IBook G4 Install Disc

Hi, I had the unfortunate circumstance of having my iBook G4's hard drive fail, unexpectedly. I replaced it easy enough. But I seem to have lost the Mac OS X install disc to reload. Can anyone tell me where in the world I can get another? I don't want to buy another license of tiger with the new release of leopard coming soon. But, I can't wait until the release, either. I just need the install disc. Any suggestions? Thanks.

$20? In the recent past, the price for a set of install disks to replace lost disks has been $60. The charge might have been $20 if your original disks were defective. But if you lost them (by no fault of Apple), then to replace them is usually about $60.
To jaredvanscoder, I would really, really recommend getting the correct set of install disks for your iBook. A retail copy of Mac OS X is $129 and it doesn't include iLife or AppleWorks or any of the other bundled software.

  • Can't boot iBook with install disc

    Hi All,
I've inherited an old clamshell iBook that freezes every time I try to boot from the install disc.
The iBook came with 0S9.2 installed and everything seemed to be working OK. I then tried to upgrade it using a retail Jaguar disc and it froze on booting up. Now it won't even load OS9 but instead gives me a blinking folder with a question mark.
When I try to install from the Jaguar boot disc, I get the Apple logo and then it freezes right there. I tried zapping the P-Ram a few times and that didn't fix it. I tried holding Option key when loading and got to the screen where it lists boot options. I chose OS X and it after the logo comes up, it freezes.
Have also tried re-seating and completely removing the RAM. No difference.
When I go into verbose mode I get some kind of kernel panic error freeze and the keyboard won't let me input anything.
I reached the open firmware screen and it says Powerbook2,1 4.1.7f4 so I think that means my firmware is fine for OS X.
I unfortunately don't have access to an OS 9.2 disc so can't boot into that from disc. I think my 9.2 system folder needs to be re-blessed or something like that but have no way to reach it.
    Any suggestions?

Ok, well, I believe that in order to re-bless the OS 9 system folder, you need the OS 9 CD. (I'm not an OS 9 expert, but that's what I've seen online).
However, if you install 10.2 (or 10.3) on the computer, it should boot right into it and you don't even "need" OS 9 any more.
I'm starting to think you have a hardware problem of some kind, and the first place to check is the RAM. OS X is more finicky than OS 9 was with RAM, so do you have another memory module you could install to check? Or perhaps another clamshell (like was suggested) to try your RAM in?
Do you have an Apple Hardware test disk? My next suggestion would be to get one and to run the test and see what (if any) hardware is having problems.
And one more thought: if you can boot using the 10.3 disk, try running Disk Utility and repairing your disk a couple of times. Maybe there's a problem in your hard drive.

Oh! No sorry. I meant the same boat as looking for a
home for a displaced MacBook Pro comboDrive. I got
the optiBay second HDD and now the combodrive needs a
    home.
    Sorry
I see that you had installed the Optibay drive for you 15" Macbook Pro. I am interested in getting one for mine. I hope you don't mind answering some questions that I have. How do you like it so far? Did you do the installation yourself? If you did, how difficult was it? Did it come with all the tools you need to open the Macbook Pro and install? How much of an impact does it have on the battery life, noise, and heat? Did you get the external superdrive that they offer, and if so, does it work as well or better than the existing drive? Sorry if this is overwhelming, but I really appreciate it if you can answer them. Thank you.

  • Ibook g3 install disc won't go past "processing Essential Software"

I've got an ibook g3 that I recently put a used windows hard drive into. I boot up the install cd, and it won't get past "processing Essential Software"...
and if I don't use the cd, i get the gray screen with a folder and an old finder icon/question mark.
btw: I have reformatted it, and partitioned it, too. reset the pram, nvram. stuff like that.
    Thanks,
    Jacob.

    Hi, Ronda,
Thank you for replying to this.
    here is the info:
    -hard drive specs-
    brand: IBM
    model: -not sure-
    capacity: 12.07 GB
    basic info:
This HD came out of a previous "Windows XP" Computer.
    -partitioning information-
I have managed to partition it with a restore disk
I partitioned it to "Mac OS Extended" to two (2) partitions
    -restore disc info-
The restore disc was NOT the original -- The iBook was bought used. It may of been a copy of the original owner's disc, and they may not of wanted to get rid of that, also.

  • Obtaining a replacement 10.3 or 10.4 install disc for our iBook

Hi, my wife has an old iBook G3 and the hard drive recently died. I'm replacing it but we do not have the original discs that came with the computer. Does anyone know if it is possible to obtain a replacement OS install disc?
    Many Thanks!

