Ibook g4: disturbing behavior in sleep mode

Problem is the following one:
ibook g4 800 goes into sleep mode after a period of inactivity as it is said to do. Then after a while the display goes into action and some picture fragment apear on screen. The light on the front continues pulsing. After some time the battery is empty..
Does anybody know this problem?
thanks for any help. peter

Have you tried running the Apple Hardware Test on your dvd(s) that came with your ibook?

  • Ibook won't wake from sleep mode

I have an ibook G4. I have a slid show for a screen saver, and the display is set to sleep when the computer is inactive for 15 minutes. Recently the computer does not wake from sleep. It is stuck on a screen saver picture, and does not wake up when i press a key. The only way to access the computer is to shut it down by pressing the Start button.
I have tried to remove the slide show, but no difference.

I would suggest resetting the PMU. Since the PMU has control over sleeping and waking, resetting it may help.
Every time you have to do a forced shutdown (by pushing the start button) instead of a normal one, there is a chance of hard drive damage and you should repair the hard drive, either by booting into Safe Mode or starting up from the Mac OS X Install Disc by inserting the disc and restarting your computer, holding down the C key at the end of the startup chime. Then choose Installer > Open Disk Utility (in Panther) or Utilities > Disk Utility (in Tiger) and select the hard drive in the left column. Choose the First Aid tab. Click Repair Disk to test and repair the hard drive. Once you have repaired the hard drive with either Safe Mode or the Install disc's Disk Utility, then start up normally and repair permissions from Disk Utility in the Utilities folder on your hard drive.
For future reference, you may want to try posting in the iBook G4 Forum with questions.

  • Imac running slow after sleep mode

not sure what's going on but i can't use sleep mode on my imac 2010 sl
whenever it wakes from sleep mode it is so slow, even typing an email i'll get the flywheel coming up and a delay in the words i'm typing. every application is slow, i have to a restart for it to start working normally again.
my wife has the same problem with her macbook pro of similar vintage and os.
anyone else have this problem and know a solution?

I too have been noticing problems in slow behavior after sleep mode.  It has gotten so bad I have been restarting it regularly or shutting down much more regularly.  It behaves almost like normal after a re-start.
It is almost like the hard drive is failing? Last time this happened I put a new HD in.  I am usually running a large number of different programs, always multi-tasking, which has been a mac fortie. Seems worse with the last few updates.  My I mac is 24" imac 2008 model. replaced drive just before apple care expired.

My MBP runs extremely slow after sleep mode (closing lid). It seems like Safari will take up much RAM. But I use a memory freer which supposedly should solve the problem. So after all I am not sure what is the real cause and what could solve this.
BTW it runs normally after a reboot.
Mine is a mbp 13" refurb purchased in March, 2012.

