IBook G4 HD sudden DYing after 18 month.. Apple Times It????

My iBook G4 1 Mhz 12 inch worked perfectly for about 17 month....
All of a sudden i few days ago i started to hear some slight noeses in HD
and today it startet to sound like a Motobike engine!!
After restart same Motobike engine HD noise and no go beyond Apple Logo...
my good friend bought the same iBook at the same time and his HD died two weeks before Warranty end , so Apple replaced it.
What am i to do to safe my Harddisk or Data?
Is Apple times this that we all go and by new product each 2 years ...?
any tips ideas - much, much appreciated
milka

Hi Milka,
...but i got iMac G4 running Tiger, is there a way i could back up my failed iBook HD in FW target mode?
1. With both Macs switched off, connect them together with a firewire cable.
2. Switch on the iMac and hold the "T" key until it goes into FWTDM
3. Switch on the iBook and hold down the Option(alt) key. Within the Startup Manager screen select the iMac hd and click on the arrow.
Dependant on the damage you may not see the iBook's hd on the desktop and it may take several restarts using the above procedure. It's your only way though, given what you currently have, in retrieving the data from your iBook's hd. No guarantees and I genuinely do wish you success in retrieving your data.
There are companies out there who specialise in data retrieval. They charge a lot of money though and give no guarantees of success. I suppose it depends on what value you place on your data as to whether you go down this route or not.
On a wider issue, hard drives do fail regardless of whether they are installed in a Mac or a PC. This is an innescapable fact. Some last months others years but at some point they will fail. This is why it is so important to backup on a regular basis.
I backup religiously on a daily basis... sometimes twice daily. A couple of months ago the internal hd in my PowerBook decided to go "belly up". No problem... I just connected the external firewire hd where I keep an up to date clone of the internal hd and continued working almost virtually from where I left off. When time allowed, I bought an 80 GB hd, installed it in my PowerBook and re-cloned everything from the external hd back to the new internal hd.
Backup, Backup, Backup, Backup, Backup, Backup, Backup, Backup!!!

You can view SMART status using the Get Info menu item in Disk Utility but sometimes it doesn't work for external drives (I don't know if a drive in another computer is considered external in this regard).
When you erased the drive did you try writing zeros once in security options?  This kind of stress tests the drive and will force it to have a look at all sectors rather than just saying it removed all reference to the files so the drive is fit and ready for use.

  • Ibook 1.2Ghz suddenly died - help please.

The machine is 18 months old, has a new battery and i've never had any problems with it. While using it this morning the machine just died. It restarted again with no ill effects, bar the clock resetting. However, thirty minutes later the same thing happened. This time, grey vertical lines preceded the shutdown.
Now, approximately one in three times the machine will start up normally - only to shut down after one or two minutes. All files and folders appear present and correct during this time. The rest of the time, the fans spin up to full speed and nothing else happens.
Any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi Padraig,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Was the menu bar blinking? Have you deleted anything recently, maybe a font/language? You may want to try starting up in Safe Mode (Knowledge Base Document #107393 on How to Startup In Safe Mode). Do you have another user account? If so try logging into that one and see if you run into the same problem. Do you have the original install disc that came with your computer? Have you tried booting from it? You may want to look at..

Knowledge Base Document #301170 about The utilities available on the Mac OS X 10.4 Install DVD
Checking the S.M.A.R.T. status of your hard disk (Disk Utility 10.5)
With Disk Utility you can also verify and repair the disk. Do you have an external monitor that you could hook you iBook up to? You may also want to look at Knowledge Base Document #300552 on My computer won't turn on (Display troubleshooting.