Hi, Josh. Welcome to Apple Discussions.
To get a copy of the original system CDs, call Apple at 1-800-275-2273.
This will not include Mac OS X 10.3 nor Mac OS X 10.4, but an older version of Mac OS X. Which version of Mac OS X was on the original system CDs depends on which model iBook it is, but no iBook G3 came with these later versions of the OS.

  • Will install discs for an iBook (mid 2005) work on an older model (late 2004) ?

I have a nephew that got an old 1.2 GHz 30 GB iBook from a neighbor. It had OS X 10.4 on it, but was not running. I used some old discs from an eMac to fix the OS, but couldn't get any additional software to install. I want to get the newest install discs for this iBook (OSX 10.4.2 and iLife '06). I don't know if the discs will allow the install of the application software bundle to the older iBook. Does anyone know if it will work?

The eMac disk does not have all the necessary software for an iBook. If you reinstall the Mac OSX 10.4.x from a retail disk then your problem should be solved.

  • IBook G3 will not start-up from 10.4.6 Install disc

I have a 700 MHZ iBook G3 with 640 MB RAM and it runs without problems on 10.3.9
I would like to upgrade the system software to Tiger, but any attempt to start-up from the 10.4.6 install discs that came with my Intel MacBook result in the grey screen with the power icon that reads in multiple languages "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button."
Additionally, that message is partially obscured by 24 other lines of code, starting with "panic(cpu 0 caller 0x002E0BF4): Unable to find driver for this platform: "Powerbook4, 3"." and ending with "panic: We are hanging here. . ."
Am I doing something wrong? Are there other methods of achieving this?
If the 10.4.6 install discs that came with my MacBook are unusable to update the iBook OS, what are the other options to upgrade it to a version of Tiger?
    thank you!

On ebay, there seem to be mainly single DVD full-install 10.4 versions which indicate "Includes Xcode 2" on the DVD.
there was only one 4-disc set I found and it states:
"By default, Apple only sold Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger on DVD. When Tiger first launched, Apple offered the opportunity to trade the DVD in the retail box for a CD set using a media exchange program. Most Mac OS X Tiger installer discs sold on eBay are model-specific, that is, they shipped in the box with a specific Mac. This is the full retail set that could only be obtained through the Apple media exchange program that no longer exists. It is difficult if not impossible to get this CD set from Apple today."
Is this the specific version I need to properly install Tiger on my G3 iBook or will one of the single DVD full-installs be sufficient? (this box set is alot more expensive than the single DVDs)
    thanks again for the help!

  • Booting from Install disc Stalls at strange Mouse & Batteries Screen

Any thoughts/suggestions/answers would be greatly appreciated...
I have my hands on a friends iBook G4 purchased in April 2006. They were having problems with it and decided to wipe the drive and re-install the OS etc.
They got it wiped but could not get thru the installation process due to errors. They assumed it was a scratched install disc, and gave it to me to fix.
Upon receipt, I put in my Tiger (retail, not computer specific version) disc and booted via holding down the 'C' key. Got thru the first grey screen, then thru the grey screen with the grey Apple logo on it, and then up pops a screen I've never seen before; and the process stalls here.
This screen looks like two outline images of the Mighty Mouse from its underbelly. Image one is showing you where to install the batteries, and image two is showing you where to turn it on. And on image two, where the laser is, it's flashing red.
    Here's a picture of it @ http://adairnet.com/ss-mac-install-stall-screen.jpg
I couldn't get past this screen so I booted it in Firewire Target Disk Mode into my other computer and used Disk Utility to fully wipe the drive (thinking there may have been some odd file on it causing this issue). That didn't help; when I booted from the Tiger disc again, I stalled at the same spot.
Then I discovered a way past it - it was only by plugging in an old single-button USB clear Apple mouse into the USB port, that caused that screen to go away and proceed to the Tiger installation screen.
I tried this several times, and consistenly, the screen would always come up if no mouse was plugged in, but as soon as I plugged the mouse in, immediately it went away and continued on as normal.
I was able to complete the installation process and everything seems to be working as it should now. I'm just dying to know what this screen was for and why it came up.
Other things to note - even after I have a successful/working OS on the iBook, if I try to boot from any disc containing an OS, I get this same screen/situation.
I did discover the reason the initial install failed was due to bad RAM, which I've replaced and checked and is working fine now.
I've also checked the system with TechTool Protege and found no errors.
Also note that the iBook owner never uses any external or wireless mouse - just the trackpad, and has never experienced any issues with it.
And lastly, to let you know, I did reset/zap the PRAM, did the Open-Firmware resettings, and reset the battery/power-management too without any affect.
Could it be a faulty (or soon to go out) trackpad, disc drive, or USB port? Or something else? Any thoughts?
After searching over 30 pages of search results here, I found a few more posts with similar issues, but as of today (1/2/07), none were resolved...