  • Ibook won't wake up or crashes after waking from sleep mode

I have now had this problem for the last year with my new ibook g4 and I can confirm that the problem is present at OS X version 10.3.0 - 10.3.9 and 10.4.0-10.4.5 . I'd manage to solve it but once in a while it shows up again and i have to solve it all over again. Apple doesn't seem to care although it makes your iBook totally unusable if you can't put it to sleep mode, because of the fact that you can't leave your iBook ON while the lid is closed. Ok as I said I have this problem once in a while but I allways manages to solve it, here are my observations:
Leting the computer go into sleep mode by itself (not by closing the lid) will not result in a crash.
Before a crash the following allways occour:
    1) The system gets highly unstable. Programs (mostly safari, mail and itunes) will crash without warning. The mouse reacts very slowly and lags behind. The mouse lag is a shure indication that the system will crash during the next seconds or minuts.
    2) While set to automaticly connect to favorite network, the airport won't connect imidiatly, but it will take a few seconds more than usual before it connects.
    3) The system sometimes crashes before it can activate the backlight resulting in the situation where people think that the system can't wake up from sleep mode and won't react.
Only forcing the computer to sleep mode can cause this failure (by pressing "sleep mode" or by closing the lid).
What i did to rule out some sources resulting in this error:
    1) Something like this problem can happen when having a bad memory socket or bad memory, so I'd ran Apples Hardware test and memtest OSX, but no failure was indicated.
    2) Ran the usual repair of disk permissions (like 10^6 times ), without any changes.
    3) Tried to reset the PMU (Power managing unit), without any changes.
    4) Also tried to make a clean installation with panther 10.3 and tiger 10.4, without changes. Before installing anything (no prgrams or updates) the system still crashes. Even after updating to. 10.3.9 and 10.4.5 the problem is still present
    The solution:
Well I found out that the problem has to do with to power options. That would normally mean that reseting the PMU would help, but as I already said this didn't change anything. Apparently the system is not able to wake up the Harddisk from sleep mode, and that's basicly the problem. I don't understand why it doesn't crash when going to sleep mode all by itself, but aparently there's something diffrent by forcing the system to sleep mode. Fourthermore it's not so "happy" to change those settings for the harddisk (I will explain later).
    Solution:
    1) Basicly just UNCHECK the option "Set harddisk to sleep mode whenever it's possible" inside powermanagment. And set "let the computer go to sleep after" to "Never" , do this for Battery and AC Power settings.
    2) And put CPU usage to "Automatic", do this for Battery and AC Power settings
    3) Restart the ibook. When it plays it's startup sound reset PVRAM by holding the following keys down before the backlight turns ON: OptionCommand+PR , when you hear the startup sound again release the buttons and start OSX normally.
Now as I said this problems comes once in a while and that has to do with the fact that repairing my disk permissions can change/reset the above changes. Even if it isn't beeing displayed graphicly repairing the disk permission have reseted those changes, resulting in the fact that the system is crashing again.
So to solve this do the following for Battery and AC power settings:
    1) CHECK/MARK the "Set harddisk to sleep mode whenever it's possible" inside powermanagment and put CPU usage option the low or high. And set "let the computer go to sleep after" to "Never"
    2) Restart the ibook.
    3) UNCHECK the option "Set harddisk to sleep mode whenever it's possible" inside powermanagment". Put CPU usage option back to "Automatic". And set "let the computer go to sleep after" to "Never"
    4) Restart the ibook again. When it plays it's startup sound reset PVRAM by holding the following keys down before the backlight turns ON: OptionCommand+PR , when you hear the startup sound again release the buttons and start OSX normally.
So now it doesn't crash again.
I've read all the threads of people having this problem and apparently it has been present since OSX 10.0.0 and when calling apple support they tell you to reset PMU and repair the usual disk permissions, which of cause doesn' work. And there are aparently a lot of really angree costumers, because this problem makes the computer COMPLETLY unusable, but apple has done nothing to help those people because of the the fact there there has been released ZERO patches or changes in OSX to resolve this issue. I can't say that there is something wrong with the iBooks as the several hardware test's indicate no malfunctioning but there is some bug in Mac OSX wich specificly makes the system incable to tell some ibook's how to wake the harddisk from sleep mode.
To the fine folks working on this forum: No I will not send this to apple, they already know about this, and have done nothing (just think of the millions of crash reports they recieve from those hundreds of crashes everybody is geting from this problem). That is why I put this on the forum so that people can actually solve this problem by themselves. If you think it's worth sending to apple, so that this problem can finally be fixed after 4-5 years you are more than welcome to send it directly to somebody who will actually do something about this. And i really hope that giving people the opportunity to make ther computer work, doesn't violated the usual rule "that we are not allowed to write anything that is agains apples interests", wich often results in a removal of threads and ANY chance in SOLVING critical errors.

Your observations and solution are right on the money!!
I just was working on an iBook that my father is giving to my sister. I must have started the problem by changing the sleep setting for battery to let HD sleep. After that the fun began! Instability, restart after restart, running Disk Warrior, fixing permissions over and over, etc. I finally zeroed out the HD and installed 10.4. Nothing worked until I read your post.
Thanks a lot. I understand how you feel about posting here, but please be aware that you are helping many people who would be completely without a clue otherwise. Thanks again for your efforts.
Now I can ship my sister her iBook!

  • Charging peripherals while iBook in Sleep Mode or Shut Down (Hot USB Ports)

I would like to be able to charge my iPhone or iPhone while connected to the iBook. However I would prefer the charging method to work in "Sleep Mode" or when the computer is shut down, still plugged into a wall outlet. Has anyone had any success with finding an after-market provider or a solution to get "Hot USB" ports installed on the iBook G4's? I heard in passing this feature would be available soon on the newer Apple notebooks but have yet to see it.

