Ibook G4 halfway recognizing ram

Hey I'm just wondering if my ram is working in my 1.42 ghz (supposed to be 1.5 gb ram) ibook g4. So sometimes when I pull up the "about this mac" and check it it recognizes the ram that I put in (yes its the right type) and says "1.5 mb ddr sdram". before, when i didnt have any ram in it just had the "512 built in" for ram. but now most of the time it says 512 mb ddr sdram. So it halfway recognizes that there is ram (mb ddr sdram) but its not saying 1.5. The guy at the apple store said it may be the ram or the logic board. I'm thinking maybe its the logic board. So I'm not sure if the ram is working or nott. heelp .

Okay so I did that and it still said 512 ddr sd ram. So then I restarted the computer after and it froze on the white screen. So then i turned it off and then rebooted and it said correctly 1.5 like its supposed to BUT it's done this before (if there's a freeze and i turn the computer suddenly off it will load with the correct ram) and it will only last if a couple boot ups and go back to saying 512. Hopefully this cured the issue, otherwise I guess its just the logic board but thanks for the help!

  • IBook loses 512mb of ram!!!

I have a 14" iBook 1.33GHz with 1.25 GHz of DDR SDRAM... Now my problem about a week ago my ibook completely froze... so i rebooted it and when i came back 512mb of ram just dissappeared. So i removed it and reinserted it and it was fine for a bit.. then it froze again and the profiler says that i only have 768mb of ram but it is 1ghz chip in the expansion slot and the 256mb that came with the machine. It also fails the power on test when booting. Has anyone else ran into this before? Or know of a way to fix this. I havent had any problems with the ram before this and i have had the ram for about 10 months.
(the problem also started showing up shortly after i updated to 10.4.5.)

Baltar27, Welcome to the discussion area!
    The choices are:
    The RAM isn't installed properly.
    Perhaps it is coming loose?
    The RAM is
defective. Have you used the hardware test disc that
came with your iBook to test the RAM?
    The
    iBook's motherboard is defective.
Thanx for the info. I forgot about the hardware test disc. The Ram that i bought has a lifetime warranty... so if its just the ram i can send it back and then they can just send me a new chip.
But if the There is something wrong with the motherboard than I hope that it would be covered in my applecare plan. The iBook is only like 12 months old.
I will do a hardware test and check back.... thanx again for replying

  • Ibook not recognizing RAM

ok, so my brothers laptop has the 256 MB built in, then it came with another 256 Stick in it, however, it said that the computer only had 256 (which was the built in), so we replaced the RAM stick with another 256, and it still isnt' recognizing it, still says just 256 built in... what is goin on here?

i know the RAM is good, becuase i bought a new stick for mine (identical laptops) and i gave him my old working one, i just bought a 512 instead of a 256 that it came with, so i am sure that the RAM is good, we don't have a bootable disc, cuz we got em from a school and all they gave us were the laptops and the power adapters. so ya, it isn't really worth it to replace the logic board in them, cuz one of em, the logic board was crap, and so we bought 4 and only have 3 working ones, so, if it is the logic board, consider this question answered.

  • IBook TrackPad not recognized in System Prefs?

    Hello,
I have the Mid-2005 1.42ghz iBook. It's a great machine that I love except for one thing....the scrolling TrackPad. It does not work and is not recognized in System Preferences. It does not show up under Keyboard & Mouse. I've taken the top-case off to check the cables and they all looked tight and even replaced the top-case with a new one and it still doesn't work. I've used the 10.4.4 Tiger install discs as that is what it was shipped with. I'm out of ideas here and am hoping that someone can help me. I've resorted to using a mouse along side of it and it's aggravating. Please don't tell me "Logic Board Replacement." Thanks!

    Hey PM and Cornelius,
Well the first thing that comes to mind is that the track pad, keyboard, power and charger are all controlled by that PMU99 that I've been bugging everyone about.
    Here's my other post:
"There's been a lot of problems lately on this group with the above mentioned issues. It could be a PMU problem. The PMU is actually a tiny computer within the computer. It's official designation is PMU99.
    http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Hardware/DeveloperNotes/Macintosh_CPUs-G4/12inchPowerBookG4/2_Architecture/chapter_3_section4.html
    "Power Control IC
The power manager IC in the 12-inch PowerBook G4 is a Mitsubishi M16C/62F microprocessor, also called the PMU99. It operates with its own RAM and ROM. The functions of the PMU99 include:
*controlling the sleep and power on and off sequences
    *real time clock
*controlling power to the other ICs
    *monitoring the battery charge level
    *controlling battery charging
*supporting the interface to the built-in keyboard ( and trackpad )
The 12-inch PowerBook G4 can operate from a 15-volt power outlet on an airliner, however for safety reasons the computer will not allow battery charging. In order for the computer to detect the connection to airline power, the airline power cable should have a sense resistor of 24.3K ohms connected between the power plug's shell and ground.
The PMU99 also provides the hardware interface to the keyboard. Software in the PMU99 IC scans the keyboard, then sends the data to the system in packets like those from the ADB. To the system, the keyboard behaves as if they were ADB devices"
    Try resetting it:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
If that doesn't work try what I call a deep PMU reset.
Pull all power including the battery, push the power button to remove residual charge in soft start capacitors.
Then walk away from it for at least 10 hours.
Now PMU99 has been responsible for soft start in Macs apparently since the first G3s and run all the way thru the G5s. From:
    http://www.theapplemuseum.com/index.php?id=30
    "Power Macintosh G3/G4/G5 clock/softstart chip: PMU99"
So this deep reset has worked for G3s going back to the Beige and recently a G4 Sawtooth with a 1.5 GB CPU upgrade.
I've also seen problems with the super capacitors that sort of take the place of the PMU battery but that has been on older G3s. These are there to hold settings during battery swaps and not sure what else. I've seen two go open but am not sure what that would mean to all the PMU functions. If it shorted I could see that as a real problem."

