IBook G4 error code

Our iBook was left open today (not in hard drive "sleep", but with the display dark) as it often is during the day, but when we brought up the display the cursor was missing and the machine unresponsive.
I restarted and as it started up, there was a file folder that alternately flashed a Mac logo and a question mark. I restarted from the CD, ran Disk Repair and received the error code "2STF/8/3:ATA-100 ata-6 - Master" in the Mass Storage. I ran the Hardware Test CD and it told me nothing. I have just run Disk Repair a second time and am getting a "Volume Check Failed" notice with and additional notice that says "Error - The underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972)" which, I assume, is a bad thing as well.
The other odd thing is that now when the machine is restarted, there is at first a flashing white square with a world globe in it before the flashing file folder busines starts again.
In any event, the machine won't get past all that and start up.
If my present assumption is correct, then the hard drive is dead...but is there someone out there much more accomplished and informed than I am who can tell me what's going on (and, hopefully, how to fix it)?

TwoRaleys:
does SuperDuper need a dedicated external HD for backup? I'm seriously considering using Leopard's backup app as well
My knowledge of Leopard is very limited. However, my understanding is that if you are planning to use both Time Machine and SuperDuper, you will need two separate drives, or at least two separate partitions. I am not quite up on the intricacies of Time Machine, however my understanding is that it is constantly backing up every so often, then combines these later into hourly and daily backups etc. I can't swear by that, but that is a rough guess.
SuperDuper, on the other hand, makes a clone or an identical copy of either your entire HDD or your Users Folder, as you choose. The neat thing about cloning the entire HDD is that it is a bootable volume and can be used as a startup disk, if needed in an emergency, or to run tests and repairs on the internal HDD. However, SuperDuper erases the HDD before cloning, so anything that is not on the source being cloned is removed from the destination. When doing SmartUpdates (cumulative backups), which is unlocked after you pay $28 and register your copy of SD, it compares the source to the destination, erases what needs to be updated on the destination and then updates it. Obviously you will not want your Time Machine backup on the same drive, as it will be erased by SuperDuper.
Carbon Copy Cloner is donation ware, and it clones like SuperDuper. It is not quite as user friendly as SD, in my opinion, but it does a couple of things SD does not.
1. You can choose to not erase the destination drive before cloning by checking a checkbox.
2. While SD gives you the option to clone either the entire HDD/volume or the Users Folder only, CCC allows you to drill down to a single folder for cloning.
I have a registered copy of SD that I use for regular SmartUpdates and cloning. I use CCC for special needs, when I need to clone a very narrowly defined target such as a folder or two.
If you decide to use both SD and CCC for backing up, in addition to Time Machine, you will need three separate drives. This may be an excellent backup strategy. I have two separate backup drives, that I backup alternately, so if I backed up a problem, I can go back to the previous backup.
Long explanation to a simple question.
May I suggest, in this regard, when you decide to setup your new backup system, that you post in the Using Leopard forum, where there are folk who are better acquainted with the Time Machine feature of Leopard, as well as SD and CCC, and who can offer you better informed suggestions.
Of course, if you have further questions please don't hesitate to post back here.
Good luck.

  • Error Codes for ibook G4

A friend asked me to replace the hard drive in their iBook G4. (800 MHz). The hard drive was toasted and wasn't accessible in target mode. I've got a new 40 GB drive installed.
When I boot the computer, it beeps 3 times. The power on LED flashes 3 times, then stays on for 10 seconds and loops. What does this error code mean? Is there a list of the codes some where?
    Thanks
    Chris Peterson

Getting three beeps at startup suggests that there's a problem with the RAM. Try removing and reinserting the RAM modules installed in the machine. More information about the codes is available here.

  • IBook G4 Crashing... Error Code 00DAEB78

For the past two weeks my IBook has been crashing. Sometimes the power button doesn't respond when I try to turn it on, sometimes it crashes during startup, sometimes 5 min. later, other times after hours of use. It leaves me with an unresponsive screen showing the last page viewed, and no turning wheel shows either (its just the cursor, which doesn't move). It's not just the screen, as all sounds from the computer (including the fan) cease. One time it happened I had a bar across the top of the screen showing:
System Failure: cpu=0; code=00DAEB78 (unknown failure code)
I've ran the extended hardware test (which showed nothing wrong), repaired all disk permissions, reinstalled all original software... nothing has fixed it. I don't know where to go to check into the error code. Any ideas?

