WEP hex

  • IBook Does not reliably connect to charger

My iBook G4 has problems recognizing that it is connected to the charger. It does not think it is connected and the battery will not charge. With much fidgeting however it will work and charge. I am not sure if this is a software or hardware problem. My best solution right now is to reinstall the OS, currently I am also having a problem printing and think that perhaps a reinstall will fix this. If it is a hardware problem I will probably take it to a local Apple store and try and get it fixed. I have tried cleaning both connections and this did not help.
Thanks a bunch for your time
    -Clay Harding

I'm having the same problem with a brand new charger.
There is no visible damage anywhere and I feel that the cord itself is faulty, as I often have to carefully adjust it, sometimes taking up to an hour.
I'm replacing mine, as I have no spare charger to check with. If that doesn't solve my problem then I'll have to admit there is some damage directly inside the female receptacle and look to take it for repair. (My warranty has long expired and I am not near any Apple store or repair person).
If you don't have another charger plug available to you, like me, and you still are covered, call Apple. They'll provide you with a new wall charger plug as long as their is no physical damage to the plus (bent pin, broken pin, etc.).

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts   Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.

  • Extreme charging and syncing issues

Okay, so for the past few weeks I've been developing charging and syncing issues. The first third party usb cable worked for a while and after some point it begin to physically wear and tear, and wires were disconnecting. Needed a new charger, so naturally I went and got another one. However, it didn't work, and as a measure to see if it was faulty, I plugged in the old one and smelt smoke/a burn smell.
So, I plugged the new charger into an old ipod touch 2G and it charges and syncs just dandy. The 3GS is a particularly weird case here; as it will not charge while on. After letting it die, I plugged it in and got an empty battery indicator with a charging (lightning) symbol, and after a couple of minutes it powered back on, but still wasn't charging once ios actually booted up. Weird, right? If I could connect to windows I could restore it to remove the jailbreak, as using Erase All Content and Settings keeps the phone in an endless loop until I hard reset.
The kicker here is that it seems to only charge when it's off, as if its plugged in and you slide to power off, and turn it back on later, it will sometimes have a higher percentage. And, at the place I work, we have many iPads so I plugged it up to the iPad chargers and it worked with some of them, albeit slower then expected.
Is my phone not getting enough voltage or something of the nature? I have 3 wall adaptors, one apple, and two of them standard LG adaptors, and a third party usb cable that notably works for the iPod just fine. I've connected it to 3 different computers with itunes and the result was the same as if it was dead and plugged into the wall; enough power to boot to home screen then die afterwards.
The thing that get's me is when I hit Erase All Content and Settings and it's plugged, it makes a charging noise indication but only when I hit that reset button. If it wasn't for that, I would beleive it was a hardware issue. That, or I'm just trying to deny the phone's inevitable fate. I needed a reason to switch to the 4s, so maybe this is it. I don't like giving on on something without fixing it though so it's gonna bother me until I do.
Thanks for any suggestions or help!

  • IChat video connection issue, not related to router

I received a brand new 20" iMac Core 2 Duo just yesterday and intended to use iChat AV to video conference with my girlfriend, who has a 12" iBook G4 1.2GHz with an iSight and all system software up-to-date.
We both have DSL connections at home. We also both have wireless routers. The very first time we tried a video conference, it worked perfectly without a hiccup and everything just looked and sounded wonderful. At the time, she was connected wirelessly and I was connected both wirelessly and through Ethernet to my router's local network.
The second time we tried it (only a few hours later), seemingly without having changed any settings, it failed to work, and hasn't worked since. At first, we would get Error -22, saying something about how bandwidth is insufficient to maintain a video conference. However, I do not believe bandwidth is the real issue since all other network/internet tasks on both ends are spiffy as usual. We also both tried turning off Airport and just connecting through Ethernet to our routers' local network. Same problem.
To then determine if the problem was with one our routers, we both set them aside and plugged our DSL modems directly into our computers and connected to the internet with PPPoE. This appears to partially fix the problem: we are able to initiate a video conference, we both have audio, I can see her, but she can't see me; sort of a one-sided conference. On my screen, the image of myself freezes as soon as the conference is initiated. So unless I'm missing something, the ultimate cause of this problem doesn't appear to be the routers.
You can bet I tried a bunch of the common tips mentioned in this discussion forum before posting this question, such as changing the iChat port in the preferences, turning off Firewalls in the Sharing preferences and changing Quicktime streaming speed.
In summary, it worked once and hasn't worked since, and routers do not appear to be the cause of the issue. Does anyone have any further advice for me? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

First off I want to thank James for his willingness to help me test connections today. James has suggested I check into upping my Mother's connection. I will definitely look into that.
I wanted to update the thread that I tried the three test accounts at Apple (appleu3test01-3) and had success from all three on my home computer via my wireless configuration no less. This is what stumps me about my connection issues with my Mother - we can both connect to others but between us we get error -8's since iChat 3. I also find it odd that this is happening even though we are both Earthlink customers - I would chalk it up to routing tables or something if we were on different ISP's.

