IBook G4 - External Display - Sony HS75P

Hiya,
I am thinking of buying a new external display for my iBook G4 (bought some 2 years ago). The display I have chosen to buy is Sony HS75P which seems to have great reviews.
My question is - will my iBook G4 be good enough to handle the big 17" monitor? HS75P has both Analog and Digital inputs, so I don't have a compatibility problem. But, will the graphics suffer in any way compared to the iBook display itself?
As such I have no plans to upgrade my Mac for atleast a year from now.
Please help me decide.
Cheers,
Shankar.

Hi,
Welcome to the Discussions.
when I'm using my external monitor, whether my iBook will go into sleep mode when I close the lid.
No it won't. There's a reed switch by the screen controlled by a magnet on the top case that will cause it to sleep. Yet you can connect your external monitor and wake it with the mouse.

  • IBook G3 external displays

Looking to add on a external large screen display adjacent to my desktop/laptop iBookG3 which has one video out port. What requirements should I consider when purchasing one? Size wise I would consider 17" optimum. Connection requirements? Models to stay away from?
    Thanks, CABJR

There is a VGA cable coming with the iBook. So - no converter needed. But 17-19-inch displays have a resolution of 1280*1024, 15-inch one of 1024*768. That is, your native resolution is transferred 1:1 only to a 15-inch TFT display which are quite cheap now. If you switch to a 17-19" your desktop rearranges itself to the greater surface and you have to get it in order again when you switch back to your internal display - which I find quite uncomfortable. So - best to set to the "native" 1024*768 resolution if you will work sometimes with an external display and sometimes without.

  • Ibook with external display

recently my backlight on my ibook went out and i don't quite have the money for a new laptop yet so i have decided to use an external monitor for the meantime. i just now need to know which of the adapters do i need for my ibook (G3 500mhz) in order for it to work on the external display? the plug for the display is the type that has three rows with 15 pins (it actually has 14 but there is just an empty place for one) in it. any help?

This is really a totally different question, and should be posted as its own topic to receive the attention it deserves.
In the iBook G4 forum, there is a bit of a discussion on the topic:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=943837
You may have to look for an older monitor in order to get one that supports the maximum resolution of the iBook.
The adapter that came with an iBook is a VGA adapter, so that's what you need to look for in a display.

  • Ibook G4 external display

I was wondering if an Apple 17" studio display model M7649 will hook up and work on my G4 Ibook?

It has to be a VGA display, therefore, it won't work with the Apple 17 Inch Studio Display. Your iBook G4 should have come with the Apple VGA Display Adapter. If not, you'll need to get one. A second display will support a resolution of up to 1024 X 768, mirroring only. You can also use a projector, 24-bit color.
Now I'm trying to determine which VGA LCD display will work with my PowerPC 7447a G4. 1.0GHz iBook.

  • External Display for iBook

I'm thinking about purchasing a 19" lcd monitor for use with my 12" iBook. I need something that makes photo editing easier. I'm looking at either a Viewsonic VA1930WM or a Samsung 906BW. Does anyone any experience with either of these monitors or another monitor that they would recommend? Thanks.

I would like to add that even with the hack mentioned before the iBook has limited external display resolutions.
Using resolutions above 1600 pixels wide may cause slowdowns. One limiting factor is the display adapters amount of memory. For me that is 32MB.
You may also notice some anomalities when sleeping and waking the iBook. These include for example: Missing the mouse cursor until it has passed from display to another (or duplicate pointers). Some coloured zebra style stripes over some windows until they are refreshed. X11-windows that open up too wide to fit on one screen. Windows or requesters that have moved outside the screen area showing only one pixel width on current screen.
I guess most of these problems are just plain normal operation and have nothing to do with the hack, but I might be wrong and these anomalities might not happen on higher end models, that offer the external displays that are not mirrored.
Otherwise the iBook handles external displays very nicely and OS X really supports multiple displays well.
Notice that in the Preferences -> Displays -> (Order?) you can drag the menubar to another screen, if you want to make that screen the primary display.