  • Hard Drive Died After 18 Months

I noticed that there is an archive message that sound like exactly like what I'm going through, the only difference is that my Mac Mini is usually always running. I came home last night to find my Mac froze. I had to force reboot, and the OS would not load, I then inserted my Tech Tool Pro DVD and had it test hardware, and it said that my internal 80GB drive had errors. I rebooted again this time inserting my Tiger
DVD and tried to used Apple's Disk Utility without any luck, the app could see the drive but whenever I tried to repair/restore or format it would freeze up. My Mac Mini is about 18 months old (pre Intel) and now I'm looking at having to replace the hard drive.
Does anyone know if Apple is acknowledging that the 80GB hard drives in the pre-Intel Mac Mini's fail after less then 2 years? If so has anyone gotten Apple to replace them beyond the 1 year warranty? (Attn Apple Support Personel - If you read this perhasp you reply anonymously without putting words in Apple's month)
Not sure what it will cost to replace it, but if it is too much I guess it would be cheaper to buy a new computer... (hate to say it maybe a Dell $$$ and it would really suck because I've already pre-ordered Leopard) I hate the idea that I may have to pay a bunch of money to replace the drive, the one good thing is hopefully I have a good backup assuming that the crash didn't happen in the middle of the backup, but it probably did since it should have been backing up my system about the time it took a dive.

In addition to the suggestions and comments already made, it's worth noting that despite the large number of minis sold with those 80Gb drives, there has not been all that much in the way of reports here of the drives failing. I would be surprised therefore if yours was anything more than an individual component failure rather than one that is indicative of a wider problem. Not that I mean to trivialize the failure of your system, just that it would not appear to be part of a trend which Apple might be expected to have to deal with. I would also not expect any Apple personnel to read this and reply - and certainly not in any way that doesn't reflect the company's policies and acknowledged practices.
Given that a replacement drive would be significantly less in cost than a replacement computer (whether Apple or Dell), I think your wisest choice is the repair - particularly since that will allow you to take advantage of Leopard once you have your pre-ordered copy. If you have on-going concerns about the reliability of the mini you would at least then have a working one which would be easy to sell to help offset the cost of a replacement system - the non-working unit at present has far less value.

  • My 6th gen Nano died after 6 months of light use...

it was a replacement for 1st gen Nano.  The battery went dead and now the Nano just heats up when being charged.  It must have been defective but it only came with a 3 month warranty!!  How can I get help from Apple without the threat of the per-incident service charge?  Ugh!

I assume you mean a replacement for the 1G Nano recall as there hasn't been such a recall for the 2G Nano. The replacement iPod Nano only had a 90 warranty on it that covered manufacturing defects. So it looks like you fall ouside of the window.  You can still try and schedule an appointment at your local Apple Store/Genius Bar to see if they'll make an exception, but they are by no means obligated to do so.
If they don't, you'll need to pay for an out of warranty exchange.

  • IMac 20" died after one month

The iMac wouldn't get past the grey screen at startup. Called Applecare and got no help. They sent me to a genius bar, but told me the wrong date and time.
Beware of Applecare. They are on the other side of the world and have no idea what the day and time is where you are. "Today" is probably your tomorrow.
Got to wait days now to get back in line at a genius bar.

    Korn,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Normally they aren't as problematic. The gray screen at startup normally happens if the disk is too full, or the directory is damaged. Is your data backed up so we can test for the latter?
Not everyone has a time zone clock on their wall. I would at least mention to AppleCare the next time you call that they need to pay closer attention to their clock widget. And certainly when you call, tell them what part of the world you are calling from.

  • MBP - beyond freezing - just dead after 3 months

Just wanted to let everyone know that my 2010 MBP died after 3 months.
Was programming Friday nght as usual and then Saturday afternoon the power button did nothing and the mag connector led was very dim.
The Apple store states that it is the logic board and will be 3 days to replace.
Is this the norm? Is it just the new model? The i7?
I made the switch entirely from PC to Mac and now have programming data that I need for client meetings in Mac format and cannot access. Very frustrating.
I have had Dell and HP laptops that ran without issue until retirement
and then are still running as hand me downs (about 5 years old).
I like the OS X interface and enjoy programming on the platform but as a consultant I need something reliable.
Has anyone else had a similar experience?
May be related to the graphics switching. I use the gfxStatus program and usually keep the nvidia on at all times. Recently got a Dell 3008wfp and decided to re-enbale automatic switching and the system died about a week later with NO indication of any problems - good shutdown and then would never power up again...