  • Satellite P50t-A won't power on without AC Charger plugged in

    Hi there,
I'm having an issue with the power on my P50t-A.
    History...
For a while, I was getting less and less time out of the battery, until eventually one night it reached 0% with the AC charger plugged in, and windows telling me it "plugged-in" and "charging". It never increased from 0%, and would shut itself down.
Given this history, I figured the battery had finally died.
I ordered a new battery, opened up the laptop and replaced the old battery with the new one. I assumed at this point it was a no-brainer.
I plugged the laptop back into the AC Charger, and without turning it on, let it charge up for the firs time. After several hours I noticed that the charge light remained red (as opposed to white - charged). I decided to turn the machine on to see where the charge was upto; 75%. Windows says "plugged-in" and "charging". I thought fine, I'll turn it off and let it go a bit longer.
Came back a couple hours later to find the charge light still red. Turned on the machine to check the charge status - guess what - 75%.
I shut the machine down, unplugged the AC charger, and hit the 'on' button... NOTHING.
Opened up the machine, confirmed the battery connectors are plugged in - all seems OK.
Did plenty of forum searching, some posts said upgrade the BIOS, so I did that - now has the latest (at the time, 1.9). No change.
Tried various other updates with the Service Center application, nothing.
Found something referring to uninstalling and re-installing a microsoft battery device driver (I didn't see what something in the OS would have to do with it, since the issue begins before boot, but I thought heck - I'm running out of things to try - I'll give it a go) - no change.
Eventually landed on a post refering to this Toshiba post, talking about a battery reset button:
    http://support.toshiba.com/support/v...tentId=4004523
Tried the battery reset button, with both the AC charger connected and disconnected. No luck.
I'm now at a loss, and worried something is wrong with the motherboard.
It's almost as if the laptop recognises the battery is there, but can't (or won't) send or draw power from it.
Anyone seen this before, or know of a solution?
    Many thanks.

I'm now at a loss, and worried something is wrong with the motherboard.
I’m afraid you could be right…
Usually the DC IN / Battery indicator will glow amber while the battery is being charged.
In case the notebook is OFF the battery should be fully charged after about 3 hours… if the notebook is ON, the charging time would be a little bit longer… after about 6 hours the battery should be fully charged.
In such case the Dc IN / Battery indicator should switch the status to “white”. This would indicate that the battery is fully charged…
New batteries need to be calibrated to reach the best performance…
Calibrating means that the battery should be discharged until its fully empty and then charged again till the DC IN/battery indicator would glow white.
This process should be repeated two, three times until the battery recovers normal capacity.
As mentioned, the DC IN / Battery indicator should glow amber to indicate that the battery pack is being charged. However if the LED does not glow, this indicates that power is not being supplied correctly.

  • HotSync connection issue with Palm Treo 800w Sprint work around Solved !!!

I just switched from my Treo Palm Treo 755p to the The Palm Treo  800w. For the life of me I couldn't figure out why though everything was connected via USB. The Microsoft ActiveSync would work once or twice then nothing . Though I knew it was connected the charge wouldn't work either.
Here is my work around and it never fails.
If you see the Red light or Green light on your phone while connected Via the USB that means you are connected you can sync and charge.
If you don't see the red/green light on or see the phone in My computer > Mobile devices.
Plug your phone in via the USB. While it's plugged in take the battery out . Then put the battery back in. You know you are good when you see the red light or green light  turn on. Red light means charging Green light means its fully charged.
I have connected every time using the take out the battery method and my Treo 800w charges / Microsoft syncs the works!!
Hope this helps I tried everything before I figured this out.

Did you install the 800W update that is available on the support page under downloads? There is a download for the charging issue and the USB connection issue.

  • Ipod wont charge when connected by USB

My ipod doesn't charge when i connect via USB but will charge on Firewire..?? is this normal??

My ipod doesn't charge when i connect via USB but
will charge on Firewire..?? is this normal??
I assume that you are referring to the ipod being plugged into your Mac when charging. The Mac cannot be in "sleep" mode if you want to charge the ipod by plugging into USB. However the Mac can be in "sleep" if you plug into the Firewire port. The reason is that the FireWire port is powered while the USB is not when the Mac is asleep.
BTW you can charge via the USB 1 and not just USB 2. I have a 4G ipod that will charge when connect to my older iBook (2002 model) that only has USB 1.

  • N97 usb connectivity issues

    Hi,
I've had my N97 for about a week now and am having some serious USB connectivity issues with the phone in that when I connect to my PC, on the first occasion it will recongnise the USB connection, but if it gets disconnected it subsequently won't reconnect.  This means I am unable to install the latest version of the firmware which appears to address some USB issues.  I've tried both version 1 and the beta 2 Ovi suite.
    Any ideas??
    Thanks,
    Trev

    Hi!
Me and my friend at work got the same STUPID problem. We unpacked our phones, connected them and upgraded FW and got everything setup (mail, music etc.)
Now I got back to work and thought that it was no problem plugging in my phone and update it with some new music and contacts...well was I wrong...the stupid 7000 SEK phone won't even take the electricity and charge...I get no connection to the PC...it worked fine 2 days ago...
So I try to install the stuff on the CD again, no luck....I tell Windows to add new hardware, nowhere on the Internet and nowhere on the CD are there drivers to be found...
So here I am with a million dollar phone I can't connect to my PC...what the hell is this???
Looking in this thread and seeing the answers I should not hold my breath waiting for this to be fixed...but my question is: Will I have to wait for a FW update for this phone to connect to my PC?
    Regards