This isn't something I'd noticed before, but my goodness, you're right!
I'm certain I was able to charge my third gen iPod while it was plugged into my sleeping iBook, as long as the iBook was also connected to an outlet.
My MacBook, while sleeping, will charge a device regardless of if it's connected to the outlet or not.
What OS is your iBook running? Maybe that's a clue to solving this issue.

  • Bizarre app behavior after waking from Sleep Mode

My iMac Core Duo runs like a top. It is fast and quiet. I have no problems with applications, both Universal and PowerPC. I maintain it with everything that I suggest others do in posts.
But, there is this one strange quirkiness that I have put off mentioning because I kept hoping that each new OS X update would address the issue. It has to do with waking my Mac from sleep mode with it logged into my user account. Not every time, but most of the time, if I put my Mac to sleep or it goes to sleep from inactivity while it is logged into my user account, I experience strange application behaviors upon waking.
For example, upon awaking Mail.app will contact my .Mac account and download any new mail that has arrived. But, if I try to open any of this mail, instead of opening, Mail.app will open a new outgoing email addressed to whomever sent me the mail I tried to open. Quitting and restarting does not solve this problem. Other apps demonstrate similar bizarre behavior. To only way to solve the issue is to log out and back into my user account.
However, if I log out of my user account and then put the Mac to sleep from the Login Manager I don't experience this issue. So at night I always log out before putting the Mac to sleep.
Anyone else experiencing similar issues? Any ideas on solving this? Do you think it is a bug in Universal Mac OS X?

Sorry this isn't a solution, rather is a commiseration. Often after my iMac wakes from sleep mode it refuses to see my internet connection. I have to unplug and reset my DSL modem to force the computer to see that it exists.
It sounds like the problem might be related, does anyone have any brilliant suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Lonnie

  • Help me!!!!!!My iBook 800mhz sometimes can't wake up after  sleep mode...!!

Hi everybody. I'm a happy mac user sinc 2001, and i have since 2004 an ibook G4 800mhz. Ok, everything good, the problem is that from today if i leave the ibook in stop mode for half an hour for exemple it can't wake up, everything seems dead and i have to push the power button for 4 second and then turn the computer on again. If the sleep mode duration is about 5 minutes ok, otherwise it can't wake up. whyy???? what is the problem? i reset pram, nvram and pmu, but nothing. everything else works perfectly, but this is a very important problem for me because i risk to lose my work because i have always to reboot the system.
    Pleas help me!!!
Ps i'm sorry for english, but i'm italian...
    thanks a lot

    annihilator,
    Quoting from my own post:
""It could be a PMU problem. The PMU is actually a tiny computer within the computer. It's official designation is PMU99.
    http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Hardware/DeveloperNotes/Macintosh_CPUs-G4/12inchPowerBookG4/2_Architecture/chapter_3_section4.html
    "Power Control IC
The power manager IC in the 12-inch PowerBook G4 is a Mitsubishi M16C/62F microprocessor, also called the PMU99. It operates with its own RAM and ROM. The functions of the PMU99 include:
*controlling the sleep and power on and off sequences<</div>
    *real time clock
*controlling power to the other ICs
    *monitoring the battery charge level
    *controlling battery charging
*supporting the interface to the built-in keyboard (AND TRACK PAD)
The PMU99 also provides the hardware interface to the keyboard. Software in the PMU99 IC scans the keyboard, then sends the data to the system in packets like those from the ADB. To the system, the keyboard behaves as if they were ADB devices""
    Try resetting it:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
If that doesn't work try what I call a deep PMU reset.
Pull all power including the battery, push the power button to remove residual charge in soft start capacitors.
Then walk away from it for at least 10 hours.
This has worked for Macs with the PMU99 since the G3 Desktops and especially the G4 Towers (Sawtooth, GI, MD, etc)
    Also:
i had a problem with trackpad that became crazy, but i unmount it from the case i clean it and now it works better than perfecty.
Could you explain this more clearly? You opened up the iBook, then
i unmount it from the case
so you removed the trackpad part itself from the upper case? the trackpad part and associated circuitry? Was it glued to the upper case? in that kind of little well it sits in? But you didn't break the plastic welds that hold the "clicker" part to the upper case?
i clean it and now it works better than perfecty.
    Which part was dirty?

