  • IBook G4 Combo Drive Does Not Read CD's - But Reads DVD's

Since about a week ago, my combo drive has not been able to read any audio or data CD's. However, it remains able to read and play DVD's. When I insert a CD into the drive, it would either automatically eject itself, or remain in the drive without being recognized by the system. After inserting a CD, I can hear the drive making noises indicating that it's trying to read the disk.
If anyone has encountered this problem, how can it be resolved?
    Thanks.

I had 8 CD-RW disks backing up iTunes and wanted to update them so I erased them to start over. Afterwards when I tried to use them each and every one was useless-my iBook was telling me they were unreadable. I Googled this problem for quite some time without finding a solution. People were actually replacing their optical drives. Anyway I found my own solution, figuring that the combo-drive was ok since it was reading all my DVDs and other CD-RWs. I opened BurnX, popped in the unreadable CD, but before the warning box came up I clicked on erase to erase the already erased CD. This prevented the warning box from coming up and the CD ejecting. Next I burned a small file onto the CD-just any old file-actually a short TextEdit document, then I erased that. Also I made sure that the CD was not apendable. It worked! I then did the same with all the other CDs that were unreadable after having erased the iTunes backup from them and was ready. I began the backup procedure and was afraid that it was going to tell me what I had forgotten to mention earlier, that the disk was not blank when I knew it was, but it didn't and they all worked fine. The backup was a success and I had found the answer to a problem that apparently many people have had over the years. Hope this helps.

  • IBook G4 Combo drive does not read

My brother has an iBook G4 with a Combo Drive and I just need to know if there is any way I can clean it or just check to see if it is bad. I need to know if I have to replace it or what. Are there any steps I can take before I replace?

There are a couple of things to try:
First, open Disk Utility (in the Applications folder) and click on the hard drive by brand name and then on the first aid tab. Verify permissions and repair if necessary. Repair until there is nothing left to repair. Sometimes permissions get messed up and cause problems.
I believe you can try cleaning the drive with one of the kits specially made for cleaning optical drives.
Also, try a variety of discs--see if the problem is with all of them or just some of them.
    Good luck!

  • IBook G4 Combo Drive Not Recognized / Freezes

    Hello all,
    I have a problem with my iBook G4 1.25ghz
I have erased and reinstalled the OSX do to a hdd error, something about the tree. I dont remember now.
It will intermittently freeze during boot, if I hit the case above the hdd it will unfreeze and continue loading. When the OSX loads (10.4.11) again will intermittently freeze (hit the case and it comes back to life)
It doesn't recognize the combo drive, I therefore cannot do a disc repair from Tigers OSX disc, nor can I load tech tools.
Tried re-seating the Ram, resetting everything PRAM, PMU, NVRAM and countless other suggestions that I have read.
Im kinda hoping its just a hdd and can replace that. Before I tear this thing down anyone have any suggestions? The combo drive not being recognized is throwing me for a loop.
    Thanks

Sound like there is directory damage. Try DiskWarrior

The Disk Utility app that comes with the Mac OS is cannot repair that type of error. That is directory damage. You need DiskWarrior.

  • Ibook g3 combo drive not working

I have a 500 mhz  Ibook G3  with a non working combo drive. I went and replaced it with a new combo drive. The new combo drive didn't work either, so I dug deeper. When I checked out the "about this Mac" drop down , I saw that the combo drive doesn't appear at all. I also cannot eject/open the CD drawer. If I manually open the drive I can't get a disc to play or even spin. So I an assuming that it is a power to the drive issue. Any ideas? Do I need a new ribbon cable or is it a software thing? I'm running 10.4.11.
    Thanks
    Tom

You may have gotten another drive that was faulty.
I don't think it's the cable because the iBook G3 uses a single cable for the hard drive and the optical drive, using a Master/Slave configuration. So if your hard drive is working, the optical drive should work, too, unless it's not connected properly.
Did you use iFixit's guide to install it?
It sounds like hardware, not software.

  • IBook G3 Combo Drive Issue

I picked up a used iBook G3 600, with Combo drive, and it works OK, however the Combo Drive does not eject. It can be done manually, and some sort of beep eminates from the computer when trying to either eject the drive, or if you eject it manually. Is this beep some sort of failure signal, does it merely mean that the drive has failed in some way and probably needs to be replaced? If you've seen this behavior and can provide some details, that would be great. When you get discs in it, seems to work OK.. Thanks for any feedback...