  • External Display : No Video

When I connect the MBA to an external display there appears to be no video sent to the display. The external display detects no video. I'm using the MBA VGA connector. When I check System Profiler it shows the proper external display as being connected.
When I connect the same video cable (different connector) to my iBook the external display works properly.
Any ideas? Could it be a bad VGA connector? HW problem? I plan to go by the genius bar tonight but I wanted to check if there was something I was missing on the MBA to properly connect it to an external monitor.
    Thanks,
    Jerry

    Jerry,
I'm having exactly the same problem connecting to a Sharp Aquos display via the VGA adapter from Apple through a VGA to DVI cable to the DVI input on the TV. The MBA recognizes it is connected to a Sharp display. I tried selecting both analog and digital DVI, with no luck. I've had this work on another older laptop with the same VGA to DVI cable and TV. What did you find out from Apple?

  • IBook G4 screen broken, can't use external Display

    hi folks:
I have a late model G4 iBook (which is outside of the logic board replacement program) that the screen broke and i've been trying to get the external display adapter w/my monitor to work but I can't seem to get it to switch. i can boot the ibook and get the Mac boot 'tone' and it boots (and I can use the volume control buttons (I can hear them working) once it's fully booted (although I can't see anything to tell if it's booted)...and i can see in my router logs that it attempts to get an IP address from my DHCP server..so i know the iBook works, i just can't seem to get it to switch to the external display with the cable attached to the side of my iBook. I've tried resetting the PRAM and fn-F1 to switch to the external display, but nothing seems to work.
i can't afford to fix the broken display, so I wanted to set this up as a mini-desktop..and of course i'd like to get my iTunes music off of the machine along w/some pictures and stuff.
Any ideas guys, i'm at my wits end and not sure what else to try.
    Thanks again.
    -c
Ps..even if there's some way I can 'hack' into my OWN box and just use remote desktop to control the iBook from my other mac...that would be ok too...
    THANKS GUYS

Connect the two Macs with a FireWire cable and start up the iBook with the T key held down. You should then be able to copy off all the files you need from the iBook's hard disk.

  • Ibook - External Display problem

    Hi,
I have ibook G3 running on Mac OS 10.1.3
Its screen starts flickering and hence I connected new external monitor using VGA adopter.
It worked fine for a month. Now I am facing a strange problem... red colour is missing from external monitor.
ibook display though it is flickering, shows red colour
Monitor is new and I don’t think it is monitor problem.
    Any idea what's happening!!
    Regards,
    -Manoj

Have you tried disconnecting and reconnecting the external display?
    Yes. However, no change...
Have you tried restarting the computer?
    Yes. However, no change...
Have you tried calibrating the monitor?
    Yes. However, no change...
It could be that you need a new display adapter
    Let me try this...
    Thanks and Regards,

  • Using an iBook as an external display

I have an intel iMac (the first intel iMacs) running leopard 10.5.7 and was wondering if there is any way of connecting my iBook to it to be used as an external display? My iBook is running Panther. I got it working a while ago using a vnc client but it was really laggy and slow. I was wondering if theres any way of doing this possibly using firewire?

If your expectation is for the video using ScreenRecycler to be as fast as a real display, then it will seem slow. 100Base-T data transfer speed (even if you actually get close to that theoretical max speed) is very slow compared to data going over a real video connection to a real display. So you should not expect to be able to play videos smoothly. What that second screen is quite userful for is to display windows that remain mostly static. For example, you can put tool palette windows (for various programs that use such tools) on that screen. I use it to show my main Mail window and browser windows with things such as stock quotes and news headlines.

  • IBook not auto-detecting my external displays any more

I have an iBook G4 which has recently stopped auto-detecting the addition or removal of external displays (both tv and my external monitor). Forcing detection using the system preferences still works. Anyone have any ideas as to how I might fix this problem?
    Thanks

Plug the drive into your computer
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility
Click on your drive on the left side of the window and then click Repair Disk at the lower right hand corner of the main window
It may take 30-45 minutes for this to complete. Then try the drive again at the USB port of the AirPort Extreme. Be sure to power everything off when you do this and restart things one at a time.
If that does not help, your last resort is to plug the drive into your computer again and open Disk Utility again. This time click Repair Disk Permissions. Then try again.
Are you trying to use Time Machine with the drive attached to the USB port on the AirPort Extreme?