There may be an authorized Apple specialist if not an actual Apple Store in your region; where
you could call ahead to see what they do, and if it is possible to leave the computer there for
some time (maybe several days) or send it in to a private company if they're beyond a reason-
able day's drive. The Apple Store online also has a finder page to see where a nearby reseller
may be located; if you use that, the information given in reply may help you find a reseller with
the product specialist on staff. If nothing else, you could call the phone number shown for a
reseller with a service department, and you could ask if you could speak to a tech; and get some
idea on your down time and initial estimates for them to look it over and test the computer.
I'm not familiar with the Apple trouble codes; and assuming your iBook no longer has an Apple
Care protection plan in effect, a call to AppleCare support would require a credit card and a fee.
A reseller with on-staff repair facilities and product experts could give you a better idea of what
you are up against than a call to AppleCare; unless your product still has an active extended
product warranty from Apple. If you are not sure, and less than three years has gone by since
buying the computer, you may be able to run the iBook serial number in the space provided in
the Support page (online) to see what is on record about your computer. (AppleCare optional
coverage was available for purchase to extend the initial product support and repair coverage.)
Hopefully a not so far away authorized repair tech can help you resolve the issue; it could be
one of several things, but that error code could help someone narrow down the problem and
somebody should be able to tell you on the phone what you may be up against; but further
testing and what not would probably be required in troubleshooting and repairing the machine.
You may be able to find a reseller with authorized product repair specialist through this link:
http://www.apple.com/buy/locator/ (if there is no longer a warranty, you have a few other
repair options outside the AppleCare plan; such as wegenermedia.com online.)
    Good luck in this matter!

  • Error code -50 or system hand when copying

    Hi all
I'm hoping someone can give me some extra info about an error code -50 / system hang that I keep experiencing. I've already done some research so I think I know where the problems might lie but not exactly how to solve them.
OK, my iBook hard drive is getting full, possibly too full, it's a 60Gb drive with 8.5Gb free space when I boot, which drops to around 7.8 Gb when I've been working for a while. I backup to an HFS+ formatted Lacie d2 drive connected by firewire.
To free up disk space on the iBook I decided to get a Netgear readyNAS duo, use this as a backup device. Then use the firewire drive to store and work on data which would previously have been on the internal drive.
So no I have the firewire drive set up, with all the data and I'm trying to backup to the readyNAS before deleting anything on my iBook drive. So far I have tried the following to copy data from the iBook, or from the firewire drive to the readyNAS:
    1) Copy and paste using Finder
    2) NTI Shadow backup software (supplied with the Netgear readyNAS)
    3) Chronosync (trial copy)
    4) Synk 6.4 pro
Using these methods (and the trial software within it's imitations) I get the following results:
    1) Finder will produce "Error Code -50" message sometimes and stop. Other times the whole Finder will just hang after approx 650Mb of data has been copied. The whole Finder stops responding and the only solution has been to force shut down using the power button.
    2) NTI Shadow will produce a series of errors saying the file or folder could not be created (I'm guessing this is it's response to a system Error Code -50) and sometimes will hand.
    3) Chronosync will copy most items but not all - "error creating file/folder" is the result. Sometimes it hangs.
    4) Synk 6.4 has the same result as Chronosync.
After looking though posts here and on the readynas.com forums, it seems the problem may be one of three things, in order of likelihood:
    1) Characters used in some of the file/folder names are OK in HFS+ formatted disks but not compatible with whatever format the readyNAS uses for it's disks (I'm guessing a linux/unix format). The readyNAS does support AFS, which it says is the best file system to use for Mac systems.
Therefore, what characters should be removed from file/folder names before trying to copy? Is there a definitive list somewhere?
    2) The current iBook disk space is not large enough to allow me to copy over all the files in one go. I don't think this is the case as I've not been trying to back up the whole lot.
    3) There is a permissions issue. Again, I have set all permissions on the readyNAS volume to 777 so I don't think the problem is this.
    4) Max file size on the readyNAS. One file tried to copy is a 700Mb zip file, this is the file which has caused Finder to hang more than any other, after about 650Mb has been transferred
Any comments / advise will be really helpful, even if it's just to help me discount a theory.

