IBook G4 Harddrive eating itself....

Traded for an iBook G4 (1.33, 60GB HD, etc)-I did an archive and install of Tiger with a retail version in order to salvage some programs HD. After do the re-install I noticed that the HD was almost full. I took a look around and found 5 previous installations so I deleted them all, since they seemed to be just OS installations. Odd, I thought. I also did a Trash empty that turned up over 200k items. Odd, also. That freed up 35GB of HD space. Figured that had been part of the problem, no one had ever emptied the trash.
Since then I am still having kernel panics and just plain shutdowns and even keyboard weirdness. Played with it some today and found that the HD had filled back up to 45GB or so in just an hour or two. BTW, the HD passes all the repair diagnostics.
What would be causing the HD to just fill up rapidly like that? I might have to do a complete re-install anyway, to heck with the programs I will lose.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
JB

I suppose, but that would be an awful lot of messages....
I bit the bullet and did the erase and install, tired of messing with it.

  • Songs disappear from itunes library - and from the harddrive - by itself. One song here and there, not entire albums. Have been surfing on the web, and can see that many people have this problem. What is the solution?

I'm deeply worried. About to digitalize my entire CD collection, but can't continue until this problem is solved, or i'll risk slowly loosing my music. Song by song. Discovered the problem while browsing the Itunes library, when I realised that for example song number 2 and 11 was missing from one album, and 4 and 7 from another album. Very strange. When browsing the when I found lots of people experiencing the same. I'm using the 2011 Macbook Pro, and the Itunes library is on the Macbook Pro harddrive.
    Hope someone can help....

just want to add that i use Itunes 10.4.1. But I can see that users have problems with many versions.

  • IBooks Author versions eating disk space

    Hello
running iBooks Author Version 2.2 on Yosemite 10.10.3
It seems that the automatic saving does not save only the changes to the project, but the whole project every time.
On a big project that consumes GBs of disk space.
In earlier versions of iBooks Author you were able to delete non used versions from within the App:
Why is iBooks Author using up my scratch disk space?
I found out where the versions are saved (in a hidden folder where you have no privilegies).
I gave myself the privilegies needed and deleted 1 of the earlier versions...
    Not a good idea...
If i go to File -> Revert (maybe bad translation from German) the App hangs an blocks the whole system...
Has anybody found a solution to recover disk space used by iBooks Author versioning?

Your computer but....are  you working on a network at the school or in your home with  your own  net connection?
Networks have exclusions set  by the IT department to prevent misuse.
A book exported to PDF , should  show teh  book content , albeit, slighty different to what your see in iBA or iBooks when previewed.  Again, it  if you are on a network, there may be issues.
Run a text with a default template saved from iBA and see what the result  is.

  • IBook tried to kill itself

I closed my iBook like always and it went to sleep.
I went out for 5 hours and when I got home my iBook fan was running at full speed and the sleep light was off. I don't know if this was for a few minutes or hours.
When I opened the iBook there was a blank/black screen and no response to mouse or keyboard. The iBook disipates heat through the keyboard and is not supposed to be able to stay on with the top closed.
I wonder how many years of life was taken off its life expectancy tonight.
I will do a complete hardware check from the startup disk and see what if anything is reported... even though I just did that a week ago.
    Has anyone else experienced this?

LOL, a suicidal ibook, that $ucks...
Athough the blank screen is weird, was the ibook
plugged in when you left it? The ibbok sometimes
turns back on when the charger is taken out, or
plugged in, even if the lid is closed... So if there
was a cut in electricity at your place, that could've
waken the ibook up, are your clocks still on the
    correct time?...
    I don't beleive you've lost much/any of youre ibooks
lifetime, how hot was it when you came home?
    Hope it won't happen again...
    Regards
    C
    Hiya:
The iBook was plugged in THEN put to sleep. It wasn't disturbed in any way. No power fluctuations (My daughter was home and said nothing like that happened). It was hot to the touch.
Something else I noticed... I used the iBook for a while last night after this happend and shut it down, plugged it in, and this morning it was still charging. It usually only takes about 3-4 hours from a flat battery but it took almost 8 hours to charge from a 1/3 charged battery. It did eventualy charge though.