  • IBooks Author stopped recognizing my iPad

Hello everyone, ibooks author stopped letting me publish a preview to my iPad. When I click on preview, it doesn't show any devices attached. iTunes can see my iPad (and iPhone for that matter). Any ideas?
I've seen similair forums, but the key difference is iBooks Author let me publish previews in the past. However it doesn't recognize my iPad (or iPhone). I know my MacBook is recognizing them (as they show up in iTunes and in the finder).
    Help?

It's been that way for me for a while now...works when it wants
The alternative, of course, is to Share/Export as an .ibooks file, then drop into iTunes, then sync.

  • Will Snow Leopard change the amount of recognized RAM?

Or is my 06' MBP 2.16GHz still limited by hardware? Just kinda of struck me today, and got me to wondering.

    LeSpensive wrote:
So it is the hardware limitation? I'm wanting to max out my RAM, and upgrade to a 7200RPM drive. I figure that will give me a decent speed boost. How hard is it to swap drives? I need to clone the original to copy over to the new drive.
It's more or less a hardware limitation. Some of max memory specs are firmware limitations.
Maxing out you RAM is a good idea, but you're still stuck with a max 4 GB RAM installed and 3.2 GB used. I would think later models that currently can run an unofficial 6 GB won't get any kind of firmware update.
Cloning is easy. The hard drive swap may be a bit harder. It's not so hard that I wouldn't try myself if I had one (I refuse to try on an iBook) but it's more involved than a polycarbonate MacBook or any of the new unibody MacBook/MacBook Pro models.

    Hey Daniel,
First it would be helpful to know exactly which iBooks you're talking about.
CPU speed, screen size, OS and RAM installed.
So how do you know the all three have onboard RAM issues? Does system profiler just show the 0 slot as empty?

  • Early 2005 G5 not recognizing RAM, optical door not opening

    Hi,
I recently received a Power Mac G5, Early 2005, Dual Core 2.0 GHz, 1 GB RAM, 250 GB HD, running OS 10.5.8.
I decided to invest in this machine, so I ordered a paired 1 GB RAM (for a total of 2 GB RAM) from OWC. Then when trying to install software, I found the computer's optical drive door does not open at all. I could hear the optical drive trying to open but figured it was old and defective/worn out. So I also ordered a new optical drive from OWC. I also made sure to order the correct screws that OWC recommended for the optical drive too, as my original optical drive was a Sony and I saw there are some issues with the screws or height.
I installed the 2 x 1 GB paired RAM, and the G5 is not recognizing the RAM. In System Profiler, the slots show as empty. The RAM did not really click in like other RAM I have installed on my PowerBook G4, my former G3 Beige, and my former Power PC 6100. The hinges on the sides closed but not quite all the way, so I figure OWC sent me the wrong RAM and removed them before RAM issues start. I also noticed the RAM is slightly taller in height next to the original RAM.
The new optical drive installed fine, with the proper screws. However when I try to open it using the "eject" on the keyboard, the optical drive does try to open but the exterior door on the G5 case itself is not opening. It does show up in the System Profiler. When I had the G5 open and no optical drive installed, I doublechecked the exterior optical drive door with my finger, and it would open from the inside of the case poking my finger out, but not from the outside poking in.
Also, I noticed that the Model Identifier doesn't quite match up with the specs at OWC, Crucial, or elsewhere. According to the specs I should have 7,2, not 7,3? I ran the serial number at the Dutch website and also here at Apple, and both have said Early 2005. Is this why I may have the wrong RAM?
    Model Name: Power Mac G5
    Model Identifier: PowerMac7,3
    Processor Name: PowerPC G5 (3.1)
    Processor Speed: 2 GHz
    Number Of CPUs: 2
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Thanks in advance for your help and advice.

The RAM should fit then, it does snap in, but not always easily!
I couldn't get the last pair in until I laid the box on its side. For some reason, when it was upright I couldn't get the DIMMs to fully engage the socket. Zero insertion force it definitely ain't!
I see the OWC price is now about $3 lower than our local good supplier down here. I'll limp along on what I have in the machine now; it seems to work pretty well and three days after maintenance (DW, of course) and reboot, I still have zero page outs, which is a good sign, I guess.