  • NEW iBook and doesn´t wake up after sleep mode!

    Hi,
I´ve just started to use my new iBook G4 3 days ago, added my user information, and for a little while the wireless internet connection. Then, I closed the display to put it on sleep mode.....and.............it DOESN´T WAKE UP!!!
The hard disk seems to start up correctly (the fan is on and the disk noise is ok), the Caps Lock on the keyboard is on too, but as soon as I reboot the computer, a strange beep (like a phone tone!) starts up, then the sleep light signal flashes but the screen stays black.
I think that by now I´ve tried the most solutions (as far as I can having the black screen) I´ve read on the troubleshooting page and the recommendations posted in this Discussion chat... The iBook remains partially dead.
    Help!!!

ummm, even when its not plugged in to the power adapter? i find that when my ibook annoyingly doesnt wake from sleep, its usually because i connected/disconnected something while it was sleeping. even plugging in the power adapter seems to affect it. the way i fix it is to put it to sleep again, and then open the lid. its worked every time so far.
oh, and apprantly 'manually' putting the ibook to sleep does the trick (ie from the apple menu)

  • Issues Exiting Sleep Mode and Odd Behavior On Restart with GPU

I'm running a completely stock HP P7-1240 desktop except for an EVGA GeForce GTX 750 TI SC GPU. The GPU runs fine when the computer is up and running (which is odd because the forums have several other threads mentioning that the 700 series should be incompatible with my BIOS).
However, there are two main strange problems that have arisen since installing the GPU. One is that, whenever the computer enters sleep mode, it refuses to wake back up properly. It seems to me that the computer activates but does not send any signals out from the back panel (at the very least, no video signal because my monitors stay blank). On a rare occasion, it will wake back up properly, but at least 90% of the time, it needs to be restarted. Upon restart, sometimes the same issue occurs (no video output), and the computer needs to be restarted a second time before it will boot up again.
This leads to the second problem. When starting, the computer goes to a black screen listing basic computer specs (see attached photo. At this screen, the computer does not respond to any input.  It proceeds to beep 3 times, all the same length and pitch spaced about 30 seconds apart. After the third beep, the screen goes black and then the computer boots up normally with no further odd behavior.
Without the GPU, none of these issues happen. At the very least, not regularly.
I have seen another thread mentioning that, although the HP support page for my desktop does not list it, there is a BIOS update for my motherboard that has fixed issues relating to more modern GPU's. By nature of it being a BIOS update that does not (appear to) officially support Windows 7, I'm hesitant to move forward with that potential solution.
Although I'm planning to build myself a new computer from scratch at some point, I was hoping to at least get another year out of this machine, if not 2.  While this issue doesn't appear to be immediately threatening the stability of the computer, I can't help but think that this is an issue I should iron soon to avoid future issues (not to mention it would save me a fair amount of electricity to be able to enter sleep mode on a regular basis).
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    Hello @johnmwalker,
I understand that you are having some issues with your HP Pavilion p7-1240 Desktop PC waking up from sleep mode. I am not sure how much can be done for the delay on your startup with an OEM BIOS you are limited in what you can do and since your graphic card works I think you would be better off not messing too much with the BIOS at this point. The one thing I would try is going into the BIOS using the HP Support document:BIOS Setup Utility Information and Menu Options, and under Advanced > Power-On Options set POST Messages to Disable and POST Delay (in seconds) to None.
Now the waking from sleep mode issue  could just be the hybrid sleep setting causing you an issue with sleep mode. Use the following steps to disable hybrid sleep:
    Step 1. Click Start
    Step 2. Click Control Panel.
Step 3. Click System and Security
    Step 4. Click Power Options
Step 5. Click High Performance from Power Options
Step 6. Click Change plan settings
Step 7. Select Change advanced power settings
Step 8. Click the plus (+) sign next to Sleep
Step 9. Click the plus (+) sign next to Allow hybrid sleep
Step 10. Select Off from the drop-down menu
    Step 11. Click OK
Please re-post if you require additional support. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums. Have a great day!

