IBook G4 (Early 2004) won't recognize RAM I just installed

My iBook has 256MB RAM and I recently bought a 1GB PC2100 DDR SODIMM 333MHz RAM card from macsales.com. The card appears to fit in the empty RAM slot, and locks in okay, but it does not seem to push in all the way (about a millimeter of the gold metal connectors (sorry about my lack of vocabulary) is exposed). It's hard to tell from the pictures in Apple's installation directions (http://www.info.apple.com/usen/cip/pdf/ibkg4/ibg4-mem-cip1.pdf) whether this is correct or not. When I start my computer it says the second RAM slot is still empty, leading me to think the card is not installed correctly. Since I had a similar issue installing an Airport card but then found out I just had to shove it in the slot, I wonder if I am supposed to just push the RAM in a little harder, but I don't want to break anything. Is there anything I can do to find out whether the problem is bad RAM or incorrect RAM?
I wonder if the RAM card I bought has the incorrect amount of MHz (there was a choice between 333 and 266)--would this cause the RAM to be unrecognized?

Hi Nicole,
Welcome to the Discussions,
It takes more force than you'd think necessary to fully seat the card. Take it out and apply even pressure to seat it fully.

  • RAM for iBook G4 (early 2004) - PC2100 or PC2700??

    Hi,
    i want to add 1GB RAM in my iBook G4 (early 2004) 1.2GHz 14''.
Which i found out can handle PC2100 (and is PC2700 compatible) according to this doc.
Which one you recommend, PC2100 or PC2700? Any diference?
So can i buy any RAM with the following specification?
    1GB RAM PC2700 (or PC2100) - DDR 333 SO-DIMM - 200pin
    thanks in advance
    iBook G4 1.2GHz 14'' (early 2004)   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   256RAM - 60 GB

    Hi,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
Both will work. There's no advantage to using PC2700 as it will run at PC2100 speed. Go with the least expensive of the two.

  • Ibook G4 (Early 2004) wireless

Does anybody knows if my Ibook G4 (early 2004) 12.1 inch serial number UV4232SKQJP is airport extreme ready? I want to go wireless but I don't know if I shoud buy the aiport card or the airport extreme card. How could i know which one? Thanks.

    According to Low End Mac:
    http://www.lowendmac.com/ibooks/12-100.html
The 12" iBook G4/1 GHz introduced 2004.04.19 had wireless networking: 54 Mbps AirPort Extreme optional.
So you would just need an Airport Extreme card (mounts under the keyboard on the left). Take a peek to make sure one's not already there.

  • Is iBook G4 (early 2004) battery hot-swappable during sleep

Is the battery of an iBook G4 (early 2004) hot-swappable while the computer is in sleep mode and the power adapter is not connected?

No. Download the iBook Manual from this page:
    http://www.apple.com/support/ibook/
On page 46 of the manual, it says to shut down the iBook before removing the battery.
The online instructions for iBook battery replacement can be found here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88121
Again, it tells you to shut down the iBook before removing the battery. This has not changed for the iBook G4.
Here is the list for part numbers for backup batteries:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86181
Note that all iBooks are listed as n/a (not applicable) when it comes to backup batteries. Since your iBook does not have a backup battery, the battery is not hot-swappable.

  • Itunes library too large and won't recognize all files, just new ones but

still shows the old ones and their location in the library. I was keeping the library on the 2TB external drive. It got too large. Now I want to put the music on one of the 1TB drives and just the videos on the 2TB drive. From my PC, I can watch everything.
I cannot download to an iPod or iTouch anything from the 2TB drive. When I hit max capacity, I temporarily started saving on one of my internal 2TB drives (space wh*re, I know)before I hit on what my solution would be, and now I can only download from that location. Why?
What can I do? I even tried switching the library location back, and it won't recognize anything. I'm screwed, and I have all this material... YEARS of collecting...
    Someone please help me...

To clarify, currently on the 2TB external drive are music and videos. I want to split them up and hopefully save some space - and maybe foresee problems in the future when I hit max capacity on the 1TB external, and think about a 4GB (not the best option I see at this time) or another 2 2TB drives.
Doesn't the Library file just save locations when iTunes closes down so everything should be OK? I mean, the prog can recognize everything, it just won't download to anything, even if I move from the external drive an older movie to the new drive, it refuses to "see" the movie so I can download it.

  • IBook Won't Recognize RAM

I tried installing a 512MB (which I bought online at the Apple Store) module and the computer keeps reading it has only 256MB. I've tried re-installing it in the slot plenty of times but it still shows up as empty. I recently had the computer repaired for a HD problem but I doubt that there is any connection. If I take it to the Genius Bar at the Apple Store, do you think they'll fix it? The last thing I want is to pay some ridiculous amount of money for something as simplistic as adding RAM. Though I'm out of ideas...

When there is an opportunity to carry in your computer and have someone
also take a few minutes to double-check your RAM and reinstall it on the
spot, take advantage of it. Nobody in my home state has the opportunity
to see an Apple Genius. You may need a copy of your RAM recipt.
If you need to call ahead to inquire about getting an appointment, or to see
if one is necessary, that may be the polite thing to inquire before going there.
Could be the RAM module itself has a flaw; and in the course of removing
and installing that same chip again at a Genius Bar, they may have a known
good chip on hand to drop into your computer to see if the slot is OK, too.
The RAM can be a snug and hard to fit piece in these; so if it
does not work after snapping it carefullly and firmly, it may be bad.
Hopefully it is only the 512MB RAM chip and not something else.