    Hi BDAqua
We were talking about a similar topic here a few weeks ago! My answers are below:
    BDAqua wrote:

    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107095
I can connect to the shared drive fine and can copy/delete/move most individual files to and from the NAS. The error-50 comes during copy of multiple files.
How big is the Firewire drive?
    320Gb - easily large enough
I'm thinking you should make a complete bootable clone to it myself.
Get carbon copy cloner to make an exact copy of your old HD to the New one...
    http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
This is exactly how I've been backing up in the past except using Superduper (not Carbon Copy Cloner) to create bootable backups. The issue now is that I need to free up space on the iBook hard drive.
If the NAS can be formatted for AFS/HFS+/MacOSextended, then that is best.
I don't know what format the disks use. I think the readyNAS uses a form of linux as it's OS. It does support AFS however.
Shame you already got the NAS, they're popular, but quirky.
Yes, beginning to regret it but still can't say for certain if I'm doing something wrong or if the unit simply does not work as advertised. I bought this unit because of it's advertised AFS support and OSX compatibility, also for it's RAID capability and easy expansion
filename/path length can be a problem as well as the illegal characters are / ? \ : * | ", as well as any character you can type using the Ctrl key.
That makes a long list of characters to check, especially over approx 175000 files... I was planning to use Spotlight to do the checks but maybe you know of a quicker way?
Just one more thought, I have an old Win XP box with more than enough space to try a backup to there. If the backup works without problems, it means a) I can try connecting to the NAS using SMB and b) it provides a good control case for working out what the problem is.
    Thanks for the help!

  • Question about error code

I have been having problems when I try to open applications such as IPhotos or Photoshop. They keep on quitting. I did the Hardware Test and it showed error code 2MEM/5/4:DIMM1/J31. Does anyone know what it means and what I should do? I do not have a warranty anymore and now I wondered if I am gonna have to get the coverage plan (my budget is tight right now). Thank you for any help you can give me.

Either the module has failed or has come loose. At this time I'd open up your computer and make sure it's still locked in place. Afterwards, no need to run the hardware test, just check with System Profiler to see if you were able to nudge it back into position.
Once in a while RAM modules do fail, but not very often.
    Edit-
Since you apparently did not purchase this from Apple, it probably is still under lifetime warranty by the seller, so look up your original order number on the invoice and fill out an RMA request on the website of your supplier, or of the manufacturer (brand) itself. If they don't have a Support section or warranty or RMA section, you'll have to email them.
Put off thinking about eBay until you find out if it will be replaced under warranty.
[If you had an extra 1GB of memory, that is not going to be a bargain on eBay, as many are just now upgrading and trying to buy that size, but if you had an extra 512MB, then that is what can be found for a fraction of the price you'd have to pay for new anywhere else. If you're really lucky you can find someone with a relatively new iBook or PowerBook who might be looking to sell what hardly had any use. Caution in shipping is required, as the biggest cause of RAM failure is mishandling of the module between manufacture and packaging.]