  • IBook g3 go on sleep mode when booting ?

    Hi,
I have that weird problem since a long time ago... even with OS9.. Now i have OSX (10.4).
    So what i do:
    - I plug my iBook on the wall (battery hold 1min only so...)
    - Lift up the LCD screen
    - Power it up by the button on the keyboard
    - I hear the sound, screen go blue, i see the logo and everything
    - Then, boom. it all go OFF: lcd, hard drive, power
So to wake it up i have to:
press the keyboard or move the lcd screen back and forth or press the power again.
Why do i have that problem, is it hardware or software, can you help me check a few thing please?
oh, btw, sleep mode is set to 15min, and the clock is alway s resetting itself because of my poor battery...
    Thanks !
    Tangu.

Hi thanks for replying to me.
The first thing I would recommend is to try resetting the PMU.
I could not find any reset button for the PMU...?? i did boot into open firmware, and i reset-nvram and reset-all. is it okay?
If this works you will see your normal desktop. Once
completely started up in Safe Mode, try to restart
normally, and go to Applications > Utilities > Disk
Utility. Click on the top hard drive icon in the left
sidebar and note the S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom
right of the pane. What does it
    say?
    It is said: Verified
Select the named boot volume in the left sidebar,
("Macintosh HD" unless you've renamed it). What is the hard drive capacity and how
much space remains available on it? Repair
    permissions on it.
    Done. (about the repair)
I have 18.6 Gig with 12.2 available and 6.5 used. It is a IBM IC25N020ATCS04-0
See if you are able to do a little hard drive
    maintenance to help things out.
    I'll check... thanks
    Tangu.

  • 10.5.2 update and Leopard Graphics update = no sleep mode

All, After updating my MacBook Pro to 10.5.2 and the Leopard Graphics update, my computer will not longer enter sleep mode after a specified time. I can manually set the computer to sleep mode, but it will not automatically go to sleep mode. I have tried resetting the System Management Control Center VIA http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303319 and everything else in that doc.
    Any suggestions?

Call AppleCare and see if they can help.
    Regular trouble shooting
    1) Create a new account, name it test or something
    2) log into that account to see if the behavior changes
    3) If it does, then there is some problem in your own account.
    4) If it doesn't, restart.
    5) If the behavior still doesn't change, there is some system configuration error
    In this case
    6) Open Disk Utility. Verify your disk, then repair permissions (not likely to fix the problem but will at least eliminate that possibilty)
    7) Get a copy of Leopard Cache Cleaner and do a MODERATE cache cleaning
    8) Restart
If still not fixed, reset PRAM and the SMU. Look on the Apple web site for instructions for your particular computer.
If still not different, do an Archive and Install. However go to the Apple web site and download the 10.5.2 Combo updater first. After you Archive and Install from either the disk that came with your computer (assuming that it is Leopard) or the retail Leopard installer. Then run the combo updater. Then run Software Update.
These problems are disturbing and really shouldn't happen, but they do. However, they can be fixed and you'll find that Mac OS is, overall, much better than the alternatives.
BTW, I just went through this whole mess for crashes on wake from sleep (USB issues) and failure to sleep (printer driver issue). Another computer had DHCP problems and actually needed a reinstall. However both of them are working fine now even though it was a pain getting there.

  • Going in & out of sleep mode

I have an iBook G4 with a 12" display I haven't had any problems with it until my last update (I update whenever there are available updates). I restarted my mac like normal after the update and found that after the white loading screen with the tiny apple logo loaded my mac asked me to restart. It did this 5 or 6 time in a row. With luck it finally loaded back up and I backed up all of my files & decided to reformat and start from scratch thinking it was something to do with the update.
After the reformat & reinstallation of OS 10.4 I thought I was ok, but I wasn't. Now when I shut the screen for it to go into sleep mode it seems to start sleeping then turning itself back on, then sleeping again. It does this until I open the screen back up. Next it will come on and then go back to sleep until I wake it with the keyboard, then it runs fine.
I need to know whats wrong with my iBook so I can see about getting it working right again.