    TIA!

i actually had this same issue and called and talked to tech support about it, they transferred me to a product specialist and told me the reason it would do this is the install disk is most likely not the original one that came with the computer
he said that if the install disk is different, it may not recognize the specific trackpad the unit is running since it could be a different build, and will than assume that the computer is using an external mouse. If it than doesnt register the external mouse, it will assume that the mouse just doesnt have any battery power.
it makes sense to me, i also was able to bypass the "error" by using an external USB mouse, and i know my install disks were just the family pack that came from the apple store, so i can only assume thats what could be going on.

  • Looking for 10.3 install disc

My daughter has an iBook G3 that is running 10.2 at the moment. I used to have an install disc for 10.3 but I lost it at some stage and there are some big draw backs for her trying to use the latest versions of Safari and iTunes that she can on 10.2. Of course Apple don't sell old versions of their operating systems. Does anyone have a copy of it they don't need anymore?

    mickr7an:
To install Tiger your computer will need to meet the minimum system requirements for Tiger. You will, also need to purchase the Full Retail version of Tiger.
Please note that Computer specific or upgrade versions should be avoided since they are optimized for the computer to which they are specific and will therefore, very likely, cause problems during or after installation. On the legal side, it may be a violation of the Software License Agreement which statesThis License allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple Software on a single computer at a time. This License does not allow the Apple Software to exist on more than one computer at a time...
Tiger can be purchased at The Apple Store. You can also find the Full Retail Version, if you shop carefully, at online outlets like FastMac, HardcoreMac, AllMac, etc. If you know what you are looking for, read all documentation carefully and ask questions of the seller, you may be able to get Tiger on eBay.
If your computer meets the minimum system requirements for Tiger but does not have a DVD drive here are your options:
If you already own Tiger on DVD
•Use an external Firewire DVD Drive.
    •Use Firewire Target Disk Mode
I am not sure why you are not able to boot from an external DVD drive, except:
    1. You have computer specific install disk that is not specific to the computer to which you are installing.
    2. Your DVD drive has a USB and not firewire interface.
Please do post back with further questions or comments.
    Cheers

  • Using G3 install disc on a G4

I bought my iBook used and still have the previous owner's passwords installed on it.
this makes life a little difficult so I would like to re-install using the install disc that came with my old G3 iBook.
will this work or do I have to find a G4 install disc?
additionaly, since this particular model only has a CD-ROM reader and no DVD reader, will this present a problem?
    thanx in advance.

If the iBook is an "education" configuration it has only a CD-ROM drive. Your best bet is my previous suggestion. If the original owner can't provide the install discs, Apple can. They'll sell you a set of Restore Discs at a lesser price than Tiger ($129 + 9$9.95 for the CD set).

  • Where can I find iBook G4 installation discs

    Hello to all,
I am not that good with computers, mainly because I have always had Mac computers, and never had any sort of problem. So know that I have one, I don't know how to deal with it.
I have an old iBook G4. The other day, it was completely bloked, so I decided to re-install the OS with the install discs I got when I bought it. The problem is that the CDs dont work. So does anybody know where I can get some new CD's working without them costing too much, of the Mac OS 10.3.5?
Thanks in advance for your answers

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Call Apple Customer Service 1-800-767-2775 for original disks. You will need to have the serial number of the computer when you call. They will send you the original disks with which the computer shipped. There is a service fee of $60, I think.
    Good luck.

You can usually call AppleCare Support. In the past, they've charged about $60 for a replacement set.

  • Upgrade from another computer's install disc?

Sorry if this has been asked before. I'll be more than happy with a link to another thread.
I have a brand new iBook G4 with iLife '06. I also have a iMac G5 from last year with iMovie HD ('05?). Is it poss to transfer '06 from the iBook to the iMac? If so, just by using the install disc? And I suppose I have to ask - is it a good idea? I just fancy using the new themes, etc.
    Thanks.
    20 inch iMac (Rev B)   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   I GB RAM

Well there's nothing stopping me buying an upgrade disc and using it on the two machines. I just wondered if I could do the same with the discs that actually came with the machine. I mean, it's not like I'm ripping the disc. I had to buy the new machine. And ironically the newer software is on the less-modern, albeit newer, machine.
But this is all irrelevant as you're no doubt correct.
    Thanks for your reply.