  • Error Code -39 Was Returned By CoreAudio Driver

Here's the setup: I was recording using my iBook G4 using 10.4.6 and the latest version of GarageBand in iLife 06. I was recording using a mic hooked up to my computer using an iMic. All looked fine when I first hooked it up. I was getting audio out of it, it sounded good, it sounded clear, life was great. So, at the start of our rehearsal, I hit record and let it go. Towards the end of our first half, I noticed that it stopped recording because it hit the 1999 measure mark (as expected). So, during our break, I went back to go fudge with it for the second half. But, this is when the problems started. First, when I went back to measure 1996 to just hear the last few measures to hear where it stopped, I got silence and then a dialog box saying "error code -39 was returned by the coreaudio driver." When I went to the beginning of the project, it seemed fine. As I skipped along, it seemed fine. But, later on in the project, I'd still get that same -39 error message. When I finally found the point of failure, I heard audio, and then heard a loud piece of static for the equivalent of two measures, and then got this error message. Throughout this entire time, nothing changed. The computer just sat, no one (including me) touched the machine. It just recorded. Is there a reason why it would have just done this randomly? Is there any explanation to this code? To top it off, the iMic stopped recording. I couldn't get it to record again. For some reason, all works now, but why it stopped working last night, I don't know. But, if anyone knows why this happened, what I might be able to do to prevent it, and any additional info, I'd appreciate it.
    Thanks!!!

I can't tell you the Whats or Whys, I'm afraid B-(>
Here is something you can try. I don't usually recommend this method of attack, but if the recording was important and the .band file is corrupt, it's worth a try.
Ctrl-click the .band file and choose Show Package Contents. Open the Media folder, your recording should be in there. Option-Drag it to someplace else on your hard drive and try opening that file with QuickTime Player. See if Player can play it all the way through.
I wouldn't get my hopes TOO high, but it's worth a try. --Hang

  • Error Code 2STF/1/4

I was cleaning files from my iBook G4 using Secure Empty Trash when it froze.  Upon restart I get a file folder with the Mac face alternating with a question mark.  I tried to reinstall the software from the original disc, but at the step to select a destination there seems to be no hard drive.  I then did the hardware test from the original disc, with a mass storage error detected and error code 2STF/1/4.  What does this mean, and is there anything I can do to repair this to the point to sell it?

Another thanks for this discussion. One step I had to add was to do a complete restart between deleting my .Mac username (maybe that was implied in the previous post). So for me it was:
    1. Preferences -> .Mac account
    2. Clear field with user name
    3. Close all and restart
    4. Re-type username and password
    and it worked! Thanks again.

  • My ipod classic 80gb shows an error code 1439 can it be fixed

my ipod classic 80gb shows an error code 1439 can it be fixed or can anyone help please.

    Hey there tomhanson
    How are you?
Well, I have an iPod Classic, it gave me the error -1436 error and would not restore on iTunes.
    I did the following:
My Boss (@work) has a fairly old iBook but it has OS-X, so I decided to give it a try and connected my iPod to it.
The system showed a window telling me that the disk is not MAC formated and needs to be validated prior further action. Snce it is a Mac product, I thought "yeah, go ahead".
It then opens the disk manager utility for the Mac and showed the disk. It's window has some tabs, one is to verify the disk, so I verified it. Guess what, it had some invalid clusters.
Then I formatted the iPod to OS-X Plus file system (next tab to the right). After formating the iPod, I "ejected" the iPod and reconnected to my PC. The Windows iTunes found an iPod with Mac file system and asked me to restore it. As I clicked on the "restore" button, I crossed my fingers as this was the last resource I have.
Finally, after the file extraction was done, it began to restore the iPod!!
I'm so happy about being able to restore the iPod that I decided to share with all you guys this solution as it is the most usefull, in my opinion.
Hope you can find someone with an iBook or a desktop Mac, so you can fix yours.
If it works for you, make sure to share the tip!!
    Kind regards

thinking about maybe switching to a mini later this year depending on what the new ones offer when they're announced.....
If that's what you are planning, wait till they are announced to be in the channel to find out what the mileage is like. You never know what new compatibility issues might arise. Remember with each new release, no Mac can run an older Mac operating system than shipped with it. So any experience we give here today may be vastly different from what you might run into in the future.
Then if people's mileage is not what you want, and it is better on the old, get a refurbished model*:

Note, most Mac Mini users are not running Pro Tools. If you want Pro Tools experience of today, it is better to ask in the Mac Mini forum. If you like, I can ask a moderator to move this thread.

  • Error code post/16/64?