  • Ibook freezes on startup

Hi, my ibook has had a bit of trouble lately. The screen started to go black on startup, but pressing the f5 key, or other keys near it, made the screen appear and then continue with startup. The next time i tried to startup and the same thing happened but it stalled on the grey screen, with the swirling icon. I tried to reset PMU, that didn't work. I tried to startup using the cd and then run disk first aid. no errors were found. Then it refused to start up using the cd or hard disk. WHAT AM I DOING WRONG?
    cheers

I am having all of the same problems. I am kinda
assuming that it is my harddrive. Ive tried
everything, and when i check my disk utility it also
says that i have no errors. My biiig problem is that
i cannot even boot up in safe mode!!... why wont it
    let me??
Try booting into open firmware. Hold down simultaneously Cmd Opt O F after the start up tone. At the command line interface type in reset-nvram and hit enter. type in reset-all and again hit enter. Your Ibook will now reboot itself and reset the NVRAM to the default values.
If your Ibook fails to boot into open firmware you are looking at a serious hardware issue. ie your logic board is toast.

  • IBook logs off when I change the volume or try to restart

My iBook has been logging itself off every time I try to change the volume using F4 or F5 or when I try to restart from the Apple logo. I tried to run a virus scan and it came up with no viruses found. This problem started a week ago and may possibly have come from a virus from a Word document. Has anyone else had this problem? Or does anyone know how to fix this?

    Hi,
Try reinstalling the HP OSD Utility on the following link.
    http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp55001-55500/sp55152.exe
After this has completed, restart the notebook.

  • When I error check my Pages-created epub, I get the error code "undeclared prefix: ibooks." How do I resolve this error?

I'm creating an epub with Pages for upload to various sites. When I error check the epub, I get only one error message: "undeclared prefix: ibooks." The file itself works perfectly and looks fantastic when I open it directly from my computer/ipad with numerous Mac-compatible reading apps. However, I have no idea what distortions this "error" will cause when the epub is uploaded and redistributed. Has anyone else had this problem? If so, did it create problems in distribution? Or is it irrelevant? Thanks for any practical and straight forward answers and/or suggestions.

Based on that, it does sound like the sites you were having problems with had to do with filenames, not this error.  I can imagine a site running a standard EPUB verifier, and if any errors at all are thrown rejecting the file, but practically speaking an unknown META tag (what's causing this error) should be ignored by the parser and therefore by definition be harmless.
I was using a free Java-based checker myself, and the fact that I managed to clear up the error indicates to me (unless I'm remembering wrong or misunderstood what fixed it in my case) that it's probably not technically the EPUB checker's failure to recognize the Apple META property; more accurately, it's that the XML dictionary the file is referencing doesn't include the Apple items in it, so the EPUB checker is correctly complaining about it.
It could also be something as simple as Pages generating a file that is marked as an EPUB v2 file but that uses EPUB v3 features (I know my book was intended to be v3, and I could have inadvertently used headers for v2).
Regardless, if the sites accept it, there's a good chance it is okay; DRM, at least, isn't going to change anything--only if an e-reader changes its EPUB parser at some point and breaks something, which seems unlikely.
However, the best way to find out if it's going to work right is to test it.  Kindle is far and away the most popular reader, so try it with that and see if it comes out looking how you expect.  You should be able to view it in the Kindle application, and there is also a Kindle simulatior available from Amazon that lets you see how an e-paper Kindle will render books without having to buy one.  They have very limited EPUB support as far as features go, so it's definitely worth testing even if there are no errors--a lot of things iBooks will display just fine a Kindle will choke on.  The older e-paper Nooks, in my experience, are even worse.

    System Software Overview:
    System Version: Mac OS X 10.3.9 (7W98)
    Kernel Version: Darwin 7.9.0
    Boot Volume: Hard Drive
I recently purchased a used iBook G3. The computer itself is in EXCELLENT condition, however, I am unable to do anything with the current OS. (OS X 10.3.9)
I would like to get the computer set up on the newest version of iTunes (8.2.1) since I have an iPhone and I use iTunes as my primary media player. I would also like to utilize the newest version of Safari which I believe is v.4, and add Windows Office.
I normally use a newer Sony VAIO and I have always used and been extremely pleased with PC. I am not entirely sure I would like to continue on with any of the Mac operating systems (I am not even sure if i have the hardware capabilities to advance my software... Am I correct in my understanding that my iBook will not be able to run any MAC OS version higher than Tiger?)
The VAIO that I currently have runs off of Windows XP-- that is what I am most comfortable with. With that being said, is it possible to set up Windows XP on my iBook? I have heard of using Apple's BootCamp, but I want to know what the best option is and also how likely will it be that I can get MS Windows Xp or XP Pro running as my primary OS.
So basically here are my questions:
    (1) Do I have the hardware capabilities to run either Mac OS X Tiger (or higher version) OR Windows XP or XP Pro?
    (2) Is it possible to set up Windows XP or XP Pro on my iBook using Bootcamp? If not, what would you recommend?
    (3) Optional: Since I am a student, money is tight. What do you feel the cheapest option would be, and would it be worth my time?
I purchased the iBook so that I could carry it to class and to the library etc. so that it would be easier to take notes because of portability.. I don't play games or do anything besides take notes, browse the net, listen to music, take photos and sync my iPhone...
I would greatly appreciate any advice..

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
I just about cry when I read that someone is evaluating Macs and the Mac OS on the basis of a six-year-old iBook (with 128 MB of RAM, no less).
You're right; Tiger (Mac OS X 10.4) is as high as you can go with the iBook. Mac OS 10.5 requires a newer Mac.
You need to upgrade the RAM with a 512 MB RAM module in the one user available RAM slot in order to run Mac OS X 10.4. It takes a 3.3 V, PC100 or PC133 compliant, 1.25 inch SDRAM SO-DIMM. Instructions for installing it can be found here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=111918
Tiger requires a minimum of 256 MB of RAM, and will run much better with the 640 MB it will have after installing the 512 MB module. (In fact, Mac OS X 10.3.9 will run a lot better with the RAM maximized, too.)
Boot Camp only works with a Mac that has an Intel processor (such as a newer MacBook). There is no way to satisfactorily run Windows on the iBook. Sorry.
The iBook is also limited by its wimpy USB 1.1 ports. Anything done over USB takes much, much longer than it does with a computer which has USB 2.0 ports. The iPhone lists USB 2.0 as part of its system requirements.
iTunes 8.2.1 requires a minimum of Mac OS X 10.4.10.
Microsoft Office is a pricey piece of software, and you won't be able to run the latest version of it with a G3 processor. Can you get by with something else, such as AppleWorks (which would have come pre-installed on the iBook) or Open Office (which is free)?
If you're wanting to use it wirelessly on the internet when on campus and it doesn't have an original AirPort Card installed, you're probably going to want one of those.
I'm not sure what you mean when you say you can't do anything with Mac OS X 10.3.9. What exactly are you trying to do?

  • IBook G4 (Jun 2005 model) Logic Board Problem (No Display and HDD noise)

    Hello All
I have been using my iBook G4 (1.2 GHz) with no problems since I purchased it in June 05. But over the past 2 days, I have been noticing this weird incident of "no display" when booted and I was hearing a loud fan noise at times and I can hear my HDD spinning etc. When I tried to restart pressing CTRL+OPTION and POWER after shutting it down, it booted up but reverted my PMU to a date in 2001 (resetting all my email, music etc). But when I tried shutting it down again and restarted normally, I heard the bootup chime but no display. Again, I could hear the fan and the HDD spinning.
I took my laptop to the Apple Store here in Boca, FL today and was told that its a logic board problem.
I know there was a Logic Board Repair Initiative from Apple for the G3's and early G4's. Does anyone know such a thing for the fairly recent iBook G4's??.
    Any help is immensely appreciated.
    Thanks

    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

How do I verify that my issue is a logic board issue. Recently, computer froze. Tried a hard reboot but no luck. It either shows a blank blue screen or I'll get the grey screen and apple with the start-up spinner but it'll stop spinning.
That's it. I'm able to browse the contents of the iBook's harddrive when I connect it to my Ti Powerbook via Target Disk mode. I even lauched Disk Utility from the powerbook and verified the iBook's drive and it found no problems.
Could it be the same logic board issues that you guys are having? How do I verify this? Is it worth paying to repair an 800mhz G4 iBook (applecare expired April '06)?
I've heard about kernal panic issues with the macbooks so I'm apprehensive about getting one of those right now too. Getting frustrated. Actually considered copping an inexpensive PC laptop... ugghhh.

  • Harddrive failure

A few days ago I woke up to a loud noise. I found out it was coming from my iBook, and more specifically the iBook's harddrive. It was still on, and I could move my mouse, but was unable to do anything else. So, I restarted it. Nothing. It loaded up to the grey window with the loading status, but nothing happened after that. All the while the harddrive was making a loud and obnoxious sound coming from the harddrive. I did a little research and it seems to me that my harddrive has failed. I'm a little upset because I am a young student who kept everything he had on his iBook; his music, programs, art, etc.. and now I've lost everything.
I'm sorry to say but this is not the first time I've had a problem with my iBook. I've had the logic board fry on me twice(both during the school year), and have gotten it fixed both times, with the second being a huge pain and hassle(though I did get a free combo drive in the end, I had to redo my final essay on a different computer). I've already bought myself a new harddrive that I want to start over on, but now I'm getting afraid that it will die on me again. I've been a loyal customer to Apple for a long time now, and i have enjoyed everything I've gotten from them, including this iBook. However I am afraid to even use it now because of its instability. I am going into my senior year here in high school and i know I will definitely be needing a working laptop that I can trust will not break down on me like my iBook has. Any comments or suggestions are greatly appreciated, as I really don't know what to do.
    iBook G3 800mhz 640MB   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

You need to get an external FireWire drive.
-Yeah, that would be great if I could afford something like that.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822154601
You have to decide which you can best afford? A FireWire hard drive or lost data? If your data isn't worth it, then that's the best decision. Otherwise, it's essential to have an external drive.
Of course, DiskWarrior can't always and forever work miracles on a hard drive. It depends on how extensive the damage is. But DiskWarrior has saved my drive more than once when it was making horrible noises and wouldn't boot and I thought it was a goner. Like you, I didn't have a backup, and DiskWarrior saved my hard drive. Two or three times. (I have the external drive now.)
If your iBook was originally purchased more than three years ago, then, officially, it is past the period of coverage provided by the iBook Logic Board Repair Extension Program. Check out the FAQ page and if the symptoms look familiar, give Apple a call.
If you are past the three-year time limit, try calling and asking for Customer Relations (NOT Customer Service--they can't help you) and ask them to please make an exception to the three-year limit in your case.
    Good luck.

  • Backing iBooks files up to MacBook? (Not iTunes)

I've amassed over a hundred .epubs in iBooks to date, but I'm thinking of switching to the Readmill app.
Sadly, the iBooks app doesn't allow exports or backups outside iTunes, and Readmill won't sync from iTunes. (I use the iPad version.) Can I back up my epubs from iBooks to the Mac itself?
Solutions would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Update from OP: Messed around in iTunes for a bit and started remembering how to use it (just updated). Solution was found rather quickly, to my immense embarrassment – "Show in Finder" does wonders. Please ignore this thread as I fly into the sunset.

  • CS3/CS4 Performance; recommendations for LAN/Server Env ?

Id like to hear from the admins (or users for that matter) dealing with a significant amount of Adobe CS3/CS4 users, in a LAN/Server environment.
What are the specs of the machines (PC's) that run it well ?
Are you using font managers ?
Are you the users editing files located on the server ?
Im running all machines well above Adobe spec, Server 03 domain, Gbit Lan, Citrix ASA router.
The guys here are of course whining about Macs, but they also state that font manager software would help resource usage on the workstations. When the apps launch in the AM, performance is great, as the day wears on, machine performance lags, and PS or Illustrator will eat itself. Event viewer has no other details except for App Hang.  Often times, while trying to save the work back out to the server; but other times just during general use.
Just wondering of there is something I could be doing to better to help these guys.
Anyone have thoughts on this ?
    Keith

How about some details on those machines? CS3 and CS4 are very resource hungry and I've found the best environment is Vista 64 with at 8 gigs of RAM (or more) a fast processor and fast harddrives.
FWIW, it's not all that unusual to need to restart some of these applications after a lot of use.
I know it's a pain but it certainly cures a world of ills when things start to slow down.
BTW, that holds true on the Mac side as well.
    Bob