Hi, Norm. Welcome to Apple Discussions.
It is my guess (and that's all that it is, so don't automatically assume I'm correct) that maybe there is a mounting screw missing from the drive assembly.
If the drive had truly failed, it wouldn't be working for you. But it may be encountering a physical problem which inhibits its eject mechanism. The instructions for reinstalling an optical drive can be found here:
    http://www.pbfixit.com/Guide/50.15.0.html
It's not a procedure for the faint-hearted. But I'm afraid if you continue to use it the way it is, the problem may turn into a total failure of the drive.
    Where do you live?
DT & T Computer Services in Fremont, California offer free diagnostics, and if all it requires is a mounting screw, I'm sure they would be very reasonable.
If you're on the other Coast, Small Dog Electronics in Waitsfield, Vermont come highly recommended.
    Good luck.

  • !!!!! My iBook's Combo Drive has Died!!!?? Please help!

Ok, 2 days ago i bought a working G3 14" iBook from someone on gumtree. It would read disks fine. It was on 10.1 (*****) so i borrowed the eMac disks from neighbour.
Since the laptop did not come with its disks and i wanted to upgrade (i have the disks, but they are not with me in the next month), so i downloaded them.
I spent all of yesterday trying to burn these CD's to no avail. I go to the laptop this morning, and now it doesnt even spin up any disks.
Please help me! I tried plugging in my external also, and disk copy will only try to burn to the internal drive.
    Thanks.

After reading i can see that i wasnt very clear in the first post.
I recieved the iBook. It had 10.1. I went next door to the neighbour i knew had an eMac. I wanted anything other than 10.1 for the time being so i got her 10.2 eMac restore disks and installed them.
Im wanting to get tiger on it, but i am away from home just now where my retail 10.4 disks are so i proceeded to download 10.4 from the internet.
I now cannot try to burn the disks to see if upgrading to a retail 10.4 will work. I only have the external USB burner.

  • IBook G3 Combo Drive ejects on startup, restart, or wake from sleep

I have a 12" iBook G3 600 that automatically ejects the CD tray everytime it's started up, restarted, or woken from sleep.
It happens whether there is a disc in the drive or not. It's really just bothersome, since I can just push the drive back in, but it doesn't always "stick".
Why is it automatically ejecting? I've reset NVRAM, zapped PRAM, done a clean install of Tiger... everything I can think of.

As I said, it's really only a nuisance. The reason I am asking, is because I am right in the middle of replacing the hard drive (since it went bad), and fixing the hood latch on the front, which broke.
I have the whole thing taken apart, sitting on my desk, with a new hard drive coming on Monday (I wanted to see really how hard it was to take apart, which really wasn't bad... I had the fried drive out in less than 30 minutes.)
Since I am replacing the hard drive, it won't have any OS. I hadn't planned on installed OS 9, but I will offer this point: when attempting to salvage the files from the bad drive, I tried booting into OS 9 from an external Firewire drive, and it still popped out. It happens way before any OS software begins to run. It's almost instantaneous once I hit the power key, or wake it from sleep.
So, if it's a hardware issue, what is really causing it. The logic board or the drive itself? Like I said, I'm sitting here with it totally broken down, and I'm wondering if replacing the drive will fix it.
I'm just wondering why it's kicking it out. Does it think there is something in there that needs to get out? It's almost like the mouse button is being held down on startup (though there is no mouse) and it happens WAY before the way that method usually works (as compared to my iBook G4).

  • Combo drive won't accept CDs or CD-R/CD-RWs

my iBook's combo drive suddenly would not accept CDs, CD-Rs, CD-RWs. it can't recognize the disk and automatically spits them out. it can't burn CD-Rs as well. it can only read DVD, DVD-Rs. why is this so?
is apple planning on solving this problem? and compensatin for those who have purchased the defective combo drives? any suggestions on what to do to solve the problem?
    thanks.

  • The combo drive can read double-layer DVD?

I own an iBook G4 (Late 2004) with a combo drive. Can I use the combo drive to install Leopard? I have know the install discs of Leopard is double-layer DVD.

Hari, Welcome to the discussion area!
There is no special DVD drive required. Your iBook's combo drive will be able to read the Leopard disc.