I think that what you have discovered is the reason why there is such a thing as a warranty. Hardware fails

It sounds like there are a couple things going on here.  First check if you have a successful install of SQL Server, then we'll figure out the connection issues.
Can you launch SQL Server Configuration Manager and check for SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) if default instance or SQL Server (other name) if you've configured your instance as a named instance.  Once you find this, make sure the service is started.
If not started, try to start it and see if it throws an error.  If you get an error, post the error message your hitting.  If the service starts, you can then launch SSMS and try to connect.  If you have a default instance, you can use the machine
name in the connection dialog.  Ex:  "COWBOYS" where Cowboys is the machine name.  However, if you named the SQL Server instance during install, you'll need to connect using the machine\instance format.  Ex:  COWBOYS\Romo (where Romo
is the instance name you set during install).
You can also look at the summary.txt file in the SQL Server setup error logs to see what happened on the most recent install.  Past install history is archived in the log folder if you need to dig those up to help troubleshoot, but the most
recent one may help get to the bottom of it if there is an issue with setup detecting a prior instance that needs to be repaired.

  • IBook Rises From Dead After 3 Months!  Baffled Family Member Needs Answers

    Hi
This is a rather long-winded post, so apologies/thanks to those of you patient enough to read to the end and to anyone who can shed some light on something that is baffling me regarding my iBook G3 700MHz (mid-2002 - I think).
This iBook has been an absolute trojan, working virtually 24/7 since I got it.
Anyway, one day about 3 months ago it just wouldn't power up. Nothing. No sound, no movement or any other sign of life.
I called my local Apple dealer and they told me about the PMU reset (mentioned elsewhere in these posts), which I did, and lo and behold the old beast fired up again. There was much rejoicing. All I had to do was reset the date and everything was sweet.
A day or so later I turned it off to take it to work with me, as usual. When I got to work and tried to start up nothing happened. Dead.
I tried the PMU reset again, to no avail. Nothing would get it going again.
I took it in to the dealer for them to have a look at. When I phoned back in the evening they said the logic board was dead and would need to be replaced at a cost of AU$1,000 (about US$800)! When I asked whether there wasn't an internal battery that could be replaced, I was told the iBooks don't have them - a fact which seems to have been confirmed in other posts in this forum.
I decided to buy a new iBook.
I've been waiting now for over 2 months for my new BTO iBook, but the dealer has lent me another iBook to tide me over until it arrives. The ridiculous wait for my new iBook is something I can cover in another rant, so I'll cut to the chase now...
Today, I was tidying up and decided that i should put my dead iBook away in its box and maybe one day I'd buy a second-hand logic board on eBay or something, fix it up and use it as an iTunes player or something...
Anyway, just before I put the dead iBook into its coffin, I thought I'd just give the power button one last push, for old times' sake.
    The beast started up!
Again, there was much rejoicing. Again, all I had to do was reset the date/time.
So, as I type this on my loan iBook, I'm listening to iTunes via my SoundSticks on the old machine.
    My question is this...
What has really happened to my iBook?
If the logic board is dead, why did the machine start up again after 3 months lying dormant?
If there is no internal battery, why have I had to reset the date/time both times it restarted? Wouldn't it be logical to think that some kind of battery was storing these settings?
Doesn't it seem reasonable to think that there is some sort of battery inside the machine which has slowly built up enough charge over the last 90 days to allow the computer to boot again?
Is it that there is in fact an internal battery built in to the logic board, and when the dealer told me it was "fried", all they really meant was that the battery was dead, but because it was on the logic board that the whole thing had to be replaced?
Obviously, I'm not going to turn the old iBook off again. I'll just put it to sleep when I'm not listening to music through it, but I'm just wondering whether any of you really smart people can tell me what's going on.
I really feel that this is miraculous and need some kind of clear answers to these questions.
Thanks for any help you can give me.
    Matt
    iBook G3 dual USB 700MHz   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Hi, Matthew. Welcome to Apple Discussions.
It is not uncommon for an iBook with a bad logic board to work intermittently.
There is no internal battery in an iBook. A capacitor holds the date/time information long enough for you to switch batteries, or for a short time without battery or AC power. The only battery is the main battery. If it has been left without use for some months, the capacitor has simply lost the date and time due to disuse and lack of power during that time.
When you do a PMU reset, this makes the time and date default, also.
Your iBook has been acting as one would expect, given the circumstances.
    Mystery solved.