  • External Display Won't Recognize in Native Resolution

I have a 40" Sony Bravia 1080p TV. I'm currently hooking it up using mini display adapter to vga, then vga into the PC port in the TV.
Display preferences recognizes the TV as a VGA display. which is fine, however it won't display in the 1920 x 1080 60HZ setting.
Sometimes display preferences recognizes the external display (TV) as a SONY TV. When this happens, it allows me to select a 1080p setting, which works great.
Does anyone know why my mac recognizes the external display as VGA display one time, then a SONY TV the next?
is there any way to manually set what type of external display is hooked up?
It's not a huge issue, but it's frustrating, and i don't understand it.
    Any help is appreciated!

Probably the TV needs to be turned on before the Mac. And when the Sony is switched away from the TV to another input and then switched back to VGA, that's probably when the Mac loses connection to the TV's identity.
You could try the Detect Displays command when that happens, or else try unplugging and replugging the the VGA connector. That's a pain but it might work.
If you want a real permanent solution, something like the Gefen DVI Detective will work. It was designed to fix problems like this.

  • Is there a way to use an external display while keeping the Macbook open?

I'm trying to use my external display as my primary (and only display). I would be operating in clamshell mode, but this can lead to overheating issues. Is there an easy way to leave the Macbook open but turn its screen off manually when another display is connected?
I've found that by closing the macbook, plugging in a mouse, waiting for the macbook to start in clamshell mode, and then opening the display, I can do this. Is there an easier way (i.e., an option to tell the macbook display to turn off)

could you not just connect it with the vga adapter and then turn the brightness of your screen all the way down so there is no light? i had to do that for my ibook g4 when i cracked the lcd, but thankfully i have my macbook now.

  • Occasional flicker on external display

I have connected my Macbook Air to the bluray player of my home cinema system that is connected to my TV.
This allows me to use my TV as external display.
It works pretty well, except that my TV screen occasionally flickers on an irregular interval. Usually 1-10s apart.
The flickers can be described as horizontal screen wide grey/whitish bars or complete screen encompassing bars that appear for a split second
    How can I fix this?
    This is my setup:
                             1       2                             3
MacBook Air ===> ===> Bluray Player ===> TV
1: mini displayport to hdmi adapter
    2: HDMI cable
    3: HDMI cable
    MacBook Air:
    MacOS 10.8.5
    13-inch
    Mid 2012
    2 GHz Intel Core i7
    8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Intel HD Graphics 4000 512 MB
    Bluray Player
    Samsung HT-F5200
    TV
    Samsung UE32F5505
    Additional info:
When connecting my macbook directly to the TV, bypassing the bluray player, this phenomenon does not occur.

Digital or analog audio out from the bluray to speakers?
Either way they make a analog or digital switching device for same that lets you select import source
TV into switcher.....and bluray same.....then either digital or analog out to speakers
However a digital switcher will cost more than an AppleTV would, and with the AppleTV you can forego all the wires, however there is still the speaker system which would need to be addressed.
Even HDMI from Apple TV to the HDMI port on the bluray theres an obvious video processing conflict not allowing same. Ive tried same thru my Bluray experimentally and got the same just to test it 10 mins. ago on a LG 60" HD TV thru a Sony Blu Ray player.   'No dice'
If you only need the DISPLAY off your macbook Air, why not just do Airplay WIFI from your macbook to an AppleTV set?    Unless I assume audio is so important that youre playing youtube videos maybe thru same and need the upgraded audio from the speakers ONLY HOOKED up currently thru your bluray.
Its all wires and more boxes isnt it
Aside from the audio feeding dilema, AppleTv solves the rest of it with ease.
*** I forgot to mention or think of it, but if its an ANALOG speker system, you can get a dual connector for the back of the TV and BLURAY OUTPUT and connect / disconnect same as either can go to speaker OUTPUT and switch back and forth very easy.    $20 cost.
