Ibook G4 freezes on startup   help

My Ibook G4 has been good to me for years, I try to keep it clean and up to date. A few days ago out of the blue it froze up on me. I took the battery out and tried to start up the computer. It starts to go through the motions ( white screen with the apple logo and dial spinning below, then changes to blue screen ) Once it gets to the blue screen where it normally loads OSX it just stops running and freezes everytime. Tryed to load the apple care test disc , but it does not work. The apple logo shifts to the side and the computer freezes again. I also tried to use the apple restore disc, to run a hardware test. That will load the disc and start to go through the hardware test. Once it gets to the memory portion of the test it freezes everytime. It does not say the memory portion failed it just freezes. Also trying to do a reinstall of the software does not work, it just freezes shortly after the disc starts to spin.
Any ideas would be helpfull thanks
Ibook G4 (2004)800/756 running OS 10.4.10

Let's take it a step further and reset the NVRAM. Restart and hold down the Appleoption+OF keys. Release them when you see "Welcome to Open Firmware". At the prompt type;
reset-nvram (return)
reset-all (return)
The computer will restart after pressing return the second time.

  • Freezing at Startup, Help!

Well it seems my MBPro 17" is completely frozen now at the... startup sreen? This has happened four times already and every time I've had to reinstall OSX. I'm posting now because I swear my lappytop will lose it's screen if I have to reinstall it one more time. It seems this happens when I go to Software Update and install all of the updates. I think it's being caused by the security update, but I can't tell. Whenever I turn on the MBP, all goes well until it gets to the startup screen, where it says, "Starting Mac OS X" -- it usually gets about 30 pixels of progress bar across and never more than that. booted in Sigle User mode and it checks the filesystem, everything is great except when I exit or logout of single user mode. Any ideas? I'm getting rather ****** off at all the problems, making the jump from a 933MHz iBook and 1.6GHz PowerMac G5 to this... hot-tempered, stubborn MacBook Pro. Thanks

    Hi ismith,
If your freeze is not related to the Acrobat or Version Cue thingy, chances are (I speculate), the Intel version of Mac OS X is not as stable as the PPC version. I have experience problems not seen on the PPC version. The Finder on the Intel version is more screwy.
Anyway, I had a startup freeze a few days about. I posted for help and not real help came. The usual safe mode, repair blah, blah, blah did nothing. I knew Archive and Install was my final remedy. But I chose not to do it. Instead, I did Upgrade when I popped in the Mac OS X Restore DVD that came with my week 19 MBP (10.4.6). After upgrading, Sofware Update prompted me to install the Security Update and I chose to ignore. My Mac is running as normal now without any reinstallation of software.
Oh well, do it at your own risk.

  • IBook G4 Freezes at Startup Window or gives Blank Blue Screen

Ok, so I realize my description is long, but I've been going through these forums gleaning off the wisdom of the past...and so here's what I've tried
    Description of Problem:
    1. Computer froze, had to be shut down by holding down power button
    2. On restart, goes to apple pages with status wheel (looks like turning gear). But then either freezes on that page, or more frequently goes to a blank light blue screen.
    3. Tried restarting from install CD, ends in blank light blue screen.
    4. Restarted holding option, tried to restart from a firewire clone of the drive, ends in blank light blue screen.
    5. DId a reset to firmware, typed in two lines of code as found on discussion board, it restarted, no effect.
    TARGET FIREWIRE
Opened computer as target firewire drive
    6. used disk utility to repair, there was nothing to repair.
    7. Used DiskWarrior to rebuild.
    8. Backed up drive using superduper
    UNMOUNTED FIREWIRE
    9. No change
HELP???? This computer is NOT under AppleCare anymore.

This EXACT thing has just happened to me!
    It is a 12 inch ibook G4.
I am hoping it will come back up one more time so that I can transfer it to a Terra server I have here in the lab.
I am wondering what I am going to do...

  • IBook acting/freezing up. HELP!

my iBook first was saying something about the clock being a date in 1969 and I need to reset. now it will not show the top right items of the menu bar; the airport, the clock, sound, etc. So NO INTERNET. and CONTINUALLY SPINS. something is really really off.
I did a basic restart, ran disc first aid, to no avail. I did the network diagnostics to reset airport, to no avail. It will not even let me change the clock time in system preferences.
    What can I do???

    Hey Geoff,
how do you reboot from the original system disc?
Insert the disc and hold down the "C" key while booting up or hold down the option key at boot and select the disc.
    The original disc is:
the the disc that came with it originally?
Yes. These are Gray with white lettering.
    what is the retailer installer?
A retail installer is a generic disc that will install on any appropriate computer. They're black with silver lettering. That's what you'd get if you bought Leopard at the Apple store.