This depends on the exact model. (There is no such thing as a 2.1 mhz iBook.) If it's the Late 2004 model (as stated):
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/ibook/stats/ibook_g4_1.33_14.html
then the maximum RAM is 1.25 GB, accomplished by adding a 1 GB module in the one user-accessible RAM slot.

  • MBP isn't recognizing RAM

Just got a new MBP 13" and I'm trying to install 8GB RAM. It's only recognizing one slot's 4GB card though. Are there any adjustments or settings I need to mess around with?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Nope. You got the wrong RAM, or RAM that is bad quality, or your machine doesn't support that much in the same slot. See my FAQ*:

  • IBook G4 not recognizing external drive

I have an iBook G4 w/OS10.3.9. Up until the past couple of days, I have been able to regularly backup my internal drive to both my Iomega and Maxtor USB drives. Now when I connect them, I either get a message indicating that they are not readable and asking if I want to format or ignore, or they just don't show up on the desktop. They work fine on my Macbook Pro w/Leopard. I also just ran Disk Warrior as well as defragging and repairing w/Drive Genius. Still is not working. The name of the drive will show up on Disk Utilities, but the verify and repair buttons are not highlighted. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • IBook is now recognizing files as PC files.  Help?

    Hello,
Any help anyone could give me would be really appreciated. I am trying to update a friends very old iBook G3 to OSX. I shouldn't be doing this as I know hardly anything about it - I'll admit that right off. I managed to get it from 8.6 up to 9.2.1. I can't connect this computer to the internet (long story) so I've been burning the updates from my mac onto a CD or flash drive and then bringing them over that way. This worked fine until I got to 9.2.1 and then suddenly it recognizes all files on disks or flash drives that I import as PC files and won't run them. What did I do? Yikes. Thanks in advance for any help you can give! - Kate
    ibook   Mac OS 9.2.x   G3 300 mHz

    Hi, Kate -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
    • Make sure that the File Exchange control panel is active in Extensions Manager, and that all these files are physically present in the Extensions folder (in System Folder) -
    Apple Photo Access
    Audio CD Access
    Foreign File Access
    ISO 9660 File Access
    UDF Volume Access
    • Make sure the media being used to transfer the files (CD or flash drive) has been formatted in a Mac format (such as Mac OS Extended or Mac OS Standard, as applicable). Media that has been formatted as ISO9660 or other non-Mac format may alter a file.
    • If the Mac being used to download the files is running OSX, then be sure to transfer the original form of the download to the older Mac - that is, do not decompress/decode the download on the Mac running OSX and then transfer that copy. Reason - OSX does not depend upon the File Type and Creator codes that OS 9 does, and those codes may not then survive decompression/decoding on that machine.
    • Try rebuilding the desktop file on the older Mac. After several OS updates, the desktop file may not have caught up with the changes. Rebuilding the desktop will force it to do that.
To rebuild the desktop safely, restart - immediately hold down the Shift key until you get the "Extensions Off" message; then release Shift and hold down the Command and Option keys until you get the splash screen asking if you want to rebuild the desktop; click yes (or okay). Once that's done, restart to turn your extensions back on.
    <hr>
General setup things for OS 9.2.x -
Make sure the following are turned on in Extensions Manager: Apple Guide; Security Library; Security Manager; Shared Library Manager; Shared Library Manager PPC. Add more memory to General Controls control panel (via the Get Info submenus); doubling the Preferred amount is good.
Make sure the Multiprocessing folder is present in Extensions, per this Apple Kbase article -
Article #25048 - Mac OS: Do Not Remove Multiprocessing Folder
    <hr>
Given the multiple updates and hence the possiibiity of redundant files, check in the Text Encodings folder in System Folder - there should be exactly 15 files in that folder, all of version 1.6 (matching the version of the Text Encoding Converter extension). If there are any duplicates, remove them.

  • Macbook Pro not recognizing RAM

    I have a late 2007 Macbook Pro.
    2.33 ghtz
    500 gig HD
    2 gig RAM
I checked the specs, and spoke with AppleCare (while AppleCare was still in effect) about my RAM being upgraded to 4 gigs, as it is listed as being able to support, and the AppleCare technicians I spoke to informed me this was okay to do.
I upgraded to the 4 gigs, and everything installed perfectly, and runs fine.  However, with mutiple apps open, she would start to bog down.
From checking "About This Mac" both 2 gig sticks are installed and being used.
From Activity Monitor, I only have 3 gigs.
From iStat Pro I only have 3 gigs.
I know that some older models could only handle 3 gigs, but this machine is past that window (so I was told by the computer, and AppleCare), and I was wondering if anyone knew of a reason this would have happened.
Of course my AppleCare has since expired, and eventually I'll be getting a newer model, but since this machine still runs circles around anyone elses PC I know, I see no reason to just get rid of her.  I would just like to solve this little mystery first.
Any advice or info will be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

According to MacTracker that is expected. May have something to do with Duo cores, but a 64 bit processor should be able to address all 4 GB and them some, but 32 bit processor can only address a bit over 3 GB even though 4 GB of RAM are installed.
