IBook G4 Freezes at Apple Screen - Disc Space Full?

Hi Everyone,
First time here on Apple Discussions - thanks in advance for all the help. I have an iBook G4 (late 2004, I think). While using the computer I started seeing messages telling me that my disc space was close to full and that maybe I should eliminate programs. I also just installed new (more) RAM - I've upgraded from 256mb to 1G. Unfortunately, I updated my iTunes and then when I rebooted my system in order for changes to take effect, the computer never booted back up. Now when I press the power button I hear the start up chimes and fans but the process stalls when the gray Apple screen appears. I have tried to reset the PMU but have not had success. Any help would be much appreciated!
Thanks,
Gary

Hi Gary:
Welcome to Apple Discussions.
A too full disk is a dangerous condition, as you are discovering. You need to maintain a minimum of !5% of total capacity (5 GB on HDDs 40 GB and under) as contiguous free space for swap files and to grow the Extents Overflow file of the directory, otherwise you can end up with a very lethargic drive, and worse, directory corruption, corrupted and possibly lost data.
So, where do we go from here? I would begine with Repair Disk
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel, and report if it says anything but Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior
Please post back with an update and with any questions or comments.

  • Early October 2011 MBP freezes at apple screen

After trying to update  from 10.8.1 to 10.8.2, it tells me that it couldnt update to 10.8.2. Next boot, the system freezes at apple screen. I then try to go to disk recovery, and once in there it says Ive updated to 10.8.2. But in fact it did not let me when I ran the update.

Also... ran machine in recovery... repaired disk but no errors were found.

  • Computer freezes at Apple screen, dial stops turning after accidentally turning off computer during Migration?

Accidentally turned off my Powermac G5 in the middle of a migration from my iMac G4 and now will turn on, but stops at apple screen, dial stops moving. HELP!

    Hello,
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If the above fails, then it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...

Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.

  • IBook G4 Freezes at Blue Screen During Startup.

    iBook G4 933 MHz
    Mac OS X 10.4. Tiger
    640MB RAM
    40GB internal ATA hard drive
Computer boots but then quickly locks up.
If I immediately restart, then the iBook hangs at the blue screen before the Mac OS X progress screen appears.
If I remove the battery and unplug the power cord then allow the computer to sit for at least 30 minutes, able to fully boot, but then the machine quickly freezes up.
I assume the problem is heat related?
    I have so far:
    - Totally disassembled/reassembled
    - Reset PRAM
    - Reset NVRAM
    - Reset PMU
    - Unable to do target disk mode
    - iBook freezes same way when booting to Mac OS X install DVD
Able to boot to shell command line mode no problem.
FSCK reports no issues with the HDD.
Sometimes during startup a fan turns on briefly, but not every attempt to boot.
Yes-- I know about the 'solder' issues with iBook G4 logic boards, but I do not think the above is related. The VGA works fine.
Thanks for any assistance that can be rendered.

After a month, I have been notified by Superior Reball that the logic board has been repaired. I promptly made payment of $35 and the board was shipped back to me on June 17 via USPS Priority Mail Delivery Confirmation. I have received the tracking number and anticipate receiving the package by June 20.
In my situation, well worth the wait for only $35.
Even though I chose to totally disassemble the iBook, Superior will do the disassemble/reassemble for $75.
I would not have done it by shipping the entire iBook, though. With the higher shipping cost, insurance, having to send out the hard drive with no back up, the higher repair cost, etc.-- in the end a prohibitive expense. I could probably buy a used iBook G4 for no more than $200, to put things in perspective.
In summary, Superior Reball had a great price, good enough communication (they answer the phone, but not e-mail) and it looks like fast return shipping. It took a lot longer than the ad states, so I am applying the old 'price, speed, quality-- choose any two' rule here.

See if you can run these.
    Run fsck.
    1. Reboot/Startup holding your Command-S key down.
    2. At the command line type the following and hit 'Return.'
    /sbin/fsck -fy
    3. After it has check/repaired your disk, type 'reboot' and hit 'Return' again. Unit will bootup normally
    ======
Do an Open Firmware reset: Hold the CommandOption+OF keys during startup. At the '>' prompt type:
    reset-nvram
    Return
    set-defaults
    Return
    reset-all
    Return

  • Freezing at Apple Screen

So here's my problem...If you can help and it works, Thank you so freaking much.....If you can't, my last option is to send it in..
So, I got my IPOd a while ago and it worked great for a good amount of time..Sure the occassional reset here and there, but then one time it wouldn't reset....I plugged it into my Comp and reset it and it just stops at the Apple Screen....Dies after the battery runs low and trys again....Sometimes if I reset it enough it'll bypass the Apple Screen and start charging, saying "Do Not Disconnect"...well, when I get that I let it go and fully charge, but when I click off and stop the hardware/connection on the Computer...Unplug the USB, it automatically freezes again..and when i try and reset and EVERYTHING...it just freezes at the apple screen.
    Help? Please?

Seems your iPod's hard drive isn't functioning properly.
You might want to try checking the hard drive using Diagnostic Mode.
Here's a link for how to do that: http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/index.shtml.
Also, if you have access to another machine, PC or Mac, try connecting your iPod to that one and see if anything changes.

  • IPod Freezes at Apple Screen

Ok so i formated the ipod with Win Vista, not with iTunes, and since the format was over, it just froze at apple screen. Wont show up on computer, wont restart when i do Menu+Center button. And i can see and hear that it's trying to boot but it keeps restarting, like it's unable to.

When you say Apple screen, do you mean Apple Logo?
If so, have a look at these two articles, to give some guidance how to try to restore your ipod.

  • My iPhone will not start after new software update. Freeze on apple screen

I updated the phone software today through the new software update directly from the phone and it will not restart past the apple screen. I have tried a hard restart, no dice.
    wish I had waited.

Got it back up and working by putting in recovery mode and restoring through itunes, but lost lots of settings and app. info. I took about 4 efforts to resync after restore, not sure why, certainly not smooth or intuitive. 2 hours of my life I wish I had back.

  • IMac freezes at apple screen with spinning wheel.

Last night my iMac crashed. When I started it back up, it just stuck at the apple screen with the little spinning wheel. I took it to the Genius Bar and he said to just do a full OS reinstall.
Does anyone have any other suggestions? I just want to make sure I've covered all the bases before I delete all my stuff. I've run disk utility (from the install disk) and I've also run the Hardware check program from the install disk. Any help would be appreciated greatly.

  • Iphoto disc space full

when i go to download more photos into my library it gives me a message that my disc space for iphoto library is getting full
    what do i do?

The library is probably damaged. Try this:  make a temporary, backup copy (select the library and type Command+D) and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Powerbook G4 (12" aluminum" won't start up (freezes with apple screen up)

I'm on the road, and my Powerbook freezes during startup, with the apple on the white background, but no pinwheel. Tried starting in "Safe Mode", and it got to the pinwheel, then process bar/startup, but froze afterwards before the desktop came up. There's a blank blue screen, and occasional flashes of a pinwheel, but no desktop or mouse arrow. Any suggestions that can be done while traveling and without the startup disks (which were stupidly left at home)? Running OSX Tiger.

Find a local Apple Authorized Service Center who can help you out, tell them first before they do anything whether your data is backed up, and they'll take whatever measures you need:

  • IBook stalls at gray apple screen on start up

my sister and i are both mac lovers...recently her iBook g4 [panther] stalled on start up. It stalls out when the Apple logo comes up on the grey screen. I have searched the discussion, but found no similar posts. There is no broken folder, no pinwheel, no fan noise, no hard drive spinning, just a grey screen with the Apple logo. What to do what to do?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah I tried that and the repair fails.
It says Catalog file entry not found for extent
    Volume check failed
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972)
So then, I tried the hardware scan and everything on that comes up fine.
I then tried to firewire target disk mode and it was unable to mount on my powerbook. It gave me the option to Initialize | Ignore | Eject
The first time I ejected, the second time I did Initialize and disk util came up
I noticed that it shows 55.9 GB AAPL FireWire Target Media, but the drive below it is gray and says not mounted.
So then all efforts failed I talked it over with the sis and decided to try to reinstall without getting any files out. But when I try that and it asks which volume to install the Mac OS X software there are no volumes to select!
    I think I'm screwed.
    Help please!

  • IBook frozen at grey apple screen

I've tried zapping the pram, taking out the additional ram I installed a few days ago and also tried booting from Tech Tools, Disc Warrior and OSX boot cd's; the cd stall at the apple logo and then the logo shifts a little to the right and a line of pixels turn a different colour just above the logo. I have tried what I think is eveything. I have migrated the user account to another mac and was going to just install a new hard drive. Would this cure the problem of should i be looking at something else?

Hi Manual - Welcome to Apple Discussions
There is no need to run "fsck" since you ran Disk Utility from start up disks. Also it is safe to run.
Probably you have ruined system files by using Norton's Utilities and will need to reinstall your OSX. Many issues with Norton's are mentioned on these pages.
If you have the individual Jaguar disks, I'd run Archive and Install to see if that would get you up and running and save your personal files: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
1st be sure to follow these Apple articles:
    Troubleshooting Startup:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106464
    Isolating issues:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25392
If you do Archive and Install with your Jaguar disks and it doesn't work you will probably need to restore from your Original System and Software Disks.
If any of this doesn't make sense or if you need help in making a backup just post again to this thread.

You have a problem -- however, you may be suffering from a power supply failure, see if you serial numbers are listed in this program power supply or video and power issues, and if they are, call Apple, who will repair your machine free.

Freeze lasts for maybe 10 seconds. Occurs when I press the home button, when I use the fingerprint scanner to log in, or a few seconds after logging in.