  • Fixing dead combo drive

My iBook G4 combo drive made a horrible roaring noise, ejected the DVD and then went dead. Inserting disks (DVD or CD) would cause it to immediately eject the disk, and the motor wasn't starting up.
I figured a hardware problem, but went through the applicable troubleshooting steps (reset PMU and PRAM), no go.
Then, on a whim, I put in a regular DVD movie while holding down the "C" key, and it spun back to life.
I'm not sure why that worked -- normally I use the C key to force it to boot from DVD -- but it did.
An odd thing that's worth a shot if you're having combo drive trouble.

Ok somethings probally stuck even tho it workes fine there can still be something stuck so you'll have to get in and take a look at it.
For more info on how to do this go to http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/84.16.1.html fallow all the steps and it will get you to there. It'll say to replace it but just get to it and look at it. That website just takes you threw steps to replace something.

  • Wife's iBook G4, original combo drive, now getting the 70012 code

Hi, first time ever posting on Apple discussions.
Long story short, kids dropped my wife's iBook G4 the other week, I just replaced the entire monitor, no problems (thanks to instructions at iFixit!). Its a iBook G4, 12 inch, 1GHZ. Anyway, a few days afterwards I decided to see if the CD / DVD combo drive worked..... and it didnt. DVD player is not working and am getting the infamous 70012 error code. This is the original internal combo drive that came with the iBook and never have had an issue before now. She doesnt use it much but. Wondering if I didnt something wrong during the monitor swap or if it was damaged during the dropping incident. Any help / advise would be greatly appreciated!!!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Can you see the drive in the System Profiler? (>About this Mac>More Info>Hardware. Check under both "ATA" and "Disc Burning".
If you don't see it at all, it may be that the cable was dislodged from the logic board when it was dropped or while it was apart. If this is the case, try reseating the cable.
    Good luck!

  • Upgraded Hard Drive, now Combo drive wont recognize. HELP!!!!

I upgraded my hard drive, installed the os-X (10.3.9 i think) and the cd combo worked fine, removed the combo to do somthing for the laptop (installed it in the iBook), and now when I put another combo drive (same model different drive) into the mini, the mini doesn't even recognize that there is a drive at all,
it will take a disk, but wont eject or mount.
    what should I do?
should I put the original drive into the mini?
Also, i cant re-install OS-x because the optical drive wont mount in the mini, and the ibook says that It cannont use the software with the version that is installed on it (10.4.somthing)

There isn't a BIOS in G4 Mac systems - in essence, rather than having a pre-determined configuration, the system checks for existent components at startup such that if the drive in the system was recognised and had a viable driver, it would be functional.
First thing to do is check whether the system sees the drive at all. Go to the Apple menu and select 'About this Mac'. Then click the 'More info' button when the dialog box gives the MacOS version, processor and memory.
The click the 'ATA' tab on the left. You should see two entries - the first being the internal hard drive which will be shown in the lower portion of the right-hand pane by model and capacity. If the combo drive is not showing there with any entry (ie, there is only one ATA device, the internal HD) then more than likely the drive is not connected correctly as Boece has suggested. If it IS listed there and correct by model number, then it may be that the drive itself is faulty or the system's power management unit isn't controlling it correctly.
If the later is the case, a PMU reset may help. Try the following:
    - Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord.
    - Wait 10 seconds.
    - Plug in the power cord while simultaneously pressing and holding the power button on the back of the computer.
    - Let go of the power button.
    - Press the power button once more to start up your Mac mini.

  • Ibook G4 won't recognise Combo drive

    Hi there
I have an iBook G4 12" 800Mhz , when I bought it off ebay it arrived with an issue - the computer doesnt see the combo drive, dvds don't mount, Apple dvd player app gives an error message saying it kind find the drive to play dvds.
I have since taken the ibook apart and tried another combo drive and super drive but with the same results, I thought it could be the flex cable so tried that but again same result. I'm really confused now, am I missing something? do I need to reset Vram etc ? could there be a problem with the logic board?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I'm stumped
    Troy

    Hey,
I have had the same problem with three iBook G4's. It is not hardware, it is your software. Some how when you download a font or such off of the internet it interferes with a setting on your computer that has to be reset. But I do not know how to change the setting back to recognize DVD's except to backup up you hard drive and reinstall your panther or tiger software. This is what I have done and it fixes the drive, and you are able to play DVD's again.