I've been having recurring problems with my G4.
    Symptoms:
2nd internal hard drive warning such as prompting an error message of 'you must initialize, ignore, eject' then I re-boot, other times a prohibit sign, spinning rainbows, kernel panics. It's a mess.
This only happens on start up after shutting down for the night. But I think I've made things worse
I ran suggested back-ups, PRAM resets, ran cocktail, tried disk utility from start up, ran disk warrior from start up, it found some file errors, cleaned them up. Cloned my system using Superduper, backed the hd up on a NewerTech.
Next day, start up issues again.
I ran memtest, and that found nothing. Start up from install disc, ran disk utility, everything's passing, SMART status is verified.
But it is still not operating correctly. I still have start up issues.
This has been going on for at least a week.
I ran AHT twice. The first time all tests passed. I didn't believe it.
So I ran it again and I received the following:
error detection at the logic board:
error code: scc_/1/5 (I think this is a non-apple board warning)
    error code: post/16/64.
    What?
My internal HD (original) is running at 85% (60g)
My second internal is 120g partitioned with mostly back-ups (not the only back up) and documents.
Thank you to all the folks who've generously posted in the past and thank you in advance for the one that catches this.

The POST/16/64 points to an error on your processor board, bad cache memory. I had this same error, still have the processor on a shelf actually, and it took me months to find the code translation.
Apple says for a POST/16/xx error
    1. replace processor board
    2. replace main logic board
I don't know if there is a heat issue that causes this, but, several cases that I have heard of had systems that ran very hot.
A fellow in Singapore mentioned that he had the same error and believes that the heat causes the external cache chips on the 7455 processor board to loosen(I think your Gigadesigns is a 7447 based chip). He stated that he heated his chips and resolved the error:
"The cache are DDR type samsung BGA chips. This is most difficult as both sits directly opp each other. The only way I think is to heat the chip on 1 side below 220degC(removal at 350degC and soldering in at 300degC). Best if you can get a heater blower and blow at the small gap bet chip and processor board, very tiny clearance, less than 1mm. You can give it a try for the time being, on the chip itself though not the most ideal."
If there are other numbers at the end, ie POST/16/xx yyyy then it is likely a RAM problem or RAM slot problem
    1. reseat DIMMs
    2. replace DIMMS
    3. replace main logic board
Hope this helps, I ended up replacing my processor and as I stated before still have the originalon a shelf. I may try the heat trick one day though.

  • Error code and RAM

    Hi!
I´m new here, and I´m not sure if I´m in the right forum. I have a G3 iBook, 800 MHz, OS 10.3.9. I purchased extra RAM for it about 6 months ago. I just got a whole bunch of new programs (Adobe CS2), and only trying to install them caused problems. I had other problems before, too. Programs quit unexpected, discs wouldn´t mount... So I backed up all my files and tried to reinstall the system. The computer crashed completely and wouldn´t let me log in. So I took it in for repair and was told that my harddrive broke. Got it replaced, took it home, tried to install my programs...still the same problems. Some don´t install at all, others don´t open or I can´t save anything without crashing the program. So I ran the Apple Hardware Test, which came up with the following error code: mem_/2/3DIMM1/J12. That sounds to me like the RAM that I got about 6 months ago doesn´t work. So I took it in again this morning. They tested the RAM and said it is OK.
So what does that mean? The hardware test shows there is a problem, but the RAM is ok? Could the slot be broken? What exactly does the error code mean?
The guys in the store weren´t very helpful and I just spend $400 on a new harddrive. Anybody any idea what´s wrong with my computer?
    Help please! :o)
I´m desperate! I really really need a computer right now!
    Thanks!
    iBook G3 800MHz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   128 MB built-in, 512MB SDRAM

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Yes, you've found the right forum.
    Could the slot be broken?
This is a good possibility. Try removing the extra RAM and running with just the 128 MB. It will run pretty slowly that way, but, hopefully, will not crash if it's your RAM or RAM slot gone bad.
To check out the RAM, did you take it to the same shop that replaced your hard drive? If so, has it occurred to you that they may have said the RAM was okay because they don't want to admit they replaced your hard drive needlessly? I would get a second opinion on whether or not the RAM is defective.