  • Ibook Freeze while typing: help

My Ibook regularly freezes (no answer at all from the computer, I must restart it with the start key) and it always happens when I am typing (it can be in various program). It did it on OsX 10.2.8 and continues to do it on OsX 10.4.2
This Ibook already benefits of the Logic Board Repair Program from apple in 2004 (I bought it in april 2003).
Any suggestions and comments are welcomed !!

Hi, Matthieu. Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Try booting into Safe Mode. This will take awhile longer than a normal startup because it does a file check and repair of the hard disk.
If this works you will see your normal desktop. Once completely started up, restart normally, and go to Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility and repair permissions on the hard drive.
See if a little hard drive maintenance helps things out.
Every time you have to do a forced shutdown instead of a normal one, there is a chance of hard drive damage and you should repair the hard drive, either by booting into Safe Mode or starting up from the Mac OS X Install Disk by inserting the disk and restarting your computer holding down the C key at the end of the startup chime. Then choose Installer>Open Disk Utility and select the disk in the left column. Click First Aid. Click Repair Disk to test and repair the hard drive. Once you have repaired the hard drive with either Safe Mode or the Install CD's Disk Utility, then start up normally and repair permissions from Disk Utility in the Utilities folder on your hard drive.

Updated from Leopard to Snow Leopard, then upgraded to Lion, now my system is freezing on startup. Can anyone help?

Try a Safe Boot: Restart holding down the shift key until you (hopefully) see a grey progress bar. Once booted restart as normal from the Apple menu. Any change?
How much RAM do you have installed?

Hi, my illustrator CS5 freezes at startup. It was working properly till last friday, now i cannot open it. ¿can somebody help me?

    Leo,
You may try the list (5) being less likely).
The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file, and when it is not caused by issues with opening a file from external media. You may have tried/done some of them already; 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
If possible/applicable, you should save current artwork first, of course.
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to at least 5 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible), for CS3 - CC you may find the folder here:
    https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/kb/preference-file-location-illustrator.html
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall (ticking the box to delete the preferences), run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

  • I have a MacBook Pro, it recently started freezing upon startup. It would get to a blue screen and just sit there. I've tried booting in safemode to run disk repair and still doesnt help. If I do manage to get past the blue screen, it still freezes

My mac keeps freezing upon startup. It will get to the blue screen and promptly freeze. If I manage to get past the blue screen, and open up youtube on google chrome, it will freeze before it loads youtube. I've tried safeboot and disk repair, nothing seems to work. I even tried to factory reset it but it wont connect to my internet when I reboot with power + option.. any ideas?

This can be used to boot the machine and delelte enough files to get it to boot normally.

  • IBook is freezing, help help.

ok, so i have had my ibook for about two years now. i was running 10.3.9 and problem free. i had replaced a logic board a year ago and some bad memory. other than that i am good to go.
about two months ago my ibook started freezing. i didn't get kernel panics telling me to restart. the mouse icon would freeze(the color wheel would stop , or the hand would be stuck as the hand icon) and i could not access my dock. however, with an ethernet cable i was still able to bridge the internet from the ibook to my desktop computer.(which is how i am online right now) it will start up fine and won't freeze if i have it on and run nothing. sometimes it runs for a while without freezing. but then sometimes it freezes right away.
i reinstalled 10.3 hoping a clean install would clear it up, but no such luck. i ran the hardware test also, and everything came out passing. anyone have any suggestions?

also, i would like to note that my iSight still gave out video of me moving around after my desktop had frozen. which i could not really explain? and the monitor dims still and puts up the screen saver, even if it is frozen.

  • My ibook is freezing

my ibook is freezing up. It usually happens when i'm moving it around. Any suggestions as to why it is freezing?

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Try booting into Safe Mode. This will take quite awhile longer than a normal startup because it does a file check and repair of the hard disk.
You will see your normal desktop. Once completely started up in Safe Mode, restart normally, and go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Click on the top hard drive icon in the left sidebar and note the S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom right of the pane. What does it say?
Select the named boot volume in the left sidebar, ("Macintosh HD" unless you've renamed it). What is the hard drive capacity and how much space remains available on it? Repair permissions on it.
See if a little hard drive maintenance helps things out.
If you have questions in the future, you may want to try posting in the iBook G4 Forum.
You have posted in the iBook G3 (Dual USB) Forum.