  • Entourage 2004 won't recognize v.x's user data

On my intel iMac, I can install both Office x and 2004. I took my user data from my G4 and put it in my documents folder on the intel. But only Entourage version x will open with all my stuff. When I launch Ent. 2004, it doesn't recognize my data and just goes to the set-up screen without asking to import anything. I've tried uninstalling both versions, had them on the new machine at the same time, separate times, deleted caches and prefs, etc. When going from v.x to 2004 on a Power PC, 2004 asks to import right away and everything is dandy. Is this an intel issue? All copies of Office are legal, etc. I've even erased the intel iMac and reinstalled the OS. Nothing has worked and I can find nothing online anywhere. And on top of that, even though Entourage "works" in v.x, when I go to quit it, it does, but I get the message saying that it unexpectedly quit. Can someone please help me out?
I know this might not be the right forum for this question, but it's as close as I could find.

  • Mac pro 2006 won't recognize ram

Hey Everyone.....I'm not a giant techie, but now my way around a computer more than most I guess...here's my question...
I have a Mac Pro 2006 running 2ghz dual core xeon processors and with 2gbs Ram (2GB x 4).....I just finally upgraded my ram and purchased 8gb's (4GB x 2)!
I installed the new ram in Riser A in slots 1 & 2, and moved the old ram all to Riser B in slots 1-4 but I think I screwed something up. I booted up my machine and it recognizes the 8gb modules (whew!) but doesn't recognize the old 2gb's. I don't know what configuration I should use.
Should I have Riser A full with slots 1-4 occupied by my new 8gb's and a pair of the 512's, putting 9gb's on Riser A?? Then I would put the second 512's on Riser B?? 9 on Riser A and 1 on B??
8GB Ram is making such a great performance upgrade, but 10GB's of Ram would be pretty sweet too!! :)
Thanks for any and all help.

Assuming that the new RAM is for Mac Pro and "look the same"
Sometimes two brands or different sets from the same make don't get along.
    Where you installed is fine.
I didn't understand what it was, and what it is now.
    You have:
    4 x 512MB for 2GB
    4 x 2GB
    2 x 4GB
    Ideal would be
    Riser A: 2 x 4GB
    Riser B: 2 x 2GB
    See if that works first.
    Run Apple Hardware Test
The math and figures you posted don't add up for me.

I have a computer I purshased in 1999 with a PIII 733Mhz processor and a MS-6368 Ver. 2.1 Motherboard.  the computer orignaly came with 128MB of ram. A few years ago I upraged this to two 128MB sticks and the computer worked fine.  I recently purchased two 512Mb sticks of ram and installed them in the computer.  The problem is  that the computer only recognizes 768MBs of Ram and I do Not know why. Can anyone help me please.
    Thanks

    • Supports four memory banks using two 168-pin unbuffered DIMM.
    • Supports a maximum memory size of 1GB (32M x 8).
    • Supports 3.3v SDRAM DIMM.

i would guess its down to the chip density
assuming you tried the 2x 512mb
how many chips on each of them
i bet one with most chips is seen as full size

  • M50-S1001 won't recognize RAM upgrade

I have the original 256mb RAM stick and a 1 gb stick that I added a couple of years ago. I decided to add another 1 gb to improve performance. I bought the stick from Toshiba after reading that these computers can be finicky with regards to RAM. Before the change it was indicating 1.12 gb of memory. After I replaced the 256 mb stick with the new 1 gb stick it showed only 875 mb. I have tried every combination of the three RAM sticks and 2 slots and the only way I can get more than 875 mb is the orginal 256 mb and the old 1 gb.
Anybody got a clue? Thanks in advance.

  • Macbook won't recognize ram

I've just bought 2 blocks of ram for my macbook 2.1 ghz intel core 2 duo, OSX 10.5.7, originally with 1gb (2x 512) ram, purchased late 2008.
I bought 2x2GB (all information on the cards itself: S2D800-064566TG, 2GB SODIMM, PC2-6400, DDR2 800mhz.) but now they don't want to work.
I read that macbook doesn't support 800mhz ram, so I tried with 1 800mhz (2gb) and one 667mhz (512mb) cards and I'm able to boot.
Now, is there any way to use both the 800mhz cards in my macbook or do I have to go back to the shop?

Hey Martijn and welcome to the forum -

  • Mac Mini won't recognize CD's after installing Leopard

I keep having to do a restart to get my mac mini to recognize CD's for importing into iTunes. I insert a CD it spins - it temporarily see it in iTunes (less than 1 sec - more of a 'flash') then thats it. I have to restart in order for mac or iTunes to see CD. Other than that, Leopard install seems to work fine.

Same problem here, on certain CD's only. Most CD's work fine.
Upon inserting the CD, iTunes will open, the CD will show up as an icon in iTunes for a split second, and then disappear. The CD does not appear on the desktop. CD can be ejected with the eject button on the Apple keyboard though.
When I change system preferences to ignore CD insertion, the CD mounts fine and shows up in iTunes.
This has been happening since installing 10.5 and several different versions of iTunes.
The same CD that won;t work on 10.5 works fine with my G5 PowerMac running 10.4.8 and iTunes 7.0.2.
This appears to be an OS 10.5 issue, then.

  • Computer won't recognize ipod and ipod flases foler with exclamation point

Last week, my computer randomly said it did not recognize my ipod. I continued to use it and figured I'd worry about updating it another time. Then today, I was using my nano and it stopped and flashed the folder with the exclamation point icon and below the icon directed my to Apple's support website. I've tried most of the things I've seen in the forums, and I really have no clue what to do. Everytime I try to turn it on, the icon comes up and everytime I try to connect to iTunes my computer won't recognize it.

    rfletche,
Just confirming... have you seen these articles?
iPod displays a folder icon with an exclamation point
iPod displays a sad iPod icon
Also, see this post by Mitch 751, a user on these Discussions, which details some things to try with an exclamation point and folder symbol on an iPod:
