IBook G4 having "Corrupt Skip List" error

Hello everybody, i'm having some problems with my little 12" iBook G4 800Mhz (128+128mb Ram memory).
I've recently installed a 512mb Crucial PC2700 Ram module, in the original 128mb Apple memory slot.
Since then, i'm getting kernel panics, the "Corrupt Skip List" error:
"cpu-0 code= 00000007 corrupt skip list
backtrace terminated - frame not mapped or invalid
proceeding back via exception chain
waiting for remote debugger connection."
I tried to replace the Crucial memory with the original one, and it works fine.
I've already repaired permissions, run Disk Utility and reset PRAM/NVRAM, as read in some old forum posts.
No problems revealed, and nothing worked so far.
Have you got any advice?
Thank you in advance

When did this happen? I guess I should hang around the Lounge more often. Just can't justify taking the time when I can't even make my rounds in the forums to which I subscribe on a regular basis. In any case, you have done well; I rejoice greatly.

  • Crash - "Corrupt Skip Lists"

    Hi,
    I had a system crash recently, the kind in which everything freezes and you get a failure report on top of the current screen. It read, among others, "Corrupt Skip Lists". (I made a photo of this, so I have other details)
    Somewhere on the net someone suggested that one of my RAMs might be broken, so I tried running the computer with only one at a time, but still it's not running very well. The main problems are crashes in InDesign and Photoshop, but occasionaly a system crash happens as well. Oh, and the Apple Hardware Test doesn't work from the system CD either - I don't even get the option to start it via restart/alt.
    Anybody any ideas of what else might be wrong, or what I might could try?
    Thanks,
    B.

    It probably wouldn't hurt to run Disk Utility, and check out the hard drive. Also, repair permissions from Disk utility is also good to do.
    Having removed RAM, it would be wise to reset the PRAM/NVRAM. This is adviseable anytime hardware is added, or removed. Here is how to:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
    OnyX is fairly good for maintenance routines, but can't really help in isolating trouble. A good, all purpose utility is TechTool. It checks most everything.
    If the crash issue continues, and no other hardware problems can be found, you may want to reinstall the OS.

  • Kernel Panics: Corrupt Skip Lists

    I recently upgraded my eMac's hard drive to a 160 GB hard drive. Before my eMac was very stable. I experienced maybe one or two kernel panics before upgrading. Now, they are a frequent experience. The curious thing is that all report the same error- "Corrupt Skip Lists". Yet, I cannot find any reference to this error anywhere. Also, I was running Panther before upgrading and switched to Tiger after installing the new drive. I suppose this could also be a factor. The odd thing is that these occur even when it's not running (has booted) off the new internal drive sometimes.
    Here are some screen shots I've taken:
    http://gamoe.net/imagebank/Other/eMacError/KernelPanic1.jpg
    http://gamoe.net/imagebank/Other/eMacError/KernelPanic2.jpg
    Any clues on this?

    Interesting. A topic probably only for the more technically minded. Thank you for your response. I hadn't gotten any leads until now, even though I've posted about this elsewhere. Of course I added more RAM, it's the only decent thing to do, given Apple's traditional skimping on built-in/included RAM.
    So I did as you suggested. I dug up the Apple Hardware Test CD, but it came up with nothing. I then downloaded and ran Memtest in the suggested single user mode under root. I had no idea it would take as long as it did, though I should have known, as it is an thorough test. I used the default suggested 3 passes. Results are as follows.
    Test 1 gave me:
    Bit Flip: FAILURE: 0xfffff3ff != 0xfffff7ff at offset 0x02c53b8b.
    Test 3 gave me:
    Stuck Address: FAILURE: possible bad address line at offset 0x00e52b8b.
    Resulting in these conclusions:
    * Address Test Failed * One or more DIMM address lines are non-functional.
    * Memory Test Failed * Please check logfile for details.
    Actually, I really have had no way of knowing if it was the hard drive or not. When I upgraded I also switched to Tiger, so it could be either. I must say that I am more a little surprised at the results, given that I installed this memory almost immediately after I bought the eMac, and it is Crucial RAM, which is known for quality, and it is the same RAM Apple uses for Macs. I've had absolutely no problems like this in the two years plus I've been using my eMac, under different versions of Mac OS X.
    Given these results, can one reasonably conclude that the memory is responsible for the kernel panics? And, provided that the eMac has panicked even when it has not been booted up from the new internal drive, would you completely rule out the internal hard drive as the cause?-- Or can there be more to this?

  • Spotlight gives no results, privacy tab gives me a list error, What The F?

    Just did the most recent Apple updates, (excluding 10.5.2 because I'm using Pro Tools HD which doesn't support it yet) and spotlight just plan stopped working. Finder Search produces no results. Privacy tab doesn't work or allow me to drag drives in without producing a unknown 'list error'.
    I used Cocktail and Mainmenu to delete all my cache files and manually reindex spotlight, repaired permissions, relaunched finder, trashed the spotlight V100 hidden plist and still NO help, nada.
    Then I noticed Time Machine was ON. I don't believe I turned it ON, is it set to ON by default? I turned it off and Spotlight now works fine after reindexing my 6 drives.
    What the frick is up with spotlight on Leopard? I saw so many people having problems I thought I should add to the group and let it be known many many people are hurting with search functions on Leopard.
    So do I need to choose between Time Machine and Spotlight? They dont like eachother!

    Help. I have tried deleting the hidden Spotlight folder per above suggestions, and now it acts as though Spotlight won't even function.
    I have tried to fix THAT problem with the following (http://osxdaily.com/2007/03/22/how-to-completely-disable-spotlight/) and cannot get any of these to work. To be fair, I can't try the Terminal suggestion, as Terminal refuses to allow me to enter my admin password. Weird.
    Anyway, two brand new machines, one a fresh-out-of-the-box install and Spotlight broken on both. Besides a reinstall, any ideas how to reinstate my (hidden) Spotlight folders and fix the 'Privacy List Error' I get every time I try to drag a volume to the Spotlight>Privacy tab.
    Frustrating having a new machine that won't allow a basic Finder search.

  • Spotlight: "Privacy List Error: ... couldn't be added ... unknown error"

    G'day all. I'm having a spotlight problem and I'd be very grateful for any help.
    In short:
    Spotlight refuses to index one of my partitions, and both the Privacy "trick" in System Preferences to force a re-index, plus using mdutil in the terminal, both produce unknown errors.
    If anyone has any ideas, please help!
    More information if you're interested:
    I have my hard drive partitioned into two, one for the OS the other for my home folder. I've used the advanced settings in the System Preferences > Accounts to tell my user account to find my home folder on the second partition.
    Spotlight refuses to work with the home folder volume.
    When I try to go into System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy and add the offending volume to that, I get a message saying "Privacy List Error: The item couldn't be added or removed because of an unknown error."
    If in Terminal I try the following:
    mdutil -sv /Volumes/David/
    I get back:
    /volumes/David:
    Indexing disabled.
    I try:
    mdutil -v -i on /Volumes/David/
    I get back:
    /volumes/David:
    Error: unable to perform operation. (-1)
    Indexing disabled.
    I've tried the above statements both logged in as root as well as logged in as me.
    I've also tried Spotless and get an equally unhelpful "unknown error".
    Usually when updating my system I just do an upgrade install, and admittedly this has left a lot of legacy stuff lying around over the years, and various problems have been building recently, including this one, so a few weeks ago I bit the bullet and gave my system a full clean out:
    I swapped my existing hard drive for a new one, formatted the new one, set up the partitions afresh, did a clean install (from the 10.5.4 discs that came with my MacBook Pro), then software updated everything (up to 10.5.6), and then clean reinstalled most of my applications, and manually dragged all my personal stuff back in from the original hard drive (which now is sitting in an external case as a backup in case I realise I've forgotten to transfer something, down the track).
    All my other problems have gone away and my system is snappier than it's been in a long time, which is great (and not unexpected!), but this spotlight problem persists. I'm usually pretty clued up with Mac stuff and am generally comfortable in the Terminal but this one's got me stumped. If anyone can help me figure out what is causing this error, I'd be most grateful.
    Thanks!

    Thanks V.K. for the suggestions. I've just tried all that, but unfortunately it has not changed the situation.
    System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy, and mdutil both still give the same results as before.
    A bunch more info in case it's relevant/helpful:
    1. The volume in question IS my home folder. ie. the path to my home folder as defined in the Advanced Settings part of System Preferences > Accounts is "/Volumes/David/" (and yes the volume name is "David" with a capital "D"). I mention all that so I can ask is there any problem with having my home folder = a volume? I can't see any reason why this shouldn't work, and for what it's worth this spotlight problem is only recent whereas I've been using this set up ever since I got Leopard on the day it originally came out (and spotlight had been working fine for months until recently).
    2. I wonder if there's something else on that volume that's causing problems, or some permissions issue? If it might be any use in diagnosing this issue, here's some ls's:

    3. here's an interesting entry from the console at the point where I tried to add the volume to System Preference > Spotlight > Privacy:
    mds[32] nosymlink_mkdir() unable to realpath or parent paths do not match p:/Volumes/David/.Spotlight-V100: r:/volumes/David:
    4. I notice that when I do that (add the volume) it gives the error message I originally explained ("couldn't be added or removed because of an unknown error"), and adds the above line to the console, but otherwise it appears that nothing has changed (ie. it doesn't show in the list).
    If I then quit system preferences, reopen it, and go back into that Privacy tab the volume IS there in the list. If I then try to remove it, I get the same error message and console message, and again nothing appears to happen, but then if I quit system preferences again and then go back into it, the volume is no longer in the list.
    There is definitely something weird going on here.
    Any other thoughts?
    Thanks again!
    David.

  • Bios is corrupt or missing (error 501)

    I downloaded the newest version of the bios.  Under system info, it identifies this newest bios as the bios.  But the computer shuts down every 30 minutes or so.  The computer shuts down.  Then it restarts, on its own, and a message comes up, saying "The bios is corrupt or missing (error code 501)." I tried recovering the bios using a press key combination, but it doesn't work.  I don't think the computer supports this function.   I do have a HP_Tools volume.  It has a folder "Hewlett Packard/Bios/Current" with files "68SAD" and "68SAD.sig".  The "Previous" folder has the same files.  The "New" folder is empty. I've always updated the Bios from the system drive, rather than from an external Flash drive.  I don't know if this matters or not.   I retried updating the Bios several times, thinking I did something wrong.  The computer still keeps shutting down, on its own, while doing things.  Then it restarts on its own with the "bios is corrupt or missing" message.  I can't turn off the computer without it restarting on its own and coming up with that message.   I'm desperate.

    Hi @HP-salum
    Thank You for your inquiry, I will do my best to assist you.
    It is my understanding that when you turn on your notebook you are receiving the Bios application 501 is missing or corrupt.
    You will need to restore your bios.  Here is a link to assist you with that process. Restoring the BIOS
    If you are unable to  restore the bios using the Windows key plus B method, if you can access the bios by pressing F10 approximately once ever second after pressing the power button to start the notebook to enter the system configuration screen you can try restoring the defaults.  There will be an option along the bottom of the screen.
    If you are unable to install  the HP_Tools on a USB key as instructed in the previous document you can go to the download page for your notebook and look for a bios update which you can download and install on the USB key to  recovery your notebook.
    Here is a link to Drivers & Downloads where you will need to input your exact model to display a list of software and drivers for your notebook.  This is where you can look for a bios update for yours.
    Good Luck!
    Sparkles1

  • Spotlight, Privacy List Errors, and Ineffective sudo commands

    Good Evening Apple Spport Community,
    I've been having an issue with Spotlight recently. Basically, it was/is not indexing correctly/at all.
    My current situation: Spotlight does not display search results for anything but definitions. No Applications. No Folders. No Files. Nothing.  I've attempted several things to remedy this issue.
    For instance, I've tried adding and removing my HD from the Spotlight preferences under System Preferences. I receive the Privacy List Error: The item couldn't be added or removed because you don't have the appropriate permissions.
    So I read more around the interweb/community and find several suggested sudo commands that may help. I've tried:
    sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist
    sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist
    sudo mdutil -a -i off
    sudo mdutil -a -i on
    These do not seem to work.
    A possibly unrelated issues is that my TimeMachine (using an external drive) has spot backing up. It'll just sit there with the "preparing backup" message and never go anywhere beyond that.
    I've tried my luck trying to interpret a lot of the more technical vernacular on my own, but to no avail of my issue. Thus, I am trying a more direct approach. Any assistance you could provide in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers.

    Well - I guess I just needed to keep searching - Solution #1 worked for me.

    =========================================================================Do we have to make any changes on other config files except the imta.cnf and mappings file for inbound and outbound..
    thanks for any help
    Edited by: prasad0_0 on Jul 8, 2008 4:58 AM

    i have already setup the messaging server 6 months back.. followed the same procedure to route mails to a gateway..
    made changes to the imta.cnf for outbound mail flow to the tcp_local and mappings file to accept inbound mail flow from the gateway. Its working perfectly on the older setup, but this now, have issues with new setup.
    here is the imta.cnf file..

  • Array of references to references to objects? Skip lists...

    I'm trying to hammer out a SkipList ADT by tomorrow night. The structure of my SkipList is basically: A Skip list has a reference to the first SkipListNode. Each SkipListNode has an array of links, where a link of level 1 links to the next node that is at least level 1 (every node is at least level 1), and array of 2 links to the next node down the list that is at least that tall, etc. For the last tallest node in the list, it will have links that are null, as there are no nodes after it which can reach up to its higher level links.
    My problem is that as I traverse the list looking for the insert position, I need to keep track of the taller links which may be 'cut-off' by the newly inserted node. Just as with a normal LinkedList, I would want to make the new node point to where these old links pointed, and point the old links to the new node. What I have been trying to do is build an array:
    SkipListNode previousLinks[] = new SkipListNode[levelOfTallestNodeInSkipList];
    As I traverse a SkipListNode, I over-write the previousLinks[i] with every level i link I encounter. For example say I'm in a level 5 node (currentNode) with key 15. I'm trying to inser key 17. I try the level 5 node's level 5 link and its null, so I would want to make previousLinks[5] = currentNode[5]. I then try currentNode's level 4 link, it's not null but it points to a node with key 47, which is past the insertion point for a node with key 17. So again, I want previousLinks[4] to REFER TO currentNode[4]. Etc, etc... I get down to currentNode's level 1 link and see it links to a node with key 16 and level 1. Ok, this is less than 17 so I make currentNode = key 16 node (which is lvl 1). Then I traverse currentNode's only link- a level 1 link- and see that it links to a node with key 18. BOOM: here's the insert point. I randomly select level 4 for the new node which will hold 17. This means that I will 'cut-off' the level four link of the node holding key 15. What I want to be able to do is:
    /*connect new links to where old links point to*/
    for (int k = 0; k < newNode.level; k++) {
    if (k < current.level)
    newNode.links[k] = previousLinks[k];
    else
    newNode.links[k] = null;
    /*connect old links to newly created node*/
    for (int k = 0;
    k < Math.min(current.level, newNode.level); k++)
    previousLinks[k] = newNode;
    But this doesn't work. The previousLinks array seems to only hold the values which were copied from the earlier nodes, not references to the fields in the nodes which point further down the list. What I want is a C++ style array of pointers to fields in an object's array so that I can change where these fields point (refer).
    I hope this post makes enough sense for someone to at least give me a clue... thanks.

    My skiplist implementation has a method to lookup a node. The resultant array of nodes has length the maximum height of the skiplist. At each level the array containes a reference to the node prior to the one I am looking for at that level. This allows me to patch all the relevant nodes when I add/remove an item to/from the skiplist.
    My code might help give you the idea.
         * Looks up the payload in the list returning an array
         * of nodes that point to the element immediately before
         * the desired element.
         * @param target the node we are searching for
         * @return and array of Nodes that are just prior to the
         * node we are looking for.
        private Node[] lookup(Node target)
            Node[] update = new Node[MAX_HEIGHT+1];
            int k = m_height;
            Node p = m_header;
            do
                Node q = null;
                while (((q = p.getNext(k) )!= null) && (m_comparator.lessThan(q, target))) p = q;
                update[k] = p;
            }  while (--k >= 0);
            return update;
        }

    Cannot import CDs into iTunes, keep getting disc is corrupted and unreadable error. Advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

    Thanks for the reply!
    I downloaded the program and ran it, got to the point where it says I have errors that need to be fixed... but it appears I have to pay for the rest of the program to actually repair these errors. Is this incorrect?
    If I do have to pay, then I'd like to look for an alternative... the program is $40; of course, that's cheaper than buying a new iPod, but I want to avoid that too.

  • White list error message

    Hi Experts!
    We have an issue when displaying originals(in DIRs) in PLM WUI, Portal.
    The issue can be summarized like this:
    JPG-Images or PDF files are stored on a shared folder. (Not in SAP System)
    We then create an original in a DIR(document info record). We do NOT check in the original but only use file as a link.
    (In our solution we will not check in the originals but the versioning will be controlled in the linked folder).
    Example:
    We create an original with the following link
    sharedfolder\images\image01.jpg
    Anyone can afterwards log on the system and click display original and the jpf or pdf is shown.
    This procedure works perfectly fine when we are in SAPGUI.
    But in the Portal the system acts different from case to case.
    Case 1
    When a colleague of mine has added an original in SAPGUI and I
    then press display in Portal I get a security list error message, Wrong downloading server
    (We have defined the white list, TCode wdr_acf_wlist, and downloaded it.
    In this case we have tried
    sharedfolder\images\ as downloading server for example)
    Case 2
    When I have added an original in SAPGUI and then press display in the Portal the image is shown
    ->Why do I NOT get the error message in this case?
    Any ideas why the system works this way and how I can solve it?
    Thanks in advance!
    Mikael

    Hi Mikael,
    I was led to this thread via search on SDN for "white list". We need to set up an external facing portal and need to set up reverse proxy plus white list. We have an OSS message running with prio very high but don't seem to get a helpful answer. Can you give info on how to configure the revese proxy (we aim at citrix gateway as reverse proxy) with white list? or can you describe your architecture with focus on white list? very kind regards, Matthias Kasig

    HI experts!
    I have an interesting problem.
    I execute F.01 and in tab "Especial Evaluations" select  "Alternative Account Number" and before the balance is displayed I get a Error List always with the same error:
    I now about this error and I wonder if there was any way of ignore it.
    I have been looking for it in forums and most answers indicate that the message should be customized the message in OBA5 but i have tried changing it but it doesn´t work , always error message....
    Can you plesase help me, I need not consider that error or the whole list.
    Best Regards

    Hi Nabehet and Sanjeev,
    The situation is that we want to see the balance sheet for a Serbian company that use the same chart of accounts than the rest of the companys in the group. I mean?
    For Serbian company, they see their balance sheet by alternative account number (that has the serbian account)
    Ok, the problem is that for some requirements we have created accounts for Serbian company that   don´t have alternative account because these accounts are transparent for them.
    These accounts are the accounts showing the error and I would like users don´t see it.
    The list error is it:
    Then, when I go back the balance appears perfectly.
    I don,t Know If I have explained clearly.
    Appreciete any help.