  • OS 10.4 freeze on startup

My iBook G4 is freezing on startup:
After pushing the power button, the gray screen appears with the MAC logo, then the spinning gray/black wheel begins it's cycle, then stops spinning after approximately 30 seconds, then the whole system/computer shuts itself down.
    Please help.......thanks a million
Note: I have recently encountered a battery issue which has the battery yielding about 25 minutes of power before shutting down.
Also do not have my startup disc any longer.....strike 2

While the battery may very well be the cause; I am inclined to think you have a Kernel issue. The spinning gear is a visual que to the kernel loading. If that process does not complete and you never get to a blue screen (the blue screen seen just before the loginwindow launches), then the kernel is not completing its initialization. Haver you tried a boot into verbose or safe mode?
If you are unfamiliar with booting into such modes, additional resources can be found at:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107393
While the safe mode may not do the trick, you can try verbose mode by holding keys: command + V immediately after starting your machine. While verbose mode may get you started, it is always risky when you are in single user mode -- so be careful and consult resources, such as the Apple Knowledgebase.
    On a last note, if it is a battery issue; one other soultion might be a reset on the Power Management Unit: you can achieve such a reset by skimming through the following resource;
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
--remember to read through the entire document and attempt to pick out the procedure that matches your machine.
    Hope that helps

  • Premiere Elements 3 Freezes on startup in Windows 7

I just loaded Premiere Elements 3 on a laptop with Windows 7 and it freezes on startup. I can't find any reference to drivers for Windows 7. I've used PE3 satisfactorily with Windows XP and want to continue to use it. Does anyone have a solution that doesn't involve upgrading to a later version or switching to another video editing program? I've already uninstalled and reinstalled.

Thanks for all three responses. Long story short: I've made progress to where Premiere Elements 7 now freezes *after* startup in Windows 7.
Neale: It's Windows Home Premium on a Sony VGN-NW270F with an Intel Core2 Duo T6600 2.2 GHz processor, with 4GB of memory. I hope this additional information is helpful in diagnosing my problems with PE3 version 3.02 and Windows 7.
Steve: I found I already had PE3 Version 3.02, so that was not the problem. However, I did uninstall and re-install, with no better results. I then poked around in the Windows 7 Help files and stumbled across the misnamed "Compatibility Manager" (it's really an "Incompatibility Manager"). When I set PE3 to run under XP Service Pack 2, PE3 finally started up. I then found I could load video files and edit them. But, after working on this for a few days, I tried to use the Transitions and Effects Button. That invariably sends PE3 off to La La Land, which only a power off will fix (I haven't had to power off so many times since I used Windows 95 and the early DOS systems, which doesn't seem like progress.)  So far, I haven't found a solution to this new freeze problem. Any suggestions as to what might make PE3 work properly?
You say that PE3 is a relatively old version of the program. Well, not that old -- "old" programs dated 2007 should work on operating systems released only two years later. However, I haven't upgraded from PE3 because it worked really well on my XP machine and subsequent releases of PE appear to be buggy. From what I've read in the Forum here, I wouldn't upgrade to PE8 because even that version doesn't seem to work well with Windows 7. I've wasted enough time on this already.
John: Unfortunately, I just have Windows 7 Home Premium, the plain vanilla OS.  So far, I am thoroughly unimpressed with Windows 7. New operating systems are supposed to bring advantages, not be incapable of running programs that ran under previous operating systems.
    Thanks,
    George

  • Acrobat Reader 9.1.x freezes after startup

    Hello,
Our Acrobat Reader is having problems on some machines during startup that it completly freezes after startup.
I've traced this with procmon and have seens that a certain file "sharedEvents" is trying to to somthing buth it is hanging on
lock - unlock. Killing All process of Acrobat Reader and deleting this file and then re-starting the program isn't helping because it keeps 0 kb and the mentioned behaviour is trying to do something with this file.
the file can be found in %appdata%\adobe\acrobat\9.0
Our profile's is redirected , it is working for most of the users but some users are having this problem.
Can anybody tell me what Acrobat Reader is doing with this file and is there a work around to initialize everything back again so the
user can startup the program normally so it is not freezing after startup without having to remove and install it back again ?
    Best regards,
    Bert

    Hi,
The problem I'm having is a problem on the journal file. After some more investigating it look that the problem can be related to oplocks since we have enbaled oplocks on our server (were the file is placed trough folder redirection). We will check this ...
I've already disabled oplocks on client side and then everything is working however we are using Vista in combination with offline files and if you disbale oplocks then offline files will not work so we are looking a bith further to see what we can do on server side ... to be continued ...
    Best regards,
    Bert
